Could A Chrysler 300 Last Longer than a Toyota Camry? (You won't believe it)

  • You won't believe how close the reliability comparison is between a Chrysler 300 and a Toyota Camry. These are two cars that I think just about everyone would pit against each other and say that the Toyota Camry would be a more reliable car. Toyota is known for reliability and for making good cars, but this Chrysler is very different than I thought. You're going to learn a lot when I put Toyota vs Chrysler in this car reliability and longevity discussion.

I had a 2016 chrylser 300 v6 that I bought at 180k miles owned until about 260,000 miles, really had no major issues. I sold that for a 2014 chrylser 300 SRT and it’s been treating me great as well.

As a Toyota owner myself, I’ve noticed the general public places emphasis on when Chrysler has issues (3.6 / 5.7 tick, 3.7 overheating) but ignore any of Toyota’s issues (2.4 and 1.8 burning oil, god awful truck frame rigidity). Everyone has their issues and you always have a chance of getting a car more troublesome than the average for that model year.

My experience with a Chrysler 300 was very positive. It was a reliable and solid car that lasted for 300K miles without any problems. I sold it eventually, but I still think it is comparable to a Lexus in quality. I understand that some people prefer a Camry, but I find it bland. The Chrysler 300 has improved a lot over the years and the model shown in the video is much more dependable than the earlier ones. I would choose a 300 over a Camry any day.

OK I get Toyota has a history of reliability, but in my family we currently have a 2000 Dodge 1500, 2007 Dodge Charger R/T, a 2022 RAM 1500 Classic and a 2014 Jeep Compass Sport. We (knock wood I guess) have not had ANY major issues. In fact, the Compass just had a run in with an elk on the highway and SURVIVED well enough to drive home and insurance just approved repairing it. Yeah the interiors on some lower trim models is questionable (just like on any manufacturers lower trims, including Toyota) but I don't really see that as an issue, the Compass being the most plasticy of the bunch. No TIPM issues (yet).

Thanks for sharing and yes many people love the product and have had success. I too own a Ram and overall it’s pretty dependable but I had leaking water pumps, expansion tanks. Random emissions codes hard to diagnose and a wonky power window system that works intermittently. It has some issues and panel alignment, paint and cosmetics are a bit weak, but honestly it never lets me down, does not burn oil and runs like a champ so it’s a pretty reliable rig overall

Great Video, I own a 300 and a lot of this stuff does occur, but you're wrong about that TIPM being common with the 300's. I'm in a 300 Group with 38,000 Members and know completely what's up.and a lot of the stuff also only happens with the First Generations. Also I live in Michigan and after one winter underneath looks brand new still in my 21 Touring L, but my 20 Durango after one winter of ownership was covered in that light surface rust throughout. And the Transmission is only finicky around the years they First started using it. I can honestly say it feels amazing in my 21 and makes the car feel a lot faster than its rated. You can lierally feel a nice clean push from each shift of the Torque flight, and it's NEVER searching for gears with clean predictable Shifts every time as well. When Parked on a Incline it does clunk a little, but if you put your Emergency Break on when doing so, it won't at all.

My parents bought new a 2006 Camery loaded with V6. What I hated about the car was it had a horrible accelerator lag, Toyota said this is normal and the seats were like a 1980 Chevette, very uncomfortable. The car was very reliable.
We have from new a 2005 Ram Cummins and 2008 Magnum Hemi AWD. The truck has had a new Turbo and 2 multi function switches and the Magnum received a new control board inside the transmission that put it into limp mode. Also it eats rotors, gets a new front set every 30,000 mi. It just starting to have intermittent window issues. The interior of both are pretty cheap plastic.
Since the 300 is going to be discontinued, this weekend we are going to see if it would be worth replacing the Magnum.

I now have a Lexus ES350, which for those who don't know, is a Toyota Avalon that has been slightly re-engineered by Lexus. It is and has been the one car that I can say checks every single box when it comes to style, comfort, space, and most importantly, reliability. Granted it's about 3 levels up from a Camry, but even if the infotainment system dies, the car will still drive far longer than most without goofy drive train issues.

EVERY car today has a plastic interior....unless you buy into the high end market.
    I have owned four Chrysler 300's, (still own the srt8), since 2016, 2009 300c 5.7, 2006 srt8 6.1, 2020 300s 3.6 and a 2019 300s 5.7.
The 2009 5.7 was the greatest automobile I ever owned, comfortable, reliable and fast. The ONLY problem I had with the car was the plastic radiator drain valve began leaking, so I just replaced the radiator. 43,000 miles when I bought it and totaled at around 175,000 miles by a deer in the road.
The v6 was a great car but I felt the '09 was much nicer, especially the Boston Acoustics sound system...just wonderful.
No problems with the v6 but wanted to trade up to the v8 drove it for awhile and loved it, (not as great a car as the '09), but I do like the 8spd. trans.
Just traded it for a Chevy SS...the Chryslers are certainly better highway cruisers and have certain things going for them over the Chevy.
I will keep the SRT8... low miles still with ZERO problems.

Personally I find the Camry to be pretty bland and boring to drive but the gas mileage is fantastic. Not a fan of the Toyota infotainment system either. I will say that changing the oil on the Camry is among the easiest I've ever seen since the filter and the drain plug are right next to one another.

Quality Control problems with the Chrysler 300S? It may be due to Canada receiving all of the defects and misfit autos from America. smh I own 2 Chrysler 300s, a 2005 300C and a 2018 300 S. I have experienced no problem whatsoever with either of my 2 cars. Could your video be a hit job to benefit Toyota?

I gave Chrysler two chances. My 2008 blew had the 2.7 motor that blew up and my 2016 300s awd had 2 transmission replacements. It felt like the trans would slip then catch with a forceful thud and a bang sound almost every time I hit the brakes. The car only had 60k miles I loved everything about it except for the reliability. It was also a fight with the dealership to actually diagnose an issue. Sad to say it but my 2016 stick shift mustang gt is significantly more reliable.

Though I have never noticed this on Chrysler specifically, please keep an eye on that cover, behind the rear differential, some call it a pumpkin, big round piece in the center. That could have Started leaking fluid and got overlooked too long in your original rear end. I have never noticed this problem on a Chrysler car but I wouldn’t rule out the possibility though

As a scientist I’ve always taken issue with associative reliability ratings being used to promote a vehicles actual chances of longevity.
Like anything else, there are hundreds of confounding variables. The largest one being the owner itself. How many Toyota forums show Toyota owners discussing changing transmission fluid, brakes fluids, power steering, etc etc. There are entire sections of the internet dedicated to the subject of how to make your Toyota last 300k..
Now compare that with the hot tub salesmen stereotype you eluded to for the Chrysler.
I’m no Chrysler 300 fan. I own a Tacoma and a Jeep. And I’ve had to rebuild the valve train for that very 3.6.
But believe it or not Chrysler does just as much testing, and puts just as many miles into their engineering as Toyota.
The elephant in the room will always be confounding variables. The demographic the 300 and the Camry attract, are major contributors, and in some cases a self fulfilling prophecy of how “reliable” they will be.

I am on my 3rd 300…2 x 2010s (Touring and a Limited)…regular maintenance and sway bar links about every 50000k…and timing belts at 160,000kms…2 years ago got a 2018 300S RWD…3.6L and very peppy…buying these used for next to nothing, a lot of car and look and drive amazing…keep up maintenance on these cars and pretty much bullet proof..and with the sport mode on 300S driving in town is much less sluggish and much more direct pep taking off from lights and slows it down in sharp turns. Comparing a Camry to a 300 is like a Ford Fusion to a Lincoln Continental. On the highway the 300 is a much quieter, smoother and powerful car. I have had the same mechanic now for 10 years and he consistently stated 300s are tanks when looked after properly. Change the oil every 6000k, put a can of Gumout Tune up in every 3 months, sway bar links every 50000k and regular brakes etc. Plus 100% assembled in Canada at GM’s Oakville plant. They stopped making them after 2023 model year as sales consistently dropped since 2005….some say they look dated but those whom have the 5.7L beasts dolled up have collector editions that will be sought after 20 years from now. I have not seen yet a better looking sedan on the road to this day…exude muscle, comfort and stunning looks. Plus the 20 inch tires on mine keep it gripped on the road. With winter tires on it, I can go through a lot of deep snow and brake easily. Look at used ones and you will be shocked when comparing to other cars at the bargains to be had on them.

Hi! I watch your videos from time to time,I’m not much of an exotic car guy(ridiculous prices and maintenance as well)I veer more toward your average car ie mass produced. I think you should have called this video “let trash a 300” cause that’s all you did. Very unfair as I own a 2008 300 and its been really great(3.5 v6)I bought it with 131000 miles and now has a bit over 145000. I’ve only had to replace a brake solenoid(about $1700 parts and LABOR). I replaced the radio unit right after I bought it because I wanted something more modern so I can’t say to the performance of original radio. The car has been really good and it is a daily driver. I have an 06 gx470 and the 300 gets way better gas mileage. Nothing is falling apart inside, only complaint is a little rust that developed in the bottom rear wheel well. But these cars aren’t as bad as you say. And yes I agree that the Toyota is a more reliable vehicle. But you don’t really cross shop a 300 with a Camry. I mean you just don’t

Hi Mark, your information on Chrysler was a bit exaggerated.
For one, you drive BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, a lot of foreign expensive vehicles that your local mechanic in town would shy away from if it wasn’t the basic repairs that you might do yourself because many other repairs can be very difficult to do with the way these exotic cars are designed and put together. Chrysler, local garages would tackle just about any repairs necessary because they are more common and familiar to people. Unless the owner has a warranty on the car, the vehicle typically would not go to the dealer because it is unnecessary, time consuming and expensive.
The dash, I understand you have a pet peeve for plastics, rubber but on these cars with the exception of vandals, the cars are built pretty durable on the inside and doesn’t usually pose a problem.
Overheating on Chryslers, yes, the car is known for that, the radiator goes, water pumps, head gaskets so anyone who knows this brand is going to watch that temperature gauge more closely to avoid excessive damage to their vehicle. However, I can tell you that the issue isn’t so much a threat, just something someone who owns a Chrysler should know to watch carefully so they don’t cause more damage to their vehicle. Most of the time, the damage is minimal and easy to repair but it is not a regular occurrence. Electrical issues are also not a common issue with Chrysler. I have had window regulators go as with any other vehicle, radios, again, not a regular notorious issue but those radios can be replaced cheaply because Chrysler is a pretty easy vehicle to repair without using a specialist.
I understand that with the vehicles that you favor, they are exotic and many mechanics won’t want to touch it because they can be difficult for someone who isn’t specifically trained on them but Chrysler is not like that. You don’t need to take your Chrysler to the dealer unless it is for a dealer warrantied issue, otherwise a local mechanic can do the job cheaper and I understand much quicker than the dealer would., I would typically prefer a Chrysler because they are very comfortable vehicles. The transmissions in Chrysler wears out much quicker than they used to though so that has been a disappointment though.
I can’t comment on Toyota because I really am not a fan of them. I find them very uncomfortable, blah and boring cars. I have known Toyota to have transmissions slipping, burning oil and common electric issues that go far beyond a brief flash in the instrument cluster. I do appreciate all your videos. Your information in this one was exaggerated, more dramatic than reality. I watch for issues that would cause a problem, like not being to see your instrument panel, safety or ability to operate the vehicle due to electrical issues. That’s a problem, the plastic is not a issue unless it cracks and breaks apart to the point that it causes bodily injury. So far, that doesn’t seem to be an issue. I’m not sure that I personally would favor Toyota over Chrysler, I have not heard anything that makes me feel that they would get me where I need to go for an extended period of time without a crap ton of money spent on it.
The front end alinement issue on Chrysler has been a typical perk but again, for the cost of tires and the time that you can get out of the tires, I would not sweat over that and I wouldn’t say that you won’t have that problem with even the so beloved Toyota.
You answered my question about your truck. I never took you as a Chrysler person so I was convinced that it was family members vehicle because it just didn’t fit personal taste. I’m sorry, that was just fascinating to me

depends on how they're maintained more than anything though a Chrysler 300 is rated to last around 200,000 miles when well maintained similar to a Chevrolet malibu though a Toyota Camry is rated to last between 200,000 and 300,000 miles at minimum but can easily go past that ditto for its Lexus counterpart the ES series mind you the Camry LE is expected to start at 28,000 for 2024 model year while the Lexus ES starts at 48,000 the Camrys also been around 8 model years longer than Lexus has correct Camry debuted for 1983 model year while Lexus debuted for 1990 model year but both reached their top sales in 2007 model year Camry with 473,000 and Lexus ES 250 with 83,000 Camry 4 door sedan is going into its 9th generation for 2024 while the ES is going into its 8th generation for example last year The ES 250 sold 41,500 while the Camry sold 295,201 or roughly 7.1/1 mind you roughly 5.3% of those sales in 2007 came from the Solara coupe/convertible the coupe ended production in July 2008 while the Convertible soldiered on until June 2009 due to it out selling the coupe 2:1 there were two gens of the Solara over its 10.75 years of production and roughly 600,000 units sold in that time roughly 4,600,000 Camry sedans sold in the US in that decade + nearly 8x as many Solara's which is part of why the later was discontinued there weren't that many Convertibles around in mass production cars at the time though there were some notable luxury convertibles such as the last gen Cadillac Eldorado or Mercedes SL 500 in mass production cars there were the Solara the Chrysler Sebring the relaunched Dodge Charger etc. had convertibles in the 2000s though the Eldorado was discontinued in 2002 after 50 years in production the Sebring debuted in coupe form for 1995 model year and Convertible and Sedan form for 1996 model year the Coupe and convertible was directly derived from its predecessor the Lebaron while the sedan was derived from the Cirrus cloud car my late maternal grandfather's 2nd wife drove a 1st gen 1997 Chrysler Sebring convertible when I was a teenager late 90s early 2000s hers was a JXI trim finished in deep Amathyst Purple/sandstone tan and purple is a rare paint color for cars only .3% of cars sold annually are painted purple the two most common standard crayon box colors used each year blue and red each receive over 8.5% percent of cars sold each year are painted shades of those colors for example the 2024 Camry gets 4 new colors Brownstone brown Ruby Flaire red Galactic Aqua and a 2nd shade of white and a couple of combos with Midnight black metallic roof option

I drove a Comcorde/LHS compared to a Toyota Camry both in good shape about 3 years ago. The Chrysler steered better and rode better but the 2017 Camry was quicker and of course more modern looking.and a few more modern options.Non-turbo a must. A few moderm options goimg with Concorde/LHS cars. Unless I buy a different sedan my next car 300 2011 and up. Now 2011 and 2012 Avalon Limited to me is a strong contender to both cars including the 2011 and up 300 and preferred over any Camry and are the best Avalon's. Outside of a valve cover leak 3.5L Toyota oil leaks are costly to fix Chrysler's generally less espacially around the timing covers a lot less. Please use severe service schedule on any daily driver.

Great review by all measures like usual.
Thanks honestly, I was always trying to get more information about the Chrysler. It depreciate like a rock falling off a cliff. The interior is almost 90% just plastic with cheap feeling.
I'm glad I didn't get trapped buying such a junk burden.
The Camry by the way is an immortal vehicle that last forever if taken care of.
Thanks again and great salutation from the the southern neighbor 🇺🇸

Toyotas last because in my experience the owners drive like they're driving miss Daisy. Dodge owners drive hard because it's more fun .

I had a 2000 Chrysler 300M brand new. Engine made in Mexico. Overheated from casting flashing from engine block. Never again will I buy. On top of that, many other repairs that shouldn’t be needed. I will always stick with Toyota reliability. Don’t get suckered in to Chrysler!😮

I’ll take the 300 over car Toyota Camry anything the Chrysler it’s a better car stronger, and more safe than any Toyota but it’s funny you talk about all the bad stuff off of a Chrysler 300 but you never say nothing bad about the Toyota Camry it’s not a perfect car. Has more issues than the Chrysler 300 do your research. Specially, the 2.5 engine with a high fuel pressure pump.
