In the 80s, my mother told me her everyday look was a thick, purple winged liner with a peach color in the crease, electric blue mascara, a really bronzy blush, sometimes she would draw in a beauty mark, and a frosty peach lipstick with hot pink gloss in the center. She also mixed her foundation with moisturizer.

I swear, in the early 2000's, I used to go to the bakery every Saturday. The head baker was almost always at the counter on Saturdays, and she looked EXACTLY like this. The hair, clothes, makeup, and all. She was in her 40's and she usually had blue and pink eyeshadow EVERYWHERE. She was 80's incarnate, despite what people said about her look, or the rapidly evolving fashion industry. She's pretty much what inspired me to be more individual in my makeup looks.

This was good, but being an old eighties girl myself one critique. You chose the Madonna look, which wasn't popular among everyday looks. Lighter eye shadow with dark blue or black eyeliner was however. Enjoyed it though!

Speaking as someone who was a teenager in the 80s, some of this you got right, and some of it eh... In the 80s, eyeshadow trios became extremely popular. You'd put the medium color on your lid, the darkest on your crease, and the lightest all the way up to your brow bone. That was the most common application. We still do similar to that now, but back then we didn't really blend. Also, blush usually came as a duo. The lighter color was on your cheekbones, with the darker color underneath in the hollow - sort of like contouring is done now. And it was very angular, as you said... Blue eyeliner became popular because the thought was it made the whites of your eyes look whiter, and therefore your eyes brighter. Eyeliner was both worn under the eye and on the lower waterline. Most girls did not line the top lid. And if you wore blue liner, it was almost always with blue mascara. :-)

Primers? Matte makeup? Foundations that resemble skin? Lip glasses? Pore minimizers? Quality sponges & brushes? Kiss proof lipstick? Airbrushed makeup? Serums? Hairspray that doesn't give you helmet hair? Nail polish that isn't super thick? Uh, like no way! Our makeup quality was abhorrent-chalky-greasy-cakey-pore-clogging crap! But we rocked it the best ways we could. Thank God for cool music, John Hughes, the Cosby Show & valley girl lingo to help get us through. Thanks so much for the flashback... • @RobinFinnell

OK, as a teen that lived in HS through the 80s let me offer my historical perspective. I graduated in June of 87.
While we looked at all the fashion magazines with the circus colors on the eyes, most of us knew that we couldn't accomplish that ridiculous artistry with the little triangular sponges that came in the drugstore brands of Cover Girl eyeshadow. Yes, we tried on occasion, but most of us ended up with the neutrals and the "raccoon rings" of eyeliner around the eyes. You nailed the "non blend" of that circus-frosty colored look, but most of us just followed the instructions on our Maybelline eyeshadow inserts. ;)
Also , there was no eye primer at Walgreens, we simply put liquid foundation on our whole face, including our eyelids.
The 80s were very different in the early years as opposed to 1989. Your "off the shoulder" sweater style, hair and makeup was definitely 1985-86, my junior year.
My signature makeup look was wearing gold frost lipstick to de-accentuate my very thin lips and a brown or purple eyeshadow pallette to make my green eyes pop. It's very similar to what I wear today, but in a different, less sophisticated way.

Ah, the 80s; such a relaxed time when we didn't give a care about what society thought about us.

There were multiple social crowds during the 80's and she did the makeup for most women who were in the "pop" crowd, hence the "Madonna" bow in her hair, etc. I was in the Headbanger/ Metal crowd and they still had the big hair but their makeup was a little more conservative (Less eyeshadow, more eyeliner) and not borderline circus.
Great video and spot on for the women who were in the pop social circle.

It has everything from skin care, to eyeshadow, to how to apply blush according to your face shape. I know the bright neon colors are more fun to do but I wish someone would do a tutorial based on the more average everyday looks of that time. ***** Yes, this look is more like the "glam rock" look of the late 80's (or to some extent the punk look that some were still wearing in the early 80's, albeit a very small group of people). I graduated in '88 and the average person was not wearing makeup like this for the majority of the '80s. Granted, the hair was big through most of the decade. Shadow colors especially though were much more natural. Everybody did black liner, not colored. The colored mascaras were much more popular than brightly colored shadows. The blush placement in the video is about right, but again much more natural colors were used. The lipstick color is pretty similar to like what my Mom wore back then, but teens and young adults were again wearing more natural hues or just barely pink lip gloss. Also, I remember people tanning themselves like crazy in the 80's and wearing *darker* foundations, not lighter. By the time the early to mid 90's were rolling around, people were saying we would never see anything but natural eye shadow colors ever again. The cliche blue and white frost shadow duos were long gone by then.

Hot pink and electric blues YES! IT was everything. They had clear mascara and a Maybelline 3 in one makeup stick I used for concealer, contouring my cheek, then a darker blush just under the cheek bone and light on the nose. LOL I must of worn electric blue on the outer lid and pink on the inner and a powder pink brow bone with blue eyeliner forever!! My sister and mother hated it but I loved it. LOL

Just turned 49. I've been watching brow videos it total fear... But honestly, I was a "Metal Kid" (Motley Crue, Ozzy, Dio with a little bit of Prince & Madonna thrown in), so I really didn't wear my make-up like this tutorial. I think what I wore was closer to the 90's grunge look video. Lots of black eyeliner (Red Maybelline pencils in black we used to melt with a lighter for darker application) applied around the and to the top and bottom waterlines & black mascara. Also, one thing this video misses, is that all we had were the crappy sponge tip applicators that came with the eye-shadows. There were no "make up brushes". It was your fingers for concealer/foundation, the tiny blush brushes that came with the blushes & the "puffs" that came in the powder compacts. And you never washed them - no one knew you were supposed to until someone got an eye infection. Anyway, nostalgia....

Ha! I used to think back to the 80s (when I grew up) as an embarrassing decade. We wore all things ridiculous, make up, hair and clothing. The higher the hair, the better, and rat, rat, rat it. Looking back the 80s was a great decade -- serious dancing and music, giant hair and more makeup than any human should ever wear. Most people didn't wear quite that much pink eye shadow unless they were famous or bold, but bright pink lipstick and blush, yes. Blue eye shadow was just as huge as pink. Most of us put on makeup like Madonna/Brook Shields rather than Cindy Lauper. Great tutorial, however. When you dress, throw on some parachute pants, paisley, bermuda shorts, penny loafers, peg your pants, wear floods, spiral perms...Clinique makeup reigned supreme in the 80s as well. So many fun things in the 80s.

Well, you know there were a lot of different styles in the ‘80’s.
I, for instance, used very pale foundation and rice powder from Chinatown, black eyeliner and mascara and with smokey blue or purple eyeshadow. Absolutely No Blush, and a nice matte lipstick from Coty that was kind of a dusty rose reddish mauve color. As for hair, I used Aquanet hairspray to absolutely glue my hair down (not up) Also, my hair was dyed blue black. Cellophane hair color was popular, it was an amazing hair color that changed with the light. This was Los Angeles in the 1980’s. I can’t speak for Kansas or New Jersey...

You use spray in hair color and spray glitter! It was a glittering era! Big curly hair tied back with lace ribbon, funky earrings, bangle bracelets and black skinny heel pumps worn with lace top anklets! Your boyfriends jean jacket and pencil skirt. It was the era of sexy rebel girls. Loved all the positives back then.

The eye color of the era was PURPLE in every shade you could find. Frosty browbone highlighter, colored mascara, and strong blush, too. You nailed the hair, back then I'd have killed for hair like yours! Don't forget a BIG pair of earrings, no dainty stuff!

You don't know how happy it makes me to see you use the same colour as the eyes as you did on your cheeks. A lot of 80's tutorials don't do that so it made me super happy to see you do this! :D

From what I remember of the 90's: grunge - smudgey, glossy black eye and super pale skin, plucked eyebrows, Clinique Black Honey lips, Chanel Vamp nails, PX Voodoo stick blush. Or the Bobbi Brown/Ultima II nudes (ala Kevyn Aucoin), very contoured face, precise matte nude eyeshadows, brown lipstick, strong Cindy Crawford brows, sheer, invisible foundation.

Not only did I go through my teen years in the 80's. But I grew up in New Jersey, BIG HAIR with lots of hairspray was the name of the game. Remember some girls would put concealer all over their lips. That I didn't do, could never understand that one.

This is such a great tutorial. Awesome job! The 80s were really bold and out there with different arrays of bright and fun colors like pink, purple, teal and blue. I've always liked how you do extensive research and gather as much information as you can to achieve the authenticity of the decades and create looks that were as close to the makeup worn in these decades as possible. It would be so stellar if you could do the 1950s, 1970s, and (my FAVORITE decade) the 1990s!

when I was a kid in the 90s, from my Barbie dolls to cartoons and other daytime shows (like 21 Jumpstreet), I thought that THIS was the way to do makeup and assumed that when I grew up women would still do their makeup this way, not realizing that fashion changes. So, you can say I was a little disappointed, but glad I'm in my 20s and can do whatever I want with my face still! Love this tutorial! You did a GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How entertaining are you :D !!!!!!!!!!! During the 80's when I was in college, I would always wear purple mascara by Lancome, electric blue eyeliner by Maybelline and bronzy/purple eye shadow by Aziza! The winey/pink frosty lipstick was from Max Factor the foundation was Cover Girl mixed with moisturizer. Blush of course had to be fierce and on the hollow of the cheekbones! I always would choose a wine color! Elizabeth Arden has a silky pressed powder that was fab for setting the look without a matte finish. My hair was always a natural dark brown with burgundy tones to make the color look real rich and deep....I would use henna mixed with beet juice and coffee! Naturally wavy hair, styled big and high with hair gel and mousse! There was also colored hair mousse to add pizzazz to the hair and a variety of color! I would opt for the auburn/orange! The big earrings were a must! of course my bushy eyebrows were perfect and I never tweezed them...just combed them into place! :) The cowboy look was in during the fall season with super looking mules and corduroy pants....the hair was big and curly as well as the need for super frosty, rich lips! The rubber black bangles were a hit due to Madonna, the black wayfer sunglasses were a must due to the Blues Brothers, the headbands and of course the t-shirts with political messages were so IN...Check out the WHAM video "wake me up before you go go" ! ! For the nails... decals were in! I would choose decals to suit my mood! Hot pink and hot orange were the top colors for nails! Bright turquoise was great for clothing ! For the hair I used Vidal Sasson hair gel, aqua net hairspray, Tenax hair gel and RESQUE hair setting lotion and I also had a curly perm , even though I had naturally wavy hair! Fragrance of the times were Chole, White Linen, Beautiful, Giorgio of Beverly Hills, Paris, Nikita St. Phalle, Paloma Picasso, Poison, Halston, Ciara, and Obsession! As for music...well make sure you have Duran Duran on your playlist as well as Culture Club, Bryan Adams, Tina Turner, A-Ha, Human League, Depeche Mode., Phil Collins, Bon Jovi, Wham, Tina Marie, GoGo's, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Prince, Madonna, Queen, B-52's, John Cougar Mellancamp, Devo ,David Bowie, Stevie Nicks and of course LOTS and LOTS of MTV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my!!!!!! my favorite DECADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your video was so much fun to watch! :D

MissMNM64 Wow, great description of '80's style!! I loved the 80's, too!! I was in high school during the 70's, and I was never so glad to see an era end in my life! I wore purple eyeshadow, pale foundation with a Wine With Everything stripe down my cheeks, deep wine color lipstick, a short, Olivia Newton John mullet cut with a headband. I usually wore cut up sweatshirts with a bandana around my neck, pinstriped baggy jeans, white ankle socks with black high heels! I loved White Shoulders perfume, Foxfire cologne by Avon (I still like this and wish they hadn't discontinued it!). I loved New Wave music and some punk, too!! What a fun, fun time in fashion in life and life! Thanks for your excellent tutorials!! God bless!!😃
