  • I once read that "Hard Work Beats Talent Until Talent Works Hard". This is an interesting quote and in this video I talk about it and discuss how it relates to mathematics. There are plenty of examples of talent that works hard, for example Terence Tao. In the end, does it matter? What do you all think?

Terence Tao did say on his blog that he did poorly on his PhD quals due to a mix of overconfidence (he was constantly praised from a young age) and not studying enough. Shows that we do our best when we learn the virtue of resilience and dedication, regardless of our talent.

That quote is very near and dear to my heart. I remember when I was in middle/highschool band I was the worst player in every band, symphonic, wind, jazz etc. My best friend just seemed to grasp the music so much better than me. I was so jealous. Then one day a solo got offered for our section (alto sax) and the whole section wanted it. I wanted to prove that I wasnt terrible. I spent every day for a month practicing that solo( and other stuff) for 5 or more hours a day. I wanted it soooo bad. My hardwork did pay off and i got the solo AND i got moved to first chair AND i was good enough to get offered solos for the Jazz band. that experience made me realize i dont need natural gifts to do well in life. Hardwork WORKS! In my undergraduate studies in mathematics I am surrounded with people that are far more gifted but I refuse to lag behind them.

I quite like the basketball analogy, but I can't remember where I heard it. "You don't need to be the tallest player on the court, you only need to be tall enough to play". So you don't need to be the most intelligent person to contribute in a STEM field, you just need to be intelligent enough.

I teach pre-calc as a TA and on the last test, my class had the lowest average of the five sections. My class kicked into gear and worked incredibly hard, packing my office to its capacity during some of my office hours, and on the second test, the class average increased 8.5 points. They aren’t the most talented bunch of math students, but they worked hard and I am incredibly proud of them.

Another one is, "Over confedance will kill you". I saw an interview once with a Caltech professor. One of the problems that Caltech faces, is that their student body is really, really smart. They are used to being the very best at their high schools, always being the top students. Always getting that perfect score. Well, everybody is like that in the Freshman class. So, when they're handed their first C or D, or maybe even an F, it comes as an extreme shock. Some don't or can't recover. They have never received a low grade in their life. For the first time in their lives they have to really work at something.
I believe strongly that a student has to be "matched" with the college or university they attend.
I was matched to Cal State and I got in and on just fine. Had I gone to Caltech or MIT, I probably would have got my head handed to me on a platter.
That is is not to say now that I've already been through the system I can't appriciate and understand their books, papers and lectures, etc. I do. But back when I was 18.....

I completely agree with this quote, for almost all my life the quote "Hard work beats talent" made absolutely no sense to me, of course it din't, anyone could work hard, not everybody could have talent. This is also coming from personal experience, because both my mom and dad, especially dad are really smart. Dad im talking 2nd place in a national exam he studied 1 day for, and mom scholarship for one of the top 20 universities. My whole extended family is pretty smart too, so me and my brother thankfully inherited that. I know my intelligence is much higher than average because when i was at school i used to sleep through classes or doodle throughout the whole lesson, yet guess what? I still got far better than my peers who actually studied, to be fair my peers were definitely not the brightest and my class wasn't the best. But i was one of the only ones who managed to get back into my school with affiliation besides my classmates, even though alot were much more hardworking than me. Mind you, i dint study either until the last 2 weeks before the national exams. Now in secondary, because my school is an elite school, the people there all have very good grades, so i was expecting to be left in the dust especially with my lazy attitude, but i was surprised to find out that wasn't the case. Now im in a good class because everyone in this school has pretty good grades especially the ones who arn't affiliated, so the first term of the year i got straight A's as i started to pay attention in class and guess what, i only studied 2 days before every exam, 3 days max. And my peers who studied wayy harder than me dint manage to get those grades. Even now, where i have reverted back to my old habits of not paying attention in class, i still manage to pass and get OK grades compared to my friends who try so hard yet fail. Im not saying this to brag, i dont need someone to validate this, because i have seen it with my own eyes, and others too. My point is, hard work doesn't beat talent, unless talent is lazy, even then if your talent surpasses most so much, it still beats hard work. Not discrediting hard work, it definitely has an effect but take this example: A woman, is biologically weaker than men, this is coming from a woman herself, no matter how much a woman trains, if a man trains the same, the man will inveitably win. This is talent (not really in this case, its more of an anology) vs Hardwork. Of course, if you lack talent, all you can do is work hard and do your best, thats the most that anyone can do.

for ur last analogy I feel like that doesn’t convey ur point bc obviously if talent works hard they’ll be better but say that a woman has been training and working out but there’s a guy who doesn’t care abt what food he eats or doesn’t go to the gym then there the woman is winning bc of her hard work

I don't think learning fast is a talent. I'd prefer much more to be that person that maybe takes longer to learn something, but then becomes really creative with it, you know, at least getting fazed by the learning material a little bit, not just throwing it into your universal light speed trash can memory to retrieve it during the test. That's no talent to me... things take time, so maybe you're talented, but just didn't get to the point where it matters yet.
