    Colin Hay has a sincerity in his singing that can't be ignored. It's the soul of a true artist. Here it was just a snippet of a song yet I was deeply moved.
    Joe Bonamassa is a true Olympic athlete on the fret board and I would love to have that skill yet I'm never moved by his playing.
    As for Larry Carlton. Well, He's a master musician, plain and simple. He's got the skill that very few have and the soul to move anyone with the heart to hear.

      I fully agree with your assessment of Bonamassa. I don't find his playing interesting at all; it does nothing for me. I mean he knows his pentatonic scales and does all the stock licks, has technique and speed but how cares? It sounds so generic and uninteresting. There's a huge gulf when comparing his part of this clip with Larry Carlton's.

      @philsarkol6443 2 года назад

      You have written exactly what I had in mind; in that order. The honesty and sincerity of Colin Haye in his performing this song "Overkill", of wich I thought was titled "Night after night"..and mr. Larry Carlton who has this way of playing and the sound, with his heart and soul, down to earth man I admire and respect greatly!! (As for the show-off..no soul, no blues on a big jazzer..olympic medal for runnin up and down the stairs)

    • @mrfester42
      @mrfester42 2 года назад

      @@philsarkol6443 Right! ,,, except I wouldn't go so far as to call Bonamassa a show off. In fact, I think the opposite is true.
      The feeling I get when he plays is that he's turned totally inward. Maybe that's why his playing sounds so flat and uninteresting. He's just conversing with himself in his own language.
      All the musicians that I would call great have a heart that has something to say and a "soul" that wants to connect with others and be heard with a language that everybody understands.
      All the great ones, no matter how reserved and humble they are when not playing, are just aching to connect with the world and THAT is what we hear.

    After looking at the comments I see I'm not alone in thinking that Laurence Huber playing 'In my life' is absolutely incredible. To stand out amongst all the other talent speaks for itself. Full of emotion and pure raw talent. Have to mention Fletcher and Smith playing together too. Made those strats sound like Tele's to me.

      Makes me sometimes wonder if The Beatles ever realized at the height of Beatle mania , the impact their songs will have on the world and how they will influence and inspire musicians for many many years to come?

    For more than 30 years, I thought "Overkill" was a nice 80s pop tune from "That Australian Band." For the first time in my life, I heard Colin sing it the way he actually wrote it, and ... epiphany: it is a heartbreaking love song. Bravo, Colin.
