I have watched years over thousands of music theory explanations. This is the most valuable and well taught explanation of playable notes on youtube or the near universe. Thank you for the key, good sir.
Ive watched many a Dicky Betts tutorials that talk about getting his sound, and maybe i just didnt realize it at those times, but this is the first time a lesson zeroed in right away on what I consider to be Dickey's signature sound, which is that lick. As soon as i got it under my fingers, i said that's it! Feels so good! Thank you!
Great explanation! I learned something cool today. The diminished scale moving up or down a semitone greatly simplifies WHEN to use WHAT. Robben Ford's explanation didn't sink in as easily. Thanks!
This is an outstanding guitar instruction video! I hope you do more guitar technique instructions on the styles of Duane Allman, Dickey Betts and Allen Collins!🗻🕊️🦅
I’ve been playing since I was eight years old and now 65 and I think that this video is brilliant. The thing I like to do is get some really good bite on my strings which gives you that real emotional feeling
Thanks for watching Mathew! I've also been playing 40 years! Plus I used to have a guitar academy for over a decade so I've had a ton of face to face teaching experience so you learn a lot about different types of guitar players.
I played the Mixolydian scale for years before finding out what it was. Mark Zabel once described it basically as halfway between a major and blues scale. I liked that. Basically its being melodic but with an edge. My first time seeing your channel. While I know this stuff, you're a good teacher and there's still more for me to learn, so I'm subscribing. Thanks. Keep up the good work. Edited in: I posted my comment before I got to the end, only to find out you taught me a bunch about the Diminished scale. Very cool. Thanks
Very informative! Thanks for the colorful way of showing us..Infact I was at times, picturing the different types of guitars to fly with those great tips!..Very fun examples, Thanks again!.. 🎵
Absolutely brilliant explanation!!! This puts it all together so well.. mixing in the major minor mixolydian and blues like that.. this IS what should be emblazoned so it becomes second nature.. thank you so much! Bless 🙏🕊️✨👼
Thanks for posting! I discovered Dickie Betts late in life, I’m 81. I saw the Allman Brothers in 1970, when they opened for BB King in San Francisco!. Their set was kind of short because Buddy Guy and Junior Wells were also on the bill. I had no idea who they were!!
Forget scales! All 12 notes are available to you over any Dominant 7 chords. First the tritone of 3-b7 or b7-3 are easy to find and will always be the most “inside” in a Blues with 3 Dominant 7 chords. Say the chords are A7-D7-E7; play EADGBE on frets 3-4-5-6-8-9 for A7, and all one down for D7 and all one up for E7. Those tritones are guaranteed to be the most “inside” for any Blues with 3 Dominant 7 chords. Now, to those 2 notes, start adding to them until you can find 1-2-b3/3-4-b5-5-6-b7 which is Mixolydian + the Blues scale. Even b2-b6-7 can be used in chromatic lines. - Here’s 5 CAGED chords, all E Dominant 7 on just the top 4 strings of DGBE: E7, 2130; D7-shape 2434; C7-shape, 6757; A7-shape, 9797; G7-shape, 999-10; and E7-shape again at 14-13-15-12. - Use those shapes and associate them to Mixolydian + the Blues scale. Don’t use 3 if the chord is minor, and only go UP from b3 to 3 if the chord is Dominant 7.
There's a guitarist I forget his name that uses lots of hexatonic scales and it sounds super fresh, it's almost ridiculous as it's just somewhere between the pentatonic and modal scales but I've never seen or heard anyone else focusing on them... 🤔👍
Lol rereading my comment I can now see that the blues scale is a type of hexatonic scale but it's not the one I'm referring to but it's a great example of the importance an extra note can make..!
So I do need to put more work into my scales. I tend to play randomly up and down the neck, finding things I like. But I might find more if I knew what I was doing. Giving it names, however, just confuses me lol...
Hi John Thanks for watching It is a custom built Gene Baker. Gene is a great guitar builder. This one is similar to the kind that Robben Ford uses, So it is chambered but with no F - holes www.b3guitars.com/
You’re playing a Baker? How do you like that guitar? I became aware of them years ago in a gtr magazine- gorgeous guitars! I may get one for myself one day
That’s right - this is one of my favorite guitars. Gene Baker gave me a deal on it when i was a touring musician. In fact- it got stolen from the tour bus and Police ended up finding it in pawn shop and it came back to me!
Any chance of a lesson on positive and negatives in all scales relationships ? Thought not Cannot fimd one either on any youtube post oh never mind most wont umferstand with how many sides a coin have ? Answer 3 Or the tree effect ? Or question and answer technique? Sad but true No wonder the progression of guitar relates to 60s andd 70s in a whole . Or past down by a family member Like the van halen family
Dickey Betts "was," a great guitar player? Last time i checked he was still playing, perhaps not as fluent as he once was, but he still sounds good in my book. Just saying... nonetheless good tutorial. What guitar rig are you using? What reverb/delay?
Sorry no bad intentions to ypurself as you are doing your bit and is wise. But comon why mix mixolydian in a minor progression without going through dorian first ? I get why the flattened 7th of both scales related
Well spotted haha! Yes I grew up in the UK. But Rob - the pianist in Everglades Rhythm (and Executive Producer) is passionate about the Everglades and used to spend summers down there. ✨
Ha! I am working on a shadows style record, so that is the rig I am using at the moment. So I just get used to that sound. But I will do a straight amp for the next video. Thanks for the feedback!
Your videos would be much more helpful if you (1) had close up views of your fretting hand, or (2) guitar tab or (3) played the licks slowly. But thanks for what offer. I guess.
Yes sir, I hear you. These videos just take a long time already, and I have a full time job and a family! So I do what I can:) But- noted. I'll do what I can.
The magic happened for me after years of playing rhythm ,when I could finally jam.along in lead with another guy playing rhythm and telling me what key he was going to play in .And I just slotted straight I filling in with lead .
This helpful lesson would be greatly enhanced Without the delay effect. Students need to hear the clarity & articulation of the specific notes. Using so much Delay & Reverb are a crutch, & it only sounds sloppy & thin.
I have watched years over thousands of music theory explanations. This is the most valuable and well taught explanation of playable notes on youtube or the near universe. Thank you for the key, good sir.
Wow, thanks! That means a lot Robert.
One of the most watchable, useful and unpatronising lead guitar videos I’ve seen.. excellent stuff.
Wow, thanks! I appreciate your feedback David.
I couldn't agree more! So good.
Yeah, but turn the delay off!
Thank you!
That's awesome! So glad to hear it.
Thank you. This lesson really helped me understand how the various scales and modes can be integrated into seamless, tasty licks.
Exactly. So glad you liked it.
Great explanation! I learned something cool today. The diminished scale moving up or down a semitone greatly simplifies WHEN to use WHAT. Robben Ford's explanation didn't sink in as easily. Thanks!
Thanks John. Glad you found it helpful.
Great tribute to Dicky Betts.
Yep, that's what I hoped it would be.
You are a great teacher!
Glad you think so! Thanks🎸
Magic happens when you feel what u play in the moment.
Agreed!
Enjoyed the lesson very much and I believe it will be a big help. Thanks
Glad to hear it:)
Amazing demonstration of guitar magic, thank you
My pleasure! Thank you.

Absolutely, I love that too. So glad you like the channel!
Dicky Betts played a lot of Major pentatonic notes. That was his sound, plus adding the 4th interval.
Yes, he was the master of that wasn't he! His phrasing was amazing, sometimes his licks sound like bluegrass on steroids!
Major hexatonic scale 1-2-3-4-5-6
Hexatonic!
Nice ramble. Great tone. Excellent playing.
Thank you much.
40 year player, just discovered your channel. I love the way you break things down. This is awesome! Thank you so much.

That’s awesome. I would’ve loved to been at that show.
What guitar is that? Sounds amazing! 🤤
It's a Gene Baker guitar - custom:) It's chambered like a Gibson but with no F holes.
@@evergladesrhythm what model? Just a GB custom?
Don't understand the theory but love the sounds.....
Well I'll take that as a good thing! This ones is a bit of a deep dive. Some of my other vids might be easier to track with. Glad you're here!

You talk of the mix, Illian scale as a traveler on a yacht. I still am rowing.
Keep going!
Thanks
You're welcome!
Thank you. Something to play around with. Maybe I can develop this into something.
Definitely! Thanks James.

That goes ditto for me!
🤪
More on screen tabs would be great.
Yes, I will try, I will post some in the community tab too.
You can tell Joe Bonamassa uses the mixolydian scale quite a bit. Those notes stand out when you first hear it.
Yes true!
It’s just converting the muscle memory to reality I’m hitting 70 playing 50 years. Still trying to get it.
It’s going to feel great when you get it. It’s a journey- keep playing!
So I do need to put more work into my scales. I tend to play randomly up and down the neck, finding things I like. But I might find more if I knew what I was doing. Giving it names, however, just confuses me lol...

Thank you John. Unfortunately my years teaching one-on-one are over. I do this channel as a side gig to my Media Producer day job:)

What key is the major pentatonic scale?
Any where you start .it's movable up and down the neck .
Yep. Thanks John.
Son House's Death Letter has a haunting resonance with me personally after having to go identify my partner of 20 years at the morgue, December 2022.
Wow I'm so sorry. Haunting indeed.
You don’t sound like you are from the Everglades! lol!😊
Well spotted haha! Yes I grew up in the UK. But Rob - the pianist in Everglades Rhythm (and Executive Producer) is passionate about the Everglades and used to spend summers down there. ✨
That’s great! I live in Glades County Florida. We are about 45 minutes from the Northern edge of the Everglades. Great lessons, thank you!
First question. Why do you need all those effects to instruct a guitar lesson. Please. Common man.
He’s a guitar player, he gets to use whatever effects he wants.
