Mick Hucknall wrote this song at the age of 17, Holding Back The Years is about the time he decided to leave his father's house and about the mother who abandoned him when he was 3 years old. Today Mick is 60 ears old and continues to sing with Simply Red! It's about his mother abandoning him at age 3 & him hoping she'd return to have a relationship with him. He wasted years and tears wishing for her to return but she never did. Abandonment by a parent, especially a mother, will scar a person for life.
I think maybe there was a time when Simply Red were ALWAYS in the charts and on the radio and people got bored with hearing them, but yes what a beautiful voice he has.
My brother had this song at his funeral. He related to it because he never knew who his father was. My mom never disclosed who he was. Brakes my heart that all his life he wanted to know who he was...he was my 1/2 brother but loved him more than my full brother ...love and miss you Edward
He singing about the deep heart break and abandoned he experienced as a young boy just waiting for his mom to be there for him....and love him. Its such a beautiful song about a child's heartache 💔 I'm sure you 2 can understand about being a young boy missing their mother.
He is Simply Red because in Manchester England there are two football teams Manchester United (Nicknamed: The Red Devils), and Manchester City (The Citizens) ... when you are from Manchester you are either Red for United or Blue if you support Manchester City ... Mick supports Manchester United so simply Red
Mick Hucknall, the man with a saxophone at his throat. One of the best voices in the world and still alive and still singing with the same quality. Legend!
Saw them live years ago. Mick’s voice is so clear you’d think he was lip syncing. He wasn’t. Straight talent. No bad notes. Made it all look easy. Band is amazing live!
I saw Simply Red at The Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles in the 80s. Small Theater made it seem like we were up on the stage with Mick and the band. I'll never forget it. Thanks for watching them Tim and Fred.
This gorgeous song was inspired by his mother. His mom left the family at the tender age of 3 and this was his desire 2 see and 2 hold his mother once again. Absolutely beautiful. "If U Don't Know Me By Now" next please 👍
I've been listening to this song since I first saw the video in the 80's! I never knew it was supposedly about his mom! I always assumed it was about a lost love, I guess it wasn't that far off! Thanks for the info!
I can't believe y'all just found him. Ahhh he changed my whole urban understanding. And I was a black Philly girl a teenager like Simply Red. Between this and Hall and Mates. I wasn't sure what was happening. But loved all of it they crooned like our culture. Beautiful...

I was just listening to that song too! That’s song is great! Brings back memories of my childhood; my mom loved Simply Red!! I miss the 80s because of great music like this!
This song has always brought me to tears. I don't know if it's Mick Hucknell's voice, the music, the story behind it. I guess it's a combination. So achingly beautiful 😪
I was fine with it until it was used in Only Fools and Horses, in the scene where Del is standing on his own in a disco and this is playing - that got me. ruclips.net/video/TWYodCqmAyo/видео.html

Simply Red are a British soul and pop band formed in Manchester in 1985. The band is led by singer and songwriter Mick Hucknall, who, by the time the band initially disbanded in 2010, was the only original member left. I was living in England when this was released. The Brits love and respect soul music. I enjoy your enthusiasm and appreciation for our music. Love and best wishes.
THANk YOU THANK YOU GUYS!! I’ve been begging you guys to react to this. You guys delivered!! I LOVED this song as a teenager. It was so smooth and melancholy at the same time. And that VOICE! Mick Hucknall is special. Thank you!!

It wasn’t for me. Only the music. The rest mostly no. Better off now. Paid less for being female, etc. However, some parts of the USA are going back into that mindset so you might get your 86’s again.
This is awesome!! I love the concept of two black guys from the USA watching this video of Mick walking around Whitby in the UK singing his heart out! Awesome! Really really awesome! Thank you guys for likeing this song, it's always been one of my favourite songs ever!
Hey Guys, was fun watching you hear Simply Red for the first time. I'm a 76 year old man, been listing to that song for many years, still listing today. Thanks for the vid.
Hey twins I heard a Radio personality talking about you guys the other day. On The Wave she talked about your appreciation for music of the past and how you went viral.
So, some history on this song because it's one of my favorite songs on the planet... Mick Hucknall, who formed Simply Red, wrote this song when he was 16. Hucknall's mom left him and his father when he was very young, leaving Mick's father to raise him. His father was a strict disciplinarian and Mick often wished his father could be different. He wished his mother was there to turn to in those tougher moments in his life, but she never returned. That's what the line "strangled by the wishes of pater; hoping for the arms of mater" is about. Mick has said the rest of the lyrics are about remembering childhood, looking back on 'wasted years' spent too long crying, hoping for things to change, but knowing they never will. Pretty complex stuff for a 16 year old to write, but it's obvious Mick was a thoughtful guy. And this is one of the most haunting songs ever, never fails to make me cry. I can't say much about the rest of Simpy Red's catalog, since this is pretty much the only song of theirs that moves me. "Money's Too Tight To Mention" isn't bad, but this song is the epitome of Mick's songwriting and singing talent, imo.
Smooth and soft groove. Just proves you can't judge a book by its cover or in this case the dude that has fine pipes like Mr Red.Loved it. Good memories of the 80'!!😉❤s
I heard it when it first dropped on the radio in West Germany and thought it was some smooove black chick! Found out he looked just like me. I'm 'sleep!
@Buddy Lembeck Haha, well there ya go. Thanks, I didn't know. I just always remember that he was English because I assumed he was Irish or Scottish (because of the hair) and was surprised when he was "English". Not that English can't have red hair... Thanks.
Saw Simply Red live in 1995, Mick Hucknell has one of the most unique voices in the music industry, it is a joy to hear him belt out those high notes with such ease. When the opening bars of Fairground started the arena went absolutely nuts, superb concert all thanks to the little Manc with the red hair.
The location for this music video was Whitby and the abbey ruins that you see in the background in some shots, was the setting for Bram Stokers Dracula.
Been lucky enough to see Simply Red live three times, fantastic each time. So many great songs. mick had long hair at the time, would come on s5age with it up in a ponytail then part way through the concert would put his head forward, pull the tie out of his hair and flick his head back, the women would go wild! One of my favourite songs is For Your Babies. Beautiful
Their were some great British singers and groups in the 80'S and 90's. Depeche Mode,The Cure,Joe Jackson,Loose Ends. Simple Minds were a Scottish but iconic 80'S, have to react to them.
This dude can really sing. One of the best singers I've seen. Check out his live version of "you make me feel brand new". Originally by the stylistics. One of my favorite songs. He pulled off a very difficult song to sing. I didn't think that it was possible after the stylistics. He's awesome!
This is such a beautiful story about his life. As a mother, I would wrap my arms around him. He's so talented and a voice that is so special! Love him! ❤❤❤
This is one of those songs that I liked well enough when it was new and I was a kid, but TRULY came to appreciate it when I was a grown-ass, heartbroken adult. This song is so perfect: Mick Hucknall's vocals give me chills, the lyrics play in my head, and the instrumentation and productions just puts me in that mellow mood. Glad y'all love it.
Oh...this song! Have not heard it in years but I still get chills. Its easy to take for granted that there will always be music that makes you feel....something. Hearing this again makes me realize how rare it is...
Finally, y'all played one of my favorites from the great 80's British bands!! That song, from that teenager, Mick Hucknall, that great time ago, is still played on the radio & gives great vibes!! Thank u 4 enjoying Simply Red, like we did! BTW, Hucknall still performs at age 60, sounding even greater!!🤩😉
Another 80s artist that would be surprised by his voice and jazzy pop swag is Joe Jackson - Steppin Out. A reaction of that would be awesome. You make Indiana proud guys. Keep up the great work and always have fun!
That song still strikes a chord to this day. Other Simply Red songs to check out: Money's Too Tight To Mention, Sunrise, and If You Don't Know Me By Now.
Such a beautiful that transcends all ages and years. This song is always bitter sweet for me it was one of my eldest brother's favorites. He was killed when I was 17 almost 32 years ago. So happy to see you both appreciating the artistry and talents of previous generations! Keep them coming.
This song was my favorite when it first came out and still is on my play list. It is such a soulful song. Please play Sunrise, it's one of the most beautiful tunes of all time. Love this channel and you both are such a joy to watch.
Seen these guys in concert a few times now...micks voice is absolutely amazing live. Think you better go down the simply red rabbit hole... money’s too tight to mention, something got me started, a new flame, if you don’t know me by now...to name a few!
He’s singing about his mother, who left him as a small child; true story. That pain is what makes him sing so beautifully.
Thank you for that history! These words also hit me deeply with a past relationship!.
Thanks for the knowledge.
I've heard this song before. What a voice! Sad history.
Still Beautiful and Sad..
He just can SANG!

Hi guys
Simply Red is actually a British Group, one of the greats of the late 80’s and 90’s, the lead singer’s name is Mick Hucknall.
Really? He always seemed Irish to me lol
I was today years old when I found this out.....I simply equated the name to the singer. Thank you for this info.

Such a beautiful that transcends all ages and years. This song is always bitter sweet for me it was one of my eldest brother's favorites. He was killed when I was 17 almost 32 years ago. So happy to see you both appreciating the artistry and talents of previous generations! Keep them coming.
You need to listen to “stars” and “ If you don’t know me by now “ , they will blow you away!!!
❤️ Stars. One of my happy place songs.
@@SparklimgSam agreed!!
I bawl my eyes out to stars it’s a very bittersweet song for me
Love singing along with this beautiful man! What a voice 😍
Always loved this song, definitely an unexpected gem on this channel. Thanks guys!
Saw him live, fronting the faces at the first vintage festival. He was absolutely amazing.
Just love his voice
This song was my favorite when it first came out and still is on my play list. It is such a soulful song. Please play Sunrise, it's one of the most beautiful tunes of all time. Love this channel and you both are such a joy to watch.
Seen these guys in concert a few times now...micks voice is absolutely amazing live. Think you better go down the simply red rabbit hole... money’s too tight to mention, something got me started, a new flame, if you don’t know me by now...to name a few!
Mick Hucknall "RED" is from Manchester, UK. The group has some great ones. One of my favorites is "Stars".
Absolutely love Simply Red. Thanks for reacting to this banger. All the best tunes come from the Uk. Fact 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
