Installing a Hexagonal tile floor.

Hexagon shaped tiles were very popular years ago, but faded from use for quite a long time, except for mosaic hex tiles. Today it seem hexagonal tiles are coming back and are again quite popular, they are now available in all sizes and formats, including very large and elongated hex tiles. It has to be noted that these shape tiles can be tricky to install, because they have six sides rather than four, so you now have to pay attention to keeping additional grout lines even in size. There are more joints to keep flat and lippage free, more lines that have to be kept aligned and true. This is basically a time lapse of the installation of a laundry room floor, installed on Mapeguard UM over a plywood subfloor.
All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area. This video contains affiliate links, which means I will receive a small commission if you click on the product link.

Hey Sal! Just wanted to say thank you for your efforts in teaching the skills of this trade. I am finishing up my first ever floor tile job and it's a hexagonal tile. Without your expertise and tips from this video, I would not have been able to pull it off. Thanks and God bless you friend!
Thanks, glad it helped
Man! You’re videos are a project saver! Thank you for your expert tips. You’re a true professional.
Glad you like them!
Nice work ! Question why not pull the baseboard out so you don't have a grout line all the way around and the grout sometimes cracks against wood ??
I just learned how to cut the edge and corners tiles!! Thanks! For the video great job!
Sal's really a Master, saw the other guys but Sal is so fluid ,it looks easy!plus I used his tequiniques, good stuff.👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
I wish you would explain what you are doing when you make those scribes and cuts for the edge pieces. Would be helpful
It was a pleasure watching master at work... Except it was a kinda too fast almost got epilepsy 😁 how much more do you charge for hex tiles cause it seems u did twice as much squats then if they were squared?
Thanks for the video. I plan to do a bathroom at the end of the hall and continue it down the hall. You gave me a great clue on how to line up the tile.
J'aime vraiment les hexagones ! ❤
that is so smart how you measure the tile before you cut it. Thanks for the video, it was really helpful and you did a great job :)
Glad it was helpful!
Great video, I'm doing a whole shower vertical walls with Big ass Hex tiles and its proved tricky!
Thanks for watching my video.
I think they will stay as a classic look as long as they don't have any crazy patterns or colors.
Are you back buttering each tile? What trowel is best for the hex tiles?
Respect! You make it look effortlessly...
I appreciate that!
I'm confused on how you cut to size the tile. You lay tile on top of tile, and then use a full tile, measure from the wall and mark? That accounts for the grout line or did I miss something? Thank you in advance!
2 mins in an you got a sub. I’m excited to go through your videos.
Thanks for subbing🙂
Hey any chance you could explain your technique on how you're making the tiles to cut them. I kinda see but wasn't sure how you're doing that
Hi Sal , What sizes spacers were they ? do you recall? Thanks
What size spacers did you use?
Excellent work... Do you have a vid of Hexagonal tile on the wall...? but the 7" hex and not the mosaic... Thanks
Very clever tiler..
What color grout was used?
What size spacers did you use here?
I’m wanting to put this exact tile all through my laundry room and bathroom, what has to under the tile?
My tiny house is just the shell so it’s just plywood on the floor.
You need to watch this ruclips.net/video/74BDTI67S1M/видео.html and this ruclips.net/video/ttwTTfo-Tiw/видео.html and for $1 download this PDF Floor installation guidelines sowl.co/wWd2d
Sal, do you have any videos showing/explaining the trick you are doing here to overlap tiles and get your cut line? We figured that out for making cuts in one direction (north/south, if you like) but the same failed us in the other direction. I’d love to see a specific Sal’s-Tips-on-Measuring/cutting-hex-tiles video. :)
Here is a list of videos, however I don't have one specifically for hex tile. ruclips.net/user/SalDiBlasisearch?query=Marking%20tile
@@SalDiBlasi thank you!
I have to do a 3 wall bathroom in these tiles next week , im bit nervous to be honest and im tiling 20 years, the way to marked the tile for into the base board ,do you do it that way for walls too somehow ? Also I will have to match the lines going from one wall to other wont I ? ,
Grout lines have to match at the corners, do a layout so mos of the cuts will be in the middle of the tile, away form the angled sides so it is easier to make a connecting corner.
Good morning sir. Do you believe in finish as you go or cuts last? Thanks keep up the inspirational video/work
You should consider getting a tripod. You would get more of an aerial view. I think it might be easier to see as the viewer. Great content!
Coming back??? Yeah like ten years ago and they are still very popular with W/C's. And cafes especially the patern ones.
There actually very forgiving when installing.
What a nightmare to have the skirts left on, don't understand homeowners keeping couple quid per mt for skirt on and yet paying hefty for tile.
Great job as usual
Does black floor tile show dirt or water easily? Wife and I are thinking of installing something similar and the only hesitation is the black color showing dust and water easily... Thoughts?
glossy Solid color tiles will show the most dirt and grim, mat finishes less, the more complicated the pattern of the tile, the more it will hide things.
kinda funny to been doing it as long as you have and still dry fitting. i guess in the re model world you have all the time in the world. good tyo see you know how to straight scribe though it looks really nice Sal.
Dry fitting is a method to employ when needed or when it makes the job better or move along more smoothly. I have all the time in the world because I make sure I get paid what the job is worth, not what a customer wants to pay.
What was the name brand, type (ceramic or porcelain) and size hexagon tile did you use?
Hi Sal. I will be doing a 40 Sq ft bathroom with 8×8 hexagon tiles. It looks time consuming. How much more would ya charge for this type of floor?
Can't say how much to charge, in any case you should never do tile work for cheap, always get paid for the kill you have acquired over the years. People are not paying for your time, they are paying for your ability.
This is great! Im6doing black hexagon tile in my kids bathroom soon, what size spacers did you use?
1/8 but that will depend on your tile.
@@SalDiBlasi thank you so much! I believe it's the exact same hexagon tile you used.
Hi Sal, just curious... why the Mapeguard lately instead of Ditra? Wait, I have a guess after watching the video. It would appear Mapeguard requires far less thinset than Ditra. Less voids to pre-fill?
Had a roll, just using it up.
Sal I notice that you've not used levelling clips for this tile .I'm with you on that .iv noticed on you tube and Instagram alot of tilers using clips on small tiles .I think alot of tilers have become over reliant on these .it's becoming really ridiculous at the moment relief on your touch , feel and expertise when fitting small tiles
Pretty much never use leveling clips on tiles that are 12x 12 or smaller, not needed, installed tile for decades without them, but then again large format tiles were very rare back then.
Basically it's not leveling system even though it's named that way better name is lippage system. Meaning your floor need to be flat before tiling you can't just tile uneven floor with leveling system and expect everything will be perfect.
Stephen O Neill I tried to install 7”/8” hexagons with the Tuscan clips and because each face of the hex is 4” you can’t get 2 of any lippage spacer I’m aware of to fit in a side. I’m now a novice+1.
@@raybarry5822 I"m installing the same tile on bathroom floor - are you saying just use 1/8 spacers like Sal or you prefer clips you mentioned?
MStar10 I used the circle spacers. The lippage system clips are only compatible with larger format tiles. If you’re installing smaller (6”-8”) hexagonal tiles on a floor I’d recommended the circles.
That tile break makes me weak in the knees
Looks nice Sal, I've installed that tile before but white. The layout is a little tricky . It left me with some hindsight on a cut or two, but something that only I would care about and the average Joe wouldn't catch.
Layout can be tricky, easy to overlook small pieces in the wrong spot.
I remember years ago watching tile videos and the sounds from the job sound so good and like you cant wait to get into it...until you get into it...lol job sucks my a$$
what did it cost to describe how to cut? is it that hard? to help people should show the clippings
ruclips.net/video/xeTj9cgaSU8/видео.html
Sal, caulking your corners first? To prevent the grout getting in?? I seem to find it difficult to grout after i've caulked corners. its pulls it and rips its.
Caulk the day before or go slow near the wall.
Sal DiBlasi what is the caulking for? What’s happens if grout gets in?
Хорошая работа! Спасибо!
Would it be beneficial to use an anti lippage tile leveling system for hexagon tiles?
On large ones yes, but not this size.
육각타일 시공을 정말 잘하시는군요.

많이 배우고 갑니다.
Hi Sal, I have a question about back notching floor tile. I was working with a crew that were installing 12x24 marble in a straight pattern. They were using the most amount of thinset i have ever seen under each tile. They started with a 3/4 inch trowel, then big blobs all over the notched floor and even after installation, would often pull up and add even more. I used the 3/4 trowel and then back notched the tile with the same trowel on an sharper angle to leave a half inch or so notched on the back of the tile. They did not approve of this and wanted blobs on the floor. My question is whether back notching is not acceptable on floors and also whether blobbing the floor is actually preferred to this. Thanks again.
What they did with the blobs is called spot bonding, and is probably one of the worst installation methods used to set tiles, it is frowned on by the TCNA and is a big problem in the industry. Using too much mortar on the back of the tile can also be a problem if the depth of the bond coat exceeds what the recommended thickness it was designed for. There are many different types of thinsets, and when a ticker bond coat is needed for a large tile, a LFT, or LHT mortar should be used. There is a lot more to this, and one of the main things to installing a floor, or wall correctly, is to prep the area to bring it into flatness tolerance so thick bond coats will not be needed. Here are a couple of videos that you might find interesting. ruclips.net/video/Qmb5lYJHp_Q/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/BJoPHGtukqo/видео.html
@@SalDiBlasi thank you for the reply. It was a LFT thinset and I have also used medium bed mortar when exceeding half inch of setting material. I dont think any thinset is meant to be above 5/8s of setting material under the tile IMO. I am also a dry pack guy and when I have the option I always prep the floor depending on the thickness i need with Dry pack of self levelor. Then just use my trustee half inch and off i go so Agreed on the floor prep...my main question is if you are going to build up would you blob the floor or notch the back of the tile...I thought notch to notch would be preferred to a back buttered tile and a notched and blobbed floor.
The blob as you Call it is known as spot bonding, should not be used ever.
@@SalDiBlasi Ok fair enough thats what i figured. Out of curiousity, when u need to build up unexpectedly i supposed then you would use the double notch method same as I did. I was thrown off because these guys were working in very high end homes (5mil and above) and were off put by my double notch. All the best in 2019...youve been a great help to me and I appreciate it.
@@professorkaos2781 Most guys that spot bond don't know how bad the method is, otherwise they wouldn't do it.
Nice work Sal
I am doing my shower walls with hexagon tiles...
It has its challenges
Just a DIY'r🤝
Cool 👍
Hey Sal, nice work as usual. 👍 I have a couple questions for you. Is that a euro notched trowel you're using? Also, how do like that Montolit cutter? Do you have a recommendation for a mid priced cutter? I'm looking into getting one since using my tile saw in the frigid winters around me is getting to be a real hassle. Thank you.
Yes Euro notch and love my Montolit, look into the Rubi fast for a less expensive cutter, but still very capable.
@@SalDiBlasi I'll check out the Rubi cutters, thanks for the response Sal and look forward to the next video!
Do you get sigma cutters in america I find them to be the best on the market roughly same price as rubi in uk rubi now making there stuff in Taiwan and quality way down meant to be Spanish had to take two wet cutters back in a row
@@ClaireWalker-jg8xv Yes they have Sigma cutters for sale in the U.S., I will look at those as well, thanks for the info.
Im in the u.s sigma is the best cutter ive used so far..for affordable at home diy installations i would go with the kobalt from Lowe's
can this size hexagon tile be installed inside a shower? would it weird with the four lines cut for the slope
Too big for a shower floor.
It would be nice if you showed how you started with the cuts. I'm lost
I like the hexagon tile, it looks challenging to install. Why did you decide to use a euronotch trowel? Nice job as always.
Had it, why not use it?
How much did you charge for that little job?
Not a penny more than I was paid.
man you work fast....
Good job! Lovely tiles too! Too bad they don't sell these kind of hex tiles here where I live. Which is, on other side of the globe.
have you seen hexagon tiles with a spacing of 3/8" for grout lines? and your opinions on that would be great. thanks
Well that would depend on what the tile was, how big it is and how even in size they are.
8.5x10”
@@mmahousenet Here is a rule for grout width, paraphrasing here, The size of the grout line shall be no less than 1/16" for any tile size and will be three times the difference of the size variation of the tile. So if a the average variation in size from one tile to another is 1/8" then the grout line should be 3/8" Look it up it is in the TCNA handbook.
What size spacer are you using for this floor?)
Question.sal how much would you charge for putting this kind of title per sq feet
Square foot price is a thing of the past.
@@SalDiBlasi What is cost range for your services for bathroom tile then? Amazing job!

yes
TY so much for the great vid! 💗 I'll start a hex tile job in my bathroom soon and hope it goes as smoothly AND quickly as yours did! (Wish me luck, we're putting in a corner shower with huge curved front to tile up to!😃)
Good luck with your tile job.
Looks good. However, I would have required the base board come up 1st.
How long would a job like this typically take?
Install the floor in one day, grout the next. Small floor.
@@SalDiBlasi Out of curiosity, what about subway tile on the walls of a room about twice the size? It took a contractor we hired about 5 days and another to grout
@@Theincrediblespud Not a race, whatever it takes, the important thing is that it is done right. It sometimes takes that long. I will never rush a job.
@@SalDiBlasi One thing: the result is very bumpy, so it wasn't done to an amazing standard.
I just install the same size and color type of hex floor. These tiles aren’t easy to install and are usually. It square aswell.

Anyone have any tips or tricks for planning the layout of this size hexagonal tiles in a room that's not quite square?

i was worried about marrking cuts for these kind of tile, then as soon as i saw what you are doing i was like mannn well its just like marking on a 45!
@GoFuck Yourself are you. restarted has using mirror image to mark just like on 45
Hey Sal. What size trowel on this job?
3/8 deep
Why would you not take the baseboard out and reinstall back on TOP of the tile? This is how I imagine a hack doing tile work.
How do you measure the cuts if you have the pointed angle at the wall?
Tape measure
No tricks to quickly do it?
@@jarrellflores7970 Make a template to mark your tiles, you will need two, one for the point side, one for the flat side.

How is your knees doing?
Knees are good, everything else is falling apart. 😊
Why not remove baseboards?
Good question.
👍
Hey sal. Are you an independent or are these jobs subbed to you?
Some are subbed some are my customers.
Why you didn’t pull out baseboards? That’s sloppy job
is it the tile manufacturer s set these trends? ,just put them on the market ,I dare say the people who come with the idea s of odd shape tiles and the gigantic ones dont have to fit them !
What goes around comes around, styles and designs, colors and shapes tend to come in and out, there will always be updates to the patterns and styles. there are some timeless types of tile that will never go out of style, because there is always a demand for the classic look, everything else will fade in and out. However tiles are getting bigger and that will probably not stop.
Great job sal. Pretty sad 220 outlet coming out of the floor. Like that.
Washer and dry were put right in, to never be seen again.
Hello Sal! I would like to be your helper for couple of weeks to learn more about tilling.

Sal DiBlasi can you tell us why you won't take on any helpers? Just curious, not trying to be condescending or anything.
I’ve been a tile setter is the Seattle area for the last 10 years and just to have privilege to work with you would be great. And honestly with the trick I know is enough to keep on going for years. Thanks though
I can answer why not. You would be more harm than help by asking lot of question why do this why do that so it will slow down instead of helping.
man... you are going so fast... in fact maybe to fast... "specialty' cuts (corners-edges) need some time to digest... instead of fast forward, you should slow forward...
