Self-taught here also. From age 12 I developed skills on piano, organ and drums. Played out whenever and with who ever I could. My twin played keys better than me so I stayed with the Tubs. Dad would haul our gear around to gigs until we could drive. Dad found us a VW BUS to haul the B3 and my new 1966 Rogers Holiday kit around. Yes, I still have my Rogers.
Hey! We were playing high school proms before we were in high school. It was such an exciting time as you know.
At my age I’m still gigging, still loving every minute. I’m booked in 3 bands regularly and sub for about a dozen others. Love my Funk band the most. Soul Groove. The “soul” musicians we sat in with would say, “...for white boys you sho’ is Funky!!” So when their drummer was sick or in the slammer I would get the call to SUB!! That was ‘67.

DanOfTheNorthEast Hey I was just wodnering because im in a band and im a vocalist and we have done a couple concerts and gigs at school and continue to practice together, how do you handle yourself worrying that being a muscician might not work out and that you might just be terrible in the end especially as a vocalist. Just wanted another opinion :)

@@jerry1296, plan on not being able to make a living as a musician. Either get used to starving or get an additional career to pay the rent and buy food. Then play on all of your free time from work. It means tons of long hours, but until you're actually making steady money from music you have to make the sacrifice and earn a steady paycheck. Starving artists (also known as perpetual mooches) are only cute for a short time.
It sounds much more organized and clean when you play now... You really improved your understanding of music. I think this was it that made you grow as a drummer...

Dude....Great video! I wish I would have documented more of my early years. I did sooooo much that will never be seen. It's a bummer. But I have to tell ya....the part that really struck a chord with me was when you talked about teaching. When I got my first few students years and years ago, I did it because my mother suggested I give lessons. Luckily the kids were...well...kids. And complete beginners. I'll never forget the first student I got that could actually play. It was then that I had the same " I can no longer bullshit" moment. And it was then that I really had to look at myself and ask " what do I really know?" I'm glad it happened because It forced me to dive in deeper, not only to deliver knowledge correctly , but to acquire some for myself along the way. Really appreciate what you do man. Not just a drummer but a business man too. Thanks for sharing.

I offer to help great drummers do the very beginning drummer stuff. I have decent form and very decent natural timing. Still suck at drums, but I recover well and most drummers don't sing, unlike me :)
Hell yeah man.. I been playing since 12 ...marching band..private lessons . Blues band and metal and hip-hop ..then started DJing and then taught drums to kids at like 23years old.. just a fan of everything about it . I mainly produce and dj now but really want a v-drum kit.. ( my kit is in a different state.
But i had a 13 year old student that was playing Lamb of God style beats...( I was playing rush at 12....but.. I could tell I wasn't playing all the time when I met this kid.
Anyway.. nice to hear someone else share that feeling or. " Wow!"
I haven’t drummed for years and I was never anywhere near your level but I love watching the odd video that pops up in my recommendations. Glad I clicked on this, fantastic to see the growth in your ability and how you now have your own style. Yes, when with a band you have to keep the groove but when you’re alone and just expressing yourself, wow, the word that popped into my head was, “alive” because, well, it was. Fluid, smooth, interesting are 3 other words I’d use too. Oh, and brilliant.

New sub here! This is totally inspiring! To see the progress you've made in 13 year really speaks me! I'm a dad now and have been playing for 6 years but I've began to feel myself plateauing due to lack of time. But hearing your tips throughout this video have really got my thinking about ways to improve! It may sound like a no brainier to some but listening to myself and forcing myself to try to explain more of what I'm doing sound like great steps in the right direction. Thanks!

That's cool you were able to document your life on video, I was able to do that with my son on his guitar journey. He started on violin in the 5th grade and then became interested in my acoustic guitar which lead to the electric, he is now the lead worship guitarist for the youth band at church and we have a father and son punk band (garage gigs only 🤣🤣).
This inspired me so much, there are a lot of times where ill be practicing and feeling like im getting no where and to see your progress over 13 is really reassuring that as long as i keep at it and really understand what and why im doing certain things then the sky's the limit. Thanks Adam!
I’m learning the importance of familiarity with subdivisions as well. Now that I’m getting comfortable with different subdivisions and note placement, I’ve noticed that the pace at which I learn things has skyrocketed. It’s so much easier to figure out the different things that I’m hearing now that I’m more familiar with time. Great video and great commentary!
Could you explain this in a way which I might be able to understand? What are subdivisions?
@@VictorCardena3 The '&' notes and 'e' and 'a'. These are known as subdivisions. In, say: 1 e & a 2 e & a etc. the mentioned notes are known as subdivisions of a 4 count measure 1 2 3 4. The '&' are known as 8th note, and inclusion of 'e' and 'a' it changes to 16th note and the notes are further divided into 32nd notes and so on.

Wow this makes me realize how much I need to improve, I've definitely come a long way since I started drumming 4 years ago, but damn you had the rudiments down in no time at all ,something I'm still struggling heavily with, videos like this give me a lot of motivation though, keep up the badassery my friend

Nice technique, you're really fast. Also got good feel. up to 2014 you needed to practice more with a metronome, seems like you're putting 120% and can't keep up. From 2015 you seemed to jump by a couple of levels, went into PRO, finally you're keeping on beat, almost effortlessly. Thanks for the Vid, it was awesome to see your progression.

Adam Tuminaro dude you’re story so far is exactly like mine wtf, i started as percussionist (yknow mallets timpani et cetera, with a little kit on the side) but other than that, im 17 and started to really get into te kit like 3 years ago, had the same problem with the super fast random hits in the first year, now im in music highschool and meeting jazz drummers.....man what

I'm self-taught on drums, piano, guitar, bass guitar, and sound mixing. I mean I made my whole album by myself and I got to say after 16 years it feels pretty damn good to be where I'm at right now and I bet my bottom dollar you feel the same way bud because your improvement is impeccable.

I didn't know about your channel until this very video and i have to say 2 things.
1. As a musician and musicophile i feel i liked your playing just from the latest clips, but it's the lead story: you became a better drummer practicing
2. Man if i love how you set the whole story telling here.. it's an ongoing trend to post a video like ''10 years progress plying my instrument" and at first it was okay, i mean mainly you could find simple cronological performances.
But you step it to the next level bringin in a commentary on what moved you into becoming a better musician by practicing and investing money in it.
i love it mainly because the trend just led to a bunch of vloggers getting to know the world that they can learn how to play sounds from an instrument in only a week or even a day.. this video is the real shit indeed.

The MUSIC improvement from latest clips were very noticeable. You always had good technic but the music is coming now.
This is a great video and inspiring for many upcoming drummers I'm sure. I was particularly struck by the huge difference in the Feb 2012 clip and in fact it seemed to me 2012 was the year you really took off with owning these big boy drums in technique as well as feel and emotion. I teach guitar and always tell my students to record record record - you look back and see your own progress which is the big motivation to continue - love what you're doing!

Year late here, but i’m a starting guitarist, and a piece of advice i’d give you is to start off slow, maybe slow beats in different music genres like rap or Lofi, i’ve made a lot of progress learning easy stuff like punk rock and grunge, blink-182s drummer is Travis Barker, and he’s like the Jummi Hendrix of drumming lol

It was amazing to watch you get more relaxed behind the kit year after year. I watched the way you held your sticks. You were stiff in the beginning and by the end you let the sticks do the work. Awesome. Great to see all the different gear too. From Roger's, Gretsch, Tama, Pearl, DW and Sonor. Love that Sonor kit. It sounds amazing!!!

ZX6R I’m guessing you are not a drummer. A guitarist maybe? Anyways, that is absolutely not true. Lessons teach people technique and timing, subdivisions and groove, a multitude of things they can often not teach themselves on drums.

It's really inspiring to see that you keep progressing every year. I'm about at your "2011" and sometimes it's hard to grind out rudiments with a metronome or work on my stick control, but this video serves as evidence that continued practice and discipline *will* pay off. Cheers man!
