Song about having to leave home and “holding back the years” to delay doing so. There’s a whole LOT going on underneath this song Mick has discussed over the years. What a journey this man’s life has been.
Most people miss the lyrics but they are so profound! "Strangled by the wishes of Pater... Hoping for the arms of Mater" as in paternal and maternal. So Strong! When you understand the lyrics the video becomes so clear. And many people think he is day dreaming about the pretty teacher. But it is his father in the grave yard with the teacher. I make random people smile every day, at my current job. I have a lot of elderly shoppers that I deal with, and some of them look so grouchy or lonely. When I see them approach my check out lane and they say something about me waiting for them I say "I've been waiting ALL DAY! Where have YOU BEEN???" That always makes them chuckle. Or if I recognize them, I tell them- and mean it- that it's so very good to see them. I KNOW it makes a difference, and how can that not make one feel necessary to someone? They ARE appreciated- even the most grouchy, crabby person I deal with every day, and I know they appreciate me, because the next time they come in, they seek me out and I get smiles.

This is a Brain Worm song for me . Every time I hear it , it hangs in my head for DAYS. lol I just go ahead and put it on replay for an hour or so and wallow in it 🎸☮️💚
Loved this siong when it came out, I was like like 8 or 9. Now I *feel this song
This is one of the most soulful songs ever written

His voice is??????? There are no words, just simply great.
Loved seeing your expressive face and reaction to this song . . . both of you are so perceptive, but I appreciated hearing your comments on this one today. My father just died this week, and this song tugs at my heart strings. If only we could go back in time and re-live some of the best moments. I feel blessed to have some special memories though, and I'll keep holding onto them. Blessings to you!
Filmed in North Yorkshire town of Whitby, the castle ruin is the inspiration for Bram Stokers Dracula novel
Yes, this song brings back memories of a troubled and heart aching childhood. This songs encapsulates the feeling perfectly
Red had soooooo many good hits. Love his voice and sounds
Hi Rob~ This Band, Lead Singer Mick Huckhall out of Manchester England. In the 80's a lot of the great music came out of England. Known as the 2nd British Invasion. They had a lot of ( sometimes unexpected ) Heart & Soul. Glad you enjoyed it. We had the best music ~! Groove On in Kindness and Love ~! Now I'm going out to make someone smile today ~;-)
Bring Back so Many Memories 1985 and Still one of My Favorites 👏🏾❤️
This is so emotional, my Mom loved this song, she passed a few years ago and I hear these old songs and it's just cry I miss her so much. I do try to keep in moment and 100% agree, make great memories NOW!

He does this live many years later and it's fantastic!
Hope and helplessness and heartache expressed so perfectly.

Omg, Dude, I know!!! What an amazing song and voice! I remember blasting this and crying so hard as a kid, in the 80s. I felt every bit of this song, while in a living hell.
Love your reaction and I love your kindness. You and Amber are so pure , sweet and kind . I constantly compliment strangers for that very reason. I want to make people happy, even if I don’t know them . Y’all are making us all smile even though you don’t know us . Thank you for giving me those good chillbumps of listening to one of my favorite songs of all time , but it’s like the first time listening to it when I watch a reaction from y’all . Big hugs 🥰
Love Simply Red... especially If You Don't Know Me By Now. Enjoyed your reaction
He was young here - but later he did some collaborations (for instance: with B.B. King on "The Thrill is Gone" -- His voice is much stronger and still so smooth.

First, Rob I love your outlook on life. This is my fav Simply Red song. First heard it in 1987, I'm 71 years old now and I still love it.
Always love seeing you younguns find the music I enjoyed growing up with.
I’m so proud of all the UK talent we’ve exported. I’m a Londoner and obviously biased I’m also in my seventies and adored Motown. Love music from wherever it comes from.
Heard this one a bunch - however, this is more 80's pop. I did the rock thing in the '80's. btw, you guys have topped 13k. Congrats ! Definitely cause you are so genuine.
I love stars ...his voice is amazing my sister just saw him in concert .

By so far the best 80´s ballad. For me, eternal. Part of my life and still give me chills listening to it.
The "kid", Mick Hucknail, was about 25 when Holding Back the Years came out. He had recorded it earlier with another band but did not get noticed then. About the song: "His mother abandoned the family when he was three; the upheaval caused by this event inspired him to write "Holding Back the Years", which would become one of Simply Red's biggest and best-known hits." (From Wikipedia)
