I just saw this. I went through he'll for a year and a half, but my doctor told me it was "all in my head". I saw a psychologist for a year and just got worse. Then a friend told me to tell my doctor to order a thyroid scan. He ordered one, "Just to prove it was a mental issue!". Well I get a call saying i had several tumors on my thyroid and there was a chance it was cancer! WTF. I had surgery, was put on Synthroid. All those " mental" issues went away and never came back. You have to stand up for yourselves!

I saw a doctor in the emergency department, he took one look at me and said I think I know what's going on, and had my blood drawn. He came back in the room and said I needed thyroid medication. I am a Psychiatric Nurse and a Thyroid cancer survivor. It took me 12 years of struggle, two miscarriages, and several doctors (even Endocrinologists) and a golf-ball size tumor before I even had a biopsy done to diagnose my tumor. I've lived this struggle and I am so pleased to see that my perspective on Hashimoto's autoimmune disease is shared. I urge you (if you haven't already) to go back in history and read some of the early studies on Thyroid disease and mental illness. There are many, many studies that show a direct correlation between multiple diagnosis of serious mental illness to Thyroid dysfunction. And of course Thyroid Dysfunction is also linked to other deficiencies such as B12 deficiency which is also implicated in Neuropsychiatric and Psychiatric illnesses. Thank you for your dedication to this work, and your movement to make physicians aware of this very important factor in Mental Illness etiology.

@Jen your comment is equally as important and as brilliant as this upload. 🎉A friend of mine had thyroid problems when young, put down to depression and placed on lithium. She is now on dialysis and in need of a kidney. They have her on a different antidepressant now. She has tardive dyskinesia that I recognise well, due to a personal reaction to an antiemetic (named metoclopramide) a couple of years ago.
This is the same anti-nausea given to me during my last two pregnancies and those two children have Tourette's Syndrome. I'm thinking antiemetics have similar effect on some people as antidepressants and nobody who's pregnant should be on drugs.
PubMed studies show antidepressants cause high possibility of autism.. I'm not sure when 'who' will feel it's a good time to reassess the benefits outweighing the side effects on that 1.
PubMed is so informative- but also feels a bit like your reading a book about Hitler's experiments at the same time.🧐
My psychologist has Hashimoto's. I spoke to her about candida Overgrowth hindering my thyroid and how impatient I had become. She has been a person in my life who has educated me greatly and when I have my next appointment with her, I am super busting to find out how her throat swab results came back, for candida Overgrowth as a trigger.
This is such a big subject and other things besides candida Overgrowth, trigger the thyroid as well.
Amazing to stumble across such a great upload with fantastic feedback in the comment section 👣🤲⚘

You are so right that the doctors are the ones who often dismiss a patient's complaints about symptoms. Many doctors do not test for the full panel, they only test for part of it and then declare that the thyroid is normal when it's not. The doctors need more training for this and must ditch their attitude that symptoms are psychosomatic, especially with women! I was also diagnosed with depression (by a college counselor who wasn't even a nurse) when it was not depression. I was accused by my boyfriend and his family of being lazy even though he should have seen that I was just too exhausted to do anything. I knew it was my thyroid because my mom had thyroid problems. The problem is that if you don't have insurance or money you can't afford to testing. Even if you are tested the doctor has to test for the full spectrum or results won't be accurate.

I didn’t sleep sometimes for weeks at a time. I would be told I did stuff that I have no recollection of at all. I thought I was crazy as did others. Quite embarrassing and scary knowing something was wrong but no clue what it was. I was finally diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and put on methimazole and I have held a job for over 5 years now with no issues. It has literally saved my life

I was diagnosed with Bipolar and was terribly sick with medication side effects. I was even sent to an outpatient hospital treatment program. No one bothered to check my thyroid levels because I was considered too thin. The 20lb jump in my weight was ignored because I was told that I could stand to put on a couple of pounds. It wasn't until maybe 3 months into being on Depakote and Lithium that someone mentioned my thyroid numbers were off and they blamed the bipolar meds. I was SO SICK from the meds that I couldn't work and I was told by my doctor that I should just apply for disability. I HAD to work so I took myself off ALL the bipolar meds and waited 3 months while my body stabilized and found a new PCP and asked them to test my thyroid. I still remember vividly that first day that the thyroid medication hit my system. It was like the heavens opened up and rained down happiness and sunshine into the world.
Suddenly all my "bipolar" symptoms were gone....and all they had to do was check my thyroid levels.

Eating processed carbs is also bad when you have high stress levels.

Berry and Eric Berg are my Dr's now~~They have explained everything about thyroid and all health related issues~~I know nurses and medical people swear by these Dr's and trust only them~~I'm 68 now and I wish I found those Dr's a long long time ago~~Still feeling horrible~~It's to late for me now~~I am not living~~I only exist~~I spent my life helping other people but couldn't help myself~~Dr. Ken D. Berry wrote a book on "What Dr;s don't tell you"~~Check him out~~You'll love him and also Dr. Eric Berg~~They will help you live longer and also to feel your best~~God Bless you and your daughter~~😄😄😄💗💗💗

The doc thought it was muscle and sent her to PT. After a few months of that she now is in pain on both sides and around her back. Touching her anywhere on her back, her sides from armpit down and around her bra line all cause her pain - just from touch! Other touch problems are even things like brushing her teeth - she recently got a Japanese tooth brush that is incredibly soft to see if that works. She gets occasional stabbing pain in random areas, like someone tapping on her hand or earlobe with a pin. She said these will last about 10 minutes. We’ve been trying to figure out how to get her more tests and they scheduled her for a CT. But I’m wondering now if it’s possibly fibromyalgia 😢

The medical system is very functional via financialization! In 2014, I knew a 28-year-old woman with one leg 3" shorter than the other. Social Services Health Care kept sending her to Physical Therapists - but not a Chiropractor, who could have gradually adjusted her hip area. After her leg went numb for 2 weeks - they sent her for an MRI, but still no Chiropractic adjustments {which is not Covered}. Surely, she's on pain pills by now and is a cripple. / I wrote letters to Social Services - all they care about is financialization, what their higher-ups say, and Standard of Care Ethics, which is often immoral!

@@stevekaylor5606 , yes, financialization works very well. When I was a child in Bulgaria you had to wait forever to see a doctor because they had fixed salaries, no matter how many patients they saw. So the doctors would take their time. When I moved to the United States, I couldn’t believe how quickly you see a doctor and how fast you are spat out. Yes, financialization is the priority, not the patient. When money talks, truth false by the wayside. Sad world we live in. Too many garbage people with garbage priorities. What I find disgusting is how these people talk about “their” time as though it is some precious resource. No, “their” lives are not valuable, let alone “their” time. I should be paid for spending “my” time with them, not the other way around. It is the opposite of what is correct. Also, Note - it is an Autoimmune Disease that causes the Hashimoto's. Your immune system is attacking your thyroid. One needs to determine how and when (the root cause) the issues started that has compromised your immune system. In my opinion I believe it is our diet and stress. In my case, it was diet and grievance.

It’s a great idea if they know what to do with a positive TPO result! Hypothyroidism for 29 years. Full blown symptoms now but the worst is my long hair is coming out, my doctor graded it a 3 on the Ludwig scale. My doctor did a full Thyroid panel and said it was negative and dismissed me. I was in disbelief and requested an ultrasound, the endocrinologist said it was normal. I read the report and looked at the images (I use to do ultrasounds), it was NOT normal. I went through my old lab work with another doctor and found a positive TPO… I wasn’t symptomatic at the time. The endocrinologist said even if I had Hashimoto’s there is nothing that I can do anyway… she has been out of residency and practicing now for 5 months! I don’t have a doctor diagnosis yet but it’s atrophic Hashimoto’s, the end stage. My thyroid is very small. I am waiting to see a rheumatologist, my orthopedist referred me. My psychiatrist supports me. The worst part is the endocrinologist at a bare minimum could be positive and recommend her patients an anti inflammatory diet… just imagine how many patients will suffer in the future due to her inexperience. Physicians use to be excellent clinicians and not rely so heavily on lab tests, these days they have lost the ability to think out of the box without them.

Though I believe the autoimmune disorder definitely exacerbates things, I do think I received an accurate diagnosis. Talking to a therapist in one-on-one didn't help me either. What did help, however, was Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). The main difference between bi-polar and BPD is that BPD is reactionary as opposed to a chemical imbalance in the brain. DBT teaches people how to relate their reactions to things. I did it in a group setting. I know that Borderline Personality Disorder gets a bad wrap, but most of the people with it are relatively normal. It's really a trauma response, usually people dealing with narcissistic abuse. As such, it's very much possible to re-train the brain, but it takes a lot of time, effort, and introspection.

I weaned myself off it carefully & slowly so as to not have withdrawal symptoms. I suffered ON synthetic medication for those 8 years. Synthetic hormone makes your thyroid quit working altogether, and so you put money in the system's pocket for life, because your body then relies on it alone. It is dangerous, but they tell you it's safe.
I was diagnosed as hypothyroid but just needed support due to a new baby & lifelong narcissistic abuse. Stress can cause the thyroid to be off temporarily (they don't tell you that) and pregnancy requires necessary temporary natural changes in thyroid production.
Because of the synthetic medication, I lost a pregnancy due to the meds (confirmed by an endo) and had trouble conceiving. I also went through a super early menopause (thankfully, reversible by quitting meds). I was extremely sick (not eating nor drinking) during that pregnancy & other pregnancies when I was on the meds, but not when I was off them. My tests were always "the right numbers" that they wanted when they tested me, as long as I was medicated the way they wanted me to be.
The endo also confirmed that pregnancies often happen when women go off of the dangerous (NOT safe) synthetic medication. That explained a lot.
I know of many people who take the meds who develop heart problems & need additional meds. There are other conditions that are also caused by taking these meds.
The only time you need them is if your thyroid is removed. Otherwise, avoid them.
Obviously, I'm not dead and almost 20 years later, do not have any additional health issues. I feel better than I ever did on those meds and I am free!

Here's something I just went through. If your tests come back and it's not thyroid related check for h pylori in your stomach. The little buggers have about the same signature as your thyroid so as your body tries to get rid of them that also ends up attacking your thyroid which causes signs of Hashimoto's and Graves.

      @@Soothsayer937 Well...
      Doctors didn't figure it out.
I came across it quite by accident. I kept track of what I ate and when I would feel the worst. Began to notice there was a correlation with the moon cycles and certain types of food, especially high sugar.
H pylori are most active before a full moon.
Read up on studies and began taking Manuka Honey in the 15+umf range with black seed oil (mixed together and swallowed by spoon. Very nasty)
The Honey was used for 6 months with the oil in the middle of that time.
Only time going to the doctor was to get a fecal test to check if the h-pylori we're still there. Test came back negative.
This is the culmination of me eliminating my depression. Could probably write an informational packet describing the process.
Very very long story short listen to your body write it down and most of all be incredibly patient with yourself and do not jump to conclusions with the first things that Google suggest to you. Read up on multiple different studies

Thank you for doing what you are doing. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 1998 at age 37 by a TSH test after having many years of mental health issues, trauma issues and being put on various drugs for them. That didn’t stop either. Levothyroxine has been a part of my life since 1998 yet I have been struggling with the same and worse symptoms for the past 6 months to 4 years, depending on the symptom and I’ve been confused by some of it because I’m showing symptoms of both hypo and hyper thyroid function. Anxiety. Sleeping 16, 18, 20 hours a day. Weight gain. Weight loss. Hungry all the time. Loss of appetite. Hair loss. And more hair loss. And emotions up and down despite being on another antidepressant. I’m all over the place. Sometimes feel up but not happy either but not depressed. Next minute or hour I could be depressed or raging or tearful and sad or numb or anxious or excited or bored which was really just not excited, irritated and headed towards anger or rage and/or depressed or sad and lonely and throughout all of this questioning myself, wondering, am I really crazy? I don’t want to be crazy but sometimes I feel like I am, so am I? Yet I really don’t believe I am. I have times of clarity yet I have a history, now it’s a long history. So I am at a great disadvantage when I try to talk to medical doctors. And sometimes psych doctors. I have a good therapist right now but that doesn’t help with the medical doctor issues I have. And half of these doctors are younger than my adult children and think they know me better than I know my self. But when they do really understand it means so much!

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease at 15 (1995) when I was hospitalized for clinical depression because I was suicidal. When admitted to the hospital they did blood work and found out that I had the autoimmune disease. My mom was diagnosed with Hashimoto's and later Lupus (SLE). After trying to control my thyroid with medicine, and being hospitalized at 17 (self harm but no longer suicidal, but not "healthy") and all my symptoms were for underactive thyroid. I was always cold. I was reserved and quiet (they said with my levels I should be bouncing off the walls hyper), and obviously I was depressed. I did have terrible insomnia, heart palpitations and had tremors as well as being exhausted all the time. I was also very shy and lonely snd felt very socially isolated. At 17 years old, they gave me radioactive iodine snd destroyed 80% of my thyroid, so since then it's always been low (especially during pregnancy). In 2020 I was diagnosed with Lupus. I also react terribly to levothyroxine. I get terrible migraines and felt super sick. So finally taking Armour thyroid and levels are within normal levels. Even at 15 ehem the doctors said there are thyroid antibodies making your body attack the thyroid. So I asked what they could do for the antibodies. Of course there was nothing they could do to treat the cause...just the symptom. So my thyroid could be burned out if not treated, so they treated it by burning it out with radioactive iodine? So here I am at 43 still on Armour (Nature throid before it was recalled).
I think more people need to know the connection between depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc and thyroid. I hope more people get help sooner than later. I've never noticed Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) but had a functional medicine doctor run tests and found I have EBV antibodies, showing not a current infection but exposure at some point. I wanted to test for EBV because so many antibodies and Lupus and autoimmune disease can tie back to EBV. The function medicine doctor put me on the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol diet (was so hard! I did this for over 4 years). I've avoided soy since 15 (and didn't have much before Grave's diagnosis). I was depressed since 13 years old before hospitalized because this condition almost cost me my life. So glad things are finally being understood!!

In 2010 I was diagnosed w 3rd stage rectal cancer. Still here, thank you to God, brilliant docs, the LOVE of my Children & ?
Several surgeries, chemo, radiation, illeostomy, take down surgery.
Within last 2 yrs I can now get into the sun w/out turning into blistering hot metal, I'm not freezing to death wrapped up in blankets in 108*, it was actually 111* but pic is at 108, at this temp my bones radiated ice, ached - bad! Many of you will understand what I'm speaking of, all kinds of different physical, mental occurences.
After several yrs of this couldn't gather my thoughts, felt coming undone, unreasonable suicidal thoughts. For yrs the docs at the clinic, in not so many word's said I was a hypochondriac & fine for my age, along w a psychiatrist, all prescribing me lexapro, cymbalta, whatever psycotic drug I might have wanted, In 2017 even saw a psycologist whom w/in the hr of 1st meeting me said she wanted to "put me on pristique, cymbalta & ween me off in 3 yrs". So far maybe a couple "basic" blood test, no blood test in prescribing me these drugs. When I flat out said "no" to these drugs, "I didn't want to adjust to the feeling & zone these drugs put me in", then the humiluation of being called a "drug addict", a "drug seeker", accused of "not wanting to help myself". I wanted to jump off! I have not been back to that clinic since!
In 2021 visited a different clinic. The PA saved me! Who would have thought, they r the doctors, but she ran a blood panel which included testing Vit D levels. 30-100 r the #'s, 30 being low, low. My # was 9, lethally low. I was prescribed 50,000 iu's of D2*, 1 weekly for 8 wks. OMG! That brought me back to better thinking, got rid of the horrible thoughts. Other than normal feelings of sadness, tiredness my life changed greatly to the better!
I've since had 2 sessions of the D2 regiment, levels were at 11, 14. Mine & orher bodies due to some illnesses does not maintain Vit D, even taking Cod Liver Oil daily (a rich source of A & D).
But the suffering some of us must endure for such a long time, w many going for the anti-depressant, never getting well, so they tack on abilify, that doesn't work so they tack on another drug.. when in reality, IT IS A MAJOR VIT D DEFIENCY!
If life could always be that simple.
Just taking vit D doesn't cut it at a point & when docs say take 10,000 iu's D3 daily, basically they r asking you to kill your kidneys!
Demand blood tests before taking all their drugs!
*D2 converts to D3 somehow.. ask your doc. Depending, bet the doc will not know straight up. Western medicine says they r implementing thus new medicine, vitamins.. MUCH to learn!
    Good health!

Hypothyroidism Hashimotos runs in my family. I noticed something was wrong with me in my teens. Things gradually got worse and 20 years later major symptoms. Got started on Levothyroxine and about 2 months later my social anxiety almost completely went away. My social anxiety was so bad before. It progressively got worse and eventually became extremely bad and noticeable. Got diagnosed with anxiety and was given medication, but it didn’t do anything. Fixing my thyroid cured my anxiety! We need more studies on this so people can get the help they need. Doctors need to be aware of the causal effect between thyroid disease and mental illnesses.
Among other things I also developed weight gain, hair loss, cold sensitivity, extreme fatigue, tiredness and over sleeping. Those all went away with thyroid medication and I feel so much better.

A lot of these symptoms, if not every one, can be addressed by eating a lower carb, higher fat diet without sugar, processed food, and vegetable/seed oils. Instead of trying to get a specific diagnosis, so you can get the right pill (or several), how about addressing every symptom in a way that doesn’t cost so much and make you beholden to an industry whose goal is to keep you on drugs the rest of your life?
Researchers are discovering that insulin resistance and the inflammation it causes leads to most, if not all, chronic disease, including skin issues, autoimmune, cancers, thyroid issues, depression, anxiety, other mental illness, M.S, diabetes type 2, alzheimers (also called diabetes type 3), fibromyalgia, RA, IBS, UC, chrohns, gout, ADHD, autism, headaches, sinus issues, etc.
I think we need to stop treating these things as separate diseases (as the pharmaceutical industry would love us to believe, so they can give us a pill for each), but to see them all as symptoms of the root cause of insulin resistance. Once that is addressed, the symptoms either get much better or go away altogether.

My gynecologist and General Doctor were prescribing me antidepressants, anti anxiety meds and Ambien which I didn’t want to take because I didn’t want to harm my baby. I even went to a cardiologist because of the heart palpitations. I was supposed to wear a heart monitor but I didn’t want to wear it because all the wires and stickers gave me even more anxiety. I was having issues not sleeping and I was like this definitely will make it even worse because I had to sleep with it on. Eventually they tested my thyroid levels and they realized I had hyperthyroidism. At one point I brought myself to the emergency room and checked in for depression. Most of my pregnancy was a nightmare. My hormone levels didn’t calm down until after my son’s birth. What should have been one of my most happiest and precious memories turned into one of the most scariest times in my life, all due to misdiagnosing from my doctors.

When one is pregnant and has already been Rxd levothyroxine, it's very important for them to get an increase in their thyroid dosage, for the fetus' s health as well.
Why didn't you ask them to reduce your dosage? Doctors usually always try to reduce levothyroxine dosages if one complains of palpitations, even if it isn't the cause.
Panic attacks, palpitations, mood changes occur in pregnancy without there being any thyroid disorder.
I've been at the dosage of 175mcg and never had those sides. It was probably a combination of dosage & hormonal changes of pregnancy., especially if one underwent IVF.
You can be adequately treated and still have depression and / or anxiety. or palpitations. Levothyroxine may not be the cause.
There are lots of abnormal chromosomal (deletions) causes for these symptoms. It's not always thyroid related or dosage related. .

@@notsogreen I didn’t know back then what I know today. The IVF clinic increased the dosage which yes it’s what they do in the first trimester. My doctor did not know that I went from normally taking 88 mg then increased it to 175. From what I understand now is they decrease the dosage after the first trimester but not all the way to the lowest (88mg). My doctor was not informed and I did not realize because no one mentioned this to me at the infertility clinic. I had my thyroid removed 2 years prior so I was still new to taking thyroid medicine. My next pregnancy I was fine because I knew what to do I went straight to an endocrinologist when I learned I was pregnant.

Thank you Dr Izabella Weltz, for your honest, eloquent theory, insights and courage to share the importance of physiological process presenting as psychological and physical imbalances ! This kind of research is so needed and still rare.
How many times I've been misdiagnosed I've lost count, all because my blood results are 'perfect'. But when you take a better look and realise that while someone else might feel fine being at 3.8 in a range of 0.2- 5.0, doesn't mean we all feel fine at that state. I go to doctors for results and do the fine-tuned puzzling myself of actually understanding what that means for me as an individual.
And sure women are affected more often and severely because we have our hormonal cycles of luteal, follicular, as well as pregnancy and breastfeeding which, makes finding hormonal and cytokinal balance all the more improbable and therefore susceptable

I was diagnosed with hashimotos at the age of 13. We suspected I had it earlier but I was living overseas and my mom wanted to wait until we were back in America before seeking testing because of the cost. I wish we had gone sooner knowing the damage that was done to my thyroid now. Regardless when I first walked into an endochronoloysts office to request testing to see if I had thyroid disease, I remember him clearly ask "why do you think you have this?" I'm not sure why a doctor has to question your decision to seek testing. There were clearly factors that lead me to him. The most obvious thing was that I had a goiter. This alone should have told him I needed to be tested.
The reason why he was hesitant was my age. But age should not be a factor in diagnosing an issue. As you said the earlier you can diagnose the problem the faster your can seek treatment and the less damage that will be done to your thyroid gland.
Only now ,15 years later am I hearing doctors on the internet talk about treating the root cause of the thyroid disease. Still to this day no doctor has questioned what caused it and what I can do to fix it. I'm scheduled for a endocrinology appointment in feb but I feel like that is too long to wait before actually trying to fix what ever the issue is because its already been 15 + years that it has gone unnoticed. I wish people had told me back then if I made some lifestyle changes or started taking certain vitamins that I could reverse my thyroid disease. I would have done anything they asked.

I should also note that I had to beg my doctor to put me on combination therapy. He had never tried it before, he didn't even know the minimum dose that you could get of T3. I'm so glad I asked for this though because I do feel more awake than I ever have before.

Mine started after childbirth at age nineteen. I had a hx of trauma too. I was finally dx in my late forties when someone finally checked my antibodies - they were off the charts! My life was made miserable by a plethora of confusing symptoms during the best years of my life. I now know that I was experiencing Thyrotoxicosis and many times what I believe now was bordering on Hashi's Encephalitis. I was told over and over that I was "fine." I spent years on SSRIs.
Functional medicine, giving up gluten and a course of Low Dose Naltrexone finally turned my life around.
I am left with temperature intolerances, weight issues and Panic Disorder but I no longer have even worse symptoms.
My advice: Don't think doctors are gonna fix you. Don't think your insurance company will pay for the tx you need.
Take your health in your own hands. Research. Find a good functional medicine practitioner. Remove toxins from your life both physical, emotional and spiritual.
Take 100% responsibility for your health.

Get rid of sugar from your diet. And I'm not referring only to the pseudo-foods people think of with added sugar, like cake, cookies, ice cream. All carbs are broken down into sugar in order to be utilized by the body. All carbs. Grains, dairy, fruit, root veggies. It's all sugar. If someone wants to get rid of any thyroid problems, just ditch the carbs. Works like a charm.

My depression was caused by undiagnosed Coeliac Disease. Maybe a test for that might find that's other people's problem too. Many people have a sensitivity to it without going on to develop full blown symptoms. Allergy is a completely different matter. Intolerance causes many problems wrongly diagnosed and given Ativan or you are judged a hypochondriac, always coming up with some general unwellness symptom.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 10 years ago. At first it started with hyperthyroidism and after a few months became hypo.
My endocrinologist said it was an auto-immune disease and that my thyroid will eventually completly disappear.
I'm on l-thyroxine since the beginning and have never seen any improvements of my symptoms. I am still very tired, sleep 10-12 hours per night, have no motivation, feel anxious, have mood issues, my skin is quite dry, etc.
For the two endocrinologists i've met, everything's fine (according to my blood tests).
Thank you very much for the work you're doing, it gave me hope and make me feel less alone ❤
