My parents have a friend who know ASL. She’s completely hearing but she has deaf friends. But I was really caught up in the beauty of it and wanted to learn. She’s coming to visit and I’m excited to show her what I’ve learned! My dad also knows some sign language. But very minimal, his friend is fluent he just knows most starter signs and other things like dance/dancing or cat/kitten. Or dance you make a person with one hand and have a flat palm up with the other and you wiggle the person back and forth like they’re on a dance floor for dance. For kitten you make an f or in other words you touch you pointer finger and your thumb together and let your other fingers stand up. And then you touch your cheek with your thumb and finger together and basically draw a whisker like a cat.
My doctor just told me I am going to go deaf in about a year. I'm only 12 so this is very helpful for me. Other videos just end up teaching very few phrases and I don't end up remembering anything. I love your teaching style, and tips. Keep up the great work! :)
Lol, yeah, although there are masks that you can make or buy with a clear piece so you can see the other persons mouth, many interpreters use these types of masks for better communication
Yeah...I'm a Pharmacy Technician, and I get deaf/hoh patients. I'm trying to communicate better with them I was told about him tonight from a wonderful woman in drive thru. She told me about this channel (via sticky note).
this is why I'm doing it too! normally when I have deaf customers we get through just fine with pen and paper, but I also feel morally responsible for taking it upon myself to learn the basics at least! it would be nice to have a friendly, small conversation without a communication barrier, and I know it would make things a lot more easier for deaf/hard of hearing customers :)
@@lizjohnson3702 I agree!!! I felt it was my responsibility to learn at least some basic sign to interact with her! I finally got to try it out last week. All I could remember on the spot was "I am learning sign." but she was so happy and replied back, "Good!" :) I was so tickled. I can't wait to learn more and to pass it on to my daughters
I haven't met any deaf people before in real life. I got to know some online in a VR game called VRChat and there were some people trying to teach me some of the basics so I already have knew some words like good or bad. Besides the whole words are pretty much the same but due to the limited finger-movement the spell different. Its really beautyful to see how a community manages to cummunicate through different languages and disabilitys. I hope that I'll be able to have some actual conversations in asl when I learned some more.
I work customer service and find myself having communication blocks with some of the deaf people in the area. I'm so glad I found this video!! I've always wanted to learn ASL
What inspired you to learn sign language? I am just curious if you had a need (to communicate with a parent or friend), or if there was another reason. I taught myself the ASL alphabet when I was about 9 or 10 from the dictionary, now I'm 54. I can't wait to learn more from your videos! Thank you : )
learning ASL because i go long periods of being nonverbal and it helps having a way to communicate during that time, and these videos make it so much easier! thank you!!!
I have been learning sign language from my deaf bff for the last 4 years. She always gives me funny looks if i sign it wrong or forget some words. Thank you for this video! This will help me immensely!
I love this channel so much! I wanted to learn French, sign language, and Japanese and I didn’t think I could do it but this has been encouraging me. I’m so happy I was able to learn these all in one day and memorize them.
That's great that you are learning multiple languages. You might really like this video I did with Juliana Russell who is a teacher and speaks several languages too ruclips.net/video/R2trqEk1rAM/видео.html
I’ve partially lost my hearing from having neuroblastoma and osteosarcoma due to the chemo. It is very hard for me to hear others and read lips. Thank you for this because I’m sure it will help me communicate more clearly in the future :)
Thank you for this video. I'm in my first ASL class and very excited. My only suggestion is to repeat the gestures (3 times) instead of once as you seem to rush through them. I realize I can rewatch but I find things stick in my brain a bit more when I repeat 3 times. Thanks again!
@@ChrisGorges Thank you for this video. I’m just now trying to learn phrases. I’ve mastered the alphabet, albeit still a bit slow at finger spelling. I realize this video is old, but if I could make a suggestion….go a little slower when you’re signing more than one word. Some of the words are a little difficult to see how they are formed going from one word to the next. Thanks, and look forward to watching and learning more from you.
I have recently met a deaf person, I loved watching this! Today I quizzed my mom I said "Your name what" just as a test and she said "Is it- thank you very much?" I laughed so hard. Keep this up please! This was gret! You deserve another 20k!
I now work with our small town school district. When the school year ended, I still needed and wanted to work. The only open positions were as an Instructional assistant in Special Education classes. I was assigned a class of mostly 6-9 year olds. I fell IN LOVE with those kids! Most are on the Autism spectrum and are non verbal. We have been learning how to communicate through signs, eye contact and facial expressions. This now gets to be my regular position! I am SOOOO EXCITED! I can't wait for school to start up again next month and I am using these few weeks off (summer break) to study up. Thank you for providing a way for me to learn how to communicate with those very special children I will now be spending my days with. Actually, "thank you" isn't adequate. You are a blessing.
This is fantastic! I've been wanting to learn ASL for years but the format was always too clinical, or it just didn't connect with me. I love the notes you add with learning and the variations. It's like learning from one of those "cool teachers" in school! Can't wait to come out of the C19 lock down with lots of ASL knowledge :)
Really glad I came across this video and your channel! I’ve wanted to get into ASL, but I just didn’t know where to start or I would forget. But now, I’ve watched this twice, and I feel so proud that I know these signs. I’m definitely gonna watch your other videos and sub for more of this. I appreciate it
learning to communicate with a couple i see often at the grocery store I work at! I wish this was taught along with regular curriculum. Deaf and those hard of hearing should be able to communicate with everyone! Thank you for posting this so I can learn!!!!
Thank you! I work retail and have run into a couple different customers who are deaf who no longer get the option to read lips. I know very small amounts of sign, but have realized i now desperately want to learn more.
Yeah, that's true, I didn't want to overcomplicate things or overwhelm the viewer, but yeah, maybe I shouldn't have over generalized. Thanks for pointing that out
Also, feel free to let me know if you would like me to explain more about grammar, sentence structure, syntax, semantics in future videos ... or if you would prefer less of that stuff and more vocabulary
@@fjncruz671 Glad that it helped, I know the syntax can sometimes be the hardest part, but fortunately ASL is one of the more forgiving languages if you dont get it quite right the first time
I think this guy is a legend! He's still hearting comments and even commenting on those comments even if this video is 1 year old! This video was really helpful thanks
You can also write it down here is how I did it *How are you?*: two fists like a brain then twist next point towards that person *fine*: 5 then put thumb on chest the slightly wave *good*: fingers on chin while other hand is flat in front of you. Bring other hand down to flat one *my name is*: hand flat on chest then two fingers (index and middle) on both hands cross over each other twice Where are you from? You-from-where. You, from: cross pull finger back. Where: pointer finger wave like telling a child no I am learning sign language: sign-language-I-learn. Language: cross pointer fingers, bull both fingers opposite directions. Slow: (I’m right handed so this is how I wrote it) Left hand out, right hand start at fingers and go up arm a little Stop: left palm face up right hand comes down sideways
his name is steve hi steve edit: also since everyone is telling they're story of why their learning sign i will too i'm learning sign because you never know when you're gonna need it and since it's quarantine and i have so much time on my hands let me not waste it
You're welcome. I'm just starting this sign language journey but I recently saw a video that said the version of welcome you're signing is in more accurate to welcoming someone into your home not to saying you are welcome. Again, I don't know sign language I'm just watching a lot of videos trying to figure it out.
Yes, that is true, for instance many will simply sign back thanks in return but depending on your local community the version in the video may also be used, we encourage students to learn as many variations as you are comfortable with and you’ll be better able to understand a wider range of people
learning sign language is nice, knowing you will make a difference in society and help people HOH or deaf, and especially not knowing if you will ever lose hearing, its nice to know sign language, im saving this to my ASL playlist to watch it again, but now, im going to go to my books, and work on them!, i bough tthem and kidna forgot about them because, we have electronics now, but i should work on it, it will def help.
Hello finding video helpful but it's hard to see your hand signs w/the subtitles 🤷♀️ so am not sure if am doing it correctly because I cant fully see the hand movement 🤦♀️
I work at a bakery and we have a couple regulars that are deaf. Including an old co-worker. The smile on there face when I sign the littlest words make me wanna become fluent!
I have struggled to learn ASL for years, every since I learned the alphabet. I learned good morning and good night after that. Bought a few books that were. So complicated. Watched several vids on RUclips n they always go too fast. This is the 1st one I was able to understand except for 1 or 2 you did low n the closed caption letters were blocking the sign but I learned most of these. Thank you for going slow n keeping it simple. I will continue to follow along. Merry Christmas n a Joyful n healthy 2022.
Thank you, I will try to address the closed captions in future videos. However, a quick fix is to watch the video on desktop where you can adjust the size of the closed captions. Thanks for watching and for the feedback
My apologies, the captions can be tricky since they change sizes depending on each device. If you watch from desktop however, you can adjust the size of the captions. In future videos I will try adjusting the composition to compensate for the closed captions. Thanks for the feedback
I have been losing my hearing over several decades. Time to get the whole family and friends on board with ASL. I just started a facebook group for us, in which I can share all these helpful videos I come across. Thankyou.
I'm ready should a person who is deaf move near me, or if I get a job with someone hearing impaired. Short of that, my lack of regular practice will keep me returning to the same videos to refresh my memory every few months. It's a good thing it's fun to learn.
I’m glad that you’re having a positive experience so far and we coming into it with a good attitude, if you would like some more practice, we make free practice sessions available on Zoom every week aslbasics.com/asl-group-practice-sessions/
Thanks, I'll be sure to take that into consideration for future videos. The captions can be tricky since they show up in various sizes depending on the device being used. I appreciate the feedback 👍
I am mostly learning sign language to communicate with my hearing friends who always talk far away from each other and in loud places. Such a useful language.

I think this video deserves a lot more credit, he clearly spent a lot of effort into making this. This is the first video I have seen that has shortcuts to each word in the description.
I would like to Thank you, our grandson was born legally deaf, 16 years later his hearing aids aren't working for him any longer, this hurdle was crossed 16 years ago, with your help, we all are learning, including him.
Hi Chris, I like how you don't overload us. The only thing I have to add is the speed, repeating it slowly would be most helpful. Now I stop the video continuously and try to break up small movements. Thank you for your help, time and efforts. :)
I have a friend who was deaf, before we used to talk using her phone. It's been years since I last saw her and I am planning on finding her again, I'll religiously learn sign language just for her. I don't know how she'll react when I do the sign language to her all of a sudden, and we were still like kids when we met but she was older. I miss her dearly and I hope she is doing okay, thank you for this! Also the name is STEVE I am glad my P.E teacher taught us the letters from A to Z in sign language.

Sorry about your hearing loss at such a young age, I'm glad that you found the video helpful
Hello 👋 sorry to bother you, how are you dealing with it today ?
Chris George: “Make sure you’re smiling when you say good!”
2020: ...masks..
Lol, yeah, although there are masks that you can make or buy with a clear piece so you can see the other persons mouth, many interpreters use these types of masks for better communication
Lol! At work, we are starting to learn to read others' eyes and wrinkles. 🤣
@@chrisbgood2359 lol
Yeah...I'm a Pharmacy Technician, and I get deaf/hoh patients. I'm trying to communicate better with them
I was told about him tonight from a wonderful woman in drive thru. She told me about this channel (via sticky note).
I'm trying to learn ASL to communicate with deaf customers at my job. This will be very helpful!
That's great 🙌
this is why I'm doing it too! normally when I have deaf customers we get through just fine with pen and paper, but I also feel morally responsible for taking it upon myself to learn the basics at least! it would be nice to have a friendly, small conversation without a communication barrier, and I know it would make things a lot more easier for deaf/hard of hearing customers :)
You signed STEVE!!!! It took me a minute to figure it out but literally jumped for joy when I finally did
That's awesome!
I work customer service and find myself having communication blocks with some of the deaf people in the area. I'm so glad I found this video!! I've always wanted to learn ASL
That is awesome!
Ok I have played this video at least 33 times and I'm learning so much from it, thank you so much for making this video.
That's great!
So sorry for everything you've been through, it certainly seems like a lot,. I'm glad that you found the video helpful
Thank you for this video. I'm in my first ASL class and very excited. My only suggestion is to repeat the gestures (3 times) instead of once as you seem to rush through them. I realize I can rewatch but I find things stick in my brain a bit more when I repeat 3 times. Thanks again!
Thanks for the suggestion 👍
It took me 10 mins to learn my name in ASL and it’s so worth it
Awesome, great work!
@@ChrisGorges thank you!
Really enjoyed this video, practicing until the next one!! Thanks!
That's great! You can never get enough practice 😀
I feel like we should have this as a language class because more people should be able to Community and be a part of a conversation
Agreed 👍
It's 4:00 in the morning and your videos are burned in to my brain
Thanks man
Welcome 👋
It is on my bucket list to be a better person by learning ASL. Thank you for doing these. The answer to your first question is "Steve".
That’s great
This is fantastic! I've been wanting to learn ASL for years but the format was always too clinical, or it just didn't connect with me. I love the notes you add with learning and the variations. It's like learning from one of those "cool teachers" in school! Can't wait to come out of the C19 lock down with lots of ASL knowledge :)
Lol, thanks 😁
A good way to remember "sorry" is to take the 'a' from "apologize" and rub it into your heart. So if you're sorry, you mean it from your heart.
That's a great way to remember it, thanks for sharing
@@ChrisGorges And this is a great video :) I appreciate you making these
Really glad I came across this video and your channel!
That's great 🙌
Cool vid.
Just one thing I must say: "are'" and "is" are not articles. They are a form of the verb "to be."
Yeah, that's true, I didn't want to overcomplicate things or overwhelm the viewer, but yeah, maybe I shouldn't have over generalized. Thanks for pointing that out
These are exactly like the ones lifeprint.com has had for years, right down the the number 100.
Lifeprint is a great resource for sure
Also, feel free to let me know if you would like me to explain more about grammar, sentence structure, syntax, semantics in future videos ... or if you would prefer less of that stuff and more vocabulary
Would LOVE a video just on grammar. I'm struggling with it.
@@NCGrace413 Ok, great, thanks for letting me know!
Thanks for explaining the syntax. I appreciate the breakdown of it all!
@@fjncruz671 Glad that it helped, I know the syntax can sometimes be the hardest part, but fortunately ASL is one of the more forgiving languages if you dont get it quite right the first time
Grammar, sentence structure and syntax please! Your videos are awesome!
I think this guy is a legend! He's still hearting comments and even commenting on those comments even if this video is 1 year old! This video was really helpful thanks
Thank you for the video. I've been HOH for 20 years and have finally decided to accept myself and learn ASL. This is getting me off to a quick start!
You can also write it down here is how I did it
*How are you?*: two fists like a brain then twist next point towards that person
*fine*: 5 then put thumb on chest the slightly wave
*good*: fingers on chin while other hand is flat in front of you. Bring other hand down to flat one
*my name is*: hand flat on chest then two fingers (index and middle) on both hands cross over each other twice
Where are you from? You-from-where. You, from: cross pull finger back. Where: pointer finger wave like telling a child no
I am learning sign language: sign-language-I-learn. Language: cross pointer fingers, bull both fingers opposite directions.
Slow: (I’m right handed so this is how I wrote it)
Left hand out, right hand start at fingers and go up arm a little
Stop: left palm face up right hand comes down sideways
Excellent 👍
his name is steve hi steve edit: also since everyone is telling they're story of why their learning sign i will too i'm learning sign because you never know when you're gonna need it and since it's quarantine and i have so much time on my hands let me not waste it

Was it Steve?
I started watching some videos out of curiosity
Yep, it sure was, great work
You're welcome.
That's great
Hello finding video helpful but it's hard to see your hand signs w/the subtitles 🤷♀️ so am not sure if am doing it correctly because I cant fully see the hand movement 🤦♀️
Thanks for letting me know that. I'll be sure to make sure the signs are shown high in the frame away from the subtitles :)
you can take the subtitles off by clicking the cc
this should definitely be a subject in school 😅
Agreed 👍
When will the next 3 videos be available?
The next one will be available tomorrow. The third will go up a week after that, and then the final one a week after that.
@@ChrisGorges Thanks so much! Can't wait!

Merry Christmas n a Joyful n healthy 2022.
you're an excellent teacher, but I can't see all of your hand movements because of the words on the screen. Sincerely hope you can address this.
Thank you, I will try to address the closed captions in future videos. However, a quick fix is to watch the video on desktop where you can adjust the size of the closed captions. Thanks for watching and for the feedback
Oh to turn of captions pause it u will see three dots at the right click it and there's captions and then click it and turn it off and ur done
@@lordforquaad2459 theyre probably deaf this is an asl video :)
@@brisouthwell2822 oh that makes sense thx so much :)
The name was Steve!! Did I get it?
Yep, you nailed it!
Captions in the way of your hands...would like to clearly see your hands..
My apologies, the captions can be tricky since they change sizes depending on each device. If you watch from desktop however, you can adjust the size of the captions. In future videos I will try adjusting the composition to compensate for the closed captions. Thanks for the feedback
You can also turn off captions to see it clearer
You are a king for making these. I have always wanted to learn ASL but I never had the chance until now.
Thanks, I'm glad you found the video helpful
thank you so much my friend !!! You have the gift to teach with patience ,care and good attitude always !! You have angel !!! God bless you !!!
Thanks
The name was 'Steve' i think correct me if i'm wrong
Steve is right 👍
There are two reasons why I am here
1- I am bored af and why not learn something
2-my stepmom’s sister is deaf
👍
did i just learn 25 words in sign language, yes i did
lol, great work!
I appreciate the work but words running down disrupt the viewing of signs
Thanks, I'll be sure to take that into consideration for future videos. The captions can be tricky since they show up in various sizes depending on the device being used. I appreciate the feedback 👍
Steve?
Yep!

I’ve been watching loads of asl videos and I’ve learned more asl in 3 days than I have learned Spanish in 3 years...
I was the same way, ASL was much easier to learn than verbal languages
Just picked up ASL this week and your videos are SOOO helpful!!! Thank you!!!

I think this video deserves a lot more credit, he clearly spent a lot of effort into making this. This is the first video I have seen that has shortcuts to each word in the description.
Thanks
Took a course in college and really enjoyed it, I need to learn more to be able to help some of my clients.
That's great!
Thanks for the tips!

I know this is an older video but it's been super helpful already. I just started learning ASL on my own and I have my notebook in hand ready to take notes and I love being able to pause and practice and continue or go back. I am probably going to be stuck on this video for a while until I feel confident with this and then move to the next video! Thank you for this!
