    I have over 25 years of experience working in the telecom industry in affluent areas of NY and CT. I have been on numerous service calls after storms. Despite having the latest and best lighting/surge protection systems in place, including rooftop systems with cabling to ground, and protection at the panel, many homes still experienced damage. It's inconvenient, but if you are aware of an incoming storm, the best protection is to disconnect your equipment from the power source.

    I worked for year as a SysAdmin in large data centers and we always had UPS for protection. They not only protect from power outages and brownouts but they deliver clean power. UPS's coming in all sizes from home sizes unit to large units for data centers. When I got back into recording more UPSs to protect gear and supply clean power. For recording they not only protect gear being they keep power going during an outage so you save your project instead of losing it.

    A battery backup works great for surge protection, including lightning protection, but to get protection for the entire house at once, get an "EMP Shield." I think I mentioned this in another comment on this channel. EMP Shields connect at the breaker box and it will intercept and take any damage that would have happened to your devices. Then send it back to the company and they fix it (or send you a new one) for $50.

    • @NativeDSP
      @NativeDSP 25 дней назад

      Just one look at the website makes it pretty obvious it isn't to be trusted. Even the name is suspect, how are they going to get a trademark on "emp shield"? Then you have all the supposed awards or partners they claim to have, no legit business has you scrolling through a list like that before you even get to the main page. They claim to be listed in a report from the department of defence, they might have mentioned the words, "EMP shield" in the report but I doubt they mentioned this company.
      It claims to shunt the over voltage but how is it supposed to do this with just that little box? The only way I know of to protect from emps is to use a faraday cage which this clearly isn't. It claims to shunt 280,000 amps and activate in one nanosecond, those are just numbers they pulled out of their ass. This isn't going to protect your house from lightning and your car is already pretty safe. They also only mention insurance for $25,000 if their device fails, that isn't much compensation if your house has been struck by lightning and burned down and in terms of cars $25,000 isn't a lot either.
      This is just a little box that is supposed to connect to your house fuse board or your car battery, there is no way this can protect from EMPs, it is a complete scam.

Anyways, i had insurance that covered it but had a $500 deductible, so i drop that to $50.00. A backup power supply is good not only it keeps you being out in the dark, but because it kicks in there is no surge. Many of them also have a regulator for clean power.

    my Furman PL-8C saved my system last week. I came in and saw the red light indicating an extreme voltage condition. Ie, it triggers at 137V AC and opens a relay to disconnect power to everything. I've had it for over a decade and this is the first time it's had to step in and save everything. When this happened, the green light indicating voltage protection active was OFF, but powering the conditioner off and back on reset the relay.

    Great message. I just went through a long decision process in deciding which rack power conditioner/regulator to get. There are several options from Furman. Almost too many. It took a couple weeks before I settled on one. It was in the mid range. I have a Sales Engineer at SW but I leaned a lot on reviews. Even some of the higher end Furman didn't have the greatest reviews. I wish there was another company that I knew of that offered the same products but I don't know of one. There used to be several to choose from years ago (although most weren't a consideration ie: juice goose, gemini, but there were competitors).
    I was considering searching for a company that made high end power strips but still wasn't sure if that would fit the bill. This is for guitar equipment for shows in my area.

      FWIW, my $270 Furman PL-8C saved my gear just last week. It is not fancy, no USB on the front, no digital display, etc. But it got the job done. Furman explains that at 137V AC the device trips and shuts off a relay to protect the system.
      I have looked at ART and Black Lion, and ART doesn't tell how their spike protection even works. Black Lion's $300 condition absorbs 2775 joules which is 2775W over 1 second. It's less W the more time, but a lightning strike is fractions of a second I guess.

    Very disappointed the Kontrol MK3 cannot edit MIDI templates. That was my primary use case on the MK2, and one of the only reasons I was in the NI ecosystem. I hated that the NKS2 pages feature does not allow you to edit the order or composition of the controls as with NKS1. I feel these were deliberate function removals to lock us into the NI ecosystem because obviously you are not using a non-NKS compatible plug-in like Zenology anymore if you can’t control anything. Anyways, was really hoping no one would buy this thing so NI got the message but I suppose no one really knew what the MK2 was capable of.

    I calculated how much total wattage all my gear uses and then doubled that. That's how I determined which back power unit to get. Then I opened it and connected a 200ah sealed battery (12v). let it charge for a day. place it in a box I built for it with vent fans that carry the air to and from outside. The batteries are sealed batteries but It doesn't hurt to have ventilation for cooling and air flow.
    With that batter connected to the unit, I plug in power strips and then plug everything into the surge protected side of the back up power unit.
    Do any of this *WILL* *VOID* *WARRANTIES*
    That 200ah batter can run my entire studio for more than an hour. If I cut some stuff I can limp it to 1.5 hours. That's everything in my studio. Lights, boards, computers, fans...everything.

    Thanks Barry, I live on the west coast of British Columbia, we also get nasty storms, perhaps not at quite the level of Florida. Thankfully our hydro is always getting updated meaning we have at least 2 scheduled outages a year, one coming up in a week and we are given best practices. That does not cost anything
    Ideally if you update your wall outlet, you can have modern surge protection built into that, and its not too costly. Most power bars are annoyingly good, resetting them is an issue.
    The more crap you have running in your home during a storm is not cool, turn off battery chargers for tools, cellphones, portable drives from usb ports etc... Its plain common sense.
    In all its forms electricity and elementary particles follow the easy path of least resistance as far as I know. Don't give it a chance to take a detour.

    Florida has a massive amount of lightning strikes every year

  • @AT-wl9yq
    @AT-wl9yq Месяц назад

    You're missing one big thing. Lightning and a power surge are 2 completely different events. A surge protector can't protect your electronics from lightning. It comes in through the ground, where a power surge is just more electricity going through the regular power line that its supposed to. As far as I know, there is no surge protector on the market that can deal with a lightning strike. I'm sure there is some type of expensive, custom solution that a government or large corporation can purchase to deal with lightning, but aside from that, you need to unplug your gear in a storm.
    At this point, I'm sure everyone is going to want post telling me how wrong I am. I know it says on whatever device you have that it protects against lightning. However, that's not an entirely accurate statement. While it does say it protects against lightning, you have to read the fine print. These companies know that they're not going to too many lightning claims. So, instead of telling everyone that lightning is not covered, they just say it is, and its treat it like an insurance policy. They make a lot more money paying out an occasional lightning claim than all the sales they would loose if they didn't offer lightning coverage.

      Of course we have all those things, come and experience one of our storms daily in Central Florida. Also there are lots of people commenting from Europe saying they had the issue. Enough of these comments that divide people rather than try to help them.
      Also, second to only Venezuela is the lighting capital of the world, just sayin’.🤦‍♂️
