Trent and I have made a tradition of shooting a feature length movie during The Oscars. This is our third year doing so, the previous two years we’ve made chaotic movies with large casts and wanted to do something different this year. I hope you enjoy.
I also challenge my viewers to do the same, the submissions are still rolling in till Sunday night, here’s a growing playlist of the movies people made this year - ruclips.net/p/PLKtIcOP0WvJBJNsjxuJoTBqh3U8MWPhLc
This one really hit the mark. Well done!
Joel I really liked this and it's inspired me to set aside a period of every day to just do nothing
Real enjoyed this thanks
Such a great idea for an oscars tradition
this is inspiring. what are you gonna call the not-oscars? notscars?
This was so much fun to make with you dude ❤️
Love you Trent ❤️
I love your videos Mr Trent, please keep making them. The patience video was my favorite. You and Joel were so funny in this movie.
❤
This is the definitive bromance film of 2023.
Love you both! I've wept so many times watching your inspirational content. You guys are what's right with the world, and you give me hope and a reason to keep going
Watching this makes me think that everyone needs to get randomly stuck in a room with a friend at some point in their lives. Really makes you appreciate time itself

My bestfriend was murdered last year and I would give anything to be locked in a room with him for a couple hours . This was simple but beautiful.thank you Joel and Trent
I’m sorry for your loss, Logan. I’m glad this film could provide you some comfort. Much love❤️
My friend passed earlier this week. This does help. Doing the memorial for him at a skatepark tomorrow. Love you all.
@@michaelfiori6700Much love man. They'll be waiting for you on the other side, just make sure you live enough life for both of you ❤
sorry for your loss ❤
I once got locked in a bathroom in a co-worker's house. Then he opened the door to show me how easy is to get locked up... and now there were two dumbasses locked in a bathroom. Granted, we were high as fuck.
This feels nostalgic, playing as a kid with my friends on a day with nothing to do. Love you Joel, you inspire me with every project you put out
@Mr. Mackey what
Those days lasted forever.
@Mr. Mackey The child/adult barrier is arbitrary on many levels since all in life works only in gradients. I am far more free today than I was as a kid.
@Mr. Mackey Only if you have lost your sense of fun and wonder. Don't take life to seriously.
It's kind of sad that realistically these days don't exist anymore. There might be periods where you don't have your phone or Internet access, but they're rare.
Even for kids growing up in a household that restricts it, that's realistically only gonna be a thing at their house and not their friends
I was expecting it to take a dark / depressing tone but what actually happened was a lovely, warm movie about making the most of nothing - so good, especially for being shot in just three hours.
Yeah, I remember one of my favorite episodes of family guy did something like this and that's sort of the tone it took, I was happy to see another take on this concept.
@@themindset4164 hey that’s awesome
Everything with Joel and Trent is an automatic 10/10.
Seconded
Joel’s laugh at their jokes is amazing. The pure joy in his eyes.
I see you saw the posters.
Perhaps I'm being overly emotional because I am super tired due to certain circumstances, but this sure was beautiful and I hope you two keep treasuring your friendship. It's so obvious just by watching the films you create together that it's such a genuine one.
I’ll do everything I can to keep cherishing our friendship (and all friendship!) thanks for watching my friend❤️
@@Joel-Haver Thank you for taking the time to reply, this made my day
Whenever I watch your vids I realise my "awkward" behaviour is just how people act in general and that makes me feel better
Lol it makes me feel the opposite, like ‘how come my awkwardness isn’t that cool’
@@TeChNoWC7 "Just" gotta find those Trents and Noahs that only shrug and say "Ok" at your awkwardness.
Have to rent out a movie theater to watch this! So i haven’t seen it yet but I’ll let you know my thots tomorrow it’s probably awesome.
It’s pretty awesome.
Knowing your thots would definitely be awesome.
Can you hook me up with some of your thots? I don't really need them, but it's been a dry season for me
It's been a day. What're your thoughts cherds?
I think you have to trent out a movie theater to experience this as intrented.
clicked on this tinking it was just a short 5 min sketch. i was playing games while listening. i was so enthralled in the conversations i didnt even notice 40 minutes went by. Its so cool how you guys do this and incentivice everybody else to do the same
exactly the same!
After not watching the Oscars, I can say this was the best part of it.
Brendan Fraser winning his Oscar was the best part (but I also didn’t watch the Oscars)
I concur. I'd rather watch low budget top notch entertainment than multimillion dollar embezzlement schemes masked as "entertainment" any day.
I hope to have a friendship this strong one day. Thank you Joel for showing that special moments can happen anywhere at anytime, especially stuck in a room full of pee plants and during 3 hours of filming during the Oscars. I filmed two films for this, because the first one went over 3hrs and I felt guilty, so now I'm editing two films in a week. First two films I've ever made, back to back...Thanks again for the inspiration, I really needed it.
Woah! That’s commitment! Submit both if they’re done on time, congrats on making two films :)
Why you feel guilty filming so long?
That was a warm and fuzzy little film! The musical (peeing) interludes were funny but also a little poignant. Thank you for holding this Oscar film festival, and for inspiring us all, Joel. Because of you, I made my first film in four years. I’m very grateful to you and I’m excited to see what my fellow filmmakers came up with!
I give this comment an A+ for quality and a C for difficulty.
Aww so happy to hear the event got you creating! It's such a fun and crazy limitation that really pushes you into new places. Thanks for watching
Sometimes that warmth and fuzziness can be your undoing though.
What does poignant mean
holy shit, didnt expect to see you here, dean
The idea at 37:20 of Santa unwillingly getting sucked up in the Vent destroyed me. Just knowing he wants to help so bad but unwillingly gets sucked away made me laugh so hard
i’m 30 minutes in, and this is the best way i’ve ever spent half an hour. i will now leave this ambient conversation on every time i feel lonely.
Oscar WISHES he could make a film this good! Amazing watch guys!
I think this might be my favorite thing you guys have done. I needed it this morning. I got pretty frustrated at something dumb, and saw this and watched it to cool down, and the song you played at the end was exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks Joel and Trent
The exact same thing happened to me. Hope tomorrow is better for you man.
lol just happened to me
lol just happened to me
40 minutes of the same two people in the same one room, and not a single dull moment. It didn’t have the plot twists, setting changes, excessive amount of characters that mainstream shows have, and yet it still managed to stay more interesting than a majority of shows out today. First time in a while that I actually watched and enjoyed a 40 minute video to the very end.
This was wildly endeering. Mates being mates, so raw and unfiltered. I love when films include everyday conversation and dialogue that doesn't evolve the overarching plot - simply including conversations to understand the way the characters are and what their relationships are like.
This was so beautiful! The whole war and funeral bit encapsulated that feeling of doing nothing with your friends as a child so well. Really sweet story, although I do have a question: How did you guys eat? Or drink?
The film definitely pushed us back into that imaginative and free space of winging it like kids again. Sadly, we had to go hungry for the night.
I’ve watched you grow from small films, to animation, to this and I can honestly you’ve blown me away each time. I know you’ve been through a lot to get here, and your quality of work improves each time. You bring the creativity back to not only RUclips, but movies as well. Hope you’re doing well man, you got some great buddies and an even greater future as well.
loved the climactic firefight. I also loved it just being you guys being friends. No escalation or arguing as with other "trapped in a room" episodes. It's real and very funny! :]
I’m surprised they didn’t just watch a movie or something lol
@@PtylerBeats 40 minutes of 2 dudes watching the joe rogan experience
incredible. i love how comfortable your videos seem - not that the characters aren't awkward, but it seems like there's always meaningful action, even when nothing particularly meaningful happens. strangely nostalgic and sad. they feel so profoundly real
this is so beautiful. thank you so much joel and trent. it feels both too perfect to be improvised and too authentic to be scripted. you guys are so talented and i aspire to be like you someday. i’m going to make a film this summer because of you and i couldn’t be more thankful for your inspiration. best wishes :)
It feels like watching a core memory between friends.
This is unbelievably touching. You two have such a beautiful friendship and even though I watched the stream and can confirm this was only shot during the Oscar's (and I hope Carter is ok), this feels so complete. I'm excited to see how everyone else's films turn out and to post my own. Amazing job Joel and Trent!
3 minutes in and I'm in angst over whether they will realize the hinges are on the inside and they have a screwdriver. SWEET CATHARSIS WHERE ARE YOU?!
That's what really sells me on them not being 'good' at fixing stuff. I wanted to scream at the screen for a minute, though.
I didn't even realize 😂😂
I mean if you wanna be like that, they could have used the screwdriver as a lever to turn the opening mechanism. Or fingers.
Really seems like 99% of people would immediately spend an honest 20-30 minutes trying to escape. If they didn’t have a screwdriver this would’ve felt much more realistic.
Ladies and gentlemen the typical man ij 2024
You two are cute together. Although there’s no hard resolution, you still get the feeling they’ll be alright.
Joel, great work!
As a fan, I really enjoyed this. The dialogue is great, as I supposed should be expected between two friends. It's always a pleasure when you upload a longer piece.
As a locksmith, I'd like to say: there are a large number of locks that a majority of locksmiths can't open. Additionally, these days, anyone can buy the majority of tools used by locksmiths, although these can be pretty restricted by local law and there's plenty of specialty tools only sold by retailers who require verification of licensure.
always been wondering, is that lawyer who opens every lock legit?
@@Majosephine04 lock picking lawyer? His videos are legit, yes, though I imagine it takes a LOT of patience. Personally, I don't have the time to dedicate to practicing on medeco and the like but judging by his time with American lock and abus alongside his methodology, it's legit.
Trent and Joel are the perfect duo, every video they make together is a banger
For real what is keeping the locksmiths from going rogue and sneaking into our homes?
Nothing. Live the rest of your life in fear
Have you watched LockpickingLawyer? Half the locks out there can be opened with a magnet or a tap in the right spot.
The truth is nothing is stopping anyone from sneaking anywhere. The locks don't do anything
these short films are one of the only things that make me genuinely happy, they're just so raw. It never really comes across like this in any other form of media.
Dang this hit home. Reminds me of those lazy days with the boys just chillin. I miss those days.
You and me both, we all need some chill time with the homies❤️
I would say the budget of this was about three quarters of interstellar
Close actually 5X Interstellar
I love how it went from immediate comedy, to stuck with and friend that eventually becomes a great friend with a side with comedy. Makes me want to lock my friends up in my room without any help for the next 3 days
Don’t let your dreams be dreams. Lock your hobos up and bond them together to your heart’s content.
"What's up?"
"It's just now settling in that we're actually stuck in here."
This is beyond funny. The ending was so good. It couldn't have come at a better time. Thanks for making everything you do.
I really liked how you took one room and made so many camera angles with it. That loft space you used to live in trained you well haha. The corner frames of your face between you and Trent on the bed was my favorite.
I really love the comment Joel makes about never giving yourself time to sit alone with your thoughts distraction-free because in a way this film is allowing the viewers to do that with Joel and Trent. Sure, you're still following a basic plot, but this is probably the closest most of us will get to being alone with our thoughts for a while. appreciate it!
This video made me talk to my wife and have a pleasant chat in a very challenging period of our mariage. Thanks Joel & Trent.
If there's anything I've picked up on from Top Gear/The Grand Tour, it's to never *ever* say the line
_"...Still, could be worse."_
These two have the greatest friendship. This is what everyone should aspire to accomplish, honestly
Damn Joel. Without a doubt you have the coolest, wholesomest, kindest, genuinest, most decentest, down to earthiest community of well-wishing subscribers/commenters than any other person with a RUclips channel I can think of. It just amazes me to no end to think that your work brings this many aforementioned people together how they so consistently just leave the nicest comments. It makes me feel good to just read them all. Thanks everyone. Sincerely. And of course thank you Joel (and friends) for creating the content that causes all this to begin with. Goodness begets more goodness I guess.... Anywhoooo....
There is something so genuine about this that I have never seen in any comedy movie or sketch. It feels like I’m actually watching two friends stuck in a room and I absolutely love it . Keep up the great work Joel!
This was actually really wholesome. Especially being stuck but not wanting to be rude by screaming out the window. 😂
I love this so much! At first I thought the dramatic need was to escape the room, and then I came to realize that maybe it's a good thing to be in the room. I'm learning that doing nothing sometimes is a great way for folks in a modern world to counteract the overstimulation of media, and I hope this film (and this comment) encourage more folks to do that. So yeah, I'm going to go do nothing now.
You really outdid yourself, Joel and Trent. I was really curious what this years film would be seeing as the last one was so actor and event-involved. There were times I forgot there was a world outside of your room and at times it didn't even matter if there was. Thanks for the change of pace on a platform that thrives on fast paced in your face content and reminding us all its not often we spend time doing nothing with our best friends and maybe we should more. Thank you guys for peeing and letting us watch.
heartwarming, thrilling, full of twists and turns, joels 2nd youtube video ever is the best one since the 1st one,( i only watch this during the oscars, i watch the grammys the rest of the year)
My brother and I used to play like this all day, sharing weird spontaneous thoughts about anything, just acting as cringy as possible just because it was fun, or wondering about life while starring at a wall, i didn't realize until now how special those moments were. Now a live alone and miss him so much. Thank you Joel and Trent, your movie brings tears to my eyes while remembering those days in which I could just do nothing without having to worry about being productive. Thanks and sorry if my English is not good
this is true friendship and I hope everyone gets a change to have something like this
This is one of those concepts that works really well as a 2 minute skit lol but somehow they stretched it out to 40 minutes haha that’s some serious talent
It’s a shame people have to be literally stranded without their phones these day in order to believably have conversations the way characters in movies do.

I'm getting the "conversations in the sauna with your bro" kinda vibes from this
The best part about this film is the way it immerses you in the situation, you're not bantering with the bros but you're still chilling, stuck in the same room, you kinda want the video to be over, and it's getting kinda long, just like you'd rather not be stuck in a room, but at the end of the day, it's kinda comfy and you can't really be bothered clicking away.
You never say something was too easy, OR could be worse, because it will always find a way to become worse.

Beautifully done. The intimacy between the two of you, letting yourselves be vulnerable both in front of each other and in front of the audience, was really inspiring. Haven’t had that kind of friendship since I was a kid, and this really made me reflect on what I’ve closed myself off from.
I've always enjoyed your skits, this is my first time taking the time to watch one of your longer videos and it was phenomenal. Just what I needed. Thank you, Joel, Trent & co
It's kind of frustrating knowing they could open the door at any time but they don't know how to.
I love this, reminds me of when me and my friends would play in our rooms as kids.
34:15 (and the window part) it's always wonderful when Trent is in these videos, he can't hide his true personality and so it's so fun to see him taking risks only to be met with full approval from Joel. He never makes him feel weird and riffs off of everything he says perfectly to make sure Trent knows that he's not weird. He's such an interesting person, I mean both of y'all are, and it's great to watch you interact. Heartwarming watching him open up in every single video with you.
Joel, I saw your animations when you were only just a small channel and I always feel guilty for not taking the time to watch your longer films, I think you're a really funny dude and it's so nice to see you blowing up in so many ways, without combusting.
This film has really given me the inspiration to not spend so much time absorbing media and to just let myself be bored sometimes, it's something I hope to stick to, so thanks to you and Trent.
The whole film really reminded me of being a kid again and just enjoying playing with a friend, I think this movie was good, just like the thing.
Really love the concept for this. Dialogue feels super real and says a lot about friendship
That gunfight was glorious. Super intense.
The locksmith part about how could it be acceptable in society and the dry land, open eyed marco-polo were 2 of my favorite parts in this. Hilarious as always!
My life has been so hectic and crowded and lonely at the same time. I’m living vicariously through this films lens. I want to be locked in a room with my best friend and just be connected and love each other for the sake of it. I know I need to be patient because being an adult is unpredictable and often isolating, but in the meantime, thank you Joel for giving me these shared moments of peace.
my chest is aching in the strangest way
The way Trent and Joel make mundanity entertaining like this and a lot of their other collaborative work is really rather impressive.
Well I was brought to tears near the end. Thanks for making this
I'm blown away at how much meaning you guys made out of so little. You captured the wholesomeness of buddy-love beautifully. I loved it.
This was just a joy to watch. No super serious story, just two friends hanging out. It's simple, and i's fun.
i loved how this is a scenario that would be played as a horror movie if it was made by some huge company, but Joel's is more focused on the calming and therapeutic aspects of not having anything to do for a day
Hey Joel, sorry I only just got around to watching this but I want to thank you for this beautiful thing you created, as well as everything else on your channel.
I’ve had a lot of change in my life this year and the titular song hit me unexpectedly and I cried out of nowhere - probably the first good cry I’ve had this year.
Even if you don’t see this I just wanted to share it how this touched me so thank you.
As many others have said, finding and connecting to you and your creations has been so refreshing and uplifting and I feel grateful to be part of your community
I really love your work. It's all so alive and so enjoyable. I love to be in the same world you create in your videos. I breathe in them. It seems like a exaggeration, but they all really do something to me so pure.
Keep the videos coming. ❤️
Such a great and simple concept, feels like I'm just hanging out with two friends desperately trying to find entertainment before a weekend ends.
This has got such good flow you guys. The dialogue and vibe, damn ❤
That first shot hit me way harder than it should've. Phillips screws are a crime against everyone with hands.

Thank you Joel and Trent this was great. Takes me back to my childhood without the pee though
I'm currently 27 minutes in and I'm having a very cosy time. There isn't much I can say other than Joel and his friends are super talented, and I am thankful that this entertainment is free and available for me. :)
I like how all of the music comes from the piano and there’s no music the characters didn’t make
It was very nice feeling joining you both in this doing nothing endeavor. I am also in my room doing "nothing". I love the honest conversations you put out but still in an entertaining way. Quiet smart I think. When I finished and saw that the video was 40 mins I was a bit surprised. It really felt much faster. I don't remember the last time I finished 30 mins of a movie. Somehow your videos a lot of the time cure loneliness in a way. Not in a sad way or anything just like feels like I am there with you in your videos. Thank you very much.
Such a strange yet intriguing film
No big twists or malicious undertones.. Just two friends stuck in a room
A realistic thing that can happen to any of us eventually (cause its happened to me before with one of my old friends)
A mix of dry and awkward humour
Really enjoyable and definitely experimental
Watched the whole thing and now I feel like im a changed person now
A great watch! thanks for this Joel & Trent!
The simplicity of this short film makes it soo good and wholesome
I want to watch a film like pulp fiction but all the actors are Trent and Joel. I could watch either of them in anything.
I don't know what it is about this one but in my biased opinion this is your best one yet. You had me sitting here for 40min while I watched two people do nothing and I liked it, well done y'all.
This is such a nice film, was great to watch your process in the live stream and how that translates into the final piece, keep being awesome Joel & Trent
Love this. Haven't watched a video to this length in one sitting in a while. Maybe I should contribute next year, because I love the idea of this contest. Making things in such a short amount of time gives them a certain charm.
This honestly has more realistic dialogue than any movie coming out today. This is so real, I can feel the connection between the characters.
