Easy trick I found about getting that pan off, one side is easier to come out on that shallow side, twist the pan out with the easy side out and slide the pan over a touch and it slides right out. I just did my truck this past weekend and it was extremely easy.

I have a 2019 Silverado LD (old style), so same transmission. I only put on 6 K miles so far (not my daily driver), and trying to get ahead of the curve. Installing the kit to lower temp transmission thermostat, and doing the pan removal and full flush with filter change. Should be interesting to see how much friction material has accumulated in the pan. From reading a bunch on these transmissions, one issue is that from the factory, they are programmed to operate in a constant slip (just a few %), but sufficient to grind away the friction material, especially if you cook the fluid. If you can find a tuner and knowledgeable tech, the slip can be lowered via programming or eliminated entirely. Hopefully, I can catch this early enough to keep the fluid cool and in good shape and reduce or eliminate the degredation of the clutch pack friction material to keep the trans going well over 100K with no problems.
Really appreciate you sharing this video. Very insightful.

I know this is three years old and on the whole it's a great video. I would like to offer some counter advice though from a trained mechanic. NEVER EVER EVER REUSE THE GASKET, THEY ARE ONE TIME USE. ALWAYS USE A NEW SUMP GASKET. SECONDLY, ALWAYS REPLACE THE SEALING RING ON THE TOP OF THE FILTER HOUSING WHERE THE FILTER MEETS THE GEARBOX. tHEY AGE AND BECOME HARD THROUGH HEAT AND OIL EXPOSURE, THAT'S WHY WHEN YOU CHANGE THE FILTER YOU MUST ALWAYS REPLACE THAT SEALING RING. THIRDLY, DON'T WASh YOUr CHIT IN THE SINK, STAND OVER YOUR OIL DRAIN PAN AND CLEAN IT WITH BRAKE CLEANER. THE OIL AND GREASE WILL COME RIGHT OFF, IT WILL TAKE MINUTES AND YOU WON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH DISH SOAP AND WATER AND ILLEGALLY FLUSHING CONTAMINANTS INTO OUR WATER SUPPLY. I like the idea with the ratchet strap, very cool. Other than that there is some pretty questionable advice going on here that could end up costing folks much time and money and second go round repairs NOT TO MENTION THE HIGHLY ILLEGAL DUMPING OF CONTAMINANTS INTO OUR WATER SUPPLY. WHY NOT JUST DRAIN YOUR OIL DIRECTLY INTO THE RIVER AND CUT OUT THE MIDDLE MAN?

    • @SnowDrift

Your water must work different where you’re from. We have septic tanks here, you know, where our shit goes? There are no sewer systems here. Anything that goes down our drains goes to the same place, we are not drinking recycled feces. Thanks for the useless comment. Trucks been great btw. Been doing this a long time and there has not been a single problem since I’ve done this repair. Hope you filter your water. 🤙

Bought my 2014 5.3 LT new. Changed tranny oil every 30k. I haul 4500 lbs 100% of the time. It died at 138k. Now I drop the pan every 20k. These trans are too hot. If GM gave a shit, it’d have a cooler on it. They run 200-220 all summer. It’s absurd. Live and learn. My current trans has 80k on it. Dropping the pan again tomorrow morning. Truck has 215k. I'm confused about the total fluid used - you recommend at 20:18 to get 4 full jugs (16qts), and 5qts of that is the final fill-up. However, you go on to say that you will use the rest of the fluid for flushing it 3 separate times, using 1qt each time.... based on that you would only need 2 gallon jugs.

Service manual states when you remove pan and filter you add back 6 qts. but 5 puts it back between the 2 holes on the dipstick. My pan and magnet looked like yours the first filter change, much better 2nd. filter change. Drained trans. fluid is slightly dark after one year. I have a good peace of mind when my fluids are changed now and the magnet is clean.

Using metric tools on a late model vehicle should not be a surprise to any home mechanic. Remove the bolts, tip the pan to remove the filter and as much of the ATF as possible, shimmie the pan left and right to remove the pan sliding away from the engine, no need to jack up the trans or move the exhaust to drop the pan. This was done on my 2012 GMC Sierra with a 6L80 trans. Slip the pan back in, then install the filter and make sure the filter neck fully seats into the trans, I reused the old gasket and then torque the bolts to specs. I have never had a autotrans pan leak. Walmart accepts used oil.
I miss the old Ford C6 autotrans, the torque converter has a screw in plug to drain the fluid.

I did this and used Castrol Dex VI approved fluid. The transmission immediately started acting up, delayed engagement from N to D, longer drawn out shifts etc...not good. So I did it again and flushed the entire system and used 15 quarts or Triax Global ATF. Now it shifts like it should. A lot of people use Castrol and it's fine, my trans did not like it at all. Mine is a 2016 and I loosened the 6 y pipe nuts at the manifold and it dropped down and made the pan come right out. If you live where they salt the roads it might be a different story though.

The AcDelco dexron transmission fluid is the problem. It has too much water content in it causing the torque converter to chew and burn itself up. I flushed my transmission myself using Mobile 1's ATF fluid and worked like a dream. No more shaking or shuddering on the highway and shifts very smoothly. Putting Acdelco back in your truck is not going to change anything, just making it worse and possibly blowing your transmission.
