I was a teenager in the 90s . I did wear my foundation 1 shade lighter , no blush , brows plucked thin , smudged eyeliner . Usually I wore no lipstick , but many other girls I knew wore matte finish burgundy , browns , reds. Towards the large 1990s we wore body glitter , body and face jewels , more glittery eyes and lips . But the foundation always a shade lighter .
DJUrsamynor yes. Spot on
Lol i pretty much just said the same thing before reading this, except for the lighter foundation. Me and my friends didnt do that but the rest u said was spot on, lol even the glitter in the later 90s, it could get heavy on clubbing nights!
I wore my foundation a few shades too dark. But for as long as I live there’s always something about fashion/make-up that I don’t get. And I see the mistakes 10 years later when someone shows me an old picture. At this time I don’t dare to shape my face. I’m scared as hell that I’m doing it wrong and will find out 10 years later. 🙈🙈
Yeah, the dark or brown lipstick was a must. That whole look--smudged dark-lined "big sad eyes", paler foundation, and earthy lips transitioned nicely into the whole late 90's retro/swing look with lots of dark red, matte lipstick, pale foundation and girls learning how to do a liquid eyeliner wing again.
Same...i had thin brows, red lips and pale foundation
she looks like avrilavine in her sk8ter boy video
I was just going to say the same thing!
😂😂😮😮 yeah
I thought I was the only one lol
Yes
I'm 42 in a week and I lived the grunge and goth era in my early 20's. I bought stock in dark reds and blue lipsticks. I still have my combat boots and refuse to throw them out. No, I don't wear them lol But the best times of my life.
Aggghhh! Combat boots! Haha! Loved them!
I miss my flannel shirts the most!
I knew you looked familiar- I am 31 so c. 1993 I would have been the ripe old age of eleven. Too young for the combat boots, tried to wear the really smoked out eyes look (got laughed at by those ten years my senior, my face washed off by the tag team of Mom and Grandma who frog marched me to the principal where I had a lengthy discussion about drug use (mind you the strongest thing I was on was Swedish Fish chased down with Pixi Stix, so nobody heard my pleas to be left alone.) By the time I actually hit 16 in 1998 I realized I could bench press Kate Moss
still have my combat boots (Docs), my flannels. same hair lol! I have up the dark brown lipstick.
Hi,
Me again, two years later: 33 years old now and the story still stands-tis all true. I am not doing this for any other reason than to point out posters here with nostalgia were lucky. Forgot to mention this last time, but the worst part was a few months later (I was a Catholic schoolgirl) when I stole my older sister's Nine Inch Nails CD: thankfully Grandma was not in town and had never heard of the band. She was more into WWII era swing music. But the teacher was not happy. She said we could bring in music to listen to in class. She made me play the whole song through, and I got sent back to the nun's office again for "I want to f*ck you like an animal."
I was/am too little to be a member of Generation X, so for me the 90s was a whole other experience. I wore the Doc Martens right on through to 2004, but because I thought they were comfy. I was later banned from watching Chasing Amy and half of the things Kevin Smith ever made (Mom and Dad had already gone through enough with my makeup and the Nine Inch Nails fiasco) and most of Reality Bites went over my head since I was too busy staring at Ethan Hawke the whole time thinking he needed a bath. Didn't hear any of the dialogue, didn't understand it. Wasn't out of grade school and my Mom shopped for me at the Gap. Only got to see Ben Stiller in Heavyweights until I turned 17. Just stared laser-like at a man who voluntarily lived in his own bog of eternal stench. I thought the alcohol maybe was his only defense, a form of disinfectant.
I wasn't born until '95, but my mom was a grungy teenager in the early 90's, and from the pictures I've seen, her makeup looked A LOT like this. She also wore a lot of flannels, shorts with long johns/tights/fishnets, Doc Martens, and dyed her hair with koolaid
skyler1586 Ahhhhh the good ol' days .. miss the koolaid hair dye too! ;D
I love Doc Martens.
Yes! Layer layer layer. All of our clothes were several layers. But living in the Seattle area, that's still appropriate since our weather is bipolar. Long Johns are still a staple and young guys loved it if they were the skinny type because it made them look bigger.
Sky-chan I dyed my hair with koolaid so many times, I was born in 83 so I grew up in the 90's and early 2000's lol
God how I miss the '90s.
Omg thank you for not referring to Kylie Jenner for a 90s look! I first person that comes to my mind for 90s is Drew Barrymore. You nailed this by the way!
Just think, one day someone in the future will recreate our makeup.. It'll be instabrows, Kim k contour and kylie Jenners lips
Molly O'Hara Horrific.
Molly O'Hara well u were right😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Everybody Loves D. Sunshine that's what people probably said about every other decade. Especially the grunge look- everybody hated it except the people that wore it.
Hi from the future. You predicted it
Yikes.. sounds like hell
I was 18-20 during this time. I lived in Seattle and my hometown of Portland, OR. Grunge is ingrained into me. People get this so wrong. Part of grunge was minimalistic. Natural was preferred, we were children of hippies. I wore mascara and dark brown/red lipstick that was it. Not the Hollywood version of Grunge. I had my hair long, straight, and parted down the middle. We wore ripped jeans, bodysuits, and I wore my favorite vintage corduroy jacket. Vintage, or baby doll dresses as well. Sure we wore flannels but that wasn't all there was. I think cigarettes, pale ale, and Guiness Stout describes grunge more than flannels. No true grunge girl wore a face full of makeup, that went against everything Grunge stood for which was anti excess, anti money, anti status quo and anti anything 80's.
I forgot about the babydoll dresses. With Docs. I loved those dresses. So comfy. And that's what I remember about the makeup and hair. Once my mommy stopped paying for my haircuts my hair ended up half way down my back cuz I was a broke college student. My hair parts on the side though. And makeup consisted of an appropriate shade of red lipstick. At least with my coloring, pale/super dark hair and eyes. I seem to remember a lot of brick red lipstick. L'Oreal. I struggle to this day because it seems like every day the infamous "they" come up with new tortuous grooming things. It was nice when just not being stinky was pretty much good.
Exactly. No one woke up and used fancy face creams or eyelid base. We put on eyeliner, lip liner and gloss.
Finally! An accurate grunge tutorial. So sick of seeing smoky pink lips as a "grunge look".
I graduated in 1993. I wore deep dark kind of black cherry colored lipstick. But everything else you did is almost exactly how I wore my makeup. You should have worn a flannel shirt!!
Early
2000's please!!!
Yes! I second that!
Agreed!
CupsAreUseful yes I was totally thinking early 2000's and One tree hill came to mind lol I loved brookes look on there it seemed really easy to recreate (sophia bush is just gorg) I know for sure gloss was in. :)
Yasss, I remember in the early 2000s my two sisters saw both sides of the makeup, one was an emo and the other was into the frosty and glossed look. I still remember them fighting over the mirror in our bathroom when they got ready for school...
Yes
I made a comment on your 90's tutorial but YES on that pale PALE skin for grunge! I was very much a grunge girl and the foundation I wore was porcelain.....it took me a long time into the 2000's before I realized that I was NOT that fair LOL And even now I tend to buy my foundations too light, it's like no way I can't be a medium haha! I so loved the heroin-chic look without the heroin LOL My flannel shirts and Doc Martens......oh how I miss them so!!
can so relate re: foundation too light lol
I had the opposite problem. I always somehow managed to get foundations a shade darker or too yellow for me, mostly because I tan on my body, but not on my head. So when I was trying to test it out, I was foolishly matching it to the back of my hand. And then I had no idea about blending. No one told me anything.
I'm a 90's child and I really do miss that era of music and make up! I still listen to 90's music religiously so I loved this ! Xx
I was born in 1980 so I was a teen in the 90's and during that time I would never be without my foundation compact, you know the green marble one with Noxema in the formula. Other than that, I would pile on thick dark black mascara and then sleep in it, the next day I would have black eyes. Add the foundation in the palest color and yep, that was me. lol
Same. Also thick liner on the bottom lid.
YES Cover Girl Clean Makeup!
I thought I was the only one who did this. Sleeping with mascara on to get black eyes. And I felt so pretty rocking the racoon look 🙈
I was born in 1980 too! I loved being a teen in the 90's..especially the early 90's! I was all about the flannels and my doc martens.
I hope I'm not the only one but I WANT THE 90s GRUNGE BACK PLEASE
I so wish I would be older.. I mean, a teen in the 90s but heck I just missed that time by a year it sucks
Melina Pektas it is starting to come back! I saw some docs at the shoe carnival in Chicago. But maybe that's just Chicago haha
Based on your findings in previous tutorials of period makeup, can you make a tutorial that will show us where makeup is headed in 2020 or 2030?
That is interesting...I like and second this!
great idea
***** Request! Can you do this? Yes this is such a great idea PLEASE DO THIS!!!
Perry Cross it'll be kim kardashians makeup routine x10, lots of contouring and highlighting to completely change your facial features and shape, scary stuff!
xz claire Don't forget the newly introduced trend for lips, the "Kylie Jenner lips".
I miss the 90's!!! Oh my grunge days, thought I was so cool. Looking back at pictures I look like I'm wearing a white mask with how light I kept my foundation! Wore makeup just like this with babydoll dresses and doc martins, lol. Thanks for the fun video!!
***** Haha! YES! I freaking LOVED The Craft! I watched that over and over and over! Thanks for confirming the brows, that's what I thought! Flannel was big in the 90s, too! Did you see they're trying to bring back overalls now? LOL! ;)
I was in college during these so I may not remember things too clearly but great tutorial! Yes- thin brows, pale face, and brownish raisin lips. My fav was revlon raisin rage. Thx for your review!
You should do an early 2000's look!
Hannah Miyeko lord...orange foundation. That's all you need to know about the 2000s
Nastassia Mmm, I don't know 'bout that! I came of age in the 70's and the makeup was almost non-existant, ugly, in fact! I would far rather rock the grunge look than the natural any day!!
Super tan. French tip nails. Sperm brows. And frosty pink/concealer lips.
Hey!!! Just looking at your old videos.... can you please do a 90s makeup look updated 😂❤❤❤love your channel!!!
Watching all these videos really shows how many different ways there is to do makeup! It's so fascinating.
I would love to see a 90s supermodel "natural" look (lip liner, burgundy lips, brown smokey eyeshadow) or a late 90s/ early 2000s look (pastel, glittery eyeshadows and minimal eyeliner).
This is so nostalgic! I was born in 1990, and I remember my mom and my aunts, and my adult female cousins wearing their makeup like this. Especially my teenage/adult cousins. The eyeliner was always smudged, and eyeshadow too.
Seriously brought me back! I always did a matte red/burgundy lip, always! And, yes, our eyebrows suffered greatly as the trend was definitely plucked until you looked like you were in a constant state of surprise!
My mom did the same thing. She just has little lines as eyebrows now.
Alex Smith
40 year old here....I have nothing but teeny tiny eyebrows left myself. It's like they ran away because they got tired of being plucked constantly during binge drinking sessions!!
(I miss having actual eyebrows)
My eyebrows never grew back 🤦♀️
I wore flannels, SHORT cut-off shorts, torn up jeans, chokers, and Birkenstocks (before they became heavily associated with the lesbian community). I used to cut bodysuits into midriff crop-tops. My fave lipsticks were Revlon's Coffee Bean (very frosty brown), Toast of New York (slight creamy red - very Cindy Crawford), and Avon's Raspberry Ice. My hair was always straight and parted down the middle. For my 32nd birthday a couple years ago, I had a 90s-themed party. Overalls, Babydoll dresses, beanies, and boots galore! STP, Candlebox, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Ugly Kid Joe, and Dr. Dre alllll niiight long! Grand times!
That sounds so fun!
The eyes are perfect, I remember doing that to my eyes all the time, brown for day time black for night. Matte brown lips were everywhere too, but I don't remember any nude lips at all. That could just be me though, my best friend wore dark brown matte lips, but I loved Revlon Vixen a deep deep cool red burgundy color. I had a guy ask me why I was wearing black lipstick, the lights were low and he said it looked black, that's how dark lip colors were. Great video!
Agreed, I was in high school during the 90s, and we all wore black or deep dried-blood-red lipsticks. No bright reds or nude lips for us! ha ha
You remind me a lot of Shirley Manson
I was hoping for her to mention her as one of the icons for that look
Best bond theme song singer
man, I wish I was older. when grunge was in style, I was in diapers
You remind me of lily from Princess Diaries
Kathleen Rose yassssssss sooo true
no, zabrena is actually pretty.
So awesome. You're one of the few makeup artists I've seen really do her homework!
I LOVE that you do accurate 90’s hair with the look too!! You nail it 100%
If history had been this fun haha love these historical facts :)
I really love this, not a lot of gurus would do a historically accurate grundge look! These videos are really unique and cool! Keep it up :)
I am loving all of your throw back make up videos! Thanks for all the time and effort you put into them. They are wonderful!
thank you so much for this! all the other make up tutorials i’ve seen were way too complex and just didn’t work at all with my skin colour (i’m brown). the crease shade was my skin colour so i had to use darker eyeshadow colours, but in the end i was super pleased with the look
This is almost exactly how we did our makeup in high school. The only difference is that we over lined our lips (much like the Kyle Jenner lip) with brown eyeliner then filled them in with a brownie nude or a vampy red.....and yes the eyebrows were horribly thin. Great tutorial!
I used to wear my makeup very like this in the 90's, except I wore a brown lipstick like in your other 90's tutorial (Rimmel's Heather Shimmer to be precise!).
what I love about 90s looks is that they are easy, not high maintenance and comfortable for it's easy for every day!
Finally! An accurate grunge makeup tutorial instead of glitter, highlighter and heart stamps. I recently went back to wearing the brown lipstick/eyeshadow. I was into grunge as a kid then goth. The music is of course the most important thing but neither that or the fashions are being accurately represented with this goth/grunge aesthetic rubbish now.
Finally someone sees this! I look for goth makeup or looks and all I get are these alt aesthetic pictures with pink sprinkles and filters. Most of them are like e-girlish. Im very into old school goth but its very hard to find actual grunge/goth tutorials…
Loving these series Z and this one is gorgeous! You can pull off anything really but your eyes scream sultry here and I love this on you-light foundation, pale lips and all. Super pretty! Well done! I miss the 90's lol.
I LOVE all these videos!! Thank you Zabrena for all the research you did and for making the looks so spot on with wigs etc
thank you so much for this video!! it looks amazing and now i’m all grungified for my photoshoot! ❤️
1910's might be cool to see...i don't think i've seen anything out on youtube about that! :)
Loved this historically accurate grunge look! I would be interesting to see you recreate the goth/emo look of the 1980s (a la The Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees).
I would love to see an authentic 50s look or something even older than the 20s :)) Loooove this series, it's so interesting to see different styles in such researched detail!
You're absolutely right - brows were plucked pretty thin in the 90s. :) The *only* thing I would add is that the darker red lipsticks tended to be more brown, and the nudes were even paler (if you can believe that!)
All I can see is Sarah Michelle Geller!! 😹😹
so buffy am I right!
Love the series! Please do the late 70's bohemian/beach bombshell look...pretty please =)
I adore your historically accurate series!! So wonderfully interesting
Black, Burgundy Red, and Maroon are good lipstick colours
Yes I met my hs sweetheart in my fave flannel shirt!! Loved that flannel!! Great look!
I love your historically accurate video's,this one was brilliant and I absolutely love your hair it looks super coolxx
There are days in which I miss the grunge era; flannels were my thing (and I love my Docs).
1950s next, please & thank you!
Love the historically accurate/well-researched angle of your tutorials!
"What?!"
"was that enough attitude?" -giddy hands-
literally one of my favorite video openings ever.
I died of laughter. Lol
Yay. This brings back memories. I loved and still do love the grunge look, not Courtney Love's look but Kate Moss's. Thank you for doing this.
Love this look a lot! Thank you for doing it :) I'd love to see a 70's inspired look, mostly the boho hippie look. However I'm not sure if they wore makeup at all. But anything would be fun, love that series Xx
PLEASE DO MORE !!!! I absolutely love everything about this series. The history makes it extra good.
This is the best grunge look I've seen. Definitely the most accurate.
For any editorial 90s look, MAC is a must. You nailed it.
Thank you! I was looking for a quick grunge look, that was accurate. Everyone else is doing waaayyy to much 😂
I always used burgundy for my lip color during the 90s. Your look reminded me of Avril Lavine, and she sported the grunge look often, so I think you nailed it.
I would love to see a 1950s rockabilly look! :)
Yes, so accurate! I was a grungy teenager and yes, I wore almost white make-up and I was reapplying powder all the time! Looking shiny or glittery was frowned upon. For our lips my friends and I were into brownish rose colours. And I don't remember eyebrows being of interest at all. I dyed my hair black and at some point noticed that having blonde eyebrows is weird with that. So I painted them on in black like Bert from Sesame street! I wish we had taken more pictures back then.
1980s ROCK PLEASE
This is one of the best grunge tutorials and most accurate I have seen on youtube, plus with that hair style you really pulled it off. I like that you actually went and researched a little and stayed true to the dark and matte colors, you stayed grunge :) a lot of beauty gurus on RUclips do try to do the grunge look but they are still trying so hard to keep up with looking awake and having colored cheeks and bright faces and they add like blues and purples to the eyeshadow to give it more color; which is nice for a more updated look but to stay true to the 90s yours is the absolute best.
love the series! so interesting to watch and the makeup looks always turn out perfectly accurate :)
I love this! I was a teen in the 90's and I totally wore this look. I remember the lighter foundation. I don't remember any of us wearing lipstick but we did have a plethora of Lip Smackers! Remember those?! Too fun. I really enjoy these historically accurate makeup tutorials. Great job!
YES! Ha! I remember lip smackers!! Too funny! And the gooey, flavored lip glosses ... ahhh, good times!
I love your historically accurate videos! They're great! I'd love to see a 1930s look :)
This eye makeup look is giving me Buffy the vampire slayer vibes and I’m here for it!!! I think you nailed the eye look!
A glittering disco era make up look! This would make a great tutorial I think.
Love this look! Beautiful. Would love the 50s
Great look. Gwen Stefani wasn't really grunge, though.
Thank you! None of her examples were, except Courtney Love (earliest version of her)
Yes Gwen was grunge. There was a specific type of grunge where you looked like "Marilyn Monroe gone trashy". There were several deviations of the grunge look. And I hated every one of them! But this was fun to watch!
Yeah Shirley Manson was
Gwen stefani never made grunge music and I will never understand why people feel the need to shoe horn her into grunge. Just say she was alternative for crying out loud
No Doubt/Gwen Stefani was ska...just because you existed in the 90's did not mean you were grunge.
loooooooooove this makeup tutorial! i love grunge looks and you did a great job!
would you do 70's makeup tutorial?
I watch this video in 2020 and may I say that this hairstyle look fantastic on you. I just discover the historical serie and I love it.. It’s Saterday night, I’m chillen and loving this serie. Have a great weekend. Lots of love from The Netherlands. Ingrid 💄💄💕💕
I think this is my favorite look that you've done so far!! Beyond gorgeous, and really wearable. At least in my opinion, lol.
1910s, titanic inspire rose look?
90’s grunge baby here. I’m super fair skinned and used Bonny Bell white white for foundation 🙌 and one color shadow-Matte black with the edges smoked out. :) great lash and black liner finished it along with matted down dark dark brick red lipstick. :p
Oooh please do Victorian era or Egyptian era makeup - that would be so cool! I've seen other people request them too :D I love this series!
This is my everyday makeup tbh
That make-up +hair reminds me of Rachel from Friends. 90's =]
Could you do 70's punk makeup inspired by Joan Jett or like a Farrah Fawcett look?? Loved the tutorial btw!
Courtney, Drew, and Gwen were great picks for the makeup inspo !! 💞💞
You're like one of the most accurate people I've come across on YT. I Remember the 90s well and you look like the very common image I saw growing up around that time. Consider yourself subscribed. ;)
I wish I found a foundation too light for me xD But so far I have still not even found a foundation my shade because I am like translucent pale :/
I had the same problem the closest one I got was Alabaster by modelsprefer
McCartney Cobain check out Kat Von D's lock it foundation
McCartney Cobain Do you become skin color when you tan, like me? I start out clear!!
Elf. Pearl or Snow. I promise.
omg i love you i have been searching high and low for the perfect grunge makeup and i decided to give your look a try and it works wonders i love it so much THANK YOU!!!!
Oh this takes me back!!! I can confirm, eyebrows were pencil thin back then. And after a couple years of heavy plucking, they stuck. I'm stuck with my 90's brows! I saw some of the lip colors you wore in the 90's but dark brick reds or pinks/neutrals with dark dark lipliner were much more common. Gwen Stefani rocked the red, but it wasn't as common among the masses. It would've been slightly more historically accurate if you lined your waterline all the way across with the pencil. That was very very grunge. We ALL did that in the 90's. The other funny thing about the 90's was that liquid liner was so out of fashion. Like, you could barely find it by 1996. Everything was pencil. And it's not like today's heavily pigmented pencils. You had to heat the wet n wild pencil with a lighter and get it to melt a little to have any pigment. I remember hating pencils and stubbornly sticking to liquid liner. I think L'oreal made one kind and that was all they sold at the drugstore for awhile there. Oh, the 90's was so much fun!
I would love to see a 70's makeup tutorial!!
Everyone was tweezing the heck out of their brows in the 90s. Everyone my age is either lamenting the permanent damage it's done to their brow thickness or patting themselves on the back for not following that trend.
Am I the only one who thinks she looks like Mia's friend off of The Princess Diaries in the beginning intro? Hahah, I love all your tutorials, they're amazing
I'm a '90s teen /college student. We DEFINITELY had thin brows. I tweezed mine like no other, with Drew Barrymore as my inspo. Yours look great here. I just wore eyeliner without smudging it quite that much. You wanted it to stand out from your eyeshadow a bit. The face was definitely lighter, no bronzer and not much blush, if any. Brown lips were a huge thing, also. With lip liner that wasn't smudged in. And yes to matte everything lol Fun tutorial!
50's would be really neat!
Yes thin brows but we didn't really know things like transition shades. We just slept in out liner and piled shadow on top.
I love how in all your historically accurate tutorials you also fix your hair up to match the period style :)
Lilly Dee below - Courtney absolutely was a style icon. Marc Jacobs and Versace made lines based around her look. Maybe not for you, but her influence was huge.
The 20's!!!! Something has always intrigued me about that time :)
Did it! ;) Historically Accurate: 1920s Makeup Tutorial
You look you stepped into a time machine and came straight out of the 90's. I love it!!
My mom is a 90's teen and she is always telling me I look grungy (especially my sick straight down the middle hair) and this video shows me why. Lol :)
I watched this a couple of weeks ago and have been rockin the grunge look in a few different colors. I was still into def leopard and poison back then so I didn't wear the grunge make up then. Now that I am older I'm revisiting that make up time period! You're gorgeous as always! Keep up the great videos!
So I know this is pretty old, but I just wanna comment in case anyone else sees and is curious: brows of the 90s were either very thin or very thick; in either case, they were always bold and usually a dark color, especially for a grunge look like this. SO if you're interested in recreating this look and want to look even more authentic, just work with the current shape of your brows (no need to alter them unless you want to) then fill them in quite heavily
