Tip #1 - Plan the Layout
Always start hexagon tile layout to accommodate the most obvious spot in the bathroom or shower. In this example we felt the main shower wall was the most eye catching area and started the layout there.
Tip #2 - Symmetry
Symmetry is very important, especially with hexagon tiles. Try to make tiles on either side of the room look the same and also try to avoid tiny diamonds created by cutting hexagon tiles.
Tip #3 - Horseshoer Shims and SeamClips
Hexagon tiles have 6 grout joints per tile. This might seem easy to manage but if the tile is slightly off kilter you'll be an unhappy camper. We used 1/16" horseshoe shims to maintain grout joints and Tuscan SeamClips to hold the tiles together and avoid tile lippage.
Tip #4 - Pitch Main Bathroom Floor
Any tile outside a curbless shower should slightly pitch back toward the shower pan. The same is true for hexagon tiles, slope them slightly toward the shower pan.
Tip #5 - Spacers & Dulling Tile
This hexagon tile floor was in both the shower pan and main bathroom floor. A linear drain was used but the raw edges of the tile were exposed on both sides of the linear drain. We used a Montolit diamond pad to lightly sand the raw edges and the Schluter spacer to ensure equal spacing on either side of the linear drain.

Boom Shacka Lacka mad knowledge dropped again. The little wedge clip idea is utterly fantastic for keeping tiles like that spaced properly and moving multiple tiles at ones. Keep raining wisdom guys!!! Dirty Jersey out!!!
thanks man, horseshoe shims are indispensable for hex tiles
Where do I find the wedge clips? Also is there an easy way to measure the cuts of the pointed sides of hexagon tiles?
Fantastic advice! I’ve been tiling for years and today a customer presented me with 12 boxes of porcelain hexagonal tiles 😱😱😱. Thanks for super advice.

Great tips- I'm about to do a floor like this with black hex tiles. What about those Y shaped spacers designed for hex tiles? Do you not like those? I didn't know about those seam clips- genius- def gonna get those.
Thanks for the details!
Thank you guys,
This may be a dumb question. How do you get the seam clips back out?
Rubber mallet
What spacing did you use on the hexagon tiles. 1/8" or 1/16"
He says 1/16” in the video. I wish I’d seen this before I started my bathroom, particularly the part about layout!
Is it okay to tile sections of the floor over several days? Have large job and feel like it will take a few days
what size trowel did you use for the hexagon tiles
I wish I would have watch this two weeks ago I did my bathroom floor and it was hard😳
hexagon tiles are tricky, takes a lot of patience and the right tools. How did you make out?

What about tiling hectogons
Sounds like a mission from hell
You meant octagons (8 sides) or Heptagons (7 sides) ? There are also decagons (10 sides).

Heptagons since you could fuse 2 on both top and bottom sides of left and right of it but then when you try tiling the top, it would be physically impossible to continue the pattern. It is hard to describe a configuration because of lack of visuals to present like trying to make someone visualize a dream (the most mysterious and difficult thing to explain without being unsure and thinking you sound crazy)
Thank you for a great video. Helpful information, much appreciate 👍
You dint go onto what a corner should look like
