I always appreciate the experience of others with the Stanley Cook Set; thanks for adding your thoughts. I have found that, if you replace the plastic tab on the top with a keyring, you can then close the handle under the key ring, lock the handle, and hang the pot by the keyring. I've done this a dozen times or more, and, even with a full pot, waiting for a boil, it holds. I wouldn't shake it vigorously, but when you lock the handle by pushing the little thing that locks it, it will hold its weight in water, and you do not need to drill a hole to hang a bail. At any rate, that's my two cents; thank you for sharing yours.
@@RedBranchBushcraft If you use a #2 S-biner clip, the clip fits neatly under the handle clamp for the Stanley cook kit, and you can easily clip or unclip it as needed. Also, the S-clip doesn't sit quite flat on the lid of the cook kit, so it doesn't get as hot. Much better than a key ring. ------ Where did you say you got that pouch for your cook kit? Three Trees Design?
I replace the tab on the lid with the spring from one of those spring loaded wooden clothes pins. Hook the two ninety degree ends through the loop on the lid. It will stay up so you can grab it and stays cool enough to handle. I’ve watched loads of videos about hacks for these and I’ve never seen this mod.
Because I love your accent, LOL, I subscribed.😉 Good information too! The Stanley Adventure Cook Set is AWESOME!!! First piece of backpacking and camping adventures that I purchased. The thing is solid! Happy Trails!😁
I made a mod to my Stanley cup that doesn't require any additional "things" to make it work. It isn't my idea and I can't remember the YTer that posted the method, but it's brilliant, as you lot would say! He simply folded the cup's handle over the top until the looped end was centered in the air over the cup. He marked that spot on the plate that the handle hinges on and serves to lock the handle in its open and stored positions and then used a Dreemel Tool to grind two additional notches in it to lock the handle in that intermediate position. If you hook the handle with a stick or suspend it from a tripod with a cord or hook, from that point, it will balance in all directions, even better than it would with a common bail, with no added parts or holes required. I thought is was genius. I expect that a small rotary burr chucked up in the same drill that you used to drill your holes would work in place of a Dreemel, if you don't have one. Cover up those holes that cause your regrets with some aluminium HVAC tape.
@@mileszimmerman8767 Unless you're from the State of California, then you will get cancer and experience reproductive harm, just like all modern materials cause in CA. LOL
I just dremeled the part where the cook pot handle is so that I can fold the handle over on an angle and make it dangle just over the pot so it can be hung just if was a bale handle.
Thanks for the heads up, I was gonna do that to my cook set but never got around to it. Thank goodness I didn't now. Way Point Survival does the Stanley cook set hacks...and they are amazing. That’s real dedication. You made the mistake and still chose to use it for seven years. It doesn’t get more conservative than that. Talk about recycling you’re the man.
What if you drilled the two holes about 90 degrees from where they are now, with one of the holes just off to the side where the handle is? Then you could pour sideways.
I've been through a couple of them over the years. The only mod I ever make is to yank the plastic handle off the lid and take a 3" piece of wire coat hanger and fashion a tab to replace the plastic. There's no beating that little $14 piece of kit though. Stay frosty.
I'm considering a few mods. Thanks to you and a few others, IF I drill the holes, putting the hole just above the handle mount and directly opposite would remove the spillage issue. Though I think the clamp is a friendlier option...
@@RedBranchBushcraft May have found another solution. (Untested) 50lb fishing leader wire fits under the lip, put 2 loops in it (if wire loss is a concern, a few dabs of JB Weld should work)...
Simple, think it through. drill the holes 90 degrees from where you did, near the handle area and across center to the other side. Won't drip when you pour from the sides like one would normally do.
#John Swanson I was thinking this exact same thing. This guy, Red Branch Bushcraft quite obviously does not think things through before modifying his gear. Sounds like he may be a bloody tosser. A Wanker? Oh my God not a Wanker amongst us!! Ha. Ha. Ha.
#Red Branch Bushcraft@@RedBranchBushcraft I was just teasing and being a bit of a smart ass. Did not mean to upset you. Reading back on it just now it was not a very nice thing to say to about someone or to even write, is it? Sorry Red Branch Bushcraft. I'll act better next time.
I use a pair of $6 gloves (with the camp set). Used them both on about 25-30 backpacking trips. I also use 3 or 4 tent stakes at $0.20 each for actual cooking. instead of hanging. So far my $23.00 NO MOD has been "frosty".
Take a length of thin chain with small “s” hooks at each end. Wrap one end around the pot under the handle and secure the “s” hook to the chain so that it is on one side (not under the handle or on the front side). Then take the other end of the chain and hook it on the opposite side to the chain that has been wrapped around the pot. This forms the bail and you don’t need to drill any holes. Wrapping the chain tight enough so it will not slip up off the pot ( that is why you wrap it under the handle). Try it with paracord first to get the chain length you need, then buy the chain.
Cut a couple silicone 'gaskets' for either side of your handle holes (old silicone pot holder or bakeware) and bend the wire to keep them snug. It'll clear up that 'mistake' spilling for you.
Get some nuts and bolts and a little JB weld and you can fix the holes. Or if you are into silver soldering, you can braze some stainless post where the holes are and put your handle on those….
I had a similar pot years ago, and used bailing wire wrap 3 times around the pot, with a bail over the top & tied into the second wrap of the 3. Then after folding up the ends of the top handle I soldered them closed, along with the twisted together bailing wire end!...worked great, down fall was that I forgot to file the sharp edges of the bailing wire the was cut with side cutters. I used this for 5 years when I was in the Marines, then one day it turned up missing... I wonder why!
I’m surprised that stanly didn’t put a bail on the new one. I’d love to get one of these but they’re not easy to come by and I looked one up on eBay…..€50 !
@@RedBranchBushcraft FYI, I just drilled one hole in the front of mine, since it has that attached handle. I connect a wire about the same length and hook them together where they meet above the pot. It works.

The holes would be ok, you just have to drill them 90 degrees around the pot, ie, one at the handle and the other the far side of the handle. The location of your drill holes is a problem if you want to drink out of the pot or as you say pour coffee out of it. No fix now....need a new pot.
