Saw Will with Bonnie Raitt back in the 70's. Great show and Will was a wonderful accompanist for her. Greetings from the country with the national key of "eh"
Kudos to you Steve for staying back even when you really want to play bad. Will is the kinda guy you grab and play with if he lets you play. God bless him.
I met Will at a Guitar Gathering a few years ago, (like 7).... I was hanging out listening to a lesson when Will strolled in, nonchalantly, he walked over to me and we started chatting. I had NO idea he was our next master class.... we had a great conversation and he was so funny. Next thing Will is on stage astonishing us and making us all laugh with stories from being on the road in the 60s... THEN the highlight of the night we had a blues jam and Will asked if he could stay... imagine playing a blues solo in Em with Will McFarlane on stage!!! What a night! Magnificent night and great man!
I finally had time to watch this incredible interaction and education by Will McFarland. I didn't comprehend all of what he said. However, that drives me and hopefully others to explore and expand our theory knowledge. Thank You!
Thanks so much! Listening to Will speak reminded me that many, many years ago Will played on the Terrance Boylan album 'Suzy'. Some very creative guitar work that enriched me greatly. Will's tune "$50 an Hour" is a standout on that record for the writing and creative acoustic playing (as always).
Can you please re-upload the episode with Will wearing that Gibson t shirt and playing a Les Paul. There were some musical nuggets in that episode. Thank you
FYI y'all, listening to this you've only heard about 10% of the info in Will's head. As a very mediocre guitar player, hanging out with Will is very cool. One of the many things Will said to me was, "You just be you, do what you do." (Regarding not being a very good musician.)
This is blues, but it's not just licks and facile playing. Both of these guys improvise with a strong narrative quality, analogous to a "story", with MELODIC point and purpose. I dig it!
Yea you can play a pentatonic scale over a blues and it will work just fine and don't get me wrong alot of great songs are just that. But there's nothing like hearing someone that really knows how to play with the changes and has a wide enough "vocabulary" to really bring out great melodic ideas like this. I love rock but some of my favorite players come from a jazz background. When the two are combined in the right way like Larry Carlton with Steely Dan or Steve Howe with Yes the results are always awesome.

That was brilliant, I haven't enjoyed a session like this as much in years.
Man, the first five minutes of this video contain some of the best guitar playing I've heard in decades! Bravo!
So glad I was able to join in person. This was a blast!
Another great Live Lesson Steve. Makes me wish I could have gone to the Gathering to see more of him. Thanks Steve, for all that you do!

You know this video isn't really about "Blues Guitar" right?
