  • King Sihanouk retired in 2004, giving way to his son, Sihamoni - a ballet dancer. Unlike many monarchies, Cambodia's is not hereditary - rather the next king or queen mother is chosen by the National Assembly from a pool of eligible candidates. When Sihamoni was chosen, what sort of monarch were they hoping to crown?

@@remhk6672 from what my aunt and mom told me, during the start of Khmer Rouge, many people tried to refuge to other countries for safety. Some of my relatives were able to refuge to France and we still keep in touch. My mom told me that at the time when they start telling people to moved out of their house, when people were moving forward, her relatives called her to go back but she can’t because of the crowd and if she managed to move back at that time she’d end up in France.

Cambodia is the most wonderful place. My husband took me there for my 50th birthday in 2015 and we have visited 5 times (if not for Covid, we would've been 7 times). I left my heart there on that first visit and must go back to reconnect with it. We have made lasting friendships and support the village at Phnom Krom and local school. The Khmer are the most beautifully spirited peoples. Every visit, we base ourselves at the same little hotel in Siem Reap and then trip around seeing temple sites, giant statues of the Buddha and waterfalls through different provinces. We love the history and the food but mostly, we travel there for the people. We are seriously considering retiring there in a few years. Most visitors are only in Siem Reap for 2-3 days, which is a real shame as they are missing out on such a rich culture by just seeing the main 2 temple sites and then flying out.

Good leadership leads to peace and prosperity. Poor leadership lead to suffering and death. I was in my high school in Phnom Penh when Pol Pot took over the country in 1975. Most of my family members did not survive after 1979. As I learned our Khmer history in school, it was always ended in bloodshed for power. A peace from Khmer in abroad!

Maybe you could explore monarchies that exist in Indonesia. Although Indonesia is a republic, many monarchies still exist in its territory. Two of which have a unique characteristic; House of Hamengkubuwana and House of Pakualam, since rulers of both houses hold real political power as governor and vice governor of the province of Yogyakarta. That makes Yogyakarta the only province ruled by a hereditary governor in Indonesia. House of Hamengkubuwana is especially in the spotlight currently since a princess maybe take the helm in the future as the first female monarch in its third-hundred-years history

And seeing other similarities like temples and royal tradition, I searched on google and find out their close historical relation that king Jayavarman of Khmer was born in Java when Shailendra dynasty from Sumatra took power over Java island. He came back to his ancestor's homeland in Cambodia and founded Khmer kingdom. That's wonderful history❤

Not a very good King. He left his people to suffer and kill while he and his families seek refuged. Not a good figure in modern history for this king unfortunately. Thank you for sharing the history of Khmer Monarch. This King loved to sing, dance, and all for his own happiness. This king was not an Angel on earth or the father of the nation. He was the father who abandoned his people. This is of course, my opinion. I love my people, my country, culture and tradition, but not my rulers during this modern time.

I disagree with your opinion. I am not saying Sihanouk was a 100% good and did not make any mistakes. However, he loved his people. A few things prove that he loved his people, one, he had helped Cambodia gain independence from France and two, he had tried to keep Cambodia neutral during the Vietnam War. When you speak of Sihanouk taking refuge in China, I wonder if you know or have learned the entire history at all. Sihanouk was ousted from power of March 1970 by Lon Nol and his cousin Sirik Matak while being abroad because of the Vietnam War. How do you expect him to return to Cambodia when a death sentence was placed on him?!!! During this time, the Cold War is happening not to mention the Vietnam War. So he sought refuge in China. Then in 1973 he returned to the jungle of Cambodia and worked with the Khmer Rouge to kick out the U.S. backed-"corrupted" Lon Nol regime and hoping to get his power back. The Khmer Rouge had promised that they would make him head of state. Of course they betrayed him in 1976 by making him step down and placed him under house arrest. The Khmer Rouge could killed him too just like 14 of his grandchildren by they didn't because he was in important figure. Did you know that when the Vietnamese tanks rolled into Phnom Penh in late 1978 that the Vietnamese were going to behead him??? The Khmer Rouge must've known this and they allowed him to escape to China just in the knick of time. Don't forget that assasination of Sihanouk's life was also attempted on by the South Vietnamese back in 1954 when they sent a bomb to the royal palace which instead killed a cousin of his.
With all the bad things that happened to Cambodia and her people, I want to say that Sihanouk can NOT be the only person to blame. There were many complicated factors involved. If you read the history well you would understand. Look at from the late 1950s and the rest of 1960s. Sihanouk's Sangkum Reastr Niyum era had made Cambodia industrialized and Cambodia had produced many talented artists. Sihanouk danced, composed musics, and made movies...why wouldn't you say he is talented?!!...

I am pleased to hear that you knew about Cambodian History during this era. Indeed, King Sihanouk was talented in artsy entertainment. I am glad you see King Sihanouk in different prospect. Again, opinion and how people think of King Sihanouk during his ruling can be positive or negative with or without the history to back up. When you compared the death of King Sihanouk's 14 grandchildren to the death of a nation (about over 2 million people killed) is incomparable. As a father to his nation, he should not have fled his country to seek refuse while knowing that his people are being massacred. The fact is that he fled the country and his so called beloved people with his talented and gift. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. Peace:)

This video is very accurate, very knowledgeable, and well made. Thank you so much for making this video. As a fellow Cambodian i love the king. He's the father of this nation, thanks to him that we can claim independence from France colonization. French treat us very bad. Cutting our land give to Vietnam, and trashing our lives by killing democracy. I don't blame him for fleeing this nation as war comes. He know what best for his country. Who stupid enough to stay and die? Who will rescue the country if he's dead? As long as he can live, we still have a chance. He thought a head for so many years. After years of civil war without receiving any help from the UN or NATO he still get our country back to it knee. It's been only 23 years 1998-2021 that we have full democracy from any country or civil war but we progress very well. You just can't hate the king Sihanouk. No matter what book from the west writing bad things about him, but the truth is still the truth, he's the father of Cambodia freedom. You can't deny that. Also for the people saying that he is not suitable to be a king, please look at Cambodia during 1960-1965 in which he act as Prime Minister of Cambodia. Cambodia at that time is developing very fast, corruption free, low illiteracy, low unemployment rate, no inflation, high gdp gnp, and very nice social health care. Phnom Penh at that time was considered as the Pearl city of Asia. There's tons of research, and evidence proving all of these statements. Also for the people that don't believe it you can ask every elder in Cambodia what was life in the Socialism era of king Sihanouk.

The same happened in Indonesia in 1965. President Sukarno was regarded too liberal by the US, because he let any parties incl. Communist Party to live side by side with the others. Civil war was erupted in Indonesia, killing hundreds of thousands. The coup d’etats in South East Asia were committed by CIA. Please watch the lectures about liberal hegemony by Prof. Mearsheimer, Chomsky and Cohen. If you have more time, please also watch on youtube 2 documentaries by Oliver Stone called Ukraine on Fire and Revealing Ukraine. The CIA was doing it again in Eastern Europe in 2014, resulting Ukraine/Russia conflict today. Georgia was the lucky one, it had escaped without bloodsheds.

Before khmer rouge they would go back and forth through the border to buy food or meet relatives :) The family were professors and teachers in pnomh penh and most survived by lying except my grandpa who admitted he was a teacher. My Dad's Cambodian chinese parents sadly were killed :(
I was born in the U.S. and we have a lot of Vietnamese friends and relatives. The family isn't the fondest of Vietnam (but they dislike Chinese government 100× more) because of stuff that happened during Vietnam War, but we're happy that Vietnamese can live happily and is united into a wonderful country.

I am someone who has heard the name of Kings and PMs of Combodia and brutal reign of Khmer Rouge in current affair books while growing up and later in my 20s,this documentary gave much more depth in knowledge and information about the country which is a home to the world's biggest temple.
Peace which many of us take for granted has already great price which is paid by our ancestors in different forms. As a citizen of a democratic republic country, what Combodian people went through for centuries feels like a nightmare to me. I really admire and appreciate the grit and hard work of people who are trying to make things better.
Corruption has deep roots and it is not easy to get rid of it. But I do hope and pray that Combodian people get to taste the peace, prosperity and happiness in near future which stays with them for long.

Great documentary. It made me cry 😥. I always knew the vietnamese invasion is what ended the Khmer rouge regime and brutal killings but I never knew exactly how and why the khmer rouge came into so much power at that time. Now I know why. King Sihounouk Norodom gave power to them because of the Vietnam war and the bombing by the U.S in Cambodia. My parents are survivor. I sometimes wonder how my country would be thriving if he didn't make one wrong decision to side with the khmer rouge or if the US didn't bomb Cambodia that caused him to seek help from them. Perhaps if he didn't seek independence from France, this probably wouldn't happen.

The CIA should’ve kept their dirty hands to themselves instead of interfering with other nations’ political interests i.g: Vietnam, Indonesia to name a few in South East Asia; Nicaragua, Chile, etc. in South America, etc.

If you want to pin-point the exact trigger, then it was the US bombing Cambodia. The US had no real reason to extend the Vietnam war into Cambodia at that time. Looking back , it was the wrong decision. But what other options did he have at that time? Could he have foreseen that his own countryman could become so bloodthirsty? He was expecting to be handed back his kingdom quickly, not be usurped. The Vietnamese ultimately betrayed Cambodia too and invaded Cambodia.

    • @sweet-teia167

@@Wann-zo7rn2qn4i I agree. He has no options. I’m not saying the Vietnamese are the hero either. Even the Thai government at that time tortured the Cambodian refugees from stories I’ve heard.

@@MoneyAffiliated because CIA was messing around in South East Asia at that time incl. in Indonesia. The coup d’etat in Indonesia in 1965 caused a civil war where hundreds and thousands people died. The exact copy of what is happening now in Ukraine. The presidential coup in 2014 and Maidan Revolution were the exact copies of Libya, Iran, etc. Please watch lectures on liberal hegemony by Prof. Mearsheimer, Chomsky and Cohen. There are many great historical stories that remain a mystery. This is due to the negligence of my people. It is unfortunate that we do not take good care of our historical evidence. What we know most of Historically, we only have ancient stone carvings that are the basis for research as evidence. However, we are very proud.

We did record many important events, but due to constant war during the 15th century, many documents were either burned, confiscated,or abandoned. After the fall of Angkor, many scholars move to writing inscriptions on palm leaf instead, and palm leaf being a natural product,if left uncheck would decompose.

@@khmeremperor1729 Would you mind expanding on this Idea? I would like to hear the perspective of a Cambodian as I generally avoid asking questions about this time to my family since it is traumatic. From what I have learned it seems King Sihanouk tried to play all sides at once to maintain and reclaim power, the US destabilized the country with airpower due to the so called "Ho-Chi Minh trail" killing many innocents which radicalized people into the Khmer Rouge and China supported Pol Pot as a way to extend the influence of Maoism ideologically and to prevent Vietnamese communists from expanding.

    • @khmeremperor1729
      @khmeremperor1729 2 года назад

@@nicholasmiller7750 what you have learned is what I also have learned and I totally agree with everything you mentioned. We seems to have the same basic knowledge about what happened in Cambodia base on what we have collected all available informations. King Sihanouk had tried to play all sizes at once not only to maintain and reclaim his power but he may also tried to prevent the war from spreading to the whole Cambodia as well. Sihanouk might have also learned that America was fighting a losing war against the communist Vietnam and it’s supporters, namely , first China then the USSR. And in the event that America Lose the war and decides to leave Indochina, it may be wise to secretly make an acceptable deal with the North Vietnamese in order to maintain peace, stability and limit the growing number and power of the Khmer Rough who were back by the North Vietnamese. And America did lose the war and left. Unfortunately, Sihanouk was deposed and forced to take plan B as his original plan was then no longer will work. King Sihanouk might have also refused American demand to seal the border and prevent the North Vietnamese from using Cambodia’s soil known as Ho Chi Min Trail due to lack of fund, war machine and man power to do so without any help and support from America. In other word, America want Cambodia to help fight its war with her own expenses, Lon Nol era debt to America until today proved just that. There are many more reasons why/what Sihanouk have had done that I probably can write a book about it. But I’ll make a long story short and get back to your question about my comment above. The war in Vietnam basically is a war for unification of Vietnam, then it became a proxy war between the super powers, the free world against communism. America, China and USSR involvement in the war had destabilized the whole region and destroyed the whole Indochina. These super power has no business whatsoever in the Vietnamese war. And without their involvement the war in Vietnam will be short and soon ended, the bombing wouldn’t have happened in Cambodia, the Khmer Rough will have had no chance to win the war in Cambodia and there will be no movies called Killing Field in Cambodia. America picked the location and the actors then produced the killing field. And when the movie failed to get an award winning, everyone seems to put the blame on the actors, America who is a producer and a director is also pointing finger to the actors.
