Thanks for watching! These are definitely MY top 10 traits, but they’re certainly not all of them. What do you think makes a drummer advanced? Once again, remember that this topic is HIGHLY subjective. These aren’t facts; just some thoughts from a guy on RUclips. In all reality, YOU are the only person who can determine whether or not you’re an advanced player. I hope this list can serve as a reference point for anyone looking to up their game behind the kit; beginner, intermediate, or advanced. 😉 Also, I was going to use better photos of the pro drummers that I mentioned, but didn’t want to step on any photographer’s toes. But hopefully these photos can offer a little credibility to this video, as I have been fortunate enough to meet and speak with every drummer that I reference. And if you haven’t already visited, I humbly invite you to check out OrlandoDrummer.com where you’ll find hundreds of my best Lessons, Interviews, Loops, and more. 💜 Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you all soon! - Adam OrlandoDrummer.com
Thank you Adam. for a well articulated & fascinating overview. Aside from being a very skilled drummer, I admire your communication skills- you're a gifted communicator.
Your content is always spot on and extremely helpful. I really like how you get down to business right away and in a very friendly but professional demeanor and also how you treat your online students and viewers with respect and sensibility. Keep up the good work my friend!!
Such a marvelous way to break these key points all down. Not to mention, the fantastic transitions & edits are just simply top notch. One of your best videos, yet. Highly inspired to go back on the kit after seeing this. Enjoyed this very much! Keep 'em coming!
Agree with all the points here. Adam I think you have nailed the ten elements. My issue as a hobbyist drummer is shear overload of drum education material on the internet. I actually think I will search for one advanced drummer like yourself and focus my work with that person.
Word, #2 is so key! I often think of my hihat dynamics being on a slider. Constantly adjusting the balance to blend with my snare ghost notes, or stand out. We are the mixer. This is a very big difference that good drummers and great drummers. It is essential to having your own sound. And complete control of it! Cheers Adam, great lesson.
I agree with all of this. The click issue surprises me when it comes up because I assumed that every young drummer learned early on to play with one like I did. Several years ago I played on a worship team for a mega church in Oklahoma and the first night I played, the lead guitarist came up and thanked me for playing to a click. He said a lot of the guys that play here (multiple services each weekend) can’t play to a metronome. I was just shocked because it was a highly talented group of musicians there.
As a drum teacher for well over a decade, I have seen very few drummers enjoy (or even tolerate) using a click within their first year or two of playing. For the vast majority of young drummers, it’s an absolute buzzkill; embodying the exact opposite of what attracted them to the instrument in the first place. Only those who make it through the initial mathematical barriers will entertain the idea of playing against a robot to sharpen their sense of time. For everyone else, it’s insanely unappealing. This filters out a solid 80% of the drumming population, who will never log a single moment of practice with a metronome.
@@AdamTuminaro I can understand that. I didn’t like it at first, but my teacher insisted on it, and it was a talking metronome which I thought was obnoxious 😂. I’ve just viewed the metronome as so important because when you’re learning a particular fill or groove, you can increase by 5 bpm at a time and before you know it, you’re able to play it comfortably at a speed that seemed impossible before. Anyway, I really enjoy your videos man. You make awesome content.
I've been playing the kit and percussion for almost 4 decades. This doesn't make me awesome, by any stretch, but I think it gives me a good perspective on the kinds of skills a good kit player will need. If I was going to change anything about your list, Adam, it'd be to replace your Independence item with one on playing with other people. Call it "musicality" or "works well with others", but the ability to literally play next to someone else and have the relationship between you be a good one - is something a great many drummers struggle with. Heck, there are guitar players who have the same problem. For example, I can play an awesome beat on my own, having someone who's listening to it be impressed. If I play that same beat in the context of a band, it's almost guaranteed that it wont sound quite as good; it might represent over-playing, or being too loud/soft, or not fitting the context of what the other people are playing, etc. A good drummer knows how to enhance the music being played, rather than just contributing to it. Just my 2CP. I enjoyed your list, and agreed with the vast majority of it.
I class myself as an intermediate drummer I gig most weekends and am in 4 bands that play different styles of music...I am told I am a good drummer but I am not comfortable accepting the compliment...I have never used a click and cant read music..i am self taught and didn't know that I was playing rudaments..until I said I didn't know any and viewers told me I was playing them..i have been playing for 34 years now..and more at home behind my kits than any where else
As a gigging bassist in the South Florida area, I can confidently say that the Drummer is the one person who has the power to change the perception of the band. By that I mean, if you have a badass drummer, you have a professional sounding band. Even if all the other players are just intermediates, the drummer makes the band...
This has always been a weird concept to me, especially when people comment on my drumming or someone else's. Always the question of "well where am I actually on the spectrum of worst to best?" But every concept you explained completely resonated with me.
Really enjoy this video so far what are you talking about is really good and I like all your videos pretty much thanks for your teaching and your knowledge
Awesome video. Funnily enough, green day was my entry point into drumming. After a few months of Green Day rockband on the Wii I decided to purchase an electric kit in 2009.
Me encantan tus vídeos!!! Hay mucha gente latina como mi caso que soy de Argentina, que no manejamos muy bien el idioma! Existe la posibilidad de una traducción al español? Muchas gracias por todos tus vídeos son y fueron de mucha ayuda para mi!!!
Hi Adam, always loved your videos. You’re both a great drummer and a great educator. And yes, when I hear you play, I just know it’s you because you have your own feel and sound. God bless you!
It was hugely interesting to listen to your points and compare myself against them. I knew most or even all of those weak spots I have already, but this puts it all in a "bigger picture" sort of context. Tiny suggestion: maybe you could have written out all 10 aspects in one frame or in the description or something, to make one able to see all of them at the same time.
Cara, essa aula inspira muito. Não somente dá vontade de ser profissional e melhor baterista, mas de se encontrar e melhorar a identidade no instrumento. Parabéns. Um dia ainda vou fazer o seu curso.
Probably the best video I’ve seen by your channel. Great list! Have you read Victor Wooten’s book, the music lesson? Really takes a deep dive into the 7 aspects that create music, from notes to dynamic, to articulation. I’m not much into reading, but very highly recommend it
Awesome video Adam ! I think you nailed every aspect of what makes a player, an “advanced” one. It’s now giving me inspiration and direction in which I should take my playing to, so that I can get to that advanced level. Thanks for making such a great video!
Even though iam past the age of...wanting to make it....I still love playing my drums and watching your videos helps me concentrate on other styles that I never would have tried....thanks
So. I am at Point 5. Playing to a click. Personally I never did that until last month. Better starting late than never! I started because I wanted my beats to be tighter and I finally found my style of playing. I'm a metalhead but death metal is not my thing. I put groove over speed. Now that I know how I play (Groove Metal, Modern Metal and Hard Rock) I focus to play it with the click... And it works well. I stopped focusing to the click to much. I'm trying to get a feel for the speed and start playing and do little corrections when I'm hearing the click not being similar to my beat
I think one skill that only comes with experience and maturity in your playing is restraint. When you first start out and learn to do cool stuff, your instinct is to just go nuts and play everything you can. Much harder to hold a groove and not overplay
Amazing Golden Nuggets advice.. Thnk you for everything u done.Greeting from Georgia,Atlanta.. Btw before i was playing drum evry sunday at church..now iam pregnant and off for few month..is it possible/safe/normal to keep playing or off temporary for now ? i missed it soo bad
Great list. I’ve been fortunate to make a living as a musician and all of these apply. Attitude is a HUGE one, No one wants to work with a douche. I think Chris Coleman said in an interview, “85% attitude, 10% business and 5% talent. Thanks for the great video Adam!
I'm not an Advanced drummer by any means, but I have never understood why a lot of people think being 'good' means hitting as hard as you can, at least from where I'm from. It's like they don't know dynamics AT ALL.

Seeing this made me confident in the path I'm going right now. Though I still have a long way to go.
I'm sure you're much better now :)
Just discovered this channel and subbed 5 minutes in. Fantastic video and information, you can tell you've put alot of care into it.

Honestly the key to being the best is to constantly try to learn and improve and don’t think that ur better than everyone
Great explanations behind your points. I liked that you pointed out other drummers that excel in certain areas so I can look them up for myself.

Perspective is good to. Some people think they know advanced drummers but they dont

Harry Potter and the Latin Wizard of Four-way Independence would be a preeetty sweet spin-off book!

An advanced drummer is one who realizes that he or she still has a lot left to learn and that learning never stops.
Well spoken and articulate, nice touch, and of course, love the SQ1... thanks Adam!
This guy is basically the samuraiguitarist of drums
Great video Adam, you're a cool dude.
Come on Adam, this technique are very important haha.Brazilian here. Thank you for drum lesson. God bless you.
I have 8 of 10 of these indepence and subdivision is something I struggle with
“Some shit is just harder to play”😂 the way he said it tho omg it just gets to me 🤣🤣
Great stuff!
So good.....thank you Adam! So much on this list that I work on every day.
Thank you!❤
Great video!
You should apply for a sonor endorsement
I think this dude was directly talking to me by mentioning green day as the entry point..all I played for months
the track at 2:22 is bloody sick
8:55 what are those names? Gill Snickle? I couldn’t find someone with that name unless I heard wrong.
Dunno if you found them already but he said Chris Coleman and Jost Nickel.
I think one skill that only comes with experience and maturity in your playing is restraint. When you first start out and learn to do cool stuff, your instinct is to just go nuts and play everything you can. Much harder to hold a groove and not overplay
