0:46 The sound effect when Gandalf gestures towards Theoden is just one of the small things that made this trilogy so good. In the theatre, that short boom of the bass makes you feel it like his magic is coming out of the screen.
Yea the bass noise whenever Gandalf uses his staff/powers is brilliant. You can almost believe there's an invisible magical force unseen to our eyes that's going on when he does it. I love the fact booting Saruman out of Theoden also drains/tires Gandalf out as the battle of minds takes place, you can see he's genuinely drained by the encounter, which is brilliant again.

So glad I got to see this trilogy in theaters. Scenes like this really reaffirm how much heart and effort was put into it. From the cast on screen to the guys working tirelessly behind it to make it the masterpiece that it would become.
To this day, it still amazes me how smooth the transition from Theoden looking so old and worn out to his actual age is. Just how well the wrinkles, long hair, pale skin and near blind eyes fade. Cant exactly have been easy to achieve in the early 2000´s.
The actor who plays the guard that stopped Gandalf at the entrance just played a parody of Théoden for a channel called Viva La Dirt League, and he kills it. Was well done.

Have to say, the moment I clocked that the mighty Bernard Hill was playing the King figure, I guessed a transformation was on the cards. He was and is too powerful an actor to have the character spend the movie so diminished in his possessed state.
For everyone who doesn't know about lore in this scene, Gandaft was once called "The Grey wizard" which come from his robe color and that form is his nerf form because all wizards in Lotr are once the gods who reincarnate to the human form to help human even Saruman too, Now we see that Gandalf become white which he gain this power by dieing fighting the giant monster name "Barok" then he sent to heaven and reincarnate again with his full power that why White robe is more powerful than grey one
The detail I find fascinating was cut from this clip - right at the beginning, as Gandalf & co. walk into the room, Grima whispers into Theoden's ear that Gandalf's there. The implication being that Saruman would hear those words, drop whatever he was doing at the time and join the call, which becomes apparent as Gandalf unleashes his white power.
While the movie version was visually stunning, it lacked the subtlety of Theodin’s possession by wormtounge in the book. He was poisoned by words for years, not possessed by Sauroman physically. The Ishtari were not allowed to use their supernatural powers while on earth either
@@Toryquinton Not really familiar with LotR, isn't the Istari with the title of; "the White" in charge of their fellows? With Gandalf gaining that title does he effectively take Sauromans place, and does he react in any way to pretty much being fired for currying favor with Sauron?
@toryquinton2677 So then their color title isn't to do with their authority within their group, or which Valar they served, but their character alignment? Like being Lawful Good? Gandalf wasn't promoted to Sauromans role after his fall from grace then, but he does seem to be more powerful after his fight with the Balrog, and now goes by The White. If that marks him as having pure aspirations, why send five guys with four different.. aspirations, rather than all sharing the same goal? Gandalf was the only one to do his job in the end, no? Is that a reflection of his alignment or the Valar he serves? Did none of them receive any oversight from their 'bosses'?
Yeah when I first read the books I had no idea *why* the razing of the shire happened. It should have ended with the crowning of the king or with Frodo sailing to the grey havens without having the shire ruined because it had nothing to do with anything else that happened in the war of the ring.
This is my favourite scene by far from the entire trilogy. It reminds me of my awakening from major depression in 1991 and never fails to move me to tears. Bernard Hill was superb in all his unforgettable scenes as King Theoden, and surely all who marvelled at his great acting and his uniquely human touch now mourn his passing. Aragorn: “For he was a gentle heart and a great king and kept his oaths; and he rose out of the shadows to a last fair morning.”
I like how Gandalf disguised himself by wearing grey cloak made Saruman underestimated him. If Saruman knew Gandalf was stronger than him, he could have killed Theoden immediately. If Theoden died, Rohan couldn’t be saved. Without the help of Rohan, Gondor would be defeated. Aragorn couldn’t led his army to distract Sauron, creating an opportunity for Frodo and Sam to destroy the ring. Only a small detail changed the fate of a whole world.
“I have not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm.” Gandalf knocks people out with his staff so he won’t have to murder them with his tongue.
The small detail of the bruise on Sarumans forehead after Gandalf strikes Theoden King with his staff, but no bruise on Theoden, makes this scene perfect to me.
I love Hama, his kids narrowly escape the Westfold and reunite with their mother at Helm's Deep, his son fights the Uruk Hai, he admits Gandalf into Medusheld with his staff and stays Gamling's hand in this scene, and all of that for him to get his face eaten off by a Warg
