The jump from PS1 to PS2 graphically was insane. I remember getting mine in December of that same year and started playing Tekken Tag Tournament and I couldn't believe how huge of a leap it was in terms of graphics.
I remember buying a PS2 bundle (the electronics store would only sell it in a bundle with an extra controller and 2 games), and taking the bus home carrying a full ass bag of PS2 goodness. Those were the days.

I remember this launch. I went to Best Buy right at midnight and there were like 15 people there. Everyone was chill. So excited about getting the PS2. Just a bunch of gamers talking about how we couldn't wait. We stayed up there until opening, which was 8 am. I remember around 6 am a bunch of people started showing up, and were directed to the end of the line. One in particular was a mother trying to get one for her kid. By that time, there was no way they had enough stock to accommodate her.
I finally got mine, went home and hooked it up to my TV, booted it up...and then went to work, lol. All that and didn't even play a game until that night. It was a great experience. Definitely a memory I will cherish forever. Not likely to happen like that again.

I rushed from my job at Blockbuster (they were cool enough to let me go an hour early) to wait at the Walmart in Beloit, WI at about 6 pm on Oct 22, 2000. It was a 6 hour wait but I got a PS2, something like the 8th out of maybe a dozen people who were lucky enough to get one. I remember feeling terrible for the first person in line who was the "cutoff" point despite having waited almost as long as the rest of us. But after they did come out and announce the cutoff the rest of us in line were able to relax and have a great, excited night. Walmart even gave us some free cookies and juice to keep us going while we waited.
Getting a PS2 on launch night was an experience I'll never forget. Great memories.

When I was a young lad, I was working at the Potomac Mills Best Buy that evening unloading the truck that actually had the PS2's on it and setting up the display units. Originally I was going to skip it because I had a Dreamcast already, but I said fuck it. When my shift was over, I was able to go out and get in line. I received one of the tickets I needed to pick it up a few hours laters. The problem was, I didn't really have the money until pay day. So I drove home and woke up my mom (she was the best), and asked her if I could borrow the money to get it and that I would pay her back in a couple days. She didn't have the cash, but she got up had some coffee and went back with me to the store so she could write a check. Just for reference, I had never asked her for anything like this before so this was an exception rather than a rule. But man...what memories. God I miss my mom.

it's funny to see how different things are between countries. I've seen a ps2 for the first time like in 2005, 2006. every ps2 around here in latin amerca were modified so that they were able to read pirate games burnt in dvd roms. I had mine like in 2008 (I still have it) and there still are places where they sell those pirate copies of the games around the neighbourhood. the fact that you could use those pirate games made it one of the only consoles (if not the only one) that children of lower economy classes could have. now it's impossible to have a ps4 (not even think of a ps5). a lot of people made a living of burning games in dvd roms or making mods (like the winning eleven versions with the local teams) and selling them, basically a parallel economy was born around the play station 2. that made it a legend and the favourite one around here.
btw: i love and i'm obsessed with this footage you upload

We road our bikes at 6am to the Toys R US and there was zero line. Walked right in to a confused staff wondering why they were there and we were there so early in the morning.
We got the big blue box, 8MB memory card, and SSX. We then rode our bikes with the PS2, teasing those in line at the adjacent Target. How we did not get robbed is a miracle. Amazingly, our original PlayStation died on Ocotober 26, 2000.

What an amzazing time. I was a senior in HS...I had bought a Dreamcast a year prior. If you weren't in one of these lines, or willing to pay an exorbitant amount of money online for one, the PS2 was basically unobtanium for about a year after launch. I finally got one at a local Walmart in about May/June 2001. By that time the GT3 Pack had released which is what I was waiting on anyways. In a few months I'd be starting college with a PS2, GT3, and soon to be MGS2. Life was pretty great lol. Cheers.

The excitement was through the roof, I played the demo version of DW2 at Circuit City and dreamed about it. I still have my PS2 for extracting the bios to play on my Z fold 3, pure gold and amazing games too.

Dreamcast was first with Phantasy Star Online, but I suspect Microsoft bought out Sega's spot in the market, that's why Dreamcast got discontinued all of a sudden. Dreamcast was the real future, PS2 didn't get online games until long after launch day.

Back in those days once you plugged everything in, it was all ready to go. No updates or downloads, no HAVING to connect to the internet, no having to wait every few months for game updates or season passes. Just simple plug it in and play. It was a fun time, the most you ever needed was a memory card, but that was it. You see back those days when a game was released, THE FULL GAME WAS RELEASED AND IT WAS A FINAL PRODUCT!
