Good to see that DJI took care of you Billy.
Gotta give DJI's marketing department credit here.
    They are on their game.
    One question.
Do you have hawks or any other large predatory birds in your airspace?
Did the flight logs detail why the esc failed or registered an error in the app? (woops that's two questions).
If the motors were stopped abruptly, by a bird that grabbed them, that could explain the esc error and the drone coming down.
After repairing their products for almost 6 years now, I cannot believe that the gimbal itself did not incur any damage.
Usually you will see "Gimbal Motor Overload" or "Gimbal Stuck", due to the Pitch, Roll or Yaw motor, burning itself up, trying to stay level with the horizon during a crash.
Gotta give DJI's marketing department credit on this one.
    Lowest repair bill ever!
    Good marketing DJI!

Gosh, where do I start? I mean, drone drooping down like a dead bird from the sky is my worst nightmare! How common is this issue? The closest experience to this I had, the drone landing by itself at the alps due to a faulty battery that drooped from 100% fully charged to 0% in less than 60 seconds. But I manage to catch it undamaged, it did not fall. Both you and DJI are also lucky it didn't drop into somebody's property or even worse, on somebody's head. But that seem to be pure luck. When you say be careful when you fly, how would exactly do that, if this is a system error? Fly on the deserts, away from civilizations? And what happened to dual IMU redundancy which is meant to prevent this kind of thing? I am glad you were able to get a replacement that cheap but we should not fool ourselves into thinking DJI would do the same for every random RUclips'r (our fault or not) They look at the level of influence and make decision. Anyway, good video as usual, even though not my favorite topic.

I’ve crashed my Mavic Pro and broke a arm. Was able to order an arm with motor for $50 and repair it myself, just three wires to solder.
My remote control main board fried on my Mavic Pro. I was able to order a new main board and replace the main board with ease. No soldering, just plugging in some wires and mating a couple boards together.
I will say DJI drones are very easy to work on yourself, if you know what you’re doing.
I got into drones by building and flying FPV drones/ quadcopters that I built myself. Back In 2014 when FPV became popular, you couldn’t but a full FPV drone, you had to build one.
It’s very useful to learn to repair your drones by yourself if you don’t have a ton of money and just being able to complete easy repairs yourself.
But if you have the DJI refresh/ repair service that you bought with your drone, use that since it’s free!

Two questions come to mind: 1) What caused the ESC error? and 2) How can it be prevent this from happening? The issue is not how quickly or inexpensive the drone can be repaired, but what can be done to avoid it. Otherwise every time we fly a drone we will be thinking that it can fall from the sky at any minute and, needless to say, the potential liability that can result from the mishap. What is DJI's position in this regard, what do they have to say on this issue? Thanks for sharing your story but it raises many concerns that need to be addressed.

It happened to me with a Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter from about 60 feet over second base at a park baseball field during a test flight after some controller adjustments. Controls were crossed unbeknownst to me and holding the throttle up and to the right long enough eventually resulted in a motor stop command. That was back when Yuneec Customer Service was way better (reportedly) than DJI's. They repaired it in warranty. Have good, careful fun with the new one!

I actually bought a mini 2 three years ago as a backup drone (2 is 1, and 1 is none!), bought the Care Refresh plan for 2 years, and NEVER took it out of the box. My original Mini 2 is a trooper and never quit! I decided to donate the new drone in the box to my Civil Air Patrol unit and went to test it before giving it to them in December of 2023. The left rear motor would not fire up. I called DJI and explained it to them and I recognized that the Care Refresh package had expired in December of 2022! They said to send it in and they would look at it. I sent it (at their expense, which I thought was pretty nice) and two days after they got it, they called me. I paid to have it shipped back and they sent me a brand new unit! Turned out the frame itself had been defective and was preventing the motor from spinning. I can't ask for any better service than that!

I was in Colorado, 1500 miles from home when it went south. DJI fixed it for around $125, IIRC. I now have a Mavic 2 Pro and they significantly improved the gimbal clamp design. No more issues.

ROI is so important. It’s why I haven’t justified buying an Inspire 3 even though it’s something I have really wanted; my ROI for what I do is simply too steep. In my opinion if you can recoup your entire drone cost in less than 5 jobs, then absolutely buy that platform. It’s why I encourage drones like the Mavic 3 over platforms like the Air platform. It’s important to be producing the absolute best content that you can make, but at the same time you don’t want to be backwards into your investment for very long. I talk about this a lot over on my channel. The take home message is try and recoup your investment in fewer than 5 jobs. Also as a side rant, I wish DJI made a dual camera for specifically commercial pilots. Again in my opinion, I’d much rather half their micro 4/3 with a second camera that is super high MP and detail then something with differing focal lengths because I’d love to take stills for clients and swap over to video inside of the same flight. I always see the clients reactions when they see the photos and the first thing they do is pinch and zoom in on the photos, even if a crop is not required. It would be nice to have something that is 48mp at least so they can pinch and zoom in and still see crispness more than a 20MP can currently produce. I envision a 48mp camera with no binning and a second micro 4/3 for video; anywhere from 16-24mp; I think the 16mp would make for some incredible natural low-light possibilities rather than the onboard denoising software - make it natural. Anyways good topic and unfortunate outcome on your drone. I’ve been doing this 11 years and I’ve had only 1 event with a Phantom 4 Pro. Sudden power loss from ESC failure and DJI replaced it. Outside of that I have been very lucky.

I don’t think the propeller was ejected by the crash. Based on the messages in the flight logs, I think it departed the aircraft in flight when the locking tabs on the prop sheared off. The motor idle message was the motor being unloaded after the prop was ejected. If it went in with it, you would have found it close by. That being said, I can’t say enough about DJI Care Refresh. I used it to replace a Mavic 3 that was being a problem child. It had the horizon tilt issue that many of the early Mavic 3’s had, and I had timed out of the initial warranty period. They sent me a new one right away.

Point well made. Never know what could go wrong and when. So always plan for it and be safe where you fly. Thank god you were where you were when it decided to have an ESC error.

I generally can say good things about DJI's repair service - it is rather quick and easy. There is a huge caveat though - I am travelling 100% of my time during the year and in several regions of the world. This restricts me immensely in getting repairs as any service is only a local service. At this point of DJIs development I would have liked a global warranty rather than a regionalised that allows repairs in the region I am currently in rather than having to fly the drone into the region and then have to travel again just to pick it up, which makes it prohibitively expensive. Appreciate its a very personal problem but with many digital nomads this is bound to affect quite a few users.

Why did you get an "ESC" error? Be helpful for many to understand the why to help prevent this happening and causing damage and or injury! Have anything to do with a construction site? I've had drones go bonkers over construction sites before due to the heavy metal in the ground. Thanks!

I had my fpv drone motor fail mid flight about 60 mph and came really close to hitting a moving car. Thankfully I was high enough and it landed in a roof lol. But it was a dji drone and just randomly failed. It totally made me think different. To this day it's in my head every sec of flight

I have State Farm Drone Insurance:
I guess everyone has at on time backed into a tree or crashed OR the event is waiting to happen.
I was flying my DJI Mavic 2 Zoom in a vacant parking lot running the battery down. I happened to look up and it looked like
I hit a big bird which I really it a small wire going from one parking light to another.
I picked up the pieces and my next stop was at the Stare Farm Insurance Claim office. The lady saw the damage and started a claim.
I got on DJI's site and answered all the questions telling them I did not have the DJI Care insurance. I sent it back to them in Fort Worth, Texas for what I thought would be a repair. They kept in touch with me and after a few days they told me it would cost $230 to have it fixed.
I sent them the money and a couple days later I received what I thought was my Mavic 2 Zoom in the mail.
I opened it up and it was a brand new Mavic 2 Zoom.
I gave State Farm the repair bill and they sent me a check.
I believe I pay $75 a year for drone insurance from State Farm.
I don't know how much DJI would charge me per year.

Anyone who flies commercially should have an exact or comparable back up drone to finish up the next week or 2 of jobs. I’ve been flying drones commercially for 9 years and I crashed at least once or twice a year for the first few years, not so much now, maybe once every 2 years. It’s just part of the business for me and DJI care is a must.

When you dish out the cash at the start where you pay 1/2 the drone and then ship it. DJI will automatically send you a replacement which I love and when they receive your drone and figure out the cost they will deduct that from your 1/2 payment and rein verse you that difference. Now you get back in the air so much quicker if you need too.

DJI’s after sales service is unmatched by a wide margin. If you had given it to an independent drone repairer it would take at least twice as long, they’d only attend to the camera and gimbal mechanism(check around for how much those parts cost on the after market) and it will be returned with just general cleaning. Add labour cost and shipping and you know what I’m getting at. I’ll bet you that DJI just gave a brief look at your damaged drone then pulled a completely new one off their shelf and shipped to you pronto

Do you think that people still have this ridiculous misconception that the bigger drone is a more serious business tool? Like if you use the Mini 4/3/2 that you cant get the same job done(for some applications) or people/customers think what you using is a toy just because its small.
