    If you're looking for a distance-insensitive 350 Legend round, use either this 170-grain Hornady American Whitetail or the 180-grain Winchester Super X Power Point. Both provide a very similar wound channel at 100 and 200 yards, and both keep enough momentum and sectional density to pass through a whole lot of animal. If you have a choice at the store, I would recommend the Winchester load, however. It groups considerably tighter in this AR carbine and expands to a larger diameter.

    Thank you for the video. I think a lot of people seem to not understand that a gel test is only consistent way to test a bullet in GEL, NOT how it will perform in the field. The Winchester 180 PP, Federal 180 and this Hornady 170 will perform differently hitting gel as opposed to punching through a tough hog shield and bone. These aren't "defensive" rounds, they are made for killing game. If the three bullets I mentioned and you tested will deliver energy and expand fairly well in gel they will certainly expand better in a tough animal like a hog or even a deer.

    That ammo has had problems with the bullet moving forward when chambered in an AR making the COL different with each shot...like it's not crimped well enough...that might be why you're getting a large group... I get sub moa with this ammo from a single shot and when I crimp it more with a Lee FCD if I'm shooting from an AR

      @@SocialRegressive Not with the 170 gain. I do a light crimp with a Lee FCD because from the factory, they don't seem to be crimped at all with is allowing the bullet slip or it could be the brass is too soft and doesn't have enough neck tension to begin with IDk, I load these bullets with Starline and they're fine...the 165 FTX ammo is hot and I had flat primers or it's shoving the bullet further inside the case. I know they shot 6" higher than the 170 and you could feel a noticable difference in recoil. Hornady also crimped the primer pockets on the 165... I had to hammer them out by hand.. I won't shoot either of the factory Hornady ammo in my ARs

      Kelly Gallagher thanks for the heads-up about slippage with this round in an AR. I guess I'll avoid the Hornady stuff. Is there anything someone who doesn't have reloading equipment can do to crimp these bullets somehow? Informative video. I like Hornady projectiles and ammunition alot. I beleave those groups would tighten up considerably once you handload and tune those projectiles to your rifle, as you know not all factory loadings are every rifle great.
    I haven't looked at their site to see if they offering them at component level yet, but if not I'm sure they will soon and probly some others not yet developed when popularity grows. And as it goes probly other manufactures too. The Winchester rounds you used in a previous video have a projectile profile that looks alot like some vintage 38 special rounds I have on hand that are copper jacketed with an exposed lead base that stays exposed part way up from the base. Unfortunately I have no unused projectiles to send you for trying.

      Man I gotta say that expansion is pretty underwhelming. I've been surprised at the the results when using this cartridge in the field. At this point it seems like there are so many other hunting loads out there that perform a little better than this. Backstory- I've shot doe and hogs with the 6.5 creed American Whitetail cartridge with very mixed results. It's relatively accurate but the terminal performance has been inconsistent in my limited experience. I neck shot one hog and it didn't do the trick and had to brain it with a 9mm. Base of neck shot on a doe did the same...had to walk up and cut its throat. Another pig it dropped with a neck shot.
      It's an ok round for hunting but the mixed results has me thinking I'll try something else. Thanks for the informative video.

      @@SocialRegressive I have a Faxon barrel on an AR upper. It would feed all the Winchester, but choked about one in three or four Hornady 165 ftx or 170gr softpoints. I think the feed ramps are too steep and probably need some polishing (which will wait until deer season is over).
      I tested all the mags (Duramax, ARstoner, CMMG), same issue. They are all identical (I read somewhere even made by the same company and rebranded).
      I cut about 1/4" off the feed lips of the magazine, it fixed the problem. Lets the cartridge raise and release earlier. I saw a yt video about polishing the chamber too. I am a little leery of that since it could cause headpace issues.
      btw CMMG says they have "proprietary" feed ramp angle - so maybe they figured this out before everyone else.
      One other thing I would note is that since I fixed the feed issue accuracy went up dramatically. I think improper feeding pushes or torques the bullet, creating inconsistent / crooked presentation to the rifling. Even if it feeds in the chamber, if its ramming against the feed ramp it could be jamming the bullet. 350 Legend seating in the brass seems... fragile lol.. Before, accuracy with the Hornady 165 ftx and Winchester 160 was dogshit, now its about 1.3-1.5 MOA in my upper. Hornady 170 sp printed the best for me so I went with that. Not presicion but good enough for deer out to 200yds.

  • @WilReid
    @WilReid 4 года назад

    How is less than 7% expansion "excellent" when another round (150gr Deer Season) achieves 80% expansion? Seems like anything above 160gr is either moving too slowly or bad bullet design, and they all fail to expand properly and cause an ice pick instead. I have SS109 for that.
    Now I'm wondering if it's just the velocity differences or mainly construction causing that failure. Been watching these while considering a 12" 350 upper for an AR pistol. If the bullets still expand, seems like it would be the perfect balance for a youth deer gun.

    Have you experienced FTF w/ the CMMG ar?

      Great question. I have only seen failures-to-feed when trying to run handloads that had bullets that were too flat on the nose. Or when running the subsonics (too little energy to fully send the BCG home).

    Expansion on this is pretty poor. It's not going fast enough. American Whitetail in other calibers mushrooms like crazy from other tests i've seen.

    Would this ammo good for white tail deer

    • @SocialRegressive
      @SocialRegressive  4 года назад +1

      Yes. It will cause havok and likely exit, leaving a solid blood trail if your animal doesn't just drop from all the aforementioned havok.

      @@SocialRegressive a couple of the hornady rounds seemed hotter. Then the last one broke a lug off the bolt and marred the barrel extension. No bolt goes in it now. Winchester and federal did not bulge, get stuck in the chamber and blow gas around the primers like hornady. Hornady said oh not a factory gun, hobby gun, no ammo to send back so too bad.

      The problematic expansion is due to the bullet jacket being too stout. The lighter pistol bullets jackets are thiner thus over expand and tend to separate. 350 Legend velocity is far greater than a .357 magnum with any bullet loading, yet they expand very well.....hense my point.
