- An aluminum atom (a metal) has three electrons in its valence (outer) shell to give away.
Fluorine atoms (non-metals) have seven electrons in their outer shells, so they require just one more electrons each to have a stable octet.
This mean that ONE aluminum can give its electrons away to THREE fluorines, to create a stable ionic unit called aluminum fluoride.
Its formula is AlF3 and it has one Al(+3) ion with three F(-1) ions.
