- A Florida college student was shot and killed on Sunday in Alabama trying to protect himself and his girlfriend after they were apparently tricked and held at gunpoint by a woman who claimed she was having trouble with her car, according to the Clay County (Alabama) Sheriff's Office.

This sounds like a classic case of the Good Samaritan where a man tries to help a total stranger and they try to rob him. Things like this are the reason in a nutshell why most folks don't even take a chance on helping someone

I truly believe criminals have it easier today than at any point in history when it comes to the consequences of their actions. What actually happened here is this "simple, sweet, silly" guy (according to the reporter) had problems with authority (hence the hair, the ear studs, and the shades), so when he was robbed at gunpoint, those behavioral issues surfaced and he fought back so that he wouldn't look weak in front of his girlfriend, but hands will seldom beat a weapon if the guy with the weapon knows what he's doing. That's my analysis. Stop taking social media pictures and capitulate to the robbers' demands.

Professional tip: If you ever see someone pulled over on the side of the road asking for help, DO NOT get out and assist them. Don't even park your vehicle. Instead, drive up and ask them if they'd like for you to call the police so THEY can come assist them. If they say no, or if they insist on you getting out and helping them yourself, then ram your foot on the gas pedal and drive off. Anybody who's sincerely in a desperate situation will jump at the chance for anybody to help them. If they don't want police showing up, that's a huge red flag and you shouldn't even bother asking a follow-up question after that.
EDIT: Or, alternatively, ask them if they want you to call anyone for help. I understand that a great many people have very reasonable and justifiable reasons why they wouldn't want to deal with police. So just ask if you should call anybody, or like AAA or something. The point is to offer to bring in more people into the situation. More people are tougher to rob, so if the person rejects any sort of assistance, THEN floor it.

Maybe he should have capitulated and given her his bank account number and wallet. Based on the photos and videos, he seems like a nonsensical person and not the sharpest tool in the box, so I'm guessing that he and his girlfriend weren't exactly models of sangfroid whilst they were being held at gunpoint and might have even escalated the situation. Had he just given the armed woman all his money, all he needed to do was go to the police, and they'd track down the illegal activity on his account and catch her, but instead he wanted to be a big shot in front of his girlfriend. If you're not an alpha male, don't try to handle the situation as such.

He was two bus rides away from where he needed to be (England so maybe 6 miles max) I pulled up and give him£5 through a small gap in my window because I had my daughter in the car and you can’t be too careful. I told him he could get a day ticket for under £5 and he could ride as many buses as he wanted that day for that price. I couldn’t pass him by in that heat but I couldn’t let him in my car either even though I was going in the direction he wanted to go. It’s a shit world we live in now.

My guess is that the girlfriend escalated the situation, probably by yelling that "they weren't going to give her any money and she was lucky that they even stopped to help her" and the boyfriend probably chimed in too, or maybe he was the one being disrespectful, but there was definitely some language that triggered the woman to fire her gun at them. Let's not pretend that the girl and her ex-bf were as friendly as can be and completely calm and compliant. That's just not how it goes here.

If you ever see someone on the side of a road who looks like they need help (especially at night) the best thing to do is to call 911 and tell them to help those people and keep driving. It sucks because it could be someone who genuinely needs help but you can never be too careful these days. Traffickers/robbers like to portray themselves as people who need help to get peoples guard down as they attack.
