Made during my final year at film school, Taking a Little Time to Feel Sorry for Myself is my only feature to date made with a script. While it may not really be a Christmas movie, it's set during the holidays so I figure now is as good of a time as any to get it up! It's like Die Hard in that way and maybe only that way. Hope you enjoy!
It's also like Die Hard in that it is now one of my favorite Christmas movies, and also that helicopter explosion at the end.
Reminded me more of Thor: The Dark World
Having watched your later works first, I could totally tell this was scripted. While this is better than anything I could've come up with during my time at film school, I'm glad you later ditched the scripts altogether!

What a strange and wonderful thing youtube can be. I get a reccomendation for an animated video about the first level of an rpg: "hey, this guy is funny in a weird way", "oh, he doesn't have many animations, let's see one of these sketches", "oh these are actually really good", "what? he makes movies, i'll just see the first few minutes", "oh wow this is good writing, I guess I'm seeing the whole thing now".

Your guttural yelp in a crowded room that's holding themselves back from feeling something real.
This movie made me feel like I was going insane. Every interaction had mischaracterizations, misconstrued sayings and disconnections. Every path and every person you tried to find solace with refused to drop the act and just feel sorry. Eventually, the world's constant rejection of who you are either molds you into exactly what they appear to be or breaks you piece by piece. Bravo, Joel. You made me feel something real.

The speech about wishing to express sadness without worrying about a reaction out of everyone really hit home for me
that last scene hit pretty good, with the stranger in the elevator not saying anything to bud about him crying and ignoring him crying infact, but he was ready to make idle meaningless chit chat before, it really do be like that sometimes, strangers sometimes just want to stay strangers

Having seen Pretend That You Love Me before, I noticed right away that this was much more scripted, and thought I might not like it as much. But the dialogues and the story are just written so well, with some hilarious scenes in there, and such a weird, lovely main character.
Loved his obsession with telling everyone about his digestive issues, all the fight club references (the support group scene was pure gold), the fortnightly fort night, break in, and so much more! Oh, and that song in the credits is absolutely perfect.
Made me want to watch more of your feature films, and rewatch your latest one!
I'm so glad I watched this until the end. About halfway through I noticed how few views this has and that's honestly a tragedy on par with Bud's destroyed balls. And it was all so relatable. Bud seemed like the epitome of the good intentioned but socially useless person with absolutely no depth beyond being nice, but that made it so much easier to relate to him. I mean he seemed pretty 2D in that he just wanted to relate with people but he really just couldn't. And that made us want to relate to him because he's pretty much just a human and nothing more. I feel like that was sort of the point of his name being bud. It may just be my experience, but I never actually refer to a friend as bud. It's always toward someone like a coworker who I'm entirely neutral with and just don't feel like saying their full name so I call them bud and Bud seemed like the embodiment of that sort of empty relationship. So we were pretty much able to just witness these pretty crappy things unfold in his life and just totally emphasize. I really don't think he even necessarily did anything wrong. I mean he could have been less awkward at times but it's just who he is and even so he ended up meeting Karen who he totally bonded with. It was just blow after blow for this dude and he was only equipped for the most basic reaction to these tragedies. So even though he kinda broke down in the elevator, I feel like that may have been the most positive scene for him in the entire film because he was able to express that he was upset which could be the start of him being able to relate with people in a more honest and expresive way. We have so many movies where the characters are so complex and they go through these emotional rollercoasters that, yes, do make the audience feel sad, but they don't make us empathize. I could really feel this dude's pain even when he explicitly couldn't show it himself and I think that's a really special feeling you managed to capture here. Thank you for making this film, Joel.
Edit: and can we appreciate that in this 75 minute film with several natural slow downs and scene changes, there wasn't a single ad inserted
I think you expressed some really good points. Didn't think about the name thing but it really works. 'Bud' is like a short-hand for stranger. I feel like the key scene in the film for me is when the girl he barely knew (Laura?) tells him to his face that he thinks he's being subtle but he really isn't and he's just not equipped to hear that in the slightest. It's kind of remarkable portraying someone who's pretty hopeless in a way that the audience empathizes with that character (even losing his balls seems like he is the butt of a cosmic joke) but this manages to not only do that but sow the seeds that he might actually learn from it.

This caught me totally off guard. This and the piece where he’s house sitting. I’m mostly familiar and have been watching your comedy shorts, but this genuinely seemed to capture that sort of meek feeling when you’re totally inexperienced and haven’t even really learned to fake until you make it.
The obsession with a relationship that never was, the blindness to reality, the obsession with what’s going on to you and the feeling that it’s incredibly meaningful past the point of it’s actual meaning, losing the actual gravity of the situations in the process.
This was great, and although heavily stylized -and I’m no expert- it was very well written. It seems like it was written into a much shorter version of something much larger. You’re a talented person, and the actors were all spot on.
I hope you’re going the places I want you to go, or the places you want to go.
Jesus, that was beautiful man. You did a great job, specially at the break-in scene and the party one. Maybe you just had me captivated, but I felt as if every character that had importance stood out in the party shot, despite it being as crowded as it was. Hell, I could even tell Nicole was gonna be a part of the scene before she was even mentioned. I dont know how I just found this film of yours today. Congratulations

Just Finished watching this! I loved it.The writing was soo good.The dialogues were hilarious.The part where you and your dad are splitting wood and he says 'did you bang her right?' I started laughing very hard.Scenes like the one in the bar Where Laura Doesn't want to sit with Bud is so well done.I cringed while watching it,I could really feel how uncomfortable it must have been for Laura.
The direction was superb I never thought you could do so much with wide shots.Like if it was me I would close up everytime when the characters are talking.I am definitely gonna be using more wide shots when characters are talking.
I loved how you blocked the breaking in the house scene.It was so well done.The camera stayed at one place but you could understand when both the guys are were screwing up when the lights started to switch on.Brilliant.
Also Joel , you're such a great actor.I felt so invested in Bud.The film gave me a very "Inside llewyn davis" vibe which I loved because it made me laugh at places I never thought I would("You're balls are destroyed" I cracked up).Also I am no expert but it looks like this film could definitely transform to the stage.With those long takes and wide shot it made me feel like I was watching a play.This isn't a bad thing ,Just different.
I just have a few questions,I would love if you could answer them.
1.How did you record audio for the scenes?Did you use boom mics or just dubbed it in post?(I am trying to find how I can record audio cheaply for microbudget movies)
2.Was it hard for the actors to do such long scenes with any cuts? Most of my actors I worked with can't pull it off maybe thats because we are amateurs? Would you do the scenes differently if you didnt have a talented cast like the one above?
P.s: Also are there any more indie movies you would recommend?

I'm a sucker for wide shots, I think close-ups are so abused in filmmaking. A close-up needs to tell us something, it's hyper reality, it's when we can see someone's emotions clearer than real life. A close-up needs to be special. If every shot is a close-up, no close-up is special.
I love the home break-in scene, it's perhaps my favorite scene in the movie.
To answer your questions:
1. For this film I used mostly a boom microphone, and for a few scenes I used lav microphones. Some scenes I had to dub in post, but avoid this if possible, it's never as good. Since making this film, I have gotten a tried and true audio set up. and that's just two wireless lav microphones recording into a Zoom H4n sound device. Lav microphones are a godsend, you can frame the shot however you want and the microphones will still be picking up the audio the same. If I knew what I knew now, I would've done lavs for every scene in this movie, would've saved me a lot of pain of doing ADR for some scenes.
2. I don't recall the long scenes being particularly hard. As long as you make it fun and comfortable, and include the actors in the creative process, it'll come fairly naturally. Don't be strict about getting lines perfect, it's more important that the scene flows.This is the only movie of mine I wrote a script for, I strongly prefer improv. Amateur actors do much better with improv. Remembering lines is very stressful and it's easy to lose the intention. Everyone knows how to converse and react, so improv comes naturally, whereas memorization and reciting tends to lends itself to a more logical part of the brain resulting in performances that feel scripted as opposed to real. My film '31 Days in Marshall, North Carolina' is also on the channel, it's a movie I made with strangers in a town I'd never been to. None of them had acting experience but all of them did a phenomenal job, and that's because they were themselves. They had fun, they got to make up the conversations, trying to control everything will often make a film feel fake.
PS: As far as other independent movies go, I'd recommended Cody Clarke's 'Bed' and 'Strummer', Dan Lotz's 'Chlorine' and Dax Flame's 'Indoor Garden' (all are free on RUclips)

I recommend “Neutral” by Nathan Barnett; it’s such as good a indie film as Mr. Haver’s works like this one, it’s so good and he’s a godsend when it comes to physical comedy

This was just equally funny, sad and beautiful. It was about 4 years ago and i blame myself for watching it just now. It had passed about 3 years since i cried for the last time... now i can't say it anymore. The feeling of loneliness is just intense. Great Work.

These films are so underrated. I'm ashamed of how long I've been following you..and how many times I've replayed your other videos and have yet to sit down and watch your films. So glad I've had the time to watch them all recently (due to a breakup actually :P).. 10\10 the scene with your dad cutting wood.. easily my favorite in the film. So far, 'We have to leave here together' has been my favorite film. It's incredible.. and my favorite video as of now is together we watched snakes on a plane x)

I am so glad your channel has picked up the reception it has through the weekly videos, but it’s features like this that absolutely blow me away. I don’t know the first thing about cinematography, but I know this film hit me like a punch in the chest. I was glued to this story and completely mesmerized by the ambitiously artistic shots. The home invasion scene was freaking fantastic and I can’t believe you did so much with so little.
I was so happy to see “Drowning in Potential” get the reception it deserved, but features like this and “Forget About Everything for Awhile” are equally as brilliant with a fraction of the audience. Knowing this; and watching your discussions on filmmaking, helped me to realize there is ZERO correlation between artistic brilliance and views/likes/subs.
I can’t express how important it has been for me to realize that, as I too am an artist (musician), and I fell victim to that idea that nobody is listening, therefore my art must not be any good. Now that I’ve risen above that, I'm more creative and ambitious than I have ever been, and I’m back to writing, creating, and posting projects that are important to me rather than what is going to “get views” or be well received by the general public. I’ve never felt better or more sure about what I’m doing and who I am.
Just wanted to say thanks Joel, for being you. Unapologetically. Keep doing your thing and we’ll be watching.

Great job, man, thank you for sharing, I really enjoyed this. The cinematography has a nice style to it that isn't overstated. The setup starts off like your generic "woe is me" indie plot, but Bud (and the other characters) develop a lot of uniqueness in the third act. You can really feel Bud losing touch with reality and slipping into actual madness as a result of his depression, and one really hopes he is able to develop some self awareness in time to get on with his life. Also, distilling the final argument between Bud and his ex-girlfriend into simple guttural screaming was really clever.
I love your work, all of it. You do a great job with your characters. It's amazing how you can make yourself look different so many times.

Absolutely Beautiful! I love the amount of unique techniques you guys set up. For example, the sneaking into someones house, but we don't really get to see the action inside. And I can so relate to screaming, it's so freeing

I just found this film and I'm glad I did. Extremely well acted, with strong emotional resonance, and genuinely funny humor peppered throughout. I liked the shooting style too, with most of the shots being long unbroken takes. Major props.
I come back and watch this film every time I'm having a really bad time. I had a bad break up a few years ago and this helped me strangely enough. I can't tell you how many times I watched it back then. I'm sort of like Bud in a way, awkward but a little more self aware 😅. Anyways that's it, stay strong anyone else out there struggling with a bad break up or loss.

Walter Shite seal of approval. I can see how your style has evolved since, especially in the cinematography and camerawork, but it still feels quite like. Joel Haver movie. The presence of a script is an interesting peek into what you’re like with one, but it’s clear you were born to spread your wings freely. Amazing feature

I got invested. The characters you create and portray are so. "Personal" idk if that's the right term to use or not. Every one I can see a little bit of myself. Especially Bud. The shots you pulled off the wide angles everything was just wonderful. I've watched a handful of your full length films and i can't wait to see them all. Bless you and all the work you do.

This is my first time viewing this. I didn't realize it was over an hour long until I was ten minutes in, by then I knew I needed to watch it all in one sitting. This movie makes me feel, I'm not sure what that feeling is. It's kind of like a mix of hope and crippling depression. As a fellow filmmaker you inspire me Joel, and thank you for helping me forget about my problems for a little while.
