  • Has 350 Legend gotten past its growing pains? Is it the heavy hitter that Winchester promised? After months of extensive testing with nearly every factory load available on the market, I can definitively say that yes: 350 Legend is ready, willing, and able to flatten the hogs and deer in your sights.

350 Legend uses a case roughly the same size as 223 Remington to deliver a LOT more energy at close to medium distances. More than enough to take down medium game. In the face of well-established heavy hitters like 6.5 Grendel, 450 Bushmaster, or 458 SOCOM, what advantages are there to choosing the 350 Legend? First, the swap is easy. Just replace the barrel and mags. That's it. No need to use a special bolt head or buffer. Second, you get more rounds per mag. Third, the entire 9mm and 357 Magnum projectile catalog is available for you to play with. Got a favorite pill? 350 Legend can launch it at rifle speeds.
Watch the whole video to see how different ammo performs at realistic distances: ballistic gel hits at 100 and 200 yards.

I've been looking for a home defense deer hunting gun combo which for hunting performed similar to my 30-30 Winchester rifle but came in an AR-15 format and checked all the Michigan Deer hunting law boxes. Literally, this 350 legend seems like the magic bullet.

I’m willing to bet that if actually had a suppressor on that CMMG, the added back pressure would cycle the bolt just fine. Why anyone would actually choose ammo called “super suppressed” and run it without a suppressor is beyond me.
But your series about the 350 legend has been excellent. I just recently converted an older AR 15 with a Ballistic Advantage barrel and I’m super happy!

yea exactly, I was wondering why he was shooting super suppressed without a suppressor. Other than that, great video. Ive been looking at getting 350 legend since I already shoot 300blk suppressed (subs for close range and supers for hunting). The 350 legend is the most powerful round that my Wolfman suppressor can handle, and provides more energy than 300blk in both subs and supers

I shopped the Grendel vs the 350 hard, and went with the 350. As sweet around as the Grendel is, I don't need range past 200yds, and the 350 dropping like a stone after 200 is a feature not a bug for me. I don't have to worry about a 1000yd death ray streaking off into the distance if I miss a shot. The accuracy of the 350 is pretty impressive too. It looks to be quite stable for a thumper (junior) round. The Grendel can be cheaper to shoot, and for the Western boys, it would make a damned fine antelope rifle. Here in the East where we're shooting off hand more and in rolling hills, the 350 scratches the itch just fine.

The subsonic bullets are really intended for suppressed rifles. Thus, heavier to add energy and thus longer which requires higher twist rates to stabilize. See AP2020. There aren’t intended to ‘tumble’ in the flesh.
Some reloaders are reporting good results putting jacketed bullets through sizing dies. I’ve not tried, but .358 rifle bullets might size down to .356 in a Lee sizing die and work ok.
The .350 headspaces off of the case mouth. Roll crimps should NOT be used. Yes, the case length has to be maintained to spec. I intend to use the Lee Factory crimp die (lightly).
One fun thing to witness in all the gel tests was the greater penetration at lower impact velocities. This is an anticipated outcome: at lower velocity the bullet does not expand as much, the resistance is reduced so greater penetration.
    Cheers

If your a seasoned handloader, you already know why this is such a great caliber. I have loaded 147 jhp for 53 cents a round, that's using all new components (yes including bass) Once you have the brass it can drop as low as 16 cents + depending on bullet selection. (pre-virus price) For a powerhouse that'll take down bear that's simply amazing. I doubt you could find any other AR caliber that gives you that bang for your buck. I have 15 ARs in varying calibers so I got a pretty good handle on what it takes... thanks for the vid. BTW SR, you need to show the folks what a 90gr lehigh extreem defender will do. let's get real here, it's a deer round for restrictive states and the recoil sensitive but hunting bear with it is NOT advised. I bought one last year and took 2 deer with it, good hits but had to track both for some time. There's a good chance you'll end up bear scat when using one for that purpose unless you have a very well placed shot.

From reading I'm thinking IMR 4227 might be a better option since it should hit full case capacity before hitting max psi of the cartridge. I only have 200yrd ranges so I want a steel plate smacker. If have to go heavy with casts or plated I'm all ears. I have a lee 356 sizer to knock down casts, add my own gas checks or size down 357/358 sizes to keep pressures down. I like the 350 Legend. It is a very good round out to 200 yards and my is very accurate. Prior to my build I had read the 350 Legend had accuracy problems. Not So With Mine.I have a FLIR 4X Thermal on it and it's a HOG Wrecker.
I shoot Federal 140 grain primarily in it.I have not reloaded for it yet.Just ordered the dies.
This was one of the best videos I've watched in a longtime.Thank you.

If you can use a necked cartridge on deer, go for it.
If you live in a place that requires a straight walled cartridge like Ohio, I think that .350 legend is a decent choice. If you want to use an ar platform, you’re only looking at .450bushmaster, .350 legend, .50 Beowulf, .40s&w, 10mm, .45acp, or a wildcat cartridge. I wouldn’t even consider a pistol caliber ar, except 10mm, which is rare, finicky, and still not up there with .350, .450, .50. Out of those three, I would rule out .50 Beowulf, because it’s the least common, ammunition isn’t easily found. Then you’re left with two good choices. .350 legend is adequate, cheaper ammunition, cheaper build, lower recoil, and possibly less destructive of meat. .450 bushmaster is harder hitting, more recoil for sensitive shooters like kids, more expensive to build, more expensive to shoot, and some people have said that it is too destructive on deer. Two good choices for people in straight walled states. I wouldn’t hesitate to try a .350 legend on deer after seeing the ballistic gel at distance. I still haven’t decided on one yet, but it will probably be.350 legend. Then I will spend less on something that’s only going to have a few hundred rounds through it in its lifetime. I will feel better about my wife and/or daughters using it if they want to. It uses more common thread patterns, so I won’t have to buy a specific mount for my suppressor. It sounds like a win to me.

gear series of videos man!!! the only gripe I have about it is that not everyone that has access to the 350 legend will be able to guy an AR platform for it. A bolt action rifle would've been better to test the cartridge, especially when it comes to accuracy. But I don't blame you for not testing a bolt action however, considering that outside of the Midwest they seem to be hard to find.
If it came down to it though and Texas for whatever reason said only straight walls for big game, I'd gratefully get ahead of the curve and grab a Ruger or Winchester in 350 Legend.

And the 68gr XD should be exemplary in this gun. If I i was going for a gas gun, I would go for this or a 22arc. I have 223 in a bolt gun, and i prefer it there.

Thanks for all the time and energy put int to find out why a new round is called LEGEND when it is launched. My youngest brother built an AR in .350 Legend from a 20 inch Bear Creek Arsenal complete upper, a lower receiver that he found on sale and a lower receiver parts kit. Mostly because the AR is modular and can adjust to his kids as they grow, but he can also take it over to Ohio and hunt deer with it. Mostly only shot the white box 145 grainers and the Deer Season XP. The XP was much more accurate of course.
I look forward to more testing, but also wouldn't mind seeing a comparison with the AR vs a bolt action rifle like the Savage Axis, Ruger American, Winchester XPR, etc... He won't reload for it since ammo isn't too expensive and he has other rifles that he would use in more states for hunting.
I would go .350 Legend, but since he has one I guess I have to go .450 BM.

I have a tough question for ya. If you had to choose one of the following calibers in a bolt gun for an all around scout style rifle for protecting a homestead from everything from 2 legged kind to whitetail and wild boar, what would you choose. Shots would not exceed 250m. Also factoring in reloading. 5.56, 350 legend, 7.62x39, 300blk, 450 bushmaster, 6.5 grendel. Thanks for all you do and special thanks for any reply.

Fun question! Assuming we continue to have access to surplus ammo, I might be inclined to favor 7.62x39, especially if I can get into a bolt-action rifle that accepts larger magazines. Soft-point, hollow-point, and ballistic-tip 7.62x39 can be devastating. The cartridge is also more accurate that many people expect. It's really the AK-47 that's holding it back. It's cheap, too!

The whole point of these straight wall cartridges, is that they run out of steam really fast beyond 200 yards. Winchester worked closely with agencies like Iowa DNR to develop an effective deer cartridge that wouldn't carry too far in farm country. Asking a .350 to do wonders at extended range, is like asking #8 shot to be effective against Geese... not really what it was intended for.

Great video. Thank you. I bought a 350 legend upper from Bear Creek Arsenal, very good upper used the Federal 180 grain last year. I wanted the larger bullet because of the ft lbs of energy it hit with. I shot a buck at about 50 yards in the neck and it dropped him where he stood. My son shot a great lung shot on a doe at 135 yards with the same round and she only ran about 30 yards in an open field, for which I'm glad because the exit wound was tiny and left very little blood trail. I'm interested in those Winchester 150 grain Extreme Point rounds, but here's my question. Do you risk it expending all its energy at upfront with a big wound, but then not exiting, thus not having much to trail by?

    • @SocialRegressive
      @SocialRegressive  4 года назад

I expect so. The 180s punched through ALL the gel I had, and the 150s tended to stop about 18 inches in, if I recall correctly. On an actual animal with bone, you stand a good chance of having no exit wound. I might recommend the Winchester 180s. They expand reliably at any distance, and they carry enough energy for exit. The new Power Shok 160s rock, too.
Thanks for sharing your stories! It's good to hear from folks that have used the cartridge in the field.

The last hog I shot here in Texas was a stout 175lb boar right at 90 yards. I used the Winchester 150 grain XP. I hit him high right shoulder and he went straight down. I could barely see the entrance wound, no blood, but when I flipped him over there was a nickel sized exit hole. It expanded very well and dumped its energy internally and pushed right on through. So I wouldn't imagine any problem with the 150 XP "stopping short" in a deer.

@@SocialRegressive You are very welcome. I must thank you as well, as your video series on the 350 Legend and the different ammo availability, plus the possible performance we might expect in the field at realistic hunting distances helped me decide on what ammo to chose for shooting hogs. I have no doubt that the Winchester 180 grain Power Point would perform very well and plow through even the very large hogs based on your testing, and I will try them next. But I liked the bit of extra speed and the EXPLOSIVE expansion coupled with the ability to penetrate of the 150 grain XP. I believe the more popular this cartridge becomes the more ammo will be refined and optimized for a wide range of game hunting, from lighter grain varmint bullets to more companies developing the heavier better performing deer rounds like the XP. Again, thank you for a great series, hope to see more on the 359 Legend from you.

I'm no expert but I held a ruger the other day and seemed like a great quality rifle. I'm with you and doing homework. One pretty neat thing I found was after u spend about a thousand on the first rifle that u can just buy $350 uppers for about 10 different calibers barring magazines and blocks to make them fit in the mag well. So basically for another $350 you can have a 223 and it takes like 3 minutes to pull and reinsert a couple pins.
223 is most popular by far but I wanted to look at something that was more fun to run at the range cause that 223 has little kick and less impact down range. Plus I'm a 9mm fan and if u can reload u only need one bullet for both. I'm about sold but I'd like to see 30rd mags.
Edit: u can buy 30rd mags for 350 legend. Just get pangs and use a file to grind down the folowers on the sides of the mags. Tried it just for fun on a new $10 pmag and it fit 28 rounds of 350 in a 223 mag. U can find the video on yt.

You should try the Barnes 170Gr Triple Shock Hollow points.

If anyone is looking for alternative magazines the 35 round 5.56 Torkmags work flawlessly because the mags dont have the ribs in them like most 5.56 mags and are pretty durable. I load mine to 20 but its just an alternative though. I love this round so far and havent had any issues. I use the brn180 upper.

The 350 Legend is a great , new cartridge especially for first time and younger shooters but a thumper it's not. Basically it's a 357 Maximum with a 223 cartridge head and it gives up a lot after 150 yards. I bought a 350 upper and put it on my 450 Bushmaster lower, used it to teach my grandson how to shoot and took it hunting last season. Using Deer Season XP I hit a big doe at around 90 yards right behind the front leg, a nice double lung shot and had to track that doe for quite a while. With my 450 Bushmaster I've never had a deer take more than 3 steps with most just buckling their knees DRT. The 450 is a thumper, change your barrel and the bolt head which takes around a minute and go hunting with your stock mags. A 20 rounder holds 5 rounds for hunting and a 30 holds 9. Both are a reloaders dream for the reasons you stated but in my experience a 125-150 yard shot on game is about it and for hogs getting through that gristle plate will be a challenge for a clean kill. IMHO the 350 Legend is a legend invented, ok for the recoil sensitive or states with cartridge restrictions but needs a little more horsepower.

Good notes. 450 Bushmaster's energy is hard to beat. What ammo do you prefer?

@@SocialRegressive I'm a handloader and have shot Hornady Brown Box and Black. Just the same ammo but the Black uses a .005 longer case because of a screw up with the original trimming spec. I've also shot the Federal 300gr. loads for woods hunting here in Northern NY with my AR. That's about it for that platform. My handloads pretty much mirror the factory stuff for an AR. I bought a Ruger American in 450 and really stepped things up. My favorite load is big charges of Ramshot Enforcer pushing a Hornady 225gr. FTX bullet up to 2600fps. No pressure signs, cloverleafs 5 rounds at 100 and drops only 6" @ 250 yards when sighted in at 100. The bolt gun really lets you enjoy the full ability of the 450, kind of like a light bullet 45/70. Just not for the recoil shy.

thanks for getting back to me after i asked about 9mm 147 xtps in the 350 scout rifle! i'd still like to know whatever happened to the idea of 10 bucks for a box of fmj. i knew that was all winchester hyoe when they floated that price balloon to get people onboard with 350 legend. glad i stockpiled primers and powder when Hillary's campaign went bust!!

300 Ham'r wouldn't be my choice, I'd try out .45 Raptor and possibly. 475 Bishop.
I can say the .45 Raptor is much more efficient than 300 Ham'r. I have tried the bishop yet though.

    • @gsitzkowitz

@@williamster2015 The Rapter requires an AR-10 platform. I have one in 6.5 CM. It's a pig! The upper with scope weighs 7 1/2 lbs, That's the TOTAL weight of my Hamr including the scope!!!! The Hamr is a better 30-30 which was it's original design. A new bullet by Speer makes it a 300 yard gun out of a 16 1/2" barrel! That's something that neither the 30-30 or the 350 legend can accomplish.
