Lewis Structure of CsCl, caesium chloride

  • Cesium is a metal with ONE electron in its outer shell. It wants to lose this electron to become stable.
    Chlorine is a non-metal from Group 17, so it brings SEVEN electrons in its outer shell. It wants to gain one electron to have a full octet (eight electrons) in its outer shell.
    So, only one cesium atom is needed to donate its electron to one chlorine, and both atoms become stable.
    The result is CsCl, cesium chloride, and in this video I draw the Lewis Structure of this ionic compound.

    I have only just discovered your very useful videos. It is more than 50 years ago that I did Chemistry at school, but with frequent lockdowns and pupils struggling online, friends have been asking me to help their children and grandchildren, because I at least did some Chemistry all that time ago. I am enjoying your videos so much, I almost feel confident to tackle some of the more advanced Chemistry, like your University levels. its all fun and interesting. Thank you.
