I think there's one important thing to know before watching this video. Almost all the people in the allied countries must regard Japan as evil in the WW2. However, was there any difference between the countries and Japan on colonialism? The answer is No. The vested interest group bullied Japan as a newcomer.

correct me if i am wrong, but before 1945, despite the emperor of japan was recognised as divine, the emperor is not necessarily holding absolute power. through many period of history, the real power lies in the hand of shogun, not the emperor

Were you not paying attention to the video? Japan was invaded by the United States and the Allies after 1945, and the country's economy was completely shattered. In fact, it was the main part of the Japanese's surrendering terms that the emperor system and the emperor would not be touched. Trialing the emperor for being involved in the war at that time would not solve anything but caused more violence and unrest amonng the Japanese society. The urgent task at that time was to restore Japan's economy, and the entire country needed a sympolic hope to hold on and continue to work toward that restoration. General MacArthur forsaw it and persuaded Washington to keep the Emperor. He even convinced Washington to send economic aid to Japan at that time, as the foundation for Japanese to build on it. It wasn't meddlig but an act of reassurance that Japan could thrive after a devasting war. Whether Emperior should be trialed or held reponsible, or even the entire existence of emperor system should exist, it is up to the young generations in Japan to decide. They are the future and they have the power to decide those national matters by making their voices heard in any national election. Isn't it how democracy should work?

If the 'Meiji' (??) Emperor was mentally ill and had a lot of genetic issues going on with him...... how on God's green earth did he manage to flush out for completely healthy sons? I know that this is a very controversial thought but is there any possibility at all that the so-called four Sons may not have been his own personal Offspring but instead people that they put in place to fill a particular role? This is not something that is completely unheard of having been done in certain sectors of Western Royal societies.

While this documentary gives good historical facts, it’s interpretation is largely skewed towards a biased anti-Japan perspective: the doc ignores the wartime perspective of Japan that they were liberating Asia from western imperialism. It also portrays Japan erroneously as “unique” in its failure to address WW2 responsibility…. When in fact Italy equally ignores its war responsibility… everywhere in Italy Fascist monuments still stand, and Mussolini is still venerated by large parts of the population. In fact the current government of Italy is run by the descendant of Mussolini’s Fascist party. So suggesting that Japan is uniquely guilty, is false. Furthermore the documentary’s suggestion that somehow Japan or Hirohito are to be blamed for Hiroshima & Nagasaki… is frankly offensive. The Atomic bomb and its atrocities are solely the responsibility of the U.S.

The Meiji Constitution vested all sovereignty in the emperor, by virtue of his "divine ancestry." He had the power to appoint and dismiss all minsters. The constitution also gave him command of the army and the navy. If you really think he was powerless, how was it in 1945 he was able to break his government's stalemate and order Japan's surrender?

@@alesh2275 The British monarch's powers are exercised by his ministers, and as a constitutional monarch he is required to follow the "advice" of said ministers. Edward VIII didn't want to follow said advice, and was obliged to abdicate. No such restraint was placed on the Japanese emperor under the Meiji Constitution. Another difference is the British ministry is composed of leaders of the party that won the majority of the election; under the Meiji Constitution, the emperor appointed and dismissed ministers at will, without any regard to political party.
He was documented as playing a substantial role in the war. For instance, after Guadalcanal he insisted on a new campaign in New Guinea, which was carried out (and failed). He also insisted on a stronger offensive on Okinawa, causing additional forces to be deployed there.

The emperor and the imperial family have already done enough to make amends for their involvement in the war. They have always supported peace and never the option to war, or sided with the Japanese right wing. They have never visited Yasukuni shrine, or sent the current family members to serve in the military, which shows their stance on making amends for their involvement in WWII. If anything, the politicians should be making more effort to make amends.

Well then, since the Japan royal family cannot even influence its ministers' stances (who still visit the Yasukini shrine to pay respect to Class A war criminals) and nobody pays heed of their advice, then what is the use of spending tax payer's money to keep them going. They don't even play any diplomatic role unlike the monarchies of many other countries.

The comparison between the position of the Japanese Emperor and the Pope in the West is a relevant one. There has been a kind of division of power between Emperors (ceremonial/spiritual authority) and Shogunates (political/military rulers) throughout much of Japanese history, similar to the division between Popes and Kings in the West. This remains true today.

How did they become emperors? It's pretty simple: The Japanese royal family is directly descended from the Yamato Clan, who unified Japan for the first time about 1,500 years ago. That's how.
What's unique about Japan is that, unlike many other countries such as China, where one dynasty was repeatedly challenged and replaced by another through wars, the Yamato have been the only dynasty in Japanese history. This remained true even after the Shogunates (military rulers) took political power away from the Yamato clan, leaving them with only ceremonial and spiritual duties.
The political and military rulers have changed many times in Japan, but the royal family survived mainly because they were content with their ceremonial and spiritual duties, not trying to regain political or military power.

Which "foreign origin" do Japanese emperor have?
The Japanese royal family has existed for 2500 years, according to Kokiki 古事記 and Nihonshoki 日本書紀. If you think they have "foreign" ancestors just because some of them marry a foreign princess, then most royal families in the world have foreign origin lol. International marriages are popular in courts of many countries. Not to forget that Yuan dynasty and Qing dynasty rulers are both of foreign origins
