I finally got up the nerve to ask one of my deaf coworkers out on a date and she said yes, so now I’m studying sign language like crazy so we can communicate smoothly 😂 These videos are amazingly helpful!
I got in trouble as a kid and had to face a wall that had the ASL alphabet. So, I learned it. I never thought I’d use it. Then several years ago I went into septic shock and had a tube down my throat. My family and doctors were trying to get me to consent to surgery...I was so out of it I didn’t really understand what was going on and because of the tube, I couldn’t talk. But I began to spell out words using the alphabet chart I remembered. It took my sister a minute to realize what was going on; they thought I was crazy. But somehow she realized what I was doing and looked up the letters I was signing on her phone and I was able to communicate. Ever since then I’ve wanted to learn sign language. These are THE most helpful videos I’ve found! Thank you!
When my children were young we would spend time learning a new language together for a few months every year. I was not delusionally thinking my children and I would become fluent in multiple languages. It was one way I promoted curiosity in my kids while exposing them to various cultures and things they may decide to learn more of in the future. My son is in college as a double language major who plans to go to Europe for at least one semester. He's working at Starbucks while in college. So I used what I learned from part 2 to show him, "I'm thirsty. I want to drink Starbucks." He remembers learning some ASL when he was younger, so he got a kick out of it. So now that I'm picking up ASL for my own edification now, I'm using the curiosity for the language I shared with my kids to practice while I talk to them.
I’m learning sign language because 1. It’s easier than other languages, I can read in different languages but speaking is harder 2. I can’t mess up like I do when I talk 😅 3. I’ve noticed there are a lot of deaf people in my area
Also, dude your tamp stamps are a god send, it makes it so easy to just pause the video, go over the time stamps you have been through and just see if you remember them. It really helps a lot so I can just practice them while watching the video!
My phone might be glitching, but it looks like several time stamps are missing on this video, so here's the missing ones: Week: 3:09 Last week: 3:55 Next week: 4:17 Month: 4:21 Last month: 4:43 Next month: 4:51 Year: 4:58 Last year: 5:12 Next year: 5:22 Hour: 5:36 Minute: 6:11 Second: 6:36 Morning: 719 Afternoon: 7:23 Night: 7:28 All day: 8:05 All night: 8:12 Months of the year: 8:32 Bonus signs: Past/long ago/Once upon a time: 9:35 Future: 9:55
Your videos are amazing! Thank you so much! I don’t know anyone who is deaf but I enjoy learning ASL so very much. I have watched your part 1 and 2 videos already!!
I love these videos. I work at an ARC with disabled and I am using your videos to learn and teach some signs. We have 1 deaf person who until now hasn't had much communication. She just sits and does puzzles. Recently I was signing to her and she smiled so big. It warmed my heart that she felt important enough for someone to talk to her in her language
I work at Starbucks so I managed to put together sentences with what I have learned so far to communicate with a deaf customer if they came into my Starbucks. Things like “Welcome to Starbucks” “What can I get you?” “You’re welcome” and “Do you want milk?”.I can also understand their responses thanks to you (fingerspelling and “coffee”).
Love your channel! I’m just below fluent but I don’t get a lot of experiences, so it’s really nice to have a channel like this to keep me in the game and practiced.
I tried the challenge, and I used some of the signs from your past video about the signs related to food! I dont know if these are correct, but I came up with this: "You want food today?" "You want mcdonalds today?" "I need/want coffee this morning" Thats all i've tried so far, but I find this pretty helpful! thank you!
That's great, those sentences are a good start. One quick tip is to remember that words that have to do with time (today, morning, past, future, etc) typically go at the beginning of a sentence. Hope that helps, keep up the great work 👍
This was a great lesson!! My sentence is "Hi, my name is Ki. I am learning sign language. What's your name? How are you? What is the hour? I like milk and cookies, do you?" Off I would wait for their reply before asking the next question. Ur videos are helping me a whole lot! Tysm
Me and my boyfriend are learning ASL because we encounter many deaf people at work. I’m so happy that I’m learning the basics to finally be able to communicate with them without having to write things down!
I really like learning from you. May I make a suggestion? When doing the 25 signs, can you please stop at the end of every five or so and review those? For some of us more mature learners it might be helpful. Thanks for all you do!
Thank you for these videos. In my State there isn't any training for ASL. My mother- in- law use to interpret but had moved away. I have used some sign with my Autistic child as well as with other server autistic children with great success add I'm learning. Ive started eith the help of my boss getting our group of paras to start being taught by a friend who is certified to teach in schools because of the huge success we're having with teaching these children. I'm going to go for my interpreters license! Thank you for all your videos because right now I have to go online and ot off State to get an Associate's in ASL (I'll work in Bachelor's later). Other wise your videos and others is all the "education" I get and sone other videos! So thank you and thank you to the kids I'm helping!
You would use your non-dominant hand for the "calendar" part. If you are right handed, than your non-dominant hand would be your left. If you are left handed, than it would be the opposite
I had learned some ASL about 30 years ago to communicate with some family members, who have since passed. I still remember some signs and sentence structure, but not enough to communicate well. I had been planning to pick it back up again for many years, but never got around to it...until I spent most of April and part of May in hospital with Covid and pneumonia. I had to be intubated and in a coma for 8 days (I almost died during this time). When I came out of the coma, I discovered that my hands were restrained and I couldn't talk because of the intubation tube...which I wanted out IMMEDIATELY. After flapping my hands repeatedly, the doctor finally figured out what I wanted. I remember thinking this would have been so much easier if I remembered more sign language and if the medical personnel knew ASL, also. So, now that I'm on the mend I've jumped into relearning and my quest to become fluent. I'm hoping, one day, to set up classes for first responders, and medical personnel to learn how to communicate with those who can't speak for whatever reason. I came across your videos, quite by accident, and I'm so glad I did. I've done 3 videos in one day (of course I'll go back and review and practice frequently)...It's all flooding back and I am feeling more comfortable signing than I ever have. Thank you so much, you are an amazing instructor.
That's great, I'm glad that you are still learning. Good sentences, here is another way of saying them. "Hello, how you?" "Your name what?" "Lunch, you want go?"
I wanted to find out about the free Things that are available in April? Thank you I did my first group signing it was great last wednesday. Thanks so much
Hey. So I have a question about “months”. If you wanted to say “two” or “three” months, would you change your dominant hand’s sign into a “two” or “three” like for days? Or would you just sign “two” and then sign “month”? Same thing with years.
For months you typically would slide the number down the other hand (for 1-9) otherwise you would sign the number and then sign months. Years, it is usually the number followed by the sign year.
a quick question, you mention in week, that you go from left to right, but if you're left-handed, d you still go from left to right, or do you mirror it, so right to left?
Chris, I don’t know when this video was made but I am in need of a tutor for the Start ASL Courses. I need to zoom with someone using ASL for 30 minutes to an hour at a time. Do y’all still do that.

How does somebody sign if they have trouble with hand dexterity? Or if they’re an amputee? I’ve recently had surgery on my left wrist and it’s caused me to have trouble moving my fingers in certain positions.. so doing the “Y” sign is almost impossible because my ring finger won’t stay down with the other 2 fingers.. will this cause confusion when signing?

There is A LOT of drama in the ASL community at the moment about hearing speakers not signing 100% correctly or with "enough emotion". Thank you for encouraging us and saying that we do not have to be 100% perfect. It's trial and error...but what matters most is we are learning a better way every day.

Question: does it matter which hands you use to sign certain words? For example, in week does my left hand have to be "the calender"?

Hii! I have a question...so if I for exaple the sign "week" make with another hand, is it wrong? I mean like if I need to do with left hand and I do it with write, is the meaning diffrent or wrong?
It doesn't impact understanding or comprehension when done in isolation, although it could be a little jarring if you switch dominant hands throughout a converstaion
@@ChrisGorges Okay! Thank you for help!

Will you try the learning hack I mentioned?
How does somebody sign if they have trouble with hand dexterity? Or if they’re an amputee? @@ChrisGorges Thanks, I'll check it out. I also really appreciate these videos. I've learned so much from you
@@GlucoseGarbage That's awesome, I'm glad you're finding the videos helpful
I have a question, how would you sign multiple years?
Typically you would sign the number and then sign “year”
how would you sign "next week" if you're left-handed? Would you then point your finger in "week" right to left instead, to make it work?
also if you have to say something like two months, would it be the same trick as week? so you use two fingers for month :)
and what about two or three years? :)
It would just be mirrored, so your right (non-dominant) hand would be the closed-5 handshape and then your left (dominant) hand would have the 1 handshape that moves
Typically, yes, you could incorporate the number into the sign up to 9, higher than that, you would sign the number and then sign 'month'
"Year" can be tricky since it could be context sensitive, (ie. age vs time) but typically you would sign the number and then sign "year"
There is A LOT of drama in the ASL community at the moment about hearing speakers not signing 100% correctly or with "enough emotion". Thank you for encouraging us and saying that we do not have to be 100% perfect. It's trial and error...but what matters most is we are learning a better way every day.

I'm left handed. When signing week, my dominant hand won't be moving left to right. Is this still acceptable or should I switch hands so my finger moves in a left to right motion?
if things that are in past tense go behind you then why when signing grandma or grandfather do they go forward?
