    You're correct. Eyebrows were very thin and over-plucked. I naturally have thick eyebrows and it was a constant task to keep them as thin as was the fashion then.

    The 90's was my hey-day and you got the make-up perfect! Shirley Manson (of Garbage) was my inspiration and yes, we plucked those brows until they were pencil thin. I used to buy my make-up from Charles H. Fox in Covent Garden here in London because they sold the best "corpse" foundation which you just couldn't get anywhere else - looked like I'd just been dug up out of Highgate cemetery. Great tutorial! :)

    I was a teenager in the 90s . I did wear my foundation 1 shade lighter , no blush , brows plucked thin , smudged eyeliner . Usually I wore no lipstick , but many other girls I knew wore matte finish burgundy , browns , reds. Towards the large 1990s we wore body glitter , body and face jewels , more glittery eyes and lips . But the foundation always a shade lighter .

      I wore my foundation a few shades too dark. But for as long as I live there’s always something about fashion/make-up that I don’t get. And I see the mistakes 10 years later when someone shows me an old picture. At this time I don’t dare to shape my face. I’m scared as hell that I’m doing it wrong and will find out 10 years later. 🙈🙈

      @brideofsnape2046 5 лет назад +7

      Yeah, the dark or brown lipstick was a must. That whole look--smudged dark-lined "big sad eyes", paler foundation, and earthy lips transitioned nicely into the whole late 90's retro/swing look with lots of dark red, matte lipstick, pale foundation and girls learning how to do a liquid eyeliner wing again.

    I wasn't born until '95, but my mom was a grungy teenager in the early 90's, and from the pictures I've seen, her makeup looked A LOT like this. She also wore a lot of flannels, shorts with long johns/tights/fishnets, Doc Martens, and dyed her hair with koolaid

      Yes! Layer layer layer. All of our clothes were several layers. But living in the Seattle area, that's still appropriate since our weather is bipolar. Long Johns are still a staple and young guys loved it if they were the skinny type because it made them look bigger.

      I knew you looked familiar- I am 31 so c. 1993 I would have been the ripe old age of eleven. Too young for the combat boots, tried to wear the really smoked out eyes look (got laughed at by those ten years my senior, my face washed off by the tag team of Mom and Grandma who frog marched me to the principal where I had a lengthy discussion about drug use (mind you the strongest thing I was on was Swedish Fish chased down with Pixi Stix, so nobody heard my pleas to be left alone.) By the time I actually hit 16 in 1998 I realized I could bench press Kate Moss

      Hi,
      Me again, two years later: 33 years old now and the story still stands-tis all true. I am not doing this for any other reason than to point out posters here with nostalgia were lucky. Forgot to mention this last time, but the worst part was a few months later (I was a Catholic schoolgirl) when I stole my older sister's Nine Inch Nails CD: thankfully Grandma was not in town and had never heard of the band. She was more into WWII era swing music. But the teacher was not happy. She said we could bring in music to listen to in class. She made me play the whole song through, and I got sent back to the nun's office again for "I want to f*ck you like an animal."
      I was/am too little to be a member of Generation X, so for me the 90s was a whole other experience. I wore the Doc Martens right on through to 2004, but because I thought they were comfy. I was later banned from watching Chasing Amy and half of the things Kevin Smith ever made (Mom and Dad had already gone through enough with my makeup and the Nine Inch Nails fiasco) and most of Reality Bites went over my head since I was too busy staring at Ethan Hawke the whole time thinking he needed a bath. Didn't hear any of the dialogue, didn't understand it. Wasn't out of grade school and my Mom shopped for me at the Gap. Only got to see Ben Stiller in Heavyweights until I turned 17. Just stared laser-like at a man who voluntarily lived in his own bog of eternal stench. I thought the alcohol maybe was his only defense, a form of disinfectant.

    I was 18-20 during this time. I lived in Seattle and my hometown of Portland, OR. Grunge is ingrained into me. People get this so wrong. Part of grunge was minimalistic. Natural was preferred, we were children of hippies. I wore mascara and dark brown/red lipstick that was it. Not the Hollywood version of Grunge. I had my hair long, straight, and parted down the middle. We wore ripped jeans, bodysuits, and I wore my favorite vintage corduroy jacket. Vintage, or baby doll dresses as well. Sure we wore flannels but that wasn't all there was. I think cigarettes, pale ale, and Guiness Stout describes grunge more than flannels. No true grunge girl wore a face full of makeup, that went against everything Grunge stood for which was anti excess, anti money, anti status quo and anti anything 80's.

    • @twozniak4037
      @twozniak4037 5 лет назад +4

      I forgot about the babydoll dresses. With Docs. I loved those dresses. So comfy. And that's what I remember about the makeup and hair. Once my mommy stopped paying for my haircuts my hair ended up half way down my back cuz I was a broke college student. My hair parts on the side though. And makeup consisted of an appropriate shade of red lipstick. At least with my coloring, pale/super dark hair and eyes. I seem to remember a lot of brick red lipstick. L'Oreal. I struggle to this day because it seems like every day the infamous "they" come up with new tortuous grooming things. It was nice when just not being stinky was pretty much good.

    I made a comment on your 90's tutorial but YES on that pale PALE skin for grunge! I was very much a grunge girl and the foundation I wore was porcelain.....it took me a long time into the 2000's before I realized that I was NOT that fair LOL And even now I tend to buy my foundations too light, it's like no way I can't be a medium haha! I so loved the heroin-chic look without the heroin LOL My flannel shirts and Doc Martens......oh how I miss them so!!

      I had the opposite problem. I always somehow managed to get foundations a shade darker or too yellow for me, mostly because I tan on my body, but not on my head. So when I was trying to test it out, I was foolishly matching it to the back of my hand. And then I had no idea about blending. No one told me anything.

She MADE that movie what it was! ;) At the time that look was becoming popular, I was still living in the backwoods of GA (HA!) and we had some girls who would wear it, but because it was such a small town no one bothered them at school. That's the way it should be. :) It wasn't until I moved to FL that I saw how awful bullying is. :( Good for you for being YOU!

    I wore flannels, SHORT cut-off shorts, torn up jeans, chokers, and Birkenstocks (before they became heavily associated with the lesbian community). I used to cut bodysuits into midriff crop-tops. My fave lipsticks were Revlon's Coffee Bean (very frosty brown), Toast of New York (slight creamy red - very Cindy Crawford), and Avon's Raspberry Ice. My hair was always straight and parted down the middle. For my 32nd birthday a couple years ago, I had a 90s-themed party. Overalls, Babydoll dresses, beanies, and boots galore! STP, Candlebox, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Ugly Kid Joe, and Dr. Dre alllll niiight long! Grand times!

    This is almost exactly how we did our makeup in high school. The only difference is that we over lined our lips (much like the Kyle Jenner lip) with brown eyeliner then filled them in with a brownie nude or a vampy red.....and yes the eyebrows were horribly thin. Great tutorial!

    The eyes are perfect, I remember doing that to my eyes all the time, brown for day time black for night. Matte brown lips were everywhere too, but I don't remember any nude lips at all. That could just be me though, my best friend wore dark brown matte lips, but I loved Revlon Vixen a deep deep cool red burgundy color. I had a guy ask me why I was wearing black lipstick, the lights were low and he said it looked black, that's how dark lip colors were. Great video!

    yes, brows were plucked thin - mine still haven't recovered completely :( I wore Bonne Bell's Chutney lipliner, which was super matte and drying, or the very early 90's was all about Revlon's Toast of New York or Coffee Bean! I'm someone who lived grunge, and you're closer to being accurate than any other youtuber I've seen, but you're still not quite there. The reason you didn't find anything on 90s brows is because no one put makeup on their brows back then (but they were plucked thin). It was a totally "undone" look...people on the streets used tons of badly applied black eyeliner and generally nothing else. This was in response to the excesses of the 80s (including makeup and hair) and the economic depression that followed. You're doing more of a celebrity grunge tutorial, which doesn't so much reflect the look on the streets. It's pretty hard to do a makeup tutorial on street grunge...the only thing you'd need is a smeared black eyeliner! ;)

      I forgot to mention that but YES ... NO blush! They wanted the face to be super pale so the eyes popped. No definition on the cheeks. :) I'm not sure why the 30s hasn't started trending more, it was very similar to the 20s but with some minor differences, so maybe that's why ..? I just ordered an awesome wig for the 30s video! ;)

    I was a kid in the 90s, but I never saw the look as croppy. I loved the look. I thought it showed a more natural. Powerful look to women that wear it. I remember associating it with powerful women. I always thought that the reason people looked down on the look. Was connected to sexist ideas about women not being powerful and in control of them selves. This is a great tutorial. I can't wait to see more. :)

  • @sylviaanette4318
    @sylviaanette4318 9 лет назад +3

    So I know this is pretty old, but I just wanna comment in case anyone else sees and is curious: brows of the 90s were either very thin or very thick; in either case, they were always bold and usually a dark color, especially for a grunge look like this. SO if you're interested in recreating this look and want to look even more authentic, just work with the current shape of your brows (no need to alter them unless you want to) then fill them in quite heavily

    I was thinking maybe Victorian-era makeup next, but was makeup even a thing then? What about.. intead, oh, I know! Japanese geisha tea house style makeup! That one would be super fun, and very historical. Plus, you could skip using the specific bird droppings they used to use back before the 1940s for the white face part. :P

    • @Zabrena
      @Zabrena  10 лет назад +2

      Ouuu! Great suggestion! Thank you! The Victorian era was VERY minimalist, because they didn't want to be associated with actresses and prostitutes of the time who packed the makeup on, so they would wear rouge and lip stains, and that was it :)

    Oh this takes me back!!! I can confirm, eyebrows were pencil thin back then. And after a couple years of heavy plucking, they stuck. I'm stuck with my 90's brows! I saw some of the lip colors you wore in the 90's but dark brick reds or pinks/neutrals with dark dark lipliner were much more common. Gwen Stefani rocked the red, but it wasn't as common among the masses. It would've been slightly more historically accurate if you lined your waterline all the way across with the pencil. That was very very grunge. We ALL did that in the 90's. The other funny thing about the 90's was that liquid liner was so out of fashion. Like, you could barely find it by 1996. Everything was pencil. And it's not like today's heavily pigmented pencils. You had to heat the wet n wild pencil with a lighter and get it to melt a little to have any pigment. I remember hating pencils and stubbornly sticking to liquid liner. I think L'oreal made one kind and that was all they sold at the drugstore for awhile there. Oh, the 90's was so much fun!
