Like a few others, I haven’t been in C rank for a long time- I’ve been circling in/out of S-to-low S+ for a while- and I’m not looking to go pro or get into the competitive scene fully. But a goal of mine is to reach X Rank at least one time in any of the modes just for the joy of it, and after stumbling on yer channel by chance I figured it wouldn’t be a bad shout to start off with a refresher of the basics. And I’m glad I did, not only because the advice is good + the presentation of it is *excellent* (your disposition is very friendly and inviting), but this episode in particular brought back some amusing memories: 00:37 My very first attempt at playing Ranked went so abysmally that I got unusually heated, and exclaimed to a friend that it wasn’t fun and I wouldn’t touch the modes again- or, at least, wouldn’t for a while until I was “better”, and then only rarely. @@SquidSchool I actually binged through all of the How to Get Out Of series yesterday- and did find much of the info across the videos interesting! Daft as it is, the thing that stuck out the most as a revelation- and one I really should apply- was the idea of doing a couple of quick drills in the test area before each play session. One of the biggest barriers I’ve come up against in applying tips on games is that in the moment, I simply forget and default to muscle memory/instinct developed from just playing it- which, whilst I like to think I’m not terrible by any stretch, I know there are a lot of things I can improve on should I want to- and doing drills + actively practicing at the start of each session before even going into the lobby is the perfect way to get that knowledge to sink in. I’d also like to say, whilst I’m here, that I really appreciated your affirmation of ones weapon choice not holding them back in the S+ video. I’ve always been if the mindset that tier lists for weapons/characters/classes etc. in PvP games are more guides then hard and fast rules, and I myself have been running Foil Flingza as my main for much of my time with the game (couldn’t tell you where it even is in the meta these days, but it’s certainly a tricky weapon to master- I certainly haven’t got there yet!), so I appreciate a competitive player flat out saying that it’s possible to achieve your goals, whatever they are, with the weapon you feel most comfortable using.
@@DeconTheed92 I wouldn't say it's possible to achieve every goal with every weapon; Kiver's silver aerospray run never broke 2600 while his peaks with other weapons are in the 2800s. But X rank is definitely achievable if someone can push the weapon all the way to top 500. The Foil Flingza roller has always been lowkey solid; the weapon hasn't been touched much by patches. It's basically a splat roller that paints better and has more range with a better kit.
I'm S+ in all game modes but Clam Blitz (stopped playing regularly around when it came out). Just started from C- in Clam and it's a lot more challenging than I thought it'd be. Kinda fun to start from the bottom again though.
Clam Blitz is a bit rough in the early ranks just because a lot of people choose to play without knowing the rules. Sometimes you can go as far as wiping the enemy team and opening the basket all on your own, but you still won't score more than that power clam because your team just doesn't realize they've got an opportunity to score or how to capitalize on it. It gets better.
Rewatching these years after already hitting quad x and playing competitively. Hit a wall of frustration so sometimes you gotta go back to the fundamentals. Still a great series!
During the "where's the roller" part, I thought you where going to say "trick question, he's to my left and, well.." roll the clip of getting slammed by them.

I’m in A- in s3 rn and I even found these useful. Proves that even the most basic and fundamental things are important as I’ve definitely noticed I haven’t reacted fast enough to bombs which is one skill you’ve mentioned.
4:20 Had a reaction of "Huh, that's a pretty huge outlier, though. How do you get to level 60 and STILL be in C rank? I guess it's possible that they just play Turf War most of the time. Or maybe it's just that this is a lobby for Clam Bli- OH LOOK IT _IS_ CLAM BLITZ." Of course, these kinds of outliers DO exist in the other 3 ranked modes as well. But, y'know... And most of all: for those that want to Rank Up - they and you all have a Better Chance than I do (even against a BAD Rating and Grading/Rewarding System, but we won’t go there, and don’t need to now). As of this point onward - I am to play the game that makes me the happiest, me using the Board to Draw and all, and then became a support player for streamers. Ranked and True Competitive play - my road burned. For that, I’ve Retired (both by choice and by no choice at the same time). So, for those who want to get X Rank - do so by this Quote… “Player Discretion is Advised.”
as a person stuck on c-, instead of blaming my teammates for loss I admit it’s my fault and tell myself I’m never going to get better, because even after watching 28 videos, this being the most helpful, I still can’t win once, currently on -28 points.
I definitely feel this and it is definitely a rage game for anyone who isn't above average. The only thing that's helped me reset sometimes is going to turf war and trying a totally different weapon class. I usually play nzap, but in splat 1 I was a roller main, so I switched to that for a bit. It made me stop playing as aggressively and take on more of an aggressive support role, which overall just helped me see things in battle I wouldn't have noticed otherwise, because it makes me play differently. Also, switching to another weapon class helps not to take the matches so seriously, because it's not your main. idk why but something about that makes it less stressful.
Actually, to add onto what I previously said, Anarchy series is the most balanced because everyone has to play solo, and you get a lot more rank points for won battles, even if you lose the series.
Yeah you may be tearing it up in top 500 lobbies but what are you gonna do when your teammates are trying to throw their power clams into your own basket? Huh? Whatcha gonna do then? Exactly
Having only played about 20-30hrs of splatoon 2, c rank is absolutely brutal for me rn in splatoon 3. I'll feel like I'm learning and growing but also every other match is against a team that is so far beyond everything else in rank c that they are basically playing a different game entirely. My guess is a lot of high rank people didn't transfer save files over or something because there is no way these people aren't splatoon vets. Edit: Anyone reading this having the same problem, play series not open. It makes a huge difference and actually feels like going against people of a similar skill. Open has the chance of going against coordinated teams. Series is solo only
Just hopped into ranked a few days ago and I definitely feel this. I just couldn't stand getting destroyed in turf war anymore so I wanted to play with people like me (aka, pretty bad) but instead I'm just getting wailed on a little less instead. It feels like I'll have a few good games where I can _feel_ myself taking two steps forward, and then for the next 10+ games I've taken a step back and go back to being destroyed.
@@doukzu I had a much better time in series. In open you get matches against teams of friends on voice chat, some way way above your rank. In series it's often a lot closer to your skill and only solo players. I'm now in b rank and in series the matches are always pretty close. Think I've only had a few matches where one team won by a lot. So maybe give that a shot. I've been having a way better time since I made this comment.
@@leftovernoise I just tried that earlier today and won my first two, lost my third. I mistakenly thought if you had to do the series all at once, so when I got a connection error I stopped haha. I will definitely try it out more, thank you for the advice!! edit- I only have 1 1/2 series to go off of, but it has been a HUGE improvement! 4 - 1 wins until it switched to clam blitz, and then lost the series due to a connection error haha. But otherwise great! I feel like I'm finally playing the right game.
@@doukzu omg I'm so glad I could help! Literally same thing happened to me. And honestly b rank feels even more consistent with the matchmaking than c rank. C is the fuckin wild west. Especially so soon after release. A lot of experienced people didn't transfer their accounts and started fresh in c rank. My only problem with series is I feel like it moves me up way too fast haha, I wish I could play against only solo players but in open so I'm not rocketing up in rank before I'm ready. I think in open, someone c rank can be teamed up with friends of any rank, so that's why people tend to get steamrolled.
@@leftovernoise _definitely_ agree with the ranking haha. I'm already attempting B rank but I've only played 4 series, and lost 2 of them. Being on a more even playing field is great! But I don't think I'm exactly improving as much as my rank is. I guess that's supposed to even out when I end up losing more to better players, but it's _so_ much faster than open anarchy haha.
When my Splatoon 3 copy comes in tomorrow so watching these School videos (despite already being higher than C rank) and learning some things to keep in mind. I should definitely test out Inkzooka more given I was terrible in Splat 1 with it...A lot of my practice time goes to charger flicking, but I could use more special practice.
I am starting to play splatoon 3 and I've avoided ranked like the plague just because I did not want to lose points. Guess I gotta watch this video now lol
i've played this on my friend's switch without internet, grinded hero mode, got my own switch and got splatoon 2, (with online!!) grinded hero mode part 2, grinded regular and now im in ranked!!
They admitted to themselves that they have more to learn Me: ok that seems obvious If that seems easy and obvious I would hazard to guess that you tend to struggle with this more than you think Me: … Me: alright then
After some tough decisions - I found an alternative plan- Rather than DROP my Ranks back to C- and just Start Over on my Main Account - I’m actually going to set up a NEW Account - an Alternate to experiment with in beginning Ranked - this time WITH Motion Controls on and ready. Hopefully this time, I CAN Find my problems there while I’m at it.
Honestly, just experiment on your main account. If you drop a little you drop a little, but I don't think it'll be as hard as you think to get it back up when you're ready to go for it again.
@@SquidSchool on there - I’ve done some parts on motion controls - trying to narrow down of how and when I need to do sharp turns on aiming and if having to follow the screen since I’m using handheld mode + motion - or combine aim and sticks (if able). Then the obvious part of having to “Align” via “Press Y Button” and get comfortable positions.
Holy… I actually didn’t notice this Option until now… “Recon”. Of all my time playing and currently struggling in A Ranks, I never saw or even noticed the Stage “Recon” Option.
The only problem I have is I tend to move around a LOT while playing any game, so motion controls are incredibly annoying for me to use. Any tips on how to fix this? Also, the last tip made me remember my first rainmaker match where I got mixed up and accidentally brought the rainmaker to my teams side instead of the other side lol
Something that helps a lot is to stabilize your arms while you play. I rest my forearms on my thighs while I sit so I have that physical point of reference for where my hands are. That said, it's going to just feel weird for a while because it's a control scheme that isn't used in other games. You'll get it with practice, and when you do, you won't hit a skill ceiling that stick players hit and you'll be able to improve a lot more quickly.
Well looking at this I've got multiple major issues that this really just tells me to NOT ever do Ranked because it'd just be infinite frustration and depression 1) I cannot use Motion Controls. I play Splatoon with the controllers docked and using motion controls just induces nausea very quickly to the point I feel like I'm going to be sick. The little controller attachment thing they gave with the Switch is good for use in stick aim but trying to use it for aim controls quickly piles up intense pain in my wrists. Not as bad as the Wiimote did but I'm not going to enjoy a game where I'm in physical pain playing it. 1b) I'm a -2 or -1.5 on the stick sensitivity as above that I'm just utterly unable to even semi-reliably hit even with pinpoint accuracy of the Splash-o-matic or even with the wide spread of the TriSloshers And I think this isn't really covered here but falls under "Poor Vision" I can't identify inklings reliably when they're on a same ink colored background. I'm not even talking about tracking ink trails through ink. It's that with many color combinations I simply struggle to pick up inklings with the colors like eyes struggle to focus on them. Not even sure if Color Lock will help Still at least now I know it's not even worth trying and just to live eternally in Turf War and throw enough matches at the wall to get Ruler title in Splatfest. After all trying to get out B- was just a measure of throwing enough matches at the wall and hoping the RNG let you through since most matches were either 30 second losses or long drag out wait for the clock to run out events. I still think they mess with your throwing between recon and actual play with Clam Blitz as even being on the damn bump and having the throw marker over the basket has always resulted in the throw going short.
Does this guide apply to Splatoon 3 as well ? Been playing solo que ranks and in C+ kinda hard to win when you don’t have reliable teammates it’s kinda frustrating. But there are times I just get shitted on too cause I’m still learning motion controls.
well, when it comes to tower control, just play rapid blaster. wont last in higher ranks without the skill to back it up, but if you want to climb quickly it came with a 95% win rate for me, with those same games showing me as obvious MVP, with most objective points and kills... XD
@@goddesscarrie767 well, depends on how existential you want to get. Multiverse theory? guaranteed to happen in at least one universe, we just happen to be living in it. Reality? well, it has happened, meaning it is 100%. It is impossible for us to have not seen it after we have both responded. Math? Well, there are too many humans to manually count, in an era where the internet is almost universal, on the most popular video site on the internet, with a finite amount of available content at the time of viewing (even if that finite amount is more than any single person could consume), on a channel that is so small that most views would be found late... If you're interested in learning and trying your best to improve, I'd be happy to get some gameplay footage from you and talk about it in Squid School sometime!
The Jr. is honestly the perfect weapon for someone in your position, playing with teammates who are way higher level than you. You paint ground, you give them armor and buff them, you're helping without having to be useful in combat lol
I know you said remaking this series isn’t feasible, but I really wish you were able to (I’m not asking you to because I get why you can’t, but I wish it were possible)
@@samuraisharkie just about all of the core fundamentals mentioned in this series is still applicable to s3 as is. It's just not a good use of time to redo all the work to say the exact same things, just with s3 graphics insteadof s2.
I wouldn't say that smurfs have so much of an effect on your ability to progress; smurfs get out of those ranks extremely quickly, and then they jump ranks. The vast majority of people you'll encounter in your games are at the correct rank for their skill level.
@@SquidSchool totally when I really got into the game I fought pros and got absolutely snacked on and it made me better so I do to C rank players every once and a while
I'm not going to say it's not possible, because if I did I'd be wrong. In a similar way, it's possible for me to ask my friend if they want to hang out by running 12 miles to their house and knocking on their door. In a way, it would be pretty impressive and remarkable if I did it that way. That doesn't necessarily mean it's the easiest way to do it though. I stand by my belief that motion controls are the easiest way to reach a high level in the long run and that they make it possible to aim more quickly and precisely than using just the sticks. Because of that, if I'm going to start teaching a newer player what they should practice so they'll rise through the ranks, I'm going to tell them to play motion every time (unless maybe they get motion sickness from it or have a physical disability that makes it impossible).
@@SquidSchool yeah I know that playing sticks isn't the best and I wasn't forced to play like this but here's the thing that kept me playing sticks : At first I was playing ssbu, at a decent level but got really bad habits, since I'm training with CPUs. So I decided to catch a break, and played mk8 in online, and I was pretty decent, but kinda dropped mk because being mariokarted can be one of the most frustrating things I have ever experienced in a video game. So I dropped my, and played splatoon. Which wasn't a total new experience at all because I already played the story mode. So I was going in my way, playing blob on level 15 in turf war, and tried ranked mode. This is where I thought oh boi, we're gonna be here for longer than I expected... Because I really enjoyed the game, and I was just rushing through ranks with my sploosh 7 until S rank, where things are getting tougher and where I decided to continue playing and saw that motions were better, but I wanted to make this like a challenge, not like a game that I play an that I drop. So I decided to stick with sticks. And it worked, but I had to tryhard because I lost way too many games during s+, so I considered actually playing motion, but it wasn't really for me. So in s+ I was just tryharding, and played weapons that I could play with sticks, which were luna/clash blaster, kensa/kensa dynamo roller, foil flingza, and sploosh 7, aerospray MG only on splat zones, and carried games all day (24 k/a record in s+). And after a journey of 9 months, I finally reached it, x in sz, x in tc, x in fartmaker( gosh I hated this mode ) and x in cb. Now I play ssbu, but still watch splatoon game play, because I find scrims very entertaining.
This video did not help me at all: 1. Every time you lose in ranked, it punishes your points. This idea that, not caring about losing in ranked is bad, but getting angry if you lose in ranked is also bad, makes absolutely no sense. 2. There are tons of advanced things about specials that the game literally does not tell you about, and you didn't cover the specials at all besides "just use them right" 3. You didn't cover anything about gear, abilities, or main weapons. I was hoping this video would help me get better at ranked before I move on to Splatoon 3, but it did not.
You know how long the video would be if he went in detail about all the weapons, subs and specials so you knew how to use them properly? If you want to know about a certain weapon or special, just look it up. I'm sure there are enough guides out there for you to learn about whatever weapon or sub or special you want to Also watch the other vids in this series, they have more helpful tips that this video doesnt give you. Gear n stuff doesn't matter until about s+, which I'm pretty sure he said in the video or future ones anyways. Also you can force yourself to not care so much about rank. Its just a game, and you should start seeing it that way, as I was very sensitive about my rank and whether I won or lost when I started playing ranked too. Hope this helped you.

X rank but watching this for fun
Thx for those advice wich are useful in other competitive games
as a person stuck on c-, instead of blaming my teammates for loss I admit it’s my fault and tell myself I’m never going to get better, because even after watching 28 videos, this being the most helpful, I still can’t win once, currently on -28 points.
So much memory from that time
Me who’s been 14th in the world once-
Might as well watch I might need this!

Play till you get out of C rank 😳
When my Splatoon 3 copy comes in tomorrow so watching these School videos (despite already being higher than C rank) and learning some things to keep in mind. I should definitely test out Inkzooka more given I was terrible in Splat 1 with it...A lot of my practice time goes to charger flicking, but I could use more special practice.
Coming into splat 3, this series will be important information to me. Thank you.
Edit: hehe CBASS+X Sounds like Sea Bass
I am starting to play splatoon 3 and I've avoided ranked like the plague just because I did not want to lose points. Guess I gotta watch this video now lol
Thanks Gem!!! This was awesome, maybe I can get out of there one day >:)
Shush you've been out of there forever lol
I cant believe im so bad at Clam Blitz i had to watch this
It's not a super intuitive mode, and there's not much of a tutorial! We do actually have a video on Clam Blitz specifically
i've played this on my friend's switch without internet, grinded hero mode, got my own switch and got splatoon 2, (with online!!) grinded hero mode part 2, grinded regular and now im in ranked!!
You're on your way! Good luck, new squid friend!
@@SquidSchool ayo thanks!!
oh i just found it ive been playing only sploosh only turf since 2019 so i will learn now
They admitted to themselves that they have more to learn
Me: ok that seems obvious
If that seems easy and obvious I would hazard to guess that you tend to struggle with this more than you think
Me: …
Me: alright then
6:00 my mind was thinking right behind you
Y’know I used to be super angry when I played anarchy so now I’m positive
After some tough decisions - I found an alternative plan-
Rather than DROP my Ranks back to C- and just Start Over on my Main Account - I’m actually going to set up a NEW Account - an Alternate to experiment with in beginning Ranked - this time WITH Motion Controls on and ready.
Thanks!
Even though this is for C rank, these are good tips for folks at just about any skill level
How to get out of C rank - Aquire Hands 😐
Im in x rank yet im still amazed at how little range my clapples have
Yeah, that weapon's got less range than a kid shooting spitballs
I'm in S+ and I still need to learn some of these. Ha....
These concepts definitely go higher up the ladder than people might think. You'll find I end up repeating myself a lot in this series.
Holy… I actually didn’t notice this Option until now… “Recon”. Of all my time playing and currently struggling in A Ranks, I never saw or even noticed the Stage “Recon” Option.
Recon is so good and the game basically doesn't tell you about it at all x.x
The only problem with ranked battles I have is how hard it is to catch up if you fall behind.
I actually tried using stick controls at one point and I just can't use them at all so I've always used motion controls
perfect!
Well looking at this I've got multiple major issues that this really just tells me to NOT ever do Ranked because it'd just be infinite frustration and depression
1) I cannot use Motion Controls.
1b) I'm a -2 or -1.5 on the stick sensitivity as above that I'm just utterly unable to even semi-reliably hit even with pinpoint accuracy of the Splash-o-matic or even with the wide spread of the TriSloshers
And I think this isn't really covered here but falls under "Poor Vision" I can't identify inklings reliably when they're on a same ink colored background. I'm not even talking about tracking ink trails through ink. It's that with many color combinations I simply struggle to pick up inklings with the colors like eyes struggle to focus on them. Not even sure if Color Lock will help
Still at least now I know it's not even worth trying and just to live eternally in Turf War and throw enough matches at the wall to get Ruler title in Splatfest.
I caught a CBASS+X. No wait… it’s at least a C+.
XD
wow tour comment was posted 43 minutes ago. what's the odds we both find this video an hour apart
I know i am not calculating it, but i still suspect the chances are higher than they might first appear.
Just having some fun with the reply, not actually complaining. XD
1:26 I would say what is that aim but I cant do any better
I’m S and S+ in most modes in Splatoon 2, but about to be B- in Splatoon 3 so I’m taking all the tips I can get lol, I wanna get to X rank this time around

I feel your pain from when I started, I’m actually having my issues in A Ranks.
i have 675 hours on splatoon 2
still in c- for all modes
me who's only on c rank in splat zones because I always happened to play it like at night??? I need to pay attention to the app more.
Nice. I'm still struggling myself. How are you doing so far, mamita?
S+0, still fail to react to bombs sometimes
Same hahaha
one year? damm
I’ve been playing jr on my friends team and they’re all like X/s+ while I’m around c-b but I gotta say jr helps a lot in league
The Jr. is honestly the perfect weapon for someone in your position, playing with teammates who are way higher level than you. You paint ground, you give them armor and buff them, you're helping without having to be useful in combat lol
I know you said remaking this series isn’t feasible, but I really wish you were able to (I’m not asking you to because I get why you can’t, but I wish it were possible)
When did he say that? Im just curious to know his reasons
@@samuraisharkie just about all of the core fundamentals mentioned in this series is still applicable to s3 as is. It's just not a good use of time to redo all the work to say the exact same things, just with s3 graphics insteadof s2.
The level 54 in C rank 😭
Sometimes people just play a lot of turf war before they ever touch ranked
3 weeks, 3 weeks and I havent ranked up ONCE at this point I dont care i just want ONE b- is it too much to ask ;-;
I'm happy to help if you ever want to throw a recording my way and come on the Tuesday Squid School show for a coaching session!

@@Spaghetti742 Ayy, congrats lol
C rank players have to deal with smurfs like me so they get clapped every games
I wouldn't say that smurfs have so much of an effect on your ability to progress; smurfs get out of those ranks extremely quickly, and then they jump ranks. The vast majority of people you'll encounter in your games are at the correct rank for their skill level.
@@SquidSchool yeah but they might get demotivated when they get 34 kills dropped on them and several knockouts
@@oa_swift3694 You almost sound like you'd be proud of that. I'm not a fan of that mentality
@@SquidSchool totally when I really got into the game I fought pros and got absolutely snacked on and it made me better so I do to C rank players every once and a while
Got quad x rank with sticks lol
@@SquidSchool yeah I know that playing sticks isn't the best and I wasn't forced to play like this but here's the thing that kept me playing sticks :
At first I was playing ssbu, at a decent level but got really bad habits, since I'm training with CPUs.
@@sticks4382 yeah dude when I tried motions I hated the game so much
@@Ediitsaur yea when I try motion I had such a weird aim it was unbearable

To try and improve at Splatoon!
Easy. Lose.
Wait.
or just never play ranked
then you have no rank :)
I am about 150 hours into the game and still stuck in C- 😭
This video did not help me at all:
1. Every time you lose in ranked, it punishes your points. This idea that, not caring about losing in ranked is bad, but getting angry if you lose in ranked is also bad, makes absolutely no sense.
2. There are tons of advanced things about specials that the game literally does not tell you about, and you didn't cover the specials at all besides "just use them right"
I'm sure there are enough guides out there for you to learn about whatever weapon or sub or special you want to
Also watch the other vids in this series, they have more helpful tips that this video doesnt give you.
