As a teenager, I attempted to save a drowning friend that could not swim but was ashamed to admit it. He jumped into 10 foot deep water. He climbed up me like a ladder and took me under. If several others had not been present, we would both have likely drowned. No matter how good a swimmer you are, if the person panics, they will put a death grip on you. Don’t try it ! I realize that it would be really hard, if not impossible, to watch a loved one in such a predicament.
Same thing happened to me.. I helped a 250lbs plus individual at a boat launch once get back on land.. 10 foot roughly.. It happened so quick but I was beat up pretty bad..
Thank God you both was ok this happen to me when I was young as well one summer my brother was the only one who save my life I was so scared I thought I was gonna die when my brother realized he didn't see me anymore he went looking I was trying to climb on his whole body like I was part of his skin drowning the both of us after so long my brother was taking in so much water man just writing this I'm feeling so sad he had to leave me go up to get air when he came back to me he touch me I felt his body he was trying to tell me he would have to knock me out to save my air cause I was gonna kill both of us omg my heart in mind is feeling so sad sorry let me finish I finally gave in I allowed him to take control of me so save my life including his he finally got me out i passed out woke up to adults looking at us my brother never gave up there was adults around it's sad to think no one help us I was 13yr my brother was 14yr its crazy I'm 44 now in that day to think of it is still scary. Prayers for any one who have went tho anything as such most of all prayers go to the young man family.
I am a Red Cross certified lifeguard and we are taught very early in training how to deal with that panicked swimmer. When they jump on you, you just go underwater while pushing up on the person. They will let go and you can come up behind them and try to calm them. You do need to be a strong swimmer to save a drowning victim.
El Lobo you are absolutely right I panic so bad as a teenager when I was drowning I scratched my friend all up trying to hold on to him so tight and almost took him under but he managed to save both of us you have to physically punch them in their face to calm them down
I can't even begin to imagine what their family especially their parents are going through. Losing two kids simultaneously is definitely a hard pill to swallow
Two brothers drowned in my small town when I was in middle school. Their sister was in my class. The whole town showed up for the funeral, literally one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen. Their poor mom couldn’t even walk, she was totally broken, mentally, spiritually and physically. The sister was never the same, it was just awful for the whole town, they were good kids. Same story, younger brother got in trouble, big bro jumped into help and then they both died. They were 18 and 21. Ugh, this poor family, so sorry for them.

I'm a Jamaican, and I know what it's like to see children grow into accomplished adults. It's a dream come true to see your kids strive and become successful only for it to end so quickly in tragedy. So utterly heartbreaking.

Interesting things I learned from my friend, a former lifeguard a few years back. Trying to save someone who is afraid and struggling in the water is extremely difficult and dangerous. Yes, even lifeguards know this and use techniques to go to the backside of a person, where victim cannot see you and “fight” to grab you. I heard a statistic from my friend who was a lifeguard that 9 times out of 10, a person going into water rescuing an individual will drown themselves as well. That is partly because the adrenaline etcetera of person in peril will pull you down. If they were to “go limp” and remain still, they can be pulled easily but they don’t. The mind probably won’t let them. I remember going in water to save my idiotic sibling (sorry, it is true). She ignored warnings posted in Hawaii and nearly drowned herself and her daughter in ocean. When I came back to her after child was safe on shore, she was scratching at me like a wild cat and nearly drowned us both. Even after screaming at her what to do and not do, she refused and we almost died. To this day, she never expressed appreciation or personal responsibility and tells people all I cared about is my 👙 bathing suit ripping. I thank The Lord this sweet family knows Jesus Christ and that they will be reunited one day soon. RIP dear Brothers!
you swim up to the panicked person and pop them in the nose. this will deflate their panic and stun them, they will go all limp and you can tow them in.
Horrible horrible story. My heart goes out to their parents, family, friends and anyone else who knew these two young men. May their bodies rest in peace. So sorry to hear this news. So tragic.
My heart goes out to this family, especially their parents, sisters and grandparents. I've never lost a child but lost my granddaughter in May. I can't imagine the exponentially difficult grief this family feels losing two sons at once. May God give them the peace and comfort only He can. I'm so glad they have such a supportive community and church family. They will need them and their support for a long, long time.

My Heart goes out too the family 2 BEAUTIFUL YOUNG MEN ARE NOW 2 DEVINE ANGELS BLESSiNGS PRAYERS & MY DEEPEST CONDOLENCES....BUT IF YOU ASK ME THERE IS MORE TO THIS STORY SOMETHING JUST DOESN'T SOUND RIGHT WHEN WE just SEEN 20 PLUS PEOPLE AND KIDS JUMPING OFF THE SAME BRIDGE? THEY ARE ISLAND BOYS YOU REALLY THINK THEY WOULD OF TOOK THAT LEAP IF THEY FELT THEY WOULDN'T MAKE IT ? I HAVE SEEN FOOTAGE FROM JAMAICA OF SWIMING AND DIVING SITES AND THEY HAVE SOME OF THE BEST ..IT'S HIGHLY LIKELY THESE BOYS GREW UP IN WATER PRETTYNSURE COMING FROM THE ISLAND OF JAMAICA AND ALL IT'S really sad but I really hope they find out what truly happened & the other young mans remains in tact so that the family can give them both the proper burial and rest They Deserve .
I am heartbroken by this tragedy. These two young men sound like they were two amazing humans who had a long life of success, and dreams ahead of them. I am so very sorry to their brave family, and friends. May God hold all of them so tight in his bright, shining light. My prayers will always be with them.
Very sad. Situations like this occur just about every summer and sometimes several times a year where Lake Huron feeds into the St. Clair River on the Canadian side. Kids and adults jump into the river and do not realize the power of the water. I wish that they would put up a plaque with the names of those that drowned to discourage people from jumping off of there.
This isn’t the same conditions, in my youth, jumped off that bridge and have seen many do it. Not a tall bridge, nor particularly fast water. Still a sad loss, don’t get me wrong.

Please obey the signs. There is a reason they have a no jumping or diving from the bridge sign in place. Signs are not there to make people not have fun. They are there to save lives. RIP to the young men.

As a fellow Jamaican I can tell you'll this. We are very skeptical and cautious when it comes to trying or doing something different from the norm. I tink there is more to this story ,and I dont feel these two brothers jumped .for one the family in Jamaica is saying these brother cant swim and they don't even go to the beaches or river in Jamaica so why wud they jump? Something isnt rite I can feel it in my spirit. Where are the other persons who were there? And why jump off a bridge in late evening. Come on guys this needs to be properly investigated.

Mm..good point 😔 I wonder who else was around at the time... Still probably best to just let them mourn and go from there. My aunt lost all her kids and got very hung up on trying to pin them all on someone else. One may have been a murder. The others suicide or accidental od. Sometimes speculating foul play makes the procress worse and more confusing..

I once read a statistic that the most common form of multiple death was double drowning, where one person gets in trouble, and the other tries to save them. The drowning one panics and pulls the rescuer down.
That makes sense. Not sure if it's true, but someone quoted 9/10 lifeguard deaths are from them getting pulled down during rescues. Maybe two people going to help should to be normalized, so they can essentially fight to disarm the terrified person, then help each other get the person out.
In lifeguard training that peril is discussed thoroughly. You are told to size up your rescue, stop five feet away and try to talk calmly to them, then circle around and approach them from behind, putting them in a carry mode. And yes, sadly, shootings are likely now the number one cause of multiple deaths. A sad state of affairs. My heart breaks for this family.

This breaks my heart. I grew up around the corner from a wonderful family. They had twin boys and two daughters. One of the twins went into the Army, the other went into the Navy. While on leave visiting their family, they both were swimming in a large body of water. One of the twins got a cramp in his leg and started to panic. His brother tried to save him but the wouldn't stop dragging him underwater. One drowned the other lived and the family was devastated.
I'm told that it is dangerous to try and save a person who is drowning, unless you are a very strong swimmer. You actually have to deliver a solid punch in most cases to get cooperation in order to save them.

This happens all the time at the Sacandaga lake bridge and they have the same signs. People don't understand that when the lake is down, you're going to hit the bottom, and the bottom is 20 feet of loose silt. You don't come back up and there's no way for divers to find you embedded in the lake bottom.
They found the one man though, if that was the case neither would have come back up. They appeared the same stature as siblings and their fate would have been the same- gravity not being something you can fight. He most likely got pushed downstream by the current.
Some people don't comprehend basic physics well enough to understand that they'll gain significant momentum on the way to the water and that the water doesn't have the density to compensate for that and prevent them from going more than a few yards under like diving at a pool. And they definitely don't understand the potential force of the impact. It may seem so obvious to us what the outcome is going to be when jumping off a large bridge but truly some people don't get it and when they see danger signs they think fun police. The Golden Gate Bridge is a notorious intentional unaliving destination and yet I once had to explain to an adult from out of state that going there to jump off just to say he had needed to be taken off his to do list. He insisted that people jumped there all the time and some died due to being stupid about it so they made it illegal for anybody to jump so that stupid people wouldn't die. Multiple people had to explain why that ironic argument wasn't accurate. He eventually said we had convinced him it was too dangerous but some of my friends made a point of taking him out there and driving him across the bridge (which he'd never seen in person before) while reiterating everything to make sure he truly understood. I wasn't there but they said he seemed really embarrassed. They saved that guy from death or at the very least going to jail in the process of trying.
@@Skitdora2010 Not really. No two people are going to jump in the same. Its not like throwing two identical darts at an identical velocity. Looking at the bridge though that they jumped off of and the bay next to it, its not the same as a lake. I haven't looked it up but if the tide was going out, they could have just been swept out with no real chance of being able to swim back. There isn't really a "downstream" there. There's a bay on one side and some coves on the other. You're right though, with the clarity of the water, they probably didn't get stuck. or they would have been found.
I'm honestly surprised this happened seeing both are Jamaican and they tend to be great swimmers. Plus it looks like pretty still water, so I'm confused on how this could happen.

I'm so sorry for the loss of the parent, family, and friends. I pray for their healing and peace😞 My auntie has a beach house. My brother whom is an excellent swimmer went into the water. The under water tide grabbed him under. My aunt and mother went into get him but couldn't swim themselves. One of the other homeowners jumped off his boat and saved my brother...who was at the bottom of the lake. Water is unpredictable. Even if you're an excellent swimmer it still can overcome you. If you can't swim please don't try to jump in and save a loved one cuz it may take you under as well...and the recuse efforts would shift focus on you than the original victim. Be safe everyone
This is so very sad. Nothing sinister here, thankfully, a daring act that many others have done successfully. Maybe the current was too strong, only God knows for sure, at least they are together. I feel so sorry for the parents who will suffer in the hearts for the rest of their lives no doubt. @@shellybelly8037 I too thought suicide but the bridge is way too low for anyone to think they can suicide from that bridge. As the news reports explain, it's the under tow, sometimes the current is just way more powerful than the person realizes, especially for people who have never taken swimming lessons. The bridge is very low to the water, and the water itself doesn't look that deep or wide, so even inexperienced swimmers would think they could handle it, not knowing about the undertow.
@@jaspermartin7444 are you kidding me- I have jumped actually back flipped off that bridge with my sons many times and YES when tide going out it’s easy to drown yourself if you want to BUT I’m not buying suicide either! - inlets are dangerous and tides changing are the problem under tows exist in waves going back out - I had to grab my own son after jumping off that bridge when tide turned - we were there for hours jumping when tide coming IN- WHAT a uneducated comment -
@Ken Turberrt Has it been reported that they could not swim? If not, we should not assume that they could not swim. A rip current or undertow can take out anyone, swimmer or not.
So sad, just a couple of kids having fun that turned into a tragedy. I think a lot of us have done something that could have got us injured or killed, but by the grace of God and luck, we survived. May these two brothers, who will always be together, rest in the sweetest of peace.

As a mother of 2 boys, one swims the other doesn't: I always told the swimmer to NEVER let his younger brother get in water because of his fear. He obeyed. My condolences to both parents and the family.
Hopefully both your sons have the opportunity to train and learn how to swim in different circumstances . Every situation’s different. Especially different currents and rip tides. Y’all have to realize it’s easier said then done. Even trained swimmers have issues
This is horrible. Deepest Sympathies to the family and friends. I jumped off of that same bridge in mid 70's. If my boyfriend hadn't been waiting for me at the bottom, I may not have made it out. He couldn't reach me, but gave me instructions on how to get out. The current was really swift.

I was just thinking that... Listening to the family friend talk about these young men. Made me think of my on daughter I lost 9/14/2019. She had just made 28 years old 9/11. She loved people and helping people. She saw the good in everyone because she knew how to bring the good out. She had just gotten her Masters in S.W a week before we lost her.
Such a sad story my thoughts go out to the family and friends of these young men. I have 2 boys and I can't imagine what their going through. Hopefully young people in the future will think twice about going into water without a life guard present. My friend almost drowned from another person grabbing on her while swimming because they were drowning. Both were so close to going under luckily the life guard jumped in and saved the lady drowning and got her off my friend. This person was at least 3 times the weight of my friend and it was getting bad very quickly. You could tell this person was starting to panic. Very scary situation.
That bridge looks like an easy jump.But if you thought you would just learn how to swim in a moment than tuff luck .Swimming takes effort and lessons don't jump if you can't swim.

As a teenager, I attempted to save a drowning friend that could not swim but was ashamed to admit it. He jumped into 10 foot deep water. He climbed up me like a ladder and took me under. If several others had not been present, we would both have likely drowned. No matter how good a swimmer you are, if the person panics, they will put a death grip on you. Don’t try it ! I realize that it would be really hard, if not impossible, to watch a loved one in such a predicament.
Same thing happened to me.. I helped a 250lbs plus individual at a boat launch once get back on land.. 10 foot roughly.. It happened so quick but I was beat up pretty bad..
My mom n i almost drowned to death because this happened when she tried teaching me to swim.
Thank God you both was ok this happen to me when I was young as well one summer my brother was the only one who save my life I was so scared I thought I was gonna die when my brother realized he didn't see me anymore he went looking I was trying to climb on his whole body like I was part of his skin drowning the both of us after so long my brother was taking in so much water man just writing this I'm feeling so sad he had to leave me go up to get air when he came back to me he touch me I felt his body he was trying to tell me he would have to knock me out to save my air cause I was gonna kill both of us omg my heart in mind is feeling so sad sorry let me finish I finally gave in I allowed him to take control of me so save my life including his he finally got me out i passed out woke up to adults looking at us my brother never gave up there was adults around it's sad to think no one help us I was 13yr my brother was 14yr its crazy I'm 44 now in that day to think of it is still scary. Prayers for any one who have went tho anything as such most of all prayers go to the young man family.
I am a Red Cross certified lifeguard and we are taught very early in training how to deal with that panicked swimmer. When they jump on you, you just go underwater while pushing up on the person. They will let go and you can come up behind them and try to calm them. You do need to be a strong swimmer to save a drowning victim.

I can't even begin to imagine what their family especially their parents are going through. Losing two kids simultaneously is definitely a hard pill to swallow

Two brothers drowned in my small town when I was in middle school. Their sister was in my class. The whole town showed up for the funeral, literally one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen. Their poor mom couldn’t even walk, she was totally broken, mentally, spiritually and physically. The sister was never the same, it was just awful for the whole town, they were good kids. Same story, younger brother got in trouble, big bro jumped into help and then they both died. They were 18 and 21. Ugh, this poor family, so sorry for them.

Interesting things I learned from my friend, a former lifeguard a few years back. Trying to save someone who is afraid and struggling in the water is extremely difficult and dangerous. Yes, even lifeguards know this and use techniques to go to the backside of a person, where victim cannot see you and “fight” to grab you. I heard a statistic from my friend who was a lifeguard that 9 times out of 10, a person going into water rescuing an individual will drown themselves as well. That is partly because the adrenaline etcetera of person in peril will pull you down. If they were to “go limp” and remain still, they can be pulled easily but they don’t. The mind probably won’t let them.
I remember going in water to save my idiotic sibling (sorry, it is true). She ignored warnings posted in Hawaii and nearly drowned herself and her daughter in ocean. When I came back to her after child was safe on shore, she was scratching at me like a wild cat and nearly drowned us both. Even after screaming at her what to do and not do, she refused and we almost died. To this day, she never expressed appreciation or personal responsibility and tells people all I cared about is my 👙 bathing suit ripping.
I thank The Lord this sweet family knows Jesus Christ and that they will be reunited one day soon. RIP dear Brothers!

I am heartbroken by this tragedy. These two young men sound like they were two amazing humans who had a long life of success, and dreams ahead of them. I am so very sorry to their brave family, and friends. May God hold all of them so tight in his bright, shining light. My prayers will always be with them.

Very sad. Situations like this occur just about every summer and sometimes several times a year where Lake Huron feeds into the St. Clair River on the Canadian side. Kids and adults jump into the river and do not realize the power of the water. I wish that they would put up a plaque with the names of those that drowned to discourage people from jumping off of there.
This isn’t the same conditions, in my youth, jumped off that bridge and have seen many do it. Not a tall bridge, nor particularly fast water. Still a sad loss, don’t get me wrong.

As a fellow Jamaican I can tell you'll this. We are very skeptical and cautious when it comes to trying or doing something different from the norm. I tink there is more to this story ,and I dont feel these two brothers jumped .for one the family in Jamaica is saying these brother cant swim and they don't even go to the beaches or river in Jamaica so why wud they jump? Something isnt rite I can feel it in my spirit. Where are the other persons who were there? And why jump off a bridge in late evening. Come on guys this needs to be properly investigated.

I once read a statistic that the most common form of multiple death was double drowning, where one person gets in trouble, and the other tries to save them. The drowning one panics and pulls the rescuer down.

That makes sense. Not sure if it's true, but someone quoted 9/10 lifeguard deaths are from them getting pulled down during rescues. Maybe two people going to help should to be normalized, so they can essentially fight to disarm the terrified person, then help each other get the person out.

You are told to size up your rescue, stop five feet away and try to talk calmly to them, then circle around and approach them from behind, putting them in a carry mode. This breaks my heart. I grew up around the corner from a wonderful family. They had twin boys and two daughters. One of the twins went into the Army, the other went into the Navy. While on leave visiting their family, they both were swimming in a large body of water. One of the twins got a cramp in his leg and started to panic. His brother tried to save him but the wouldn't stop dragging him underwater. One drowned the other lived and the family was devastated.

I'm told that it is dangerous to try and save a person who is drowning, unless you are a very strong swimmer. You actually have to deliver a solid punch in most cases to get cooperation in order to save them.

This happens all the time at the Sacandaga lake bridge and they have the same signs. People don't understand that when the lake is down, you're going to hit the bottom, and the bottom is 20 feet of loose silt. You don't come back up and there's no way for divers to find you embedded in the lake bottom.

They found the one man though, if that was the case neither would have come back up. They appeared the same stature as siblings and their fate would have been the same- gravity not being something you can fight. He most likely got pushed downstream by the current.

Some people don't comprehend basic physics well enough to understand that they'll gain significant momentum on the way to the water and that the water doesn't have the density to compensate for that and prevent them from going more than a few yards under like diving at a pool. And they definitely don't understand the potential force of the impact. It may seem so obvious to us what the outcome is going to be when jumping off a large bridge but truly some people don't get it and when they see danger signs they think fun police. The Golden Gate Bridge is a notorious intentional unaliving destination and yet I once had to explain to an adult from out of state that going there to jump off just to say he had needed to be taken off his to do list. He insisted that people jumped there all the time and some died due to being stupid about it so they made it illegal for anybody to jump so that stupid people wouldn't die. Multiple people had to explain why that ironic argument wasn't accurate. He eventually said we had convinced him it was too dangerous but some of my friends made a point of taking him out there and driving him across the bridge (which he'd never seen in person before) while reiterating everything to make sure he truly understood. I wasn't there but they said he seemed really embarrassed. They saved that guy from death or at the very least going to jail in the process of trying.
@@Skitdora2010 Not really. No two people are going to jump in the same. Its not like throwing two identical darts at an identical velocity.
Looking at the bridge though that they jumped off of and the bay next to it, its not the same as a lake. I haven't looked it up but if the tide was going out, they could have just been swept out with no real chance of being able to swim back. There isn't really a "downstream" there. There's a bay on one side and some coves on the other.
You're right though, with the clarity of the water, they probably didn't get stuck. or they would have been found.

I'm honestly surprised this happened seeing both are Jamaican and they tend to be great swimmers. Plus it looks like pretty still water, so I'm confused on how this could happen.

My auntie has a beach house. My brother whom is an excellent swimmer went into the water. The under water tide grabbed him under. My aunt and mother went into get him but couldn't swim themselves. One of the other homeowners jumped off his boat and saved my brother...who was at the bottom of the lake.
Water is unpredictable. Even if you're an excellent swimmer it still can overcome you.
If you can't swim please don't try to jump in and save a loved one cuz it may take you under as well...and the recuse efforts would shift focus on you than the original victim.

@@shellybelly8037 I too thought suicide but the bridge is way too low for anyone to think they can suicide from that bridge. As the news reports explain, it's the under tow, sometimes the current is just way more powerful than the person realizes, especially for people who have never taken swimming lessons. The bridge is very low to the water, and the water itself doesn't look that deep or wide, so even inexperienced swimmers would think they could handle it, not knowing about the undertow.
He will wash up in weeks to come - sharks HATE human flesh so they won’t eat him whole like they do the seals-
@@jaspermartin7444 are you kidding me- I have jumped actually back flipped off that bridge with my sons many times and YES when tide going out it’s easy to drown yourself if you want to BUT I’m not buying suicide either! - inlets are dangerous and tides changing are the problem under tows exist in waves going back out - I had to grab my own son after jumping off that bridge when tide turned - we were there for hours jumping when tide coming IN- WHAT a uneducated comment -
@Ken Turberrt Has it been reported that they could not swim? If not, we should not assume that they could not swim. A rip current or undertow can take out anyone, swimmer or not.
So sad, just a couple of kids having fun that turned into a tragedy. I think a lot of us have done something that could have got us injured or killed, but by the grace of God and luck, we survived. May these two brothers, who will always be together, rest in the sweetest of peace.

As a mother of 2 boys, one swims the other doesn't: I always told the swimmer to NEVER let his younger brother get in water because of his fear. He obeyed. My condolences to both parents and the family.
Teach him to swim ASAP it's dangerous not too!
Hopefully both your sons have the opportunity to train and learn how to swim in different circumstances . Every situation’s different. Especially different currents and rip tides. Y’all have to realize it’s easier said then done. Even trained swimmers have issues

This is horrible. Deepest Sympathies to the family and friends. I jumped off of that same bridge in mid 70's. If my boyfriend hadn't been waiting for me at the bottom, I may not have made it out. He couldn't reach me, but gave me instructions on how to get out. The current was really swift.

I was just thinking that... Listening to the family friend talk about these young men. Made me think of my on daughter I lost 9/14/2019. She had just made 28 years old 9/11. She loved people and helping people. She saw the good in everyone because she knew how to bring the good out. She had just gotten her Masters in S.W a week before we lost her.

Such a sad story my thoughts go out to the family and friends of these young men. I have 2 boys and I can't imagine what their going through. Hopefully young people in the future will think twice about going into water without a life guard present. My friend almost drowned from another person grabbing on her while swimming because they were drowning. Both were so close to going under luckily the life guard jumped in and saved the lady drowning and got her off my friend. This person was at least 3 times the weight of my friend and it was getting bad very quickly. You could tell this person was starting to panic. Very scary situation.

That bridge looks like an easy jump.But if you thought you would just learn how to swim in a moment than tuff luck .Swimming takes effort and lessons don't jump if you can't swim.

It's so strange that two people who lived on an island their whole life drowned and one was an experienced swimmer...but they can't find his body... and then we see footage of the groups of locals jumping off the bridge...so strange...this is a shocking story! I've never heard of this. They should place safety equipment around that bridge. I'm so sorry for the family!
The water doesn't care if you think you know how to swim. Lots of swimmers have drowned in unfamiliar waters.
