I work at a grocery store, and one day a deaf woman came through my line. She had a helper with her, but I felt so bad I didn’t know what she was saying! These are helping me so much, and I’m watching and trying to learn ASL as much as I can. Thank you!

This is so very hard to memorize when I don't have anyone to sign with and practice with. Everyone in my family including myself can hear just fine. I can not get them to show any interest in signing. I'm trying very hard to put all this to muscle memory. So far I have the alphabet and 1-100 down pat and can spell anything but all the signs for objects, actions etc is very overwhelming for my 53 year old brain.
Yes, that can make learning the language very difficult. Knowing the alphabet and the numbers 1-100 is a great start! My parents learned sign language in their 50s as well and had a hard time with feeling overwhelmed at times too. I have the same problem with my family! What i do is watch the video, or read a lesson, and i write down every sign in the video in a notebook. Say i learnt pop, apple, banana, and grape in one lesson. i would watch the teacher sign it a couple times, write the words down, and then practice without the video. And if you need to check, you can o back to the video!
i’m really proud of myself, i’m teaching my baby cousin (4 years old) some sign language! i’m getting better at it, also! i’ve taught her “eat/food” and “drink”, so far! 😄😄
I taught my kids to sign before they could speak and it made it so much easier to communicate and they used it for a few years after they started speaking as well!
I’m trying to learn ASL 1. Because i have less than half of my hearing 2. I’m working at a summer camp, and you never know what could happen 3. It’s a great set of skills to learn How I’m learning? Day 1. Watch the first part, write down what I should know Day 2. Review signs, watch the second video, write down and practice what I should know Day 3. Review, 3rd part, write down what I should know, practice Day 4. Review, 4th part, write down and practice everything I learned, review what I don’t remember I hope this helps someone!
My 16 month old is my practice partner. I am teaching him sign language by learning myself. It allows me to practice and its so cool to see him respond back.

Thats tough. I actually plan on creating online practice groups since there are many that are in your same situation that would like to learn but dont have others locally to practice with. I'll let you know once I get it up and running
@Chris Gorges you're awesome! I'm a Portuguese speaker, living in the USA and I've been learning a lot ASL from your videos! The only thing about sign language I knew before was the alphabet. I learned the alphabet when I was 12 yrs old because I had a friend who was deaf and never forgot it! I work in a grocery store, last week they hired a new employee and he's deaf. When I heard about him, I just came on RUclips looking for some sign language lesson because I really would like to be helpful. I thought that sign language was something universal but I found out that it's not! Learning ASL is double difficult for me because English is not my native language! I've been watching your videos several times during the day and guess what? I was totally able to introduce myself, to introduce other people to him, to say where I'm from and ask about him, to ask him to slow down, to show me how to sign kitchen (because I work in the kitchen). But Chris, when he answered me, It was extremely difficulty to me to understand him and I think because I was watching him and trying to translate to Portuguese, 🙄 I felt like a parrot able to speak but not able to understand the answers! Is there some specific tip in my case? Thanks a lot for sharing with us all your knowledge about ASL! May I ask you what was your first motivation to learn ASL??? 😉
I took asl for half a year in high school and I've lost almost all memory of it. I want to relearn and this is helping so much. I now remember how we would write out sentences such as "i want to eat" and change it to "i want eat" to help our minds get accustomed to it. I also just signed a sentence i made up based off of this video. Thank you! Subscribed and I hope to absorb more 🤩
Depends on the person, how much they immerse themselves in the language, and other factors (and your definition of fluency) but for some it can be as little as a year or so ... mileage certainly does vary though. The more committed you are, the faster you'll learn.

Great question, you could actually do both, although in proper ASL the subject (or topic) would go first, so if your primarily talking about lunch, it could go like this- Lunch You Want What? Although, I've seen it signed a variety of ways

Good tutorials! I have a new employee in my department. With masks she isn't able to read lips without people taking down their masks. Not recommended in our current environment. I'm learning as to make it safer for her and everyone we work with.

Just out of curiosity, how do companies like McDonald's and Starbucks get their own sign? Do the companies come up with a sign themselves, or do members of the ASL/Deaf community come up with the sign on their own and it spreads throughout the community?
I just bumped into videos and I am learning and refreshing. Can you do some church words? Like I'm learning to translate for church but I am such a beginner but they want me to go ahead and learn so I can practice while at church went we have deaf friends and family members coming to church. Some of the words I already know is church, Bible, Jesus, Christ, cross, holy, Glory, forever, Heaven, God, but could you do some of the Bible or biblical words that are little tougher besides the ones I just listed?? I do no the sign for blood. For me the hardest thing is translating what someone else to say LOL that's where the practice. And sometimes I get frustrated cuz I feel like I'm not going to learn it I love you so much and I know that I can do it it just I need practice Partners LOL

Could you have signed the sentences HUNGRY ME/I, EAT I WANT, HUNGRY I EAT I WANT, LUNCH YOU WANT GO, LUNCH YOU WANT GO WHERE? Those are how I thought you could sign them also. They are all in Topic +Referent+Comment order. Are those word orders also correct?
Great question and I appreciate your sentences. I personally don't know, although Laura Berg Life might be a good person to ask, she is Canadian and is an ASL instructor. It is fairly common for popular store's or brands to be initialized, so it may be signed as "T-H Coffee"
Depends on which mode of sign language you are using and who you are communicating with. Some Deaf prefer that you don't mouth at all and sign ASL focusing on concepts, facial expressions, and mouthmorphemes. Others on the other hand may prefer you mouth words as you sign them in an English order (which is a sign language mode referenced to as PSE, Pidgined Signed English). So, get to know the person you are communicating with and adapt to their preferences if possible 🙂
@@ChrisGorges Thanks, that makes sense. I figure in situations where one is communicating to deaf and hearing people at once, PSE makes the most sense. But ASL grammar order is ideal when communicating primarily to ASL users.
When asking questions does the question word go at the end of the sentence always or is there a rule that applies? When signing “Do you want to go out to lunch” you sign You want lunch but “Where do you want to eat?” you sign You want eat where?. When it’s an open ended question, example 2, the question word (where) is at the end of the sentence as opposed to a yes or no answer is signed directly (example 1)?
I'm not really seeing the use of what (or do-do what) as an identifier in sentences. Is that casually omitted in advanced ASL, or are we not using it yet because it's advanced? Or do we just not use them at all, anymore?
Chris, I am trying to learn from your videos. I don't know if its just me that sees them, but the bottom of your videos have captions in black boxes that happen to block much of what your hands are doing. I am really struggling with some of the signs because of the captions. How do I get rid of them? Slower movements would have been nice as well, but I would be happy if the captions weren't there or just somewhere else on the screen. I love your videos otherwise and share them with people
I actually did have a quick question! I am just now trying to learn sign language for future purposes to have conversations with people. I am wondering if all article words are not used. Like, do we ever include article words when we do sign language or are they always left out?
Sentence/question sentence I made. English: Hello my name is _ _ _ _ _ _ _. How about yours? In Signs grammar: Hello My name _ _ _ _ _ _ _ .How About yours? (in the blanks you finger spell your name.)
Either way would be understood, although usually just the finger is more associated with things like “tisk tisk” or “nu-huh” whereas moving the whole hand would better convey the meaning of “where”
So how would I properly speak when asking questions? I know non deaf people usually speak while signing. Would I say “What do you want to eat or do you want eat what?” I’m talking about what would come out of my mouth not the actually signing. Does that make sense?

We taught our daughter the signs for “more, eat, drink, milk, sleepy.” She was about two years old and this was before we had the internet.
I taught my kids to sign before they could speak and it made it so much easier to communicate and they used it for a few years after they started speaking as well!

About how long do you think it would take to be fluent in sign? I am committed and really would like to become an interpreter.

Good tutorials! I have a new employee in my department. With masks she isn't able to read lips without people taking down their masks. Not recommended in our current environment. I'm learning as to make it safer for her and everyone we work with.

Just out of curiosity, how do companies like McDonald's and Starbucks get their own sign? Do the companies come up with a sign themselves, or do members of the ASL/Deaf community come up with the sign on their own and it spreads throughout the community?

How was it?
I just bumped into videos and I am learning and refreshing. Can you do some church words? Like I'm learning to translate for church but I am such a beginner but they want me to go ahead and learn so I can practice while at church went we have deaf friends and family members coming to church. Some of the words I already know is church, Bible, Jesus, Christ, cross, holy, Glory, forever, Heaven, God, but could you do some of the Bible or biblical words that are little tougher besides the ones I just listed?? I do no the sign for blood.
For me the hardest thing is translating what someone else to say LOL that's where the practice. And sometimes I get frustrated cuz I feel like I'm not going to learn it I love you so much and I know that I can do it it just I need practice Partners LOL

Thanks so much for your videos! Super easy to follow and unlike some other ASL beginner/learning courses I've found at other platforms yours seems more...approachable. JUST getting started, and obviously everyone is different, but what would you suggest in terms of hours a day practicing/learning? I'm quarantining and unemployed so I've got all the time in the world... Just don't want to burn out. Thanks again!
Thanks, I'm glad that you are finding the videos useful. My suggestion would be to start small and work your way up. Better to have small wins that inspire you to do more than have a big fail that discourages you from continuing at all. Could you have signed the sentences HUNGRY ME/I, EAT I WANT, HUNGRY I EAT I WANT, LUNCH YOU WANT GO, LUNCH YOU WANT GO WHERE? Those are how I thought you could sign them also. They are all in Topic +Referent+Comment order. Are those word orders also correct?

I'm from Canada..... need to know the sign for Tim Horton's. Would it just be a "T" and "H" followed by the coffee sign?
I personally don't know, although Laura Berg Life might be a good person to ask, she is Canadian and is an ASL instructor. It is fairly common for popular store's or brands to be initialized, so it may be signed as "T-H Coffee"
if I'm talking/mouthing while I sign should my mouth move in english order or sign order?
Depends on which mode of sign language you are using and who you are communicating with. Some Deaf prefer that you don't mouth at all and sign ASL focusing on concepts, facial expressions, and mouthmorphemes. Others on the other hand may prefer you mouth words as you sign them in an English order (which is a sign language mode referenced to as PSE, Pidgined Signed English). So, get to know the person you are communicating with and adapt to their preferences if possible 🙂
@@ChrisGorges Thanks, that makes sense. I figure in situations where one is communicating to deaf and hearing people at once, PSE makes the most sense. But ASL grammar order is ideal when communicating primarily to ASL users.

When asking questions does the question word go at the end of the sentence always or is there a rule that applies? When signing “Do you want to go out to lunch” you sign You want lunch but “Where do you want to eat?” you sign You want eat where?. When it’s an open ended question, example 2, the question word (where) is at the end of the sentence as opposed to a yes or no answer is signed directly (example 1)?
I'm not really seeing the use of what (or do-do what) as an identifier in sentences. Is that casually omitted in advanced ASL, or are we not using it yet because it's advanced?
Or do we just not use them at all, anymore?

Chris, I am trying to learn from your videos. I don't know if its just me that sees them, but the bottom of your videos have captions in black boxes that happen to block much of what your hands are doing. I am really struggling with some of the signs because of the captions. How do I get rid of them? Slower movements would have been nice as well, but I would be happy if the captions weren't there or just somewhere else on the screen. I love your videos otherwise and share them with people

I actually did have a quick question! I am just now trying to learn sign language for future purposes to have conversations with people. I am wondering if all article words are not used. Like, do we ever include article words when we do sign language or are they always left out?
They're only used in Signed Exact English, which is ASL vocabulary with English grammar. Otherwise no, they're never used.
Sentence/question sentence I made. English: Hello my name is _ _ _ _ _ _ _. How about yours? In Signs grammar: Hello My name _ _ _ _ _ _ _ .How About yours? (in the blanks you finger spell your name.)
How important is being exact? Example:
Where. Do you move the whole hand or just the finger? Or could you you do it either way?
Either way would be understood, although usually just the finger is more associated with things like “tisk tisk” or “nu-huh” whereas moving the whole hand would better convey the meaning of “where”

So how would I properly speak when asking questions? I know non deaf people usually speak while signing. Would I say “What do you want to eat or do you want eat what?” I’m talking about what would come out of my mouth not the actually signing. Does that make sense?
