    I use a piece of aluminum "flashing" that is about 4 inches wide, it flexes easily, covers the tire sidewall and goes half way around the tire and bead; I paint half the wheel at a time. A short piece of PEX plumbing pipe fits over the valve stem so it stays black, been using this method for years; well pleased with the ease and the result.

    Painters tape for the area where the rim meets the tire, and old rags for the rest of the tire. 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of black Trim and Bumper paint, 2 coats of clear. Did it on my Pilot's wheels and they came out great!

  • @Z-Ack

    I was able to keep the tire beaded and used a vacuum pump which made the tire recess from the rim enough i just took the carpet plastic and wrapped the tire easily and painted up to the inside of the rim.. good idea on the big wide cheap sticky plastic. Much cheaper than buying the painters sticky plastic. I just wouldnt use it on any painted surfaces.. too sticky..

      This is not plastic wrap! It is carpet protector. It has a gum adhesive on one side and will stick to rubber tires. I wipe tire first with lacquer thinner.

    Being a painter just have to say that spinning the wheel & holding gun straight above the paint would not cover the side parts of rim. You have to do them individually.

    • @Desertsat
      @Desertsat  Год назад +1

      Watch it again and see that we hold the gun at an angle. then reverse the angle and direction of the spin. I've done this hundreds of times.

    • @Desertsat
      @Desertsat  5 лет назад +10

      You could use whatever you like but it must be VERY sharp or the plastic will ball up instead of cut. It takes very little pressure to cut the plastic. Try to cut an old tire sometime and you will see that you can't cut a tire very easily.

      Yeah, this video was clearly made to be a quick showcase about how to mask the wheels and spin them rather than being something in depth of how to to prep and paint the metal surfaces.
      I did something similar for bike wheels where I held them with a long screw driver and spun them while holding the spray can. I've gotten pretty good with spray paint so even from a stationary position I don't have issues, but this is definitely a neat way to do it.
