I've played this countless times to my son when he was just a baby. He is now 10. Today I have written him a small letter, has he becomes a teen, and stops listening to his old man, it's important for him to know that my love for him is forever. There is nothing, other than this song, that would express my feeling better.
Judy sings this song ,which so precisely expresses a heart in love, and it's obvious she owns it because her own heart has been there. How I wish that I could have been the one to reciprocate and provide her that safe, secure and strong love that she needed.
WOW, I've loved this song since I was 14 yr old by anybody and everybody. I must say, Thank you, Judy Garland, your version is the most heartwarming, emotional, tear jerking one yet. Again, out of the ballpark!
Judy Garland can sing any song... she has such a tremendous talent. She can sing a newspaper article and it can land in a Broadway musical. There are times she narrates the lyrics but they still have a melody. She is a fantastic dancer her feet can execute any dance number like a breeze. Dancing seems a natural body movement to her. And boy she is naturally and contagiously funny, her punchlines are perfect. JUDY GARLAND IS THE BEST AND GREATEST PERFOMER OF ALL TIMES!!!
You hit the mark Edna... thank you... Judy embodied music all by herself... she not only sang the songs... she always lived them. Her vocal was an extension of her soul and her verbal voice. Thank you The Universe for the marvelous genius in every aspect of her fabulous life ! Hats off and down to my knees !
Judy was a great artist. Her ending was swift and tragic after the completion of her TV series. Within five short years, Judy ended up homeless in New York City. She was ill, broke, drug and alcohol addicted. She went from being one of the top show business personalities in the early 1960s to an unemployable pariah by the end of the decade. Her musical arrangements had been swiped and held for blackmail. She was unable to pay to get them back. David Begelman, her manager, did not end up homeless. Judy made over ten million dollars in the early 1960s and never saw a penny of it. David Begelman stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from Judy. Sid Luft, her former husband, did not end up homeless. Sid Luft gambled away hundreds of thousands of dollars and did not pay the IRS. Judy ended up in severe debt to the IRS and every dollar she earned later in life was confiscated by the government. Judy was ill with cirrhosis of the liver in 1968 when she jetted off to London to play The Talk of the Town. She was also ill with influenza and had to perform. She did her best in London and later in Scandinavia. The only good thing was that the IRS could not touch her earnings or hound her in England. Judy paid her own way to the very bitter end. Her last "husband" Mickey Deans was a delusional gay user. He was Judy's keeper, more than a husband. She was so ill at that time she could barely function. Judy had a strange life. She worked like a dog and supported her mother, father, sisters, and later her husband(s), her children, and her agents and managers. None of these people ever supported her or helped her. They just helped themselves till there was nothing left.
Her life reminds me a bit of the Bette Davis movie "The Star". She was the best, and it's sad that she wasn't able to get the help she needed earlier in life.
You know, PBS would be doing the public a great service if they repeated this series on Saturday evenings (like Mr. Welk). My parents were riveted to the sofa whenever Miss Garland was on TV, especially this '63-'64 series. Sid Luft had the tapes carefully stored and remastered...they're ready to dub to digital and air! I still tear up whenever I hear most versions of the song-the lyrics get to me each and every time.
Aloha to you Armin !!!! Thanks so much for your kind and sincere thoughts . Yes, I am doing fine and I wish I could have met Judy Garland in person. Her songs and movies and her kind deeds to and for others show me that she's so loving !!!!! She's a great mentor to me and for younger people who want to make a positive difference in life. Take care Armin and God bless !!!! Robert May 18, 2021.
Judy almost blew the 1st line of the last verse and it's obvious she was reading the lyrics from cue-cards. But, I don't think I've ever heard it sung better. Ms Garland was truly amazing.
As great as Judy's deeply emotive vocalizing was, as of this song, on RUclips see Dorothy Dandridge's parallel sui generis lovely cover of "That's All."
oh my gosh... me too! i was in high school when i found Music Til Dawn... got a new AM-FM table top radio for my 14th birthday so I could listen to Music til Dawn at night until I would doze off!
Who are the five that don't like this. First time of hearing it. What a great song. And a great interpretation. Will look out for Nat king Cole's version. Love his voice especially on A nightingale sang. Thank you.
I think she did turn that lyric around a bit; but of course, it doesn't really matter ... I think only Nat King Cole comes close to the kind of passion that Judy Garland expresses in song.
have always been a judy fan....and judy did a great job with this song...but i have not heard a version that compared to edie adams version on the season ender for the lucy-desi omedy hour....
an absolutely beautiful song for a wedding...life is all about the creation of special moments and experiences....god bless all the best n mny happy years of bliss..
I believe that Edie's version of "That's all" was specially emotional not only because it was the last episode of Lucy-desi comedy hour, but also because we now know that at that time the song was very touching for Lucy.
One of the very best standards out there and Nat King Cole did it well, Sarah Vaughan did it really well, Frank Sinatra did it exceptionally well. My two favorite versions though are by Mel Tormé and Judy Garland. Though this is just outstanding, and Judy is hundreds of times the singer Mel is (she’s the greatest there ever was), I have to admit I slightly prefer Mel’s smooth, sweet version the most. Still, I love every note of this, damn near makes me cry. There’s only one Judy and they broke the mold when she was created. Nobody like her.
It is interesting what Judy does with the lyrics in the final verse; She sings "If you're asking in return what I would want, dear, You'll be glad to know that my requests are small.", instead of "If you're WONDERING WHAT I'M asking in return, dear, You'll be glad to know that my REQUESTS are small" . I wonder if these are special lyrics that music arranger, Mel Torme, came up with for her, or if she just slipped and made a remarkable recovery.
it's a slip and recovery - you can sort of see her checking the cue cards in other places --- but she does do a marvelous job of recovering, doesn't she?
Of course one cannot fault this, but only enjoy n' respect it. There is no best, except of course we what each decide for ourselves what we enjoy the most. Sarah Vaughan's treatment of this tune on her early 70s recording "Live In Japan" is just extraordinary, albeit a different take. Sarah had sung this as a ballad much as well, but her up tempo approach is also stunning. Better than Ms.Garland or Mr. Cole? No. = but different. I'd leave a link but did not find it on youTube.
It's usually a jazz standard and sung with a bit of a jazz groove. Not here. She sings it in a halting way - because she's telling you something - not just singing a song. That's what made her a rarity.
@delux2222 It reall doesn't matter. It's very appropriate. Many singers change a few lyrics somewhat. It personalizes the song to the singer. Streisand incorporated a whole new verse into her version of "Send in the Clowns" that no one else sings. :) It's all about part of styling and originality. :)
did she mess up the lyrics? I thought it was "if you're wondering what I'm asking in return, dear"? Please, die hard Judy fans, please don't rip me to shreds for asking this question haha!! I'm just so used to singing that line in THAT way instead of Judy's.
@Irishcolleen110253 "When Barbra began working on [Send in the Clowns], she ... wanted to return to [the bridge]. But as an actress, it felt odd to repeat the lyric. [S]he ask[ed] Steve [Sondheim] if he would write an additional lyric for the second bridge...he said yes". (The Broadway Album's liner notes)
This was a nice episode because it reunited Judy with Ray Bolger. I amnot a Ray Bolger fan but it was great when they sang some of the songs from The Wizard of Oz.. Too bad they didnt get Jack Haley & Bert Lahr to join her. I read that in 1963 the woman who played Auntie Em commited suicide by placing a bag over her head and suffocated herself. She supposedly had terminal Cancer she was in her 80's. She looked old in the film.
With all due respect, I don't think Edie Adams owns this song. I find her version rather too saccharine, too cutesy. In this version, Judy Garland adds soul and passion to the song.
Czasem myślę sobie, że Judy powinna żyć zamiast mnie. Ale to może nie byłoby fair wobec moich wspaniałych rodziców. Zresztą sama Judy z pewnością nie chciałaby żyć za kogoś...
No definitely not Dali , you could probably find the info in MEl TOrme's book Under the Rainbow which is pretty much a blow by blow of the Judy Garland show. Idid read it and would have remembered if Dali was involved as I was a big fan.
Judy was and still is the greatest theatrical singer who has ever lived.
What a great bridge this song has...
I've played this countless times to my son when he was just a baby. He is now 10. Ladies and gentleman, the incomparable Judy Garland…RIP Judy. You are loved.
No one can make a song her own like this dame!
WOW, I've loved this song since I was 14 yr old by anybody and everybody. I must say, Thank you, Judy Garland, your version is the most heartwarming, emotional, tear jerking one yet. Again, out of the ballpark!

Judy Garland- all-around world champion performer of all times. She went down into history of the whole human kind. Treasure of the world.
Man she nailed this standard. What a talent and her work is for the ages.
Ms. Judy at her finest a true American experience. Bless her!

You know what? It's Judy Garland. She can sing it any damn way she pleases! lol
"Judy has the heart larger than all our hearts put together""- once said June Allyson- an actress, the great friend of Judy.

FYI The Get Tv channel shows the Judy Garland Show and other gems like it.
Fuck the past and its intolerably racist self.
You said it!
Stunning.
Lordy. What a magician. Every time she sang it was like a magic trick. That voice, that amazing unique voice.
a performance worthy of tears. so gorgeous. rest her soul.
You Judy Garland are a great singer !!!!!!! R I P !!!!!! You are God's gift to the world. Gratefully, Robert S.J. Hu May 7, 2020.

An angel 🙏🎶🎶
Amazing voice. This woman was a gift to the world!
She looks great here!!
How can you Not ADORE Judy!❤
My fav song by the late Judy Garland.
Gorgeous song sung by an incomparable talent!
Wonderful. She could put you in the palm of her hand. That's talent:)
Pure talent
undeniably miss garland...a triumph.. always ...that's all...
My favorite..There will NEVER be another Judy or someone who sings so effortlessly with such emotion. XO Thanku for this clip!
Yes it's like you can't teach this quality. I've often wondered if she ever had a singing lesson cause it's like she was just born with it.
As great as Judy's deeply emotive vocalizing was, as of this song, on RUclips see Dorothy Dandridge's parallel sui generis lovely cover of "That's All."
RIP
There are no words....
A perfect voice coming from a broken heart. Judy had it all just couldn't stay still long enough to notice.
A wonderful and true comment.
This is my favorite song and i love to hear her sing it!!
That just blew my head off
A lovely, highly talented, classy lady........and then there's Liza! Both Hollywood Royalty. Thx for sharing Ms. Bell!
oh my gosh... me too! i was in high school when i found Music Til Dawn... got a new AM-FM table top radio for my 14th birthday so I could listen to Music til Dawn at night until I would doze off!
Wonderful talent.
This is beautiful music.
Brilliant.
Beautiful
Edie kovitz sang this on the Lucy Desi hour
Absolutely beautiful !!!!
her acting talent on display in the last phrases
Love Frances Gumm 👠💛💋

Edie Adams version gives me goose bumps! Great singer

The fact that this question isn't clearly answered, is in itself a part of her remarkable artistry. The meaning and spontaneity are so fully there.
it's a slip and recovery - you can sort of see her checking the cue cards in other places --- but she does do a marvelous job of recovering, doesn't she?
@@Marcel_Audubon I think it's this kind of thing which keeps the music alive. A lyric change isn't a crime, after all…
impressive indeed!!!!!!!!
Simply beautiful!
Hermosa versión!
Beautiful 💙
@delux2222 plus she also changes "will warm the winter's night" to "will warm you through the night," which i also prefer
Dam!!!😭
Indeed, the very same set she used when she sang "Hello Dali!"
... the crowd went wild and melted the clock right off the all.
That's all.
@delux2222 I honestly think "requests" sounds better than "demands"...just my humble opinion
how beautiful. can't decide between her version and mel torme's. maybe it's the song which makes the singer in this case
americanfellow could be. I'm a massive Judy fan but I've never heard a version of this song I don't like....well not yet anyway.

Yes, I think she messed it up a little, but she did a great job coming up with some lyrics on the spot to fix her mistake
