Leaving the barrel at a brisk 2,180 feet per second, this 160-grain load splits the difference between the 150-grain Deer Season XP and the 180-grain Super X. Instead of the ballistic tip of the former or the soft point of the latter, the Power Max features a bonded hollow point that opens up to more than a half inch across and retains most of its weight. The proof of the pudding is in the eating: from a distance of 100 yards the PMB tore a gigantic hole in the gel and finally stopped at about 26 inches. The 200-yard hit created a similarly destructive channel, but punched out the side of the second gel block. With a 100-yard group size of 2.6 inches, this is a load I can highly recommend for medium and even heavy North American game.

I did some very scientific test myself! 16 hogs shot, 16 dead with a Ruger American 350 legend 150gr deer season. Weight range from 80lbs to 200lbs. None ran more than 30 yards. Shots were 50 yards out to about 150. Good enough for me. I have no doubt the power max will be great also.

@@SocialRegressive most went down immediately. A few ran a short distance. None more than 50-60 yards. I take time to make quick clean kills which is very important to me.

The Hornady FTX has a tendency to come apart on bigger animals. I've shot smaller deer using the Leverevolution in .35 Remington and have not had issues. But, I've seen total jacket separation on the same bullet on larger animals.
I have been using the Winchester power max on deer for many years using a 308. It is by far my favorite deer round.
Ive had good results with power max in .270, great round very destructive. Id love to see you review the brand new HSM offering. Ive read the fastest round for the .350 So far

Saw a video where a guy used *PVC pipe* as an analogue for bone...had a very interesting effect on the projectiles!
I've considered trying it. I might give the Federal Power-Shoks a test with that extra obstacle.
After having to sale my beloved 336 five years ago I've found my modern 30-30 in the 350 legend paired with Savage axis 2 with the 18 inch heavy barrel. All I'll ever need.
Thanks for the video and finally! 100-200yd tests on gel and not 15ft! You get it! I would only recommend using some hide and bone plate for more realistic testing, but you are light years ahead of the rest. I was watching paper plate counts, and water bottle shoots at 10yds prior to watching your vid. SO, I got a hog hunt coming up next week and I plan to use my new Aero AR 350 Legend build for canyon busting. Got a case of these Winchester Power max on the way thanks to your vid! My new favorite short range AR cartridge. Actually... chambered in a magazine only fed knights armament LAMG. I wonder how it would cycle at 600 rpm with the constant recoil system. Probably more controlable than a 9mm para smg.

... don't see any Power Max Bonded on the store shelves any more ... good thing I stockpiled 8 boxes in 300 Win Mag when they were on sale ... not a bad BC (.400) for an economy bullet (180 grains)
I bet a 125 grain Hornady XTP in 350 legend would make a badass defensive round with a reduced overpenetration risk.
Let's hope it expands quickly. Most of the 350 Legend loads I've tested have torn through LOTS of gel.
I've been shooting the power max out of my 300 wsm for the last 11 years. I've had nothing but great experiences with them.
Just bought 2 boxes of 180 grains for my 300 wsm. What does it do for deer hunting under 200 yrds?
@@justinwhiteside6889 The main reason I switched from Winchester ballistic tips to Power max was for those shots under 100 yards. The ballistic tips would not retain weight, and really blow up on impact. That's were the power max shines. It keeps great expansion while retains great wieght.
If you measure how thick a deer is. Where I live it's probably 12-16 inches. So if a bullet causes most of it's destruction in gel at 4-10 inches, that should destroy the heart and lungs on med game like deer. This isn't a long range cartridge, but it looks like a great deer and hog hunting cartridge for most hunters. If you live in wyoming, this may not be the best cartridge for you, but for most hunters, especially east of the Miss river, it should be great. Very similar to a 3030. If most of your deer are shot at less than 100 yards, why use a 3006 or 308 or 708 or 6.5cm etc...

.350legend will def be my deer caliber for next season I built a x39 AR-15 for this past season killed my biggest buck to date with it 18.5in wide 200lb 8pt and it did amazing 6 deer killed none made it far and had some of my best blood trails ever with hollow point 123gr complete pass through on all except 1 facing towards me but it did make it all the way to the guts through the shoulder and chest it did excellent love my 16in x39 AR-15

I'm working on getting a .350 Legend in a Savage Axis II in left handed bolt with a 18.5" barrel. I am in total awe of the performance of the Legend after my two 11 year old grandsons each took big Ohio deer this year. I had been using a Henry H010 in .45-70. Deer hunters in Ohio have to use the straight walled cartridges if they are using a rifle, so, .45-70 was an easy procurement for a guy from Florida. But, it made no sense to use a cannon to hunt deer which are not that big and not that hard to kill. So, I sold the Henry (I still own a Marlin 1895 in .45-70) I prefer my .35 Remington but that would not be legal and Ohisians don't care for people from Florida killing their deer with a weapon that's not legal. (Even though I could use the .35 Remington cartridge if I were using the single shot Contender pistol. Goofy, I know. Obviously non-hunters dream up the hunting rules in Ohio.) Once again, Winchester wins the race.

Energy ballistics aside the those rounds showed terminal performance especially at 200yrds. I decided to get a 20in 350 legend from bear creek arms with a US optics scope as well. I Haven't decided to go with a collapsible or full length stock yet though. I have herd collapsible stocks have higher rates of failure and cycle issues. Have you heard of this or could you shed any light on it?
The AR was originally designed to use the longer M-16 buffer tube and spring, and sometimes you can run into issues with the shorter ones and their heavier buffers or stouter springs not being tuned well with the gas system. I don't get too excited about it, though. If you stick with standard, well-known carbine configurations you'll have no troubles. The only 350 Legend loads that don't provide enough gas are the subsonics.
I've been shooting these power Max in 243 and 308 for over 10years. they devastate whatever they hit. I wont shoot anything else for game elk and smaller
I heard some 350 Legend bullets are 0.355 and some are 0.357. Any difference in performance?
So an sbr ballistics test, Im wondering how these rounds would do in a 12 ish inch barrel as a bush gun.

Really like this round but can’t not get my hands on box to save my life lol. I have been looking at the 160gr rounds from bear creek Arsenal but I have no idea how they will perform for as expansion and penetration really hope u guys can test these out soon. Great job on all your work

@@SocialRegressive Yes me ether I just came across them while I was looking for the 160gr 350 legend ammo and saw they made one for the 350 legend what really caught my eye on there site is they make a tipped 44 mag load that’s really hot. My main reason I got the new 350 is for my dad he is 72 and was using a 44 mag carbine for deer but with today’s loads 100 yrs was a bit far for that gun as far as penetration and power goes so I got the 350 but man when u get a chance take a look at that 44 mag bullet they have. I am very very Curious of what it would do for as penetration and expansion 50 and 100 yards thanks for all your help and love the research
@@SocialRegressive My Faxon 16 inch barrel really likes the BCB 160 grain copper ammo. So much that I ended up buying 4 boxes total.. The 180 Winchester Power point and 160 Defender also shot well at 100 yards.. much to my disappointment my rifle did not shoot the 150 Deer Season very well..My buddys Ruger Bolt gun shoots them tightly so he traded his 180 PPs for my 150 Deer Seasons.

@@SocialRegressive Yes it was a good trade for both of us. I'm going to try the Bear Creek Ballistics once Rifle season starts in November.. The 180 power Points and 160 defenders will also see some action. My buddys 22 inch barrel Ruger shot the 150 Deer season and Hornady 165 FTX very nicely, He never tried the 180s. We will be giving them a go on hogs soon, and maybe a deer or two. Thanks for the awesome Ballistic Gel testing at 100 and 200 yards.

I have started to buy a 350 a dozen times. Can't find any good info on velocities from different barrel lengths. Want something as compact as possible but will have good medium game type terminal ballistics/accuracy. Most of what I found online uses 20 in barrel. Would really like to see a 20, 18,16 in velocity comparison. What is the barrel length on your rifle? Thanks for the videos!
All of my tests have been through this 16.25" barrel. Maybe I should put together a quick video that shows all the velocities I recorded.

Well this is convinced me. I keep wondering how Hornady 9mm XTP'S in 147 grain would fair in this cartridge. Then there is their critical duty and deffensive bullets with the flex tips. After I build an upper for this cartridge I may try unloading a few to reload to this cartridge, if I cant purchase them.
Solid plan. Can you buy the critical duty bullets as components? I want some.
@@SocialRegressive this I dont know yet. I did purchase several hundred .45 185grain z max from midwayusa a while back. These are the close or equivalent to critical defense bullets. I'm pretty sure they sell the z max in 9mm but I've been using a large lot of Berry's HP and Hornadys XTP'S for my 9mm loadings and really haven't checked. I use the critical defense factory loadings as a carry load in most of my handguns for EDC'S becouse they are very profeciant. This will be something I need to look into.
@@SocialRegressive this is my second reply. After checking at midwayusa one of my go to sources I did find they carry a Hornady 160 grain flex tip specifically for the 350 legend. But no z max or critical defense components. Looks like I will call them, Hornady, to investigate and ask.
They (147gr xtps) shoot well @ 100 yards and expansion is insane. Working with some gold dots currently that look very promising.
@@davidunderwood3605 tnoutdoors9 did a gel test of their z max flex tip bullets and they are just a remarketed critical defense bullet with a green plug. The critical duty 135 would work I would think since it holds together very well.

What kind of drop where are you getting from 100 to 200 yards with that round?I cited my Ruger in at 100 yards but that round how would you think it would do it 200 zeroed in at 100
25 yard zero will have you2. high t10, dead on at 150 yards, 3" low at 200..(less thinking out to 225 yards....; 16" low at300

I've only got to try out the hornady 170gr. 2 deer with perfect shots, both ran 100 yards with minimal blood.
Most of the positive comments I've received have been about the 150-grain Winchester Deer Season XP. Only one reported a messy kill that somehow ended up the gut; the others reported animals dropping dead almost instantly.

I have used the 150 grain deer season xp rounds to great effect. As well as the 180 gr powerpoints. My savage 110 won't print good groups with the heavier 180s though. It likes the hornady you mentioned and the deer season xp round from Winchester. Both shoot about 1 to 1.5moa for me.
The deer i shot this year, was at about 80 yards or so, broad side. The 150gr went in and ripped apart the lungs, but oddly enough, did not exit the off side. Eventhough it didn't get a through and through, it dropped the buck in his tracks. Zero tracking involved, he didn't get the chance to run, dropped him where he stood.

Michael, I assembled my rifle from parts.. I used a Faxon 16 inch Gunner barrel, not sure if his CMMG has same gas size? . I am using a Armaspec SRS H2 buffer and adjustable gas block. No problems with feed or ejection, bolt locks back on empty magazine. I have shot the 150 grain Deer Season, 160 defender, 160 Bear Creek Ballistic copper and 180 grain power point winchester.. all ran thru my rifle with no issues..
Are the 160 gr power max bonded the same thing winchesters 160 gr defender? The defender is also 160 gr bonded Hollow point.
I'm pretty sure it's the exact same load branded differently.

They are the same bullet, just different packaging i believe
I’ve had issues with this ammo feeding in my ar 15 the other two winchesters have fed just fine this one tho about 1 in 5 shots will jam is there any inside info as to why
Where is it jamming: in the magazine, the feed ramp, or farther forward?
kacey, I know this is a old thread and I hope you got your rifle shooting 100%. I am using Duramag 5 and 10 round magazines. when I got them I loaded them and pushed ammo out using my fingers.. The brass case was hitting front of magazine stopping the forward progress of the bullet. I already knew this could be an issue and others said they fixed their magazines by removing a little off the front of magazine.. I had to grind between 1/16 and 1/8 inch out of front of my magazines. I did not have to adjust the feed lips on the magazines. I had to do the same for a friends Ruger 350 mags. I also lightly polished the feed ramps on barrel extension before I assembled my AR15 upper. So far no feeding issues after 90 rounds of various hunting ammo. I used a carbide dremel bit to remove the stainless steel metal from mags.
About how much a round when buying them off the shelves of the gun stores for this 350 legend??
In south east Ohio, I usually see them about $1 to $1.50 per bullet. At that price, it's why I'm really considering getting a 45-70 instead. Bullet drop for both is right under 10 inches at 200 yards, price is about the same for both guns and ammo. But, the 4570 is capable of much larger game with hot loads

Texas, all I can find is the 160 grain Defender and 180 grain Power Point. The Defender box looks similar to the Power max..but Defender is loaded down a little, my 4 boxes have 2170 fps listed at muzzle..where the power max is over 2000fps at muzzle. I shot some 350 Legend Defender yesterday and they are accurate. I saw on a few web sites 350 Legend Defenders were incorrectly listed at faster speeds, that's how I ended up with 4 boxes... They will work fine for shooting wild hogs up close.

@@Chaos1187me I see I made a typo,.. The Power max was tested with a 20 inch barrel according to the Winchester web site, FPS at muzzle is listed as 2225fps.. OK, here is where it gets tricky, the 160 defender was tested with a 16 inch barrel and FPS at muzzle is 2170 fps, only 55 fps difference.

If you can get a milling or bdc reticle,I would recommend it. The bullets drop FAST.

Given the pathetic ballistics and light for caliber pills I am impressed this cartridge does as well as it does on gel.

Do you mean 357 bullets?
Not yet. I've been steering toward heavier bullets so far.
@@SocialRegressive I can't help but think you'd get good enough velocities it would expand like an HP, but first being so light, many 115 and 124 gr FMJs have a great point and BC for being a pistol bullet.
160 grain power max vs 150 grain extreme point, what's your choice? Both have pros.
I think it depends on the animal and what I want the bullet to do. The XP dumps its energy viciously, but might not leave an exit wound. Might not matter, since hunters have been reporting to me that their deer just drop dead anyway. I would expect the 160 Power Max to slam through bone and cut all the way through even heavier animals, leaving an exit wound for tracking blood. If it's whitetail you're after, I don't think you would lose with either. If you're hunting bigger game, the Power Max Bonded might be the better choice.
@@SocialRegressive thanks for your thoughts. Whitetail is the target. 350 legend is a great, fun gun for my kids to shoot. Helps them to enjoy hunting and not be concerned about the recoil! Win/win. One more question. Have you shot the Hornady 165 flex tip? If so, how did it do?
150gr deer season. Dropped a buck in his tracks this year, and it was like a grenade went off internally. Didn't get an exit wound, but didn't need it, deer dropped dead

Is the 350 legend good for black bear
Winchester advertises it for black bear, and after seeing its performance, I believe it would perform well. Keep your distances close, and make sure you use one of the heavier or bonded loads like the 180 Super X or the 160 Bonded.
With this amount of penetration at 200 yards would it be fair to say the .350 Legend would make a decent elk and even moose rifle?
Winchester implies that it will work on all North American game, and after viewing these results I'm inclined to agree. As long as I'm within a hundred yards or so, anyway.
@The Social Regressive Thank you for your attention and reply. I enjoy your field tests of the .350 Legend. I like the medium bore .35's in all loadings: .35 Rem, .350 RemMag, the fiirt short action Magnum, .35 Whelen, .358 Win, .358 Norma mag. and now the new Legend. I would like to see the .35 Winchester make a reappearance, too. It was a nice ballistic loading on par with the .358 Win or even a little stouter. Thanks, again.
I don't like all these bullets breaking up into little pieces of lead in the meat especially in game. There needs to be more solid copper offerings. These would certainly get the job done though.
I tested Lehigh extreme defender bullets in a recent video. They worked well and left no trail of debris.
