Very North America oriented. My take from Europe; Computer: whatever, as long it's less than 3 years old./DAW: Reaper/Soundcard: Audient, Steinberg,Tascam, Focusrite, all under €350 / Microphones: Shure SM57 and Rode NT1 together under €350/ Headphone Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 80 Ohm, €139 and speakers: Yamaha HS5, Tannoy Reveal, Kali LP6, all under €200 each, so youre fellow musicians can enjoy the production too. Just my take.
After a good 6-8 months of research, I finally came up with my "budget" solution. I have an untreated room and live in an apartment, for context. The most costly component was my laptop. An Asus Rog Stryx Scar (2022) (gaming laptop) It did cost me $1900, but I did not want to skimp on this part. An i9 32 GIG RAM 1 TB of storage, and both RAM and Drive space can be expanded. It does not bat an eye at whatever I throw at it! I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface. My DAWs are Reason Studios and Cakewalk (free). There are also PLENTY of free plugins (instruments/ effects) out there to fill the gaps, but I waited for a sale on Ozone 10 standard and got a great deal. Since it's virtually impossible for me to have a "real" studio with my resources and living situation, I went with Slate's VSX system and am very pleased. I feel the more comfortable I get with this system my translations will only improve.

My only feedback would be to maybe add some text on the screen with the approximate prices of the items as you talk about them. That's just something that I always appreciate in a video.
I built my studio with 5 things. Macbook air 2015, a pair of KRK Rokit monitors, Focusrite Scarlet Solo, Reaper (with license) Soldano plugins. All i need for under 600 Euro. Given that you have some instruments before hand.

I love my Motu. Build like a tank and sounds Wonderfull. Plus it has midi and a on/off switch. The latency is king here.

I started with an iMac, a Focusrite 18i8 (because I knew at some point I would be recording the drummer from our old band, and the 18i8 allows ADAT), Pro Tools, an SM57 for my Mesa Boogie JP2C and a pair of KRK's. Within 2 months I bought the 7 mic Audix pack, along with an extra D2, and the Octopre and tracked drums for my first time ever 😂! Needless to say I was addicted from the jump! I've since upgraded my interface and computer, bought a new desk that houses additional outboard gear and have accumulated quite a few more mics. And Im still only getting started 🤤. Great show Barry!
Hahaha, sounds like me building my new desk build, at first just a bamboo desktop, then solid wood 8u risers, now a new rode boom arm for the sm7b, an under mount
keyboard gliding shelf for my Arturia 88 fatar weighted keys, genelec monitor stands, just ordered sit/stand quad motor lift kit (feels like I’m tricking out my four wheel pick up)
I had the JP2C for about 2 weeks before the Mark VII was released, I sent the JP back in favor of the VII it’s just more versatile for what I do live
but both great heads

Big gear isn’t enough you need attitude and technique, you want them blasted back a few steps or moving in for a better look just not standing still

Nice man! You definitely have MUCH more guitar gear than I have. But I havent played in bands/live in a long time. It sure sounds like you have the sound your going for though man! And I know thats not an easy thing to always get. Awesome man!

Barry you are a user an advocate of RME as am I .so why not:..... RME Babyface pro used on eBay $6-700 ,.then MacBook Air used M1, .. OC 16 mike, ..logic, and ...slate phones..that is and accurate ,quiet killer system that also introduces "Totalmix" This give you a leg up into understanding bigger pro systems used in large venues and studios. as well as satisfying immediate needs of low cost..
Although I am not the target audience for budget gear, this video was very good and a good idea. I wish this was available when I first began my journey. You would be proud me Barry, I FINALLY got Pro Tools perpetual since you said you were going back. I got the studio version. Sound wise, I like it more than Cubase, but Cubase will remain for my composing and midi operations.
I find the omissions of Focusrite and Audient intriguing. Maybe the two leading manufacturers in the budget interface market, eheh. Audient especially is great.

I bought my Motu M2 when it was first released and have zero regrets.
That is an interesting take on budget. Slate VSX is not on the cheap side, but compared to to buying good amps I can agree it is cost effective. But that is assuming you can wear them comfortable. I always get pressure pain from the glasses under the earpads och picking up noise from the cable bumping on my shoulder, wonder why there is not a good paid with the cable not pointing straight down.
for me I use Irig HD 2 to record my guitars. Also can use I rig pro to record analog synths. for vocals I use vocal synth software called synthesizer v. for editor and voice bank cost 168 dollars. with AI voical synth sound human. I have logic pro. I have MacBook Air m1. I do not have monitors. I do have lab top speakers and general listen to mix on serval type of speakers like default speakers and then my amp. I do need good pair of monitors.

audient interfaces are so good I use to Owen antelope audio and apollo and I replace them with audient ID24 the best ever
Is audient id24 really that good ? And the sound quality compares to Apollo? Also as a voice over do I need this or id 14?
How do you feel about the Lewitt 441 flex? I just picked one up at a discount it sounds pretty nice.

Barry Barry ... HELP HELP ... I recently found your channel and find you to be the most knowledgable, brutal, and honest source on digital equipment and studio operations ... here's my delimma ... I am an arranger and writer ... not with a Phd in digital technologies ... but I know the basics (e.g. the things you just covered in this video) ... but I have been a PC user for many years (from Cakewalk 3.0, to Sonar Platinum and many others ending up with Studio One Pro .. .which I love ... but it was time for a new PC ... ordered a custom Creation Station from Sweetwater ... 2TB C Drive ... (two) extra internal SSDs (KC300 - Kingston) and 64 GBs of RAM ... it was not cheap ... supposed to be a beast ... simply ... it is NOT working ... I also use MOTU M2 ... the majority of my work is done with a large number of VSTs ... I have many many of the major VST products (e.g. Komplete Collections - NI, All of IK Multimedia (I mean their catalog), Spectrasonics, ToonTrack (almost everything), and XLN Audio ... you get the picture) .... on my old Creation Station ... it works great (Windows 10 and only a 500 GB SSD ...it's hold had it for 4 1/2 years .... again I use many VSTs (orchestral arrangements, pop, R&B, Smooth Jazz, jingle work) ... and I have never had latency problems ... the new system is Windows 11 ... everything else is the same, except for the large internal SSDs I added to the new custom rig) ... it's a disaster ... I have been on the phone with tech support hours and hours and hours ... still does not work ...my QUESTION is this ... I'm about ready to jump to Apple ... remember I use many many VSTs on my arrangement (I do vocals and guitar also), but a large amount of VSTs ... Would you have a recommendation on which Apple computer (Mac-Mini or Mac Studio) ... I'm will to pay the price ... I just need consistency and to be able to WORK on my projects .... can you share a little guidance? (I'm thinking Mac Studio M2 Max with 92 GBs RAM (I will use external SSDs as needed ... I just want to be sure I"m not going to get latency and crashes ... hope you can give me a little guidance ... love your channel ... thank you!!

UAD is not exactly budget. The Red or Blue team will do well with a NT1 and SM57. Warm Audio ain't cheap either. I'd say reconsider your idea of budget. I see the ad for Slate Audio came in last. Salesman. Unsubscibing.
That’s ridiculous!
I think this was very much budget. People don't make studios in 2 months. Ppl spend DECADES acquiring things. Because you only acquire them ONCE. Whatever thing people are building with 110$ mics and stock preamps gets thrown out within 2 years MAX once you can hear the difference. Good gear lasts 30 years. Id wager warm audio will last at least 5, and that's enough time to make money to upgrade.
The only piece of 100$ gear that I'll never upgrade is the sm57
