Haters on RUclips: it'll never work
Robert: hold my cigarette
lol pretty much the way it will go lol
I propose cannabis as an obvious improvement on the smoke source :P
Thinking the same. Giggle giggle
Cannabis does not help if you have a nicotine addiction
lol
Next video is automated snack launcher into lazy boy
remember to collect and reprocess the hemp ash as it can make rms super cap quality ink
RMS, it will be interesting to see that Tesla turbine as a blower on that gasifier. I like the cigarette smoke test, the brighter the glow from the cigarette, the better the draw.
When I saw you pull a pack out with the addition of a lighter I smiled.... but then thought " Some dick is going to lecture us on smoking " ( I was right ) We all have our habits , I smoke a bit to kick my thinker into gear when solving problems. Anyway.... Bob.... what a guy you are.... I build about everything when needed but get solutions from your channel when I get stuck. You are a talented man.... thanks for all you do.
I'm a n00b with non-carbon energy physics. Every new thought I have, I google to read already-thunk'd material, and of course Rob has produced at least 1 video, often several, on my brilliant thought. Faithfully, my thought-chains lead me to Rob's teachings every step of the way. For this video, my favorite segment is 6:25 to 6:40 "[... toke, blow, smoke goes in and rushes out the chimney]... and you should be able to... [adjusts the throttle to kill the noise]... [cough]..."
This gives a new meaning to blowing smoke up an orifice...
lol - it certainly does!
Great idea. When I built my homemade forge I used a hair dryer. I took the heating element out of it and all the wiring and ran the fan from a 12v transformer and connected it up to a Hoover pipe and used the metal pipe to put in the bottom of the forge for cool air. I found that warmed and hot air didn't work very well.
Maybe the denser cold air had more oxygen to fuel the fire 😮😅
The Tesla Turbine is much better than the vacuum cleaner motor it's also more fun by far
100% agree mate
much better in several ways as it will produce a far greater negative pressure for the hot gasses to expand and cool and mix before the inlet, then being recompressed higher than atmospheric at its outlet as in two stirling type cycles of the four doing work in one device...
@@paulmaydaynight9925 I agree
Exsalant video! I didn't realize you smoked, lovely use of the cigarette , I don't understand the use of this device yet but I will learn soon! Staying tuned thanks!
The "cool" factor just went up a few notches with the addition of a Tesla Turbine. 😄
lol - for sure it did
When spinning up an experimental turbine, best stand outside of plane rotation.
Love the idea. Also a free thinking inventor / up cycler and is not afraid of smoking critics. Keep enjoying.
it's because I have my own ideas about things mate lol
Thank you I needed that explanation and demonstration particularly the cigarette smoke part.
Now I have an extra excuse to have some -delay igniters- I mean cigarettes around.
For me, the key lesson I took from this is that I'll have to start smoking again... how else would I be able to check if I get the extract working correctly???🤣⚡😁 Anyway... great to see safe smoking in action!! 😱💥🤣
Sharp! your a sharp fella Rob.. I have truly enjoyed watching you build this.. I understand the workings of it now and am anxious to start my own (after I view them all together one more time).. So, pencil to paper and having a think is on.. I will share my design when it is finished.. Carry on.. I am getting my groove back I can feel it!
that is awesome news mate and please do share!
Genius, another really interesting video, thanks Rob:-)
cheers mate
Looking forward to everything coming together!
cheers mate
Going in style all the way.Great Video.....Thanks.
lol - cheers mate
Interesting video!
Strangely you can't find many videos on reversed Tesla turbines in youtube.
I was hoping for a more ... refined implementation :) and test - ones that give better idea of the airflow, noise and perhaps air pressure.
But it seems to work as a proof of concept :)
Y should put your hand with cigarette between fingers on intake hole and se how fast it can smoke the entire cigar,.. You make so called cigarette gassifier :)
Cigarettes per minute, the best windspeed unit
@@MrCrazyChemist Its unit of suction :D
lol we can. measure fan power by cpm - cigarettes per minute - awesome suggestion from The creative Chemist lol
Great video sir.....
Brilliant..... exciting!
The inlet to the turbine might be flared to the outlet of the gasifier - it will pull ridiculous amounts through it...when it’s spinning smoothly. And I really like the bubbler idea from a few videos ago to clean and cool the gas
cheers mate
haven't seen a Marlborough commercial in long time!
.....I don't know about Marlborough and Rob wouldn't be exactly the image for Benson and Hedge's, Peter Stuyvesant, Camel but he could be a Winfield man and Paul Hogan of crocodile Dundee was the bloke for Winfield ,the image was sorta " anyway let's get on with it ".
I'm surprised I could remember the brand names but in the day the advertising was all over the place in all media . From the ads Paul moved on to his own comedy TV show then Hollywood .
lol - not sure if I qualify as a Marlboro man lol
Rob you do enjoy poking the bear :-) Also, as has been pointed out already, we can see through the intake hole that the turbine is rotating the wrong way in the volute but still doing an amazing job of moving air!
lol - I do a little mate - and cheers I'll swap the leads
Marvelous
Ok first I must say I'm ecstatic over the power those motors had. I would had went with a RC car motor or drone motor but they don't cost 5 or 10 pounds. Awesome mate. Here is a thought, make a attachment where you can attach a dremel as the motor when need. That way you get high rpms and adjustable and you hook it up when in use only, just a thought, lol - me brainstorm but would be cool but Luke might miss the dremel.
Dremell's frequently have little drum sanding attachments. rubber drums over which a sandpaper loop can be place
Run such, without sandpaper, against a shaft or outside of a drum... And drum will want to turn.
I did think of a drremel mate but they are 50 pounds or so - I was looking for a cheap knock off when I ran across the hand blender
@@ThinkingandTinkering I can understand that mate, yeah I didn't know if you had one or not on hand, I had thought I saw Luke with one on another video, I must had mistaken.
Loud for a Tesla turbine. Sound is a direct result of vibration/friction = inefficiency. Love the idea, just needs some tuning.
I am sure it was out of balance lol
Are U a Londoner? I live in Fort Collins, Colorado USA & became friends with a fella from the U.K., calls himself a Londoner, & is one of the coolest cats I've ever met, lol.
The bellows would be cool too :)
I 100% agree lol
I've had the plan to build a Tesla turbine for a while now for a gasifier, to go on the hot side. I figured it was the best possible design as it in theory should be the most able to tolerate particulates and tar, not to mention heat.
Hi rob, you wouldn't have to pass flue gas through the fan impeller, just use it to create a pressure drop in the end of the gassifier. Potentially as a forced draught for the engine?
So how would this Tesla pump need to be modified to run at lower cfm volume. And higher pressure?
Seems like the Tesla turbine would fit the bill and that it provides brush/spark ignition separation from the gas, and may be isolated from the heat, and the fact that you have it, And you have completed the build, it just seems to fit, nice job, and congratulations on mastering that brazing rod👍There is a soldering iron I saw in a very early popular magazine called "science and mechanics" where was highlighted a man who used a carbon rod and Lionell train power supply speed control transformer (variac ?) and was able to braze aluminum together along with many other things by making direct contact with the carbon Rod and heating the metal, there was also an explanation of a few fluxes or a surface preparation he used to achieve all this braising/soldering action, I believe the magazines are still accessible in a pdf archive, it was a Cover highlight, again thank you for all your videos, they are quite splendid.👍 still have not figured out how to become a supporter, as simple or obvious as this may be, a bit of personal instruction on that would help me a great deal if you have ever time. ty
nice tips mate - I will try and hunt out that article - I think you need to be on a desktop or laptop to join - the join button doesn't show up on mobile devices - but if you aren't on a mobile there is a join button under the video and a link in the description and on my home page is a join button - cheers
I saw this on another channel testing computer fans, but if you have a fog machine, you can load its output into an empty laundry detergent jug. Then you have a nice pourable smoke device.
nice one mate
For my boiler I was planning to use commercially made domestic boiler radial blower with a one way valve, that delivers about 200m3/h. 29 euros well spent. I like the idea of the Tesla turbine.
I just like the Tesla turbine mate - but yours is a good plan
It's turning backwards! More efficient going the other direction. I suspect you will end up with a squirrel cage blower that has a higher differential capability to get adequate pressure and volume to overcome the back pressure of the multi-chambered sawdust filter.
yeah maybe but Tesla Turbines are cool!
I think this is the first time I've learned something new in years . . didn't know you could run a Tesla turbine in reverse.
6:11 my good sir, is that where all your genius ideas come to mind? ;)
Just the excuse I needed to smoke indoors, other than testing smoke detectors 😜
AWESOME! The Tessa turbine idea really fits the whole scheme of the project! 240 volts AC in England? I bet small hobby welders work amazingly well, I have several 120v here in the states and they are hit or miss depending on how good of a circuit you have available. Excited to see it working!
@Rik rik yes it is. 120v and 240v 60hz but some places don't have the 240v outlets. An oven is 240 but usually hardwired and a dryer outlet is 30A but not always accessible easily, like the place I rent. A 50 foot extension cord would work but unrealistic.
I like the idea too but practicality will win out if it doesn't work - even so I plan on trying it lol
The viscosity of gases increases with temperature, so you may get better pumping if you place it before the heat exchanger.
Good one.
Thank you! Cheers!
Incense makes sense
So is a Tesla turbine used in "reverse" more efficient than a propeller or a ducted Fan?
You may well have found both a solution for second hand smoke and a disincentive for smoking itself.
Looking forward to the next installment down the track.
.......I remember mechanics using lungfuls of smoke to trace vacuum leaks under bonnets . Today they can use smoke generators for the task .
lol - cheers mate
It would be interesting to block off the end of outlet of the pump and see how much pressure it can build up. It also seems like it would be easy to stack those up to make even higher pressures.
nice one mate
What sort of voltage do you think you'd want to run the motor at? Your typical boost converter from Aliexpress top out at 50-60V if you're looking at running it from a 12V battery.
to be honest I will probably just build my own
What is the approach to preventing tar buildup in the "lungs" part of the gasifier?
You can't, unless you could heat the aluminium hot 🔥 enough to melt it off😅lol
Could you one of these through a stirling engine?
I watch virtually everything you make within a day after you post it, and don't know how this one slipped past almost 2 years ago. I was searching tesla turbine compressor to see if there was anything on this, so as to get an idea how well it would work or not. My inclination is that its capability to compress is in part, a function of disk diameter and rate of rotation but how does it compare to a centrifugal compressor in efficiency?
I have learned to smoke cigarette in this video. Now I am a chain-smoker.
I'm afraid that the inner workings of the turbine will get clogged very fast. The gasifier's smoke is very rich in suspainded particulated matter , which is also quite sticky... u need a system that draws the air "indirectly" or through a secondary action that does not expose any moving parts to the gasses being produced...
great work as always!!
Ejector maybe?
Smoking and playing with mains power. I also like living on the edge.
Watch the yew tewbe content moderators heads explode.
yeah they are going to be unhappy with this one lol
I suspect you may need a way to bypass that once the motor starts because that is unlikely to have enough flow-through capacity to allow the motor to continue running. Also, it seemed to be running the wrong way for the housing...?
Yes for this type of design, the blower (sucker?) is run only to start the burn. Once the motor fires up, it draws the flow through and the blower is switched off. Hence Robert says "it only needs to run 3-4 minutes to start the gasifier"
yes mate - that's the plan
775 motor on mains?
HI I WAS LOOKING FOR THE SEALENT YOU USED, ( GUM GUM ) AND DID NOT FIND ANYTHING. DID I HEAR THE NAME CORECTLY OR IS IT SOMETHING ELSE? I LOOKED ON AMAZOM AND GOOGLE AND DID NOT FIND ANY THING LIKE THAT. COULD YOU PUT A LINK TO WHERE IT MIGHT BE FOND?
To the Author, where is all the aluminium scratch ing noise coming from? It looked like you had enough clearance on what i could see😮 aluminium rubbing on something makes quite a distinctive noise 😅lol, good work and 💙 your videos, am trying to find if you have alternative coil winding videos on axial flux motors other than the serpentine style
Tesla turbines are so cool
for sure
More like Archimedean spiral. Gears are involute. Good gears are.
Centrifugal surface tension cool
for sure
When you did the first run of it, it looked like the turbine was turning in the wrong direction.
At 60 V I thought well that’s quite noisy, you have some flutter. I’m still laughing that you made it run on 240V, almost a jet engine in the house, at least a lawn mower. Happily you recovered by saying you need the bearings changed, lol!😆
Later today, out detecting for gold, Rob. Looking good.
awesome mate
Cigarettes are so last century.
A good source of visual air flow would be a vape or one of those plumbers smoke pellets.
just run the Tesla turbine motor off a 12v battery connected to buck converter. fixing the bearings would be good, that thing made that motorbike sound whisper quite LOL
lol - yeah it was noisy lol
I think I'll pop out for a smoke after this 👍
I was just lighting a cigarette when he took out the king of cigarettes 😁
I can see the concept of a bellows driven by a Stirling engine sprouting in some minds!
I love the idea of bellows
@@ThinkingandTinkering yeah, I guess the Stirling engine would be kind of useless before the whole thing gets hot, and remain useless after it heats up (you don't really need added ventilation then!)
Lol! I'm glad that didn't come flying apart! My second thought was the only thing that was missing was a blindfold and you almost had a old style execution if the fan was your firing squad. Be careful, be safe, don't need an RMS snuff film! Lol
there is no life with out risk mate lol
you will never hear the last of that cig i say smoke what you got smoking almost anything makes it better
I'm surprised about the Tesla Turbine because I thought it needs much higher REPs to work properly. - Seen some in a region of 5000 upm and more.
Good to know: I think a Tesla Turbine is easy to build.
Very interesting anyway!
I agree mate it is an easy build and the efficiency does shoot up at high rpm - but yes I agree with you - interesting
Clearly your lack of fume extraction during welding has given you a terrible cough! ;)
I got two induction motor powered blowers from a scrapyard. I paid £3 for the pair. I'll be making a fume extractor with one of them. I'm undecided about the other at this stage though both work.
lol - could be - like your idea mate
I had to look up “gubbins.” I had never heard that one before.
lol - I wonder if it is a dialect word?
Is that motor rated for continuous use?
It won't be running continuously, just for a few minutes to start the fire in the gasifier. Once the motor starts, it sucks the gas through its own piping and the blower is switched off
no - but then it won't be used continually
.... Aaaand showing smoking on tv... Boom! demonitized :)
Apparently not.
lol - it's not TV mate
@@ThinkingandTinkering yeah, I know, I was on a roll, so... :D
I think it's insulting to Nikola Tesla that you didn't run the exhaust of the gasifier into the input of the Tesla turbine and then the exhaust of the turbine into the gasifier so that you could shut the motor off after it started up
Admit it, you were just looking for an excuse to smoke indoors. Oi, you got a license for that!? (Just messing with you)
Air Battery! Turbine to generate electricity and pump to generate compressed air...
When out and about and have no AC power I think maybe a 12v geared motor to get the RPM required. I think you need to find out what RPM is required for the Tesla turbine to start working and get a 12v motor to suit.
or I could use a buck convertor mate - always more than one solution lol
@@ThinkingandTinkering very true (I know you meant boost converter to step up voltage) there is always more than one way to skin a cat
Was it just me or did the Tesla turbine look like it was turning backwards?
I dunno mate - I'll check it out
Each to their own but smoking isnt good for you robert
Love the gasifier series so far
each to their own indeed mate - cheers
I don't want to start a riot here, but, we get our information on cigarettes from who? And they want us to take a what? Do they really know the truth about anything?
Its well documented that its bad from the nhs, but like i said, if robert wants to thats his own choice, i personally dont like to see a geneious like robert smoking on his videos thats all but again thats his choice, like its mine to watch his videos
A shorter drive shaft should cut oscillation down + a piece of rubber pipe as a couple, acting loosely as a uj ? Bob Marley would be more effective in illustrating this point!!! Lol though tintin illustration equally shows the flow:) smoke ring cannon?
nice one mate - I particularly like the couple idea
Could you run a turbine into another turbine
good excuse to have a smoke 😂
i made mistake of feeding 230vac to one of those vacuum fans 😬
lol
This whole series of build videos COULD be moved to the members only section and only post a teaser video of the gasifier when it is done for the general public if Rob's choice of visual testing methods offends too many people.
=@
Please don't!
I'm ok with Rob's methods, and can't really afford the membership.
Scrapyard collection also tends to be my thing, and Rob's great at showing how to make the most of what's at hand.
yes it could mate and I folks do get a little 'insistent' about the cigarette instead of concentrating on what is being shown I may do just that - cheers - but tbh I think f*@£ google is right most don't really care
RMS shotgunning a Tesla turbine ...
240vdc, and she blows!
efficiency of these things shoots up when rpm goes upon that's for sure
you need a 3D printer for sure
That motor sound does not seems quite alright. :(
Good video. I bet you are a chess player.
He made a chess set and talked about playing a couple weeks ago.
yes I am mate
Now we are smoking!
I had no idea this video featured a cigarette! LoL
for sure lol
how badly did you need a smoke break during this project? lol
Very load, but that's life I suppose!
I am afraid so
The best advert for taking up smoking again....ever
To calm the cigarette police, maybe you could substitute your ciggie for a beehive smoker. I wouldn't, but that's entirely up to you mate. Also, wouldn't the intake on the genset have enough vacuum to draw in the sin gas once it's being produced? Or, are you thinking of compressing the sin gas which is why you are using fans that draw large volumes of air?
......I see , along the lines of starting the generator on a float bowl or two of petrol to start the draw through. If it's enough initial draw .
He does say that it will only be running 3-4 minutes to start the gasifier. So I'd say the intention is to switch off the blower once the engine starts.
I do like to poke the bear every now and then mate lol - and yes mate it does -I am only using the fan to get it started - once the ten set is running I will turn the fan off
@@ThinkingandTinkering Sweet. Can you compress sin gas?
That was 60v I'm not sure I want to see 240v
lol
Wow that's noisy.
it certainly was!
I know you my not like me commenting this, but to be onest I'm a bit disappointed that you smoke.
(just for clarity I'm not trying to push my opinion, it would be a bit contradicting if I would as I don't like opinion pushers).
we all do what we do mate and no one leads a pure enough life to be able to point at others and say don't do that - well - in my opinion - so I don't mind you saying it - I just ignore it - sorry
@@ThinkingandTinkering I know, I just couldn't help but put I out. Just be sure that I dond intend to point a finger or shame any one, just my opinion. Onestly I cood almost be clasefied as a tea adict, which isn't much diferent to being somthing like a coffee adict.
@Rik rik I think Instine sed ones, that smokeing helps the neves, or somthing along those lines.
