  • Six Flags St. Louis was one of the three original Six Flags parks. Opening as Six Flags Over Mid-America in 1971, this park is known as the Gateway to Thrills. This park has 9 roller coasters, several notable non-coasters, and a better atmosphere than most parks in the chain. So is it the most underrated park in the chain? Find out in this review!

Before my visit, all I had heard about SFStL was how it was neglected by Six Flags. What I found was a well-shaded park in a gorgeous setting with some awesome thrill rides. It's far from the best Six Flags park, and desperately needs a signature coaster, but it's very underrated for what it offers.

I visited the park in last December, and I absolutely agree that the park is the most underrated SF park! Absolutely beautiful landscaping, lots of TLC around the park, friendly staff, and the HITP event was amazing. In terms of the new ride, 2022 will probably be their big year. Freespin/Raptor for the old Tidal Wave plot of land, or RMC Boss. Then we can later expect a flat replacement for the rides leaving this year.

My first legal job at 15 in 2003. The office for my games section was in the game area at the exit of Screaming Eagle. Less than 500ft from the track and there was technically no back wall, just an awning they could let down if it rained. So every time Eagle came by it would shake and make the deafening noise. I know firsthand they take good care of the ride but since it is so old and we were right there you can see how much the whole frame shakes as the trains go by.
The Boss was so smooth the year it opened. My friends had season passes so I got in as a guest and we went at least once a week that year. You would have no idea now.
When I was a kid the Battle for Metropolis thing was Castaway Kids, and then Scooby Doo. I haven't ridden it since It was Scooby Doo but they kept in the bats in the ceiling at the end from Injun Joe's, what it was when my mom was a kid going to the park. I wonder if they are still there.
Batman is my favorite coaster in the park.
While many of us who have grown up with the park always have love for it, we mourn what it used to be. A lot of bad management and investments as well as just mismanaging money ran it down, hard. I had a weird ride situation and often had to be dropped off two hours before my shift at 6am. I would be allowed to wait in the main office and whew boy, the things I heard when they thought I was listening to headphones.

I'm happy to see you giving credit to this park for what it is. Some people like to trash on it just because it's not an elite park, but it's still a good park. I have enjoyed my visits here, and it's a convenient stop on my road trips that take me through St Louis. I made 3 pit stops here in 2019 for less than 2 hours each time. I only rode Ninja each time, because the park was slammed, even on a Tuesday, with huge lines (except on Ninja). I was wondering if the light crowds I saw in 2016-2018 were a thing of the past. Six Flags St. Louis not having a kiddie coaster was literally the catalyst for me to get over my fear of coasters back in 2007 on my first visit there. I find this park to have very good rides and it’s well taken care of maintenance wise, but operationally it could definitely use help, particularly in the foods department. But with the staffing situation plaguing parks everywhere, it’s understandable that there is problems. Also I’ve heard their rides department has their fair share of issues too. Worlds of Fun actually has the best rides department of any Missouri park. Like Worlds of Fun’s rides department has amazing management, great supervisors, and great leadership. I went a short little weekend-vacation trip to St. Louis this weekend, and since it had been ages since I had visited a theme park, I was sure to visit SFSL while I was there. And I have to agree with you, it's very underrated. As I am from Milwaukee I have visited SFGA a number of times, and while it's true that they have a lot more standout roller coasters, I personally found the hour-long wait time for a majority of them to be unbearable. It was so refreshing when I realized how short most of the lines at SL are, I was able to score a ride on Mr. Freeze less than 20 minutes after I stepped foot into the park. As I am also a rail enthusiast, I also appreciated that the steam locomotive that runs on their scenic railway is the real deal, and one of the staff members allowed me to blow the engine's whistle. I feel like a lot of coaster enthusiasts only rank parks by how many coasters they have, which is a shame as SFSL isn't the first theme park I personally really enjoy that gets shafted by a lot of enthusiasts (The other being Valleyfair in Shakopee, Minnesota). Is SL the biggest Six Flags park? No, but bigger isn't always better. If I ever go to St. Louis again I'd love to give the park another visit.

I have purchased a season pass for this year, but I haven't been there for several years. I can't wait to revisit it time and time again this year. The Boss and Batman are my top two coasters there, although I haven't been on Mr. Freeze since they reversed it. I am looking forward to checking that out. I have to say XCalibur ranks as one of my favorite rides there. Tom's Twister was a fun ride while it made you stick to the wall as it went in circles. I don't think it is still there. I do enjoy the Ninja, although I wouldn't be mad if they took it out and replaced it with a better coaster. It looks like the Raptor would be pretty great.

Ive been going to 6 flags st louis since I was a kid and I was severely disappointed when they took out the bumper cars for the boomerang. Over the years its seemed to loose its old school carnival feel for a newer sterile feel and it makes me sad. The small games like the rc cars and boats and the more dense greenery disappearing along with things like the old swings and bumper cars for more concrete just irks me.

Couldn't agree more. And replacing the rush street flyer with fireball is just a slap in the face. Personally, fireball is a waste of space and very boring, I don't even bother with it when I see the traveling versions at carnivals. Skye screamer is fine, but the swings were a step up for smaller kids that was taken away. I also think the highland fling is better that the supergirl ride there now. Will always miss Tom's twister and Castaway kids too!
Overall, the empty store fronts, worn down exteriors, old rides that have been neglected and watered down and the lack of shows now...it just isn't what it used to be. I'm holding out the fright fest will be okay but not getting my hopes up.
Side note: we took our kiddos this past weekend and hurricane harbor had most slides closed. My kids got a rash that our pediatrician suspects may be sand mite bites and the chlorine in the wave pool resulted in a mild chemical burn to my eye. So definetly not visiting hurricane harbor again sadly. It used to be the best! Miss the bucket

I went to Six Flags St. Louis for the first time earlier this year in July, to celebrate graduating from high school, and I had a blast there. I enjoyed all the coasters there, especially Mr. Freeze. Launching backwards at 70mph is something everyone needs to experience, it was indescribably thrilling. The Batman is another good coaster, it basically has no straight sections outside of the initial lift hill, and once it drops off that hill it is a non-stop barrage of twists and turns and loops, it was super intense and super fun. The park was busy but not crowded when I went their and even at the height of the day the longest waits were an only an hour which I thought was fine. The park was immaculately clean and well maintained when I was there, I never saw any trash or signs of neglect there. The parks location is really great, the Ozarks are a beautiful region of wooded rolling hills, and that makes it easy for the park to look good, because nature does half the work for them. If you wanna visit a theme park in Missouri Six Flags St. Louis is a great choice, it's got a great location and some really good coasters.

I heard from many that it was a concrete jungle but I found it to actually be the nicest looking six flags park out of the 7 I've been to. I also thought the coaster exceeded expectations. Boss and Mr Freeze were both 9/10 for me with Batman and American thunder being fantastic supporting coasters. However, I there were some things that hindered my day. Coaster dispatches and ops were beyond awful and when the park was slammed for Easter weekend it meant 40min waits for rides that at a cedar fair park it would be 10min. Food ops were awful as well. It took 1hr to get food as locations were full up on the dining plan and I remember not even liking the food items I got. I still enjoyed my day though.

I went as a kid many years ago, and I went back in 2020 and spent a few hours at the park on my way to Silver Dollar City. For me SFSL needs a standout coaster. I found that Boss, Screaming Eagle, American Thunder, Mr Freeze, and Batman are all great supporting coasters. The park needs to either RMC Boss or better yet give this park a RMC Raptor, which would allow the park to keep all of those supporting coasters. I did feel that the setting was better than some SF parks. I would say it is underrated but I think Over Georgia is the most underrated Six Flags park. Their roller coaster line-up is really good and I feel they have the standout top 2 in Twisted Cyclone and Goliath.
