This is probably my single most favorite song from this game. Stepping from the Vortex Rikers for the first time and seeing the Na Pali skyline, the Sunspire off in the distance, the awesome scenery...this game was many happy evening of shoot-em-up fun for me, ah memories.
2021 and still listening this masterpiece. 20 years ago my mom used to play this when I was around 6. I was just too scared to play it because it was too dark lol But this song ... I'll never forget the sensation of stunning when I left the ship. One of the most iconic and amazing games ever made.
totally agreed, in 1998 this was a pure experience to play, none can know it unless you have lived it, it happened to me with more games, but, UNREAL, was the best.
2024, still listening to it and this still sounds amazing even though i never played this, but you can tell you're in for a fun time exploring this unknown alien world, and fighting for your life against the brutal Skaarj warriors.
I might sound cliche, but this game really made me feel like i was on some adventure. The feeling of being lost on a distant planet with weird wonders around every turn is something i wont forget. I wish they would remake this game in a new Unreal engine soon.
The entire track is amazing, but I could listen to that intro all day long. It just brings me back to that moment of walking off the ship into beautiful, unknown and UNREAL landscape.
I wonder if there's still a good FPS which is based on a plot or gameplay, but not on the graphics requiring super-mega video cards that cost an arm and a leg...
Man, this takes me back... perfect background music for the most JAW-DROPPING scenery ever witnessed in a video game (for the time) It still drops my jaw, now that I replayed it...I just kept asking myself: ''This was made back in the 90s???''
Whenever hear the word "Unreal", I think of the disc (CD, not a DVD ;-)) the game was on. And the text written on the box of the disc. Something like "...Vortex Rikers transports inmates to a planet they are supposed to do their sentences on...". Ah, glorious '90s.
Man, this song has such a feel of... accomplishing something! To finally emerge from that giant ship that imprisoned you to explore a vast planet. Without this song it wouldn't have been as mesmerizing and breathtaking the first time you played. It's as if it captures the story of the world and tells it in this song.
Perhaps the best adventure game I've ever played, along with Na Pali expansion. it was almost dream like, one minute you're in an ancient arena fighting a Titan, then walk down a valley to find a spaceship! I loved how the journey twisted and turned
Exiting the Vortex Riders was an amazing and memorable part of Unreal. The only games to rival the feeling of suspense and awe in Unreal for me was escaping the hospital in Afraid of Monsters: DC and the pompeii level in Darkest of Days.
When I first played this level, I - probably like a lot of people - ran out of the Rikers, and made a hard left. I got to the edge of the cliff just as the 0:11 "swell" to kicked in, and my jaw hit the floor. That was just one of many reasons why Unreal remains my favourite game of all time. It's never been uninstalled, I play it every couple of years, and it still gives me goosebumps the size of marbles.
Oh, the memories. My dad showing me this as a little kid, stepping out onto the planet, Fighting the Tentacle in the house, the first Brute, Finding diaries, jumping off the cliff (You have to do that at least once), and eventually finding your way to the end of the level.
This is the best track in Unreal. Shivers went over me, when i just listened to this tune, remembering, how it was to start exploration of that alien planet. I remember, that i listened to this track over and over... Its perfect!
I have to say that I'm very upset that I didn't know about this game back when I used to play Unreal Tournament on my iMac back in 2000. I played Unreal on my G4 tower in Classic a few months ago for the first time. The music was incredible to me. It was truly fitting with the first area. Then around 2:30 the music reminded me of Underworld II (DOM-Sesmar song) from UT99 while I was getting chased and shot at by these big, scary Na Pali guardians. Shame they don't make games this good anymore...
Completely agree with JTG2003. I remeber like yesterday the feeling when leaving the prison spaceship, out to a new and unknown world. The waterfalls, the sound of the wind, the caves... everything was exciting and dangerous. This music was the perfect accompaniment. I'm sure I'll never forget this game.
Deus ex System shock Half-life Metroid prime Mirrors edge Bioshock and Unreal.... There are first person shooters, then there are first person adventures..
I love this game. I still play it today. I will remember this game forever. Unreal is a masterpiece. I used to play multiplayer with my friend and we stayed up ALL night playing coop multiplayer. It was great. I wish more people would play it.
i was about 8 or 9 years old, when me and my brother played it the whole day on my uncles pc... of course we weren't allowed to :D but it was fun... and still today i think it is one of the most creative and intelligent shooters ever. and of course, there are no games that got comparable soundtracks, except deus ex and NFS II and III... this music is just epic!
Favourite piece of the game. No Contest. I can still remember the first time I saw this scene. I ran out of the Vortex Rikers and hung a left. I got to the edge of the cliff, and saw the waterfall at the exact time the "swell" starts (0:12, i don't think that's a coincidence. :-)). I took one look, and I was like wow, Wow, WOW! That's when Unreal won me over, and it's been my favourite game ever since. Everything else gets to squabble about 2nd and 3rd place. :-)
I'm one of the fortunate few who played Unreal the day it was released, alas, so many moons ago it seems. It reset the bar in visuals and graphics (gameplay was great too). The music though, omfg, revolutionary. I have it all via MODPLUG and listen at least once a week. if you can find it, get it. Also highly recommended, the music from Planescape Torment, though you may need ACM to WAV to get it.
Thanks, This is my one of my favorite songs in the game. I remember getting out of that cave into and hearing this music while seeing the mountains in the background and the dark blue sky it was awesome.
man, i remember getting out of the ship, two strange suns in the sky, the cry of the birds, that little rabbit thing, the hut , the fishes, the waterfall, everybody knows.., greatest moments in gaming. kids dont know what they are losing with the crap that comes out these days.
Despite that nothing serious happens exiting Vortex Rikers, because of this song that moment is as unforgettable as when you entering the Dark Arena level or face the Titan boss.
unreal had one of the biggest impacts on the shooter world imho. the game was just perfect, from the first second to the final fight. it was just such a perfect world, everything was fitting. i remember watching the flight around the nali castle for prolly an hour one day before i even loaded my savegame. not to mention it had coop (patched, but who cares...?) somewhere in my musicfolder i have unreal music slumbering that i exported with the editor :) on that note... reinstalling :P
played this game at a lan club for my birthday with friends when it came out, bought it the next week at the mall, blown away. still in love with SkyTown.
I remember this.. walking out of that prison.. seeing the birds circling overhead.. the ambiance in this game was the best I have ever seen. No game has ever made me feel the way this game did back then.

@angband84 I would have to agree, no game has EVER topped Unreal, not even todays standards of graphics. No game compares to the awesomeness of feeling lost, lonely and trying fight for your life all the while trying to get off the planet.
Yeah, man. And the first gun you found onboard the Vortex Riker. Really cool blue beam, lighting up the walls as travelling to target Everything was cool on Unreal.
This is always in my head playing Rimworld, when your colonists land on a new alien world full of possibilities. It almost works better in that context.

the Na Pali is real world in kauai island, hawai, usa and earth
it was the third game for my old pc that i bought, after doom and dark earth , almost 20 years ago , good old times
Excatly. You feel the same that's I. I feel the breath of fresh air of Na pali air in every play :)
