- Wrapped the door panels with faux leather on a 2006 Lexus IS250 to cover the sticky doors. These cars have developed sticky doors and dash over time. Should be the same for the IS350 and ISF. Do this at your own risk. I am not an expert, just trying to make my panels not rub off on my fingers.
As soon I saw your video went to Amazon and but everything I need to do this DIY. I did my two front doors yesterday. It took me 4 hours my doors looks brand new no more cracks no more stains on my hands and clothes. Thanks 😊 for sharing your with us. 😉
Right on! Glad it worked out for you. I’ve heard from a few people who have done it... it’s not too hard, just takes a little patience!
Do you mind sharing the link for the leather you purchase on Amazon?
Just did one door took about 2hours but looks great. I followed your process 100% and it turned out great. Thank you much.
This is the best solution to the sticky pannels I've ever seen. Sadly I don't have the time to do it on my IS. But congrats and thanks for sharing. This is awesome.
Fantastic D.I.Y. I've been looking for this exact video for a long time. Thank you for your time and effort.
Sure thing bud! I managed to pull it off while the wife and kids were at Grandma’s house. Be sure to tuck everything! If it’s not tucked enough, it will come out! The first one I did was in the back so I could experiment and not have to look at it... let’s just say I need to do it again. It’s coming apart lol. The rest are great though.
Use steam to make the material more pliable throughout the process.also making proper relief cuts around corners make the hard to do spots easier
this video is exactly what ive been looking for. i plan on wrapping my doorpanels white. thank u for the video it was very helpful
Thanks for the support. Good luck, and check the comments for a few helpful tips from some folks.
Hi Jonton thanx for this clip. The detail you go into is excellent. Often theres not enough detail & you're left filling in the dots, NO, thanks for the gr8 detail you went into with this fix-Cheers
Thanks for the video!
I have the same issue with my 2007 IS 250 and I'm debating on doing this for mine. The job you did looks great I'm wondering how it has held up since you last installed it?
apolstry tips, boiling leather before hand makes it much more flexible, heating it up a bit should help get it to that hard to reach spot, also contact cement works wonders because it doesntcare what surface its on it sticks to itself
Sweet, man! I'm trying this next weekend! Thank you for the video.
Right on! Be patient and good luck bud!
That's a pretty good job. I have the same issue with my dash and door panels so will look into getting this done as labour is cheap where I live.
Thank you! Use the strongest glue you can find!
That looks so much better than the nasty old panels!
Thanks man!!! I’ve been trying to look all over for a solution for this crap definitely trying this. Was this hard to do? And how did you take off the door panels and all the door handles and stuff?
Appreciate the positive feedback bud! It wasn’t super difficult but the first one you do will probably suck. After you get the hang of it, it goes pretty smooth. As for the door panel removal, I just watched someone else on RUclips do that video.
Ive been thinking about this for about a year. Thanks for this.
Looks nice! I surely wouldn't be able to do this. There is a company called thinskinz who make door covers, but need more requests for is250 models to put it into production. It literally just snaps on.
I got the same problem but mine look even worse tbh. I don’t know how this happens?? Mine literally look like a tiger was biting/clawing on it while somebody was also stabbing at it with a screwdriver, like what. Great video though man!
Thanks man!!! I was looking for a solution for this crap for a long time and I came across your video, I’m definitely doing this. Was it hard to take the door panel off cause I’m really not sure how to do that
came out really good hope mine does not develop this issue but if it does I'm going to be following in your footsteps sir
This is amazing! Def trying this out! How many yards exactly did you buy for all 4 panels?
Thanks bud! I bought 2 yards from Hobby Lobby and I have enough to redo two of them if I need to. When it’s sold by the yard I think it’s like 54” wide or so. The yard is the length. I did the back doors first and I really messed up my cuts on that one so I’ll probably give it a do over eventually. Even with bad cuts it at least covers the black tar that won’t get on my kid’s hands.
Thanks for posting your video! I hope the stickiness doesn't seep through your vinyl leather.
neat!, gotta try this sometime.
Thanks! It’s not too difficult. Just takes a while to get everything lined up and the cuts right. The first one took the longest at about 3 hours then the next ones were around 2 hours each.
This look great!!!
Thanks... Give it a try! Let me know if you need any advise. That car was just totaled so I’m sure I’ll have to do the door panels again when I get the next one.
Any updates on it? I'm going to do mine also. I'm going to use a floral pattern leather if it'll work
I know Lexus IS are known for their sticky dashboards as well. How did you deal with that?
Did a great job.
Thanks!
Great job...good job 👍
NinjaNarutoJapan thanks bud! It looks ok... if I had to do it again, I would use a slightly thinner and more stretchy material to get around the curves better.
GREAT JOB 👍👍👍👍
Goodness. Amazing work! Can the same be done for the dashboard?
Thank you! I have seen the dash wrapped in another video. I didn’t want to do it myself because I didn’t want to make provisions for the passenger airbag that needs to come out of the dash. There is a molded plastic kit for a company called Coverlay. It’s expensive but easy to install and looks nice in the pictures.
@@jontonluvwonton8782 I live in a country where we drive on the right side. So I doubt coverlay has what I need for the dash. Anyway, I used a leather/vinyl repair kit to “paint” the soft touch material and it’s holding up alright. Can consider that if you wish to work on your dash.
Wish you were in Little Rock
WOW THANK YOU ! Genius !
Appreciate the love! Yeah I had built subwoofer boxes in high school and this is the same process for glueing the carpet onto the box. It’s still holding up pretty good after a month in the Texas sun, but if I have to do it again I would use a stronger glue.
jonton LUVwonton Oh! Wow. I’m planning to do the same by watching your video step by step. Because here in Dubai to repair it in the garage cost a lot ! So you have any idea which other glue should I be using instead of the spray ? Since you said you would use a stronger glue.
Tz Sein ive been looking around for a better glue alternative that isn’t super expensive. Someone recommended Weldwood trim adhesive but it’s hard to find and coats over $100 USD for a can of it. It isn’t a spray. I have wondered about some liquid cement but I think it may breakdown the sticky part of the panel... you may just get a few types of adhesive available in your area and try them out on small areas of the panel.
Alright thanks! I found a glue which is good that goes with rubber & leather. I’ll see the result and let you know. The name of the glue is called Fevicol... anyway before I start I wanted to ask you if I remove the door panel. Will I be able to open the door from the outside ? Because I don’t have a private place to park my car coz I live in apartment. So I’ll have to remove the door and take it with me. Is it fine if I close the door and go up ? Or the door has to be opened ? Sorry for asking lots of question. 🤦🏻♂️
Tz Sein no worries man... the door still works from the outside. The windows won’t work without the switch connected on the door though. And it will still open from the inside if you tug on the cable that used to connect to the inside handle
Looks great bro, did you do the dashboard?
Sean Gordon nope... I’m sitting here looking at my sticky chunky dashboard now. Looks really bad. To wrap it I would pull it out. If I’m going to pull it I would want to just replace it. I also don’t want to cover their passenger airbag
Hi good job I have a question, can the black piece be separated from the light brown piece?
Yes and no… yes you can take it off, but you need a plastic welder to put it back together. The pieces pull away from each other enough to tuck the material between them
How was it before it got total? Was the sticky door fixed? No more stickiness? Did you just wrap the vinyl over the sticky shit?
Yeah it held up great until the car went to Copart. No more sticky. Just cleaned it and added glue on top of the sticky parts
V good job man
How did this hold up 1 year later?
In a ditch my guy lol
good job mate. my lexus has same issue and til today never occured to me to check for vids on youtube. who knew there is millions of them...damn shitty dash material!
Thanks bro. I just got sick of my kids and my jeans getting sticky tar on us every time we touched the doors. Even a crappy job covering them is better than that mess
Anyone can tell me exactly what material is that and maybe a link to buy it from Amazon
It’s called faux leather and I got at at a local fabric store called Joann. I looked on Amazon and found something similar.

If I had to do it again, I would try to use some material that is thinner… maybe like this next one.

You could of gone to Lexus and get it changed for free, they got mine ordered.. just waiting on them to arrive at the dealership for installation. You can probably still go and get them replaced.
It’s a 10 year extended warranty program that is expired for the first batch of the IS. This car was a 2006. I just picked up a 2009 IS250 that was still covered until March 2021. Dealer ordered them for me this time, but a ton of people are out of luck and are sick of the sticky like I was with this car!
@@jontonluvwonton8782 oh I didn't know that part, my car is 2011, so it is still covered, thanks for the info.
@The Real I highly doubt that one is still covered. It was supposed to be 10 years extended warranty but my new 2009 didn’t expire for 12 years. You can call the Lexus Brand Engagement line and give them your VIN to find out for sure.
Can that black plastic part be purchase separately or is a whole panel needed?
It’s all one piece… I have seen carbon fiber covers you stick over the just black part. Looks great but I’ve never seen them for sale anywhere. Only seen people with them in the Facebook group.
DO YOU HAVE A EMAIL Y CAN CONTACT YOU ??
I would be happy to answer any of your questions here if that’s alright. Not sure how to private message on YT either lol.
How much (length) of that leather did you buy
I bought 2 yards from the fabric store. Had a bunch left over.
Niiice!!! 😊
Hi Jonton, did u use leather ?
It was fake leather. The craft store I bought it from called it “Faux Leather” on the tag. I just walked around looking for some material that didn’t look cheap and was thick enough to cover the cracks defects under it.
Where can I buy this leather fabric?
I got it at the local fabric store. It was either Michael’s or Jo Anne’s. Can’t remember anymore. It’s just fake leather.
how did the glue last mate
It lasted until the car got totaled lol
@@jontonluvwonton8782 Wish i could find someone to do mine ive done old facons and holdens but not game to tackle this with electrical s dont know where you live but if someone would do mine id be over the moon i hate looking at them so much
@@waynedyer1152 lol I’m in Texas, but it’s not that bad. Just start on the rear drivers side door so you don’t have to look at it all the time.
Do you have to remove the door to do this?
You may be able to get away without removing them but the glue is messy and the door panels can’t be flexed back to tuck the leather as easily. Good luck!
@@jontonluvwonton8782 Ah makes sense. I just wanted to cover up my door panels without the hassle of removing the doors lol. Very good video though and thanks for sharing.
@@blackpanda7612 sure thing… door panels come off in only a few minutes. Take the back off first so if it breaks who cares lol
@@jontonluvwonton8782 😂😂 I'll give it a go mate. BTW how is the suede wrap holding up after so long?
@@blackpanda7612 lol that car went into a ditch and insurance sent it to auction!
Just buy a new door panel from eBay it’s cheap 💀
I did all 4 panels for $40 total and have material left over. Plus I live in Texas so if I buy the same doors it’s just gonna happen again after it bakes in the sun.
Is that piece a part that I can buy or is an entire panel needed?
Why do you switch to whispering?
Lol I had to go outside to do the glue... it was around 2am and sound carries through the alley so I wasn’t trying to wake up the neighbors!

"sixteenth of an inch"
Americans are living in the stone age with their imperial system...
Great video otherwise. Thanks!
@@mato8225 Don’t you still have a freaking King?! At least our country is bigger than a stone. Oh shoot you said thanks at the end haha. I mean jolly oh good boy or something. Fingers crossed you’re from UK or my insults are pointless! Cheers
@@jontonluvwonton8782 Where do you think I am from? I am from a Republic. Btw, the imperial system is a remnant of the British. The metric system was made by the French after they deposed their monarchy and changed everything from the Old Order, but for some reason the Americans who were very like-minded did not follow. (I am not French either.)
Anyway, this Toyota/Lexus material is a pain in the neck to so many of us. Your video is great and if I am just deciding whether to follow this method or the powdering method I saw from others.
How is the wrap holding up?
@@mato8225 it was pretty good until I totaled it… i live in Texas and it was hot as hell so the spots that were pulled too tight started to pull away a little. I got a slightly newer is250 that was still under warranty and the dealership replaced all 4 door panels and the dash for free. Even gave me a loaner while they had my shitbox. There are a few comments here that give some suggestions on better glue to use or techniques for heating the material to get better stretch around the trouble areas.
@@jontonluvwonton8782 hey dude, as long as you're okay, like you said it's just a shitbox (that's pretty fun to drive). I heard that the dealer replacements end up melting too down the line. Did they give you the exact same material except new?
I strongly suggest you tint your windows to the maximum level limit, and then some. I am thinking of perhaps even tinting my windshield with 70% tint despite windshield tint being fully illegal here. I see VWs and Porsches coming with those tints new from the dealerships somehow, so it's worth a try. Way easier process than wrapping your doors/dash and will extend their lifespan by a lot.
Also get some reflectors in your car to use for your windows if you're ever forced to park outside in the sun.
My car is a JDM 2005 Lexus 2is350 (2is started in 05 in Japan while it started from 06 in NA). It's a great car and I plan to keep it for at least another 5 years. New cars are way too expensive these days and way too sterile for my liking. I got this for the equivalent of 6k USD with 80k km on it (50k cheeseburger units 😂).
