Surely there's a better way to load the gun than having to refill the drum in slow motion, pausing every 100 rounds to add in the next ammo can of shells, first? Maybe a really big ammo can with another nearby that can be swapped out quickly?
i think the ciws operate themselves mainly alone...try even selecting a high velocity anti ship missle (russian 'zirkon' or 'shipwreck') at high magnification with joystick or ball courser as target, pointing weapon to thread, then engaging... would take 2 long...prefer man in the loop method...just push button to make r2d2 go brrrt 🤗🤠 and then the math reloading - 4 mins dumping the ammo - waaay to fast 😂
@@AnnoyingNewsletters That seems like a good idea but I don't think it would work out in the long term. Say they come up with a new type of CIWS and it requires larger space more space. That won't work. At the same time, the ship has to allocate a special area to store the ammo for each CIWS. That means all future gen ship has to account for this space.
For something that expends ammo very quickly, I assumed it can be reloaded efficiently and quickly, dayum, that must be a nightmare to reload in combat when you exhaust other means of defending against missiles.
Those are dummy rounds, check the description. Although, I'm curious about why they need dummy round. Maybe the internal mechanism needs to have something inside it all the time? Who knows...
@@SergioScotta dummy rounds are required for normal maintenance and also provides the proper balance of the ammo drum vs the search and track radar’s weight.
They're the dummy rounds meant for counterweight of the drum vs the radome (at least that's what the FCs told me). The FCs hated the changeover from "Metal Dummy Rounds" to "Plastic", as they have to load more of the plastic to properly counterbalance the system. But during the changeover, many FCs kept the metal Dummies as souvenirs...they ARE kinda cool to look on for display, when given a mirror finish.
So if the gun delinks and ejects the shells as they are fired, then does the gun get out of balance when the weight of the ammunition is gone? Must be fun to reload the gun in less than ideal weather conditions!
Sheesh. Tens of Millions of dollars wasted switching from Depleted Uranium to Tungsten. Not to mention inferior ballistics. Once the Green idiocy ends, please go back to the original DU ammo.
Been having a hard time finding this ammo online.
Bruh you shoulda stocked up when we left all them military supplies for the taliban to resale on amazon
@@a.N..... Yea, I'm regretting that.

Good!
@@a.N..... welp, this type of ammo is only used by USN, I doubt they leave warships there
From this video I learn that human hates war, but loves explosion.
FUN FACT: CIWS fires each one of its rounds using a firing pin that has +200 vdc applied to ensure primer detonation.
Short circuit the primer i like it

Finally found a good video of them reloading one of these turrets
How cool would it be to work as one of those guys, operating a ciws?

its not like you would be trusted or physically capable, after all, you're sexually attracted to animals.
@@Valskyr no idea what makes you think that, but it would still be cool to at least see a CIWS in person.
@@Pancake_lover_niko your pfp and name, stupid
So red discarding sabot tip indicates a tungsten core. Blue is used for training rounds. What does black indicate?
This is incorrect. CIWS uses depleted uranium rounds, not tungsten.

Gots to b a faster, better way to load without being exposed?!
That's what I was thinking.
Did they just bolt it on aftermarket, instead of incorporating into the ship with its own ammo depot underneath?

We need ah electric motor and a button for dude manually twisting in the back
Are they changing the rounds in there or why are the ones coming out look like they can still be fired?

Hi, does anyone know the detailed dimensions of the Phalanx CIWS including the ammo drum?
Yes, but if I told you, I would have to "kill" you!! haha! Love that old line!!

Those guys look like they’re having so much fun I wish I was them
Cool
They need to have a black box automatic load just like a rifle magazine
1:47 how and why do there change colour
The red things seem to be some sort of protection or maybe an indication of live rounds idk
offloading dummy ammunition at left and loading tungsten rounds(red sabots) at right (20 mm tungsten, Mark 244 MOD 0 rounds)
@@Military_Archive I wondered what was being offloaded....thanks.
