  • In this video I talk about why you should stop worrying about the past and stop worrying about the future. The best way is to live in the present. Do you worry about the past or the present? Do you feel like you live in the present?

I love finding out people I admire are high school dropouts just like me. I think I was just a late bloomer. Now I'm struggling through analysis. Not sure when it's going to get easier, but eventually it synthesizes. In my cooking career it took me 10 years to feel like I knew what I was doing, and I did it every single day. I got really good at what I did and was eventually able to mentor people with less experience. Whenever I feel like giving up on math I remember how long it took to get really good at cooking and I realize that this just takes time. I had to take 25 years away from school to begin to understand how to use my brain in that capacity.

I can relate to this one - my interest in maths sparked "late" when compared to my classmates (at 21, after starting my UG) and even though I'm doing good, sometimes I wish I had been interested e.g. in math olympiads and similar stuff in high school. I feel like I've wasted time and I get impostor syndrome even though I'm not even in grad school yet (might start next year!). I worry too much about the future, too. But I try to think cold headedly about it and remind myself that my life path is unique, and so is everyone else's.

I love this video. This took me like at least 19 years to realize this fact. Now, I'm planning on taking a one or two math courses just to learn more math. But deep in me, I feel like I want to be a professor but grad school never was on my mind because if money and time. But I'm not going to focus on a future I can't see yet. I'll focus on my now. Thanks for reminding me this powerful lesson.

I love these types of videos! Just a nice reminder to focus on the now. As someone who plans to attend grad school in math, I'm constantly finding myself worrying about the future and sometimes I forget that I still have three years of undergrad to focus on first. You really can't change the past or the future, but the one thing that you can change is how you choose to live right now!

My analysis professor told everyone over the zoom lecture today that only two people deserve to pass his class and that the rest of us will be getting an F and to reconsider dropping out.. sometimes when I think about my future doing maths, I think of that 😪
I just want to know how to problem solve and do math.. I want to think like a mathematician, but then I think of my analysis professor and I remember that I have no future in math.

And you know I have had teachers say stuff like that to the class , well maybe not so bad, but stuff like "you all will never succeed if you keep this up" etc, really negative. I think the thing to remember is that teachers are people too and it's just their opinion. You can do it man you just have to work hard and believe and don't let other people bring you down!

I had this professor who taught abstract algebra I with rings and polynomial rings, so we were all learning those without knowing anything about groups. I was really confused and felt didn't get much of it. Then when I take Abstract II with another professor this semester, he was shocked that we didn't know anything about groups, so we had to go back to groups. So we ended up covering 20 chapters of Gillian's book in one semester. Just last week, we covered chapter 20 the splitting field in one lesson. At one point, I was thinking to myself that I will never get Abstract algebra, but luckily I watched your video that you just have to believe you can do this. Now after watching a bunch of RUclips videos about splitting field, I feel like I am starting to get it.

In my first few years of high school, I sucked at math. Like, really bad. Basically, I was one of those people who talked about how "I was good at math until the alphabet got involved hahaha". It also didn't help that my mom excused my poor grades in math as "not being a math person" since she is terrible at math herself. But I was very interested in a scientific career at the time and I realized if I was ever going to have the career I wanted I had to learn this math. So my junior year of high school I committed to trying to get A's and learn all the algebra I missed to try to get good at it. Eventually, when I got close to applying to colleges I felt ashamed and inferior since I knew kids who were in all honors classes and who were taking AP Calc and such. I really was scared that I didn't have what it took to be one of those math wizzes.
Well, I took precalc my first semester in college and got an A. Took calc 1, loved it and had a super great teacher and got an A. Worked my ass off in calc 2 and got an A, and was one of the top students. Now I'm finishing up calc 3 and I still have an A and as far as I know I'm the only one in that class with one. I even ended up loving math and statistics so much that I switched from chemistry to statistics, and I'm still open to the idea of maybe switching to applied math. The point is no matter who you are or how old you are, you can learn math. It's a skill, like playing guitar or learning Spanish, and the more you do it and struggle the better you get until the point that you're able to calculate trig functions and manipulate integrals with ease. It's all about little steps every single day, and having a motivation to learn.

Well, I guess I can get behind not letting my past drag me down. Sure, I've quit the drugs, booze and cigs, but at the same time, all that's happened back then is gonna stick with me. So I hope you didn't mean "Stop worrying about your past = Forget about your past". As for the future, I think it is important to have some sort of gameplan. I'm aware that overanalysing/thinking ahead too far might require Omega (2^n) time as the number of variables n increases and so it would be paralysing. At the same time, the future is somewhat important, because, for example, I don't want to be evicted, which means I have to make my mortgage payments on time, which means I need an income, which I have right now, but .. You get the idea.
I'd say many things are obvious in hindsight.

Ya I still think about the future also. I think it's ok to think about the future and plan but worrying is no good. Whenever you are worried just try to be self aware and tell yourself there is no point doing it. People tend to get into loops where they overthink stuff so sometimes doing something else to get your mind off what you are worried about helps.
