  • Xcalibur at Six Flags St. Louis is a rare Evolution flat ride. There are only 5 remaining. Built by Ronald Bussink, Xcalibur was closed for the entire 2018 and 2019 seasons for an extended refurbishment.
The ride is currently missing from the website and it's future is in doubt.

I love how the background music usually fits the theme of the ride you're reviewing (if it has one) like the medieval music for Xcalibur, western music for western theme rides like Diamond Back at Frontier City or Range)

I rode this at SFGAdv a long time ago. I wondered what happened to it - I started to think I was actually just dreaming it up because no one else remembers it. Thanks for solving the mystery. 👍🏼😎

I rode this in Rimini in 1997. I don't know if it's still the case, but at the time the operator's cabin had inverted windows (like those of a Control Tower of an airport) and the operator had a hose to wash away vomit. I can confirm that the review is thorough and true in each detail, but I'd like to add that the slowing down part of the ride (starting from 9 o'clock) is where most people have troubles. I clearly remember the sudden slowing down as a sideway kick in my stomach which triggered nausea (like being suddenly transported in a spinning cup and probably enhanced because it's when you are relaxing all your muscles) and it was then when I saw some of my fellow riders puking their insides out. As I left, the operator was retrieving her hose. Before being moved to Six Flags, the ride stayed in Rimini's Mirabilandia with the name Evolution only for two years, but to this date, if you talk to anyone who has visited the park in those two years, chances are that the ride's fame will still echo in their words.

I got to ride this in 2016 and 2020 both times I went to Six Flags St. Louis and this ride was great because of that dizzy sensation that it gave you

I also got to ride this for the first time in the summer of 2020! It was a lot fun and different but for me the best thrill factor came from when you're coming back down from the 12 o'clock position. It really feels like your gondola is going hit the supports, giving a rare "head-chopper" moment on a flat ride.

I remember when this was at great adventure the only one time I got to ride it opening week with Medusa also opening along with a whole bunch of new flat rides in the 1999 season evolution being one of them. I thought it was pretty cool cause it really does disoriented u as u go up or down but I do recall the arm of the ride would stop at the top and the the spinning portion of the ride would come to a slow down enough for the gondolas to come down making riders face inward at each other 131 feet in the air for a few seconds before picking up speed again to make the return trip back down once the ride hits its maximum speed. They probably took this feature out due to how long it took to load the ride already as it is but it was enjoyable but wouldn’t wait in a long line for it when it was ever open. I miss jumping jack flash that was at great adventure they should have kept that one that was the one of the two most popular flat rides that season that was an intense ride.

I wish this stopped at the top so you could feel the ride build up the rotational speed again.

It saddens me to no end that, the one year that I had a season pass at Great Adventure (back when I was single and could be selfish like that), Evolution was there but never ran on a day I visited. I never got to ride that one before it moved to St. Louis.
I have ridden a Fabbri version that was at Casino Pier at Seaside Heights NJ (though I can't find any YT videos). I liked that it had multiple revolutions, but it was slower than what I see from Xcalibur. Also, the cars could be frozen in place by the ride operator; the last revolution always had the cars frozen so you'd be upside-down as you went over the top. Sadly, that version hasn't been at Casino Pier for some time ... but at least it wasn't a victim of Superstorm Sandy, as it was gone before that storm hit.

As a kid I ride a Fabbri Evolution at the OC Fair when it was there (I think it only operated in that specific fair for a season?) and HOLY CRAP that was intense. I believe Six Flags toned toned down this version and Bussink were notably less intense than the Fabbri variation. Being held upside down or facing the ground like in the flying position at the max height is still probably one of the scariest moments for me on any ride!
