Avicii "Wake Me Up" piano medley with songs of same chord progression for "playing by ear" lesson.

  • Hi RUclips,
As I explained in the video, this is a medley I wanted to do for a while. It exemplifies the fact that multiple pop songs share very similar (or in this case exactly the same) chord progressions. I zoomed in on my left hand to emphasize the point. In this video, the chord progression is vi-IV-I-V, or in the key of C, A minor, F major, C major, and G major. This is only a sampling of the many songs that use this very common progression.
    In order, the songs are:
    Avicci -- wake me up
    Bruno Mars -- Grenade
Kelly Clarkson -- Behind these hazel eyes
    Beyonce -- If I were a boy
    Avril Lavigne -- Complicated
Celine Dion -- A new day has come
Joan Osborne -- What if god was one of us
Eagle Eye Cherry -- Save tonight
Sarah McLachlan -- Building a mystery
    Toto -- Africa
    Heart -- Alone

I'm so happy that you included A New Day Has Come and Building a Mystery. Those are two of my favorite songs.

thank you so much for explaining this! I play by ear, too and I taught myself how to play the piano. Now I know what to say to people when they ask me how I do it.

I'm a big Elton John fan here. I've heard Elton himself stated in a couple interviews long ago that most of his music were just chord progressions as you've stated here.
It's amazing how so many songs can be created out of the same chord progression. I have noticed though that there are many songs that sounded the same but just couldn't quit point it out. Now I know why! Thanks!

Michael, you truly understand music so well, and you communicate that so well also. Would love to see you perform live someday, somehow, some way, as I am such a fan. May never be possible, but that said, all things are possible with God, and you definitely have a God-given talent, my friend. All the best 2 U always!!

Great! I noticed that a lot of songs have the same chords or one basic chord it goes back to and right now I'm working on a Disney medley in that way. You are an extraordinary pianist. I hope one day I can be as talented as you are! Also--it would be cool to have more videos of you talking. It's nice to see a personality (:

Also, wow, your hands are so awesomely big. I wish I could stretch a 10th, but alas, an octave is my limit...
P.S. You are an inspiration to this a newly graduated med student - I am hoping I can continue playing piano even when working insanely too!

Do you sometimes play backings to a vocalist? and if you do so, are you supporting them with the melody with the right hand or are you just playing the chords with a nice rhythm? would be nice to hear, greetings from germany
