In this video I discuss my thoughts on Cristiano Ronaldo's quote about Talent vs Hard Work. If you guys' missed it Cristiano Ronaldo mentioned in the Freekickerz video that Talent is more important than Hard Work in terms of becoming a great soccer player.
I see where he is coming from, but I disagree to a certain extent and I explain my thoughts in this video. Let me know what you guys think!

Finn Tablet my cousin is an ex professional national player. But he is now playing in amateur league. It was sad to see him losing his own faith when he got dropped out from a pro club. He received plenty of calls afterwards. But he denied.

Guys listen. When I was a kid I belived that you need a talent to be a pro. That's what made me quit many times in different sports, guys if you wonder if you should start training more serious, do it go chase your dreams, stay disciplined and you will succeed i'm 95% sure if you won't you will regret that in the future like I did. Now I'm 21 and it's too late to be a pro basketball player, yet this year I started playing american football in one of top teams in my country, I still have 4 to 7 years to reach prime so I still have some chances to be a pro at it since european football is pretty unpopular haha. (Disclaimer, it's still on pretty good level don't get me wrong ;D) I need to tell ya, in first 2 months I improved my 40y dash from 5,22 to 4,95 and It was one of the best improvement if not the best in the team (I'm still like one of the worsts at my position [14th of 20 haha] but it will change soon hopefully :D).
What many people don't know is that you need to get OBSESSED! talent is nothing, hard work is good but there are thousands others who also work hard, the most important things are: to be disciplined not motivated(that's basically what will make you work hard), train smarter so you can improve quicker faster than others who work as much as you do, just do it smarter so you can train more efficient, learn more and more about your sport (etc. if you shoot basketball well and think you know everything, reconsider that every 3 months, you will find space for improvement [mechanics, off ball, quicker release, better pump fakes etc.]),learn about your body so you can stay healthy and train more, another very important thing - rest and regenerate(including diet) like your life depends on it that might be the most important thing when you train a lot, there is always something you can do better or more efficient than others, for example the fastest guy in my team is doing just a regular training at his free time, there is plenty of space for me to train better than him at the same amount of time becouse I learn about training and he is not, so if I stay hungry and healthy I will eventually beat him, and it's the same with you guys.
Dedicate yourself to the sport, stay hungry, stay healthy, be obsessed, and you will make it. Good luck :)

Totally agree with you Matt! I am from Australia and I gave up football at the age of 12 and didn't kick a ball again until I was 17 and it wasn't until then I realised how much I missed the beautiful game. I started training every morning waking up at 5am working on individual drills, I worked on strength during the middle of the day and team training or individual game analysis on my own in the evening.
I noticed progressive improvement in my ability and in the space of 2 and a half years I got all conference player in college and invites to semi pro and professional trials.
Talent is beneficial but nothing can beat hard work, persistence and dedication.
Talent can beat all that.I know a guy who went from never having kicked a ball before, to being a professional player in 2 years. No special training or anything.Simply a born natural....

Some talent in needed in my opinion, hardwork is more important but without any talent, you can't reach any further than your peak.
Talent determines what your peak is, while hardwork is what gets you to your peak.

Without talent you will achieve things along with frustration ,sacrifice and takes much long time to see minute results,with talent you enjoy the process,didn't regret sacrifice,you know what you doing,you start earlier,you don't get distracted by other people's opinion about particular field and most important you are always driven for that particular skill

My VIEW
Few issues with many of these
1) Physical training is an absolute requirement to training your muscles and reflexes
2) Things like "deliberate practice" are important to making efficient use of your time and only you can know what you need to practice once you get past the obvious problems
3) Those "hours to mastery" studies have the issue that they tend to exclude extreme outliers, but these are the exact people you want to capture
4) Hours to mastery has a dirty secret. The variance between the best and the worse is phenomenally large and gets worse the more mental the task is
4.a) Physical (sports) mastery can vary by 100x. What may take one person 1,000 hours to master may take another 100,000 hours
4.b) Mental (novel problem solving) mastery can vary by 10,000x. What may take one person 100 hours to master may take another person 1,000,000 hours
The bigger problem with the more mental a task is around barrier to entry. A young child who is physically inclined is extremely limited in what kind of physical practice they can do. A two year old can't do much towards body building or competing with other children their own age in a professional degree.
With mental tasks, there is virtually no barrier to entry. A two year old can be curious about why something is and obsess about the problem without access to books or teachers, all during critical years of brain development, that unlike physical exercise, you can never get back. By the time the child is 5, they may have already put into the "10,000" hours to mastery. Not only that, they have brain structures that will allow them to be more efficient than others.
Personality plays a large role and psychologist hate that reason, because personality is not a metric of any form of intelligence, even though it is strongly correlated with certain giftedness or talent. A child with a personality that results in them being greatly curious, obsessively focus, and detail oriented is going to have a life time leg up if those factors led to them exercising their brain during key brain development phases.
In a world where people rarely try, a strong work ethic can get you very far. And more philosophically, the journey is more important than the destination. The real goal should be to better yourself both in ability and "character". Having a goal of being the best is just setting yourself up to fail. There can only be one best and generally someone is always going to better than you at some specific thing even within an area that you may be overall great. The real inspiration is to not let yourself never try because you're afraid of failure.
Talent is all you need in life, you can work hard and have determination but if you don’t have the natural skills/talents/gifts then you will always fail.

I really hate when I play in pickup games or a match in my seasons and a player or parent will say I’m very talented because I’m not. I just put in the hours on the field and at the gym and truly want to go far in my soccer career.

I do agree, yet in terms of waking up early and putting in that amount of time I think it can be differed like you say - listen to your body - and from playing football/soccer I think you need both. The harder you work the more talent you’ll gain.

I think your view is perfectly aligned with where you ended up professionally. I think at the Elite levels Hard work and Extreme Talent go hand-in-hand... With an extreme work ethic you can make it far (about like you did), likely not elite, and with great talent but poor work ethic, you'll only make it so far. With both, you can make it to the top levels.

Talent is your potential and you need hard work to reach your potential. No matter how hard you work, after a certain point everyone reaches a certain limit. That's what talent is. People with talent has a higher peaking point compared to those who don't, but without hard work you'll never reach your full potential. Through extremely hard work, I guess you could push your limits as well but once you hit a certain threshold, it takes a lot more work to gain even a little amount. Where that threshold lies is the amount of talent someone has. To be great, in a level of Ronaldo, Messi, Curry, etc you need both hard work and talent. But to be good at something, hardwork is often enough.

Great video thanks. My issue is mostly with people's definition of talent. Like you're talking about how you had no natural ability to strike a soccer ball. I don't really see that as talent or not being talented. Whatever time it takes you isn't really important in the beginning. The beginning is where most people's previous experience with motor-function and muscle memory activities will differ most so it's the worst time to measure if you've "got it or don't". So when people look at kids saying "he learns faster than the other kids = he has talent" more often than not that kid has had previous experiences with similar activities, or as described in the book "The Genius Code" they simply stumble upon a faster method as their starting method which will often become the pre-dominant for all the peers a couple of years down the road.
Also the difference between someone with a quick start and someone with a slow start will often become insignificant or even dissappear altogether with time.

I think you are confusing talent with mentality as mentality is what makes someone the best whearas as u sed if u put the same hours in on the pitch u may not be as good as ronaldo. If you dont have physical and technical talent you cant go anywhere, and i know this because i have been playing soccer since i was a kid(im italian and here almost everyone plays). Simply, some people are gifted and the rest arent, and you notice it since they are 8-10 years old. Pirlo has a huge talent!!!!very few currently living people could follow his footsteps!

hey Matt, I was wondering if you could give your opinion as to why the US soccer team isn't upto par with the rest of the world. Even though the US does not suffer from shortage of athletic talent. Maybe it's culture, maybe luck and exposure.

I'm not Matt, and you may not even care for my opinion, but if I may, I'd like to say a few things about this topic. I'd also like to hear Matts opinion on the matter, just to see what he thinks.
I think the first reason US soccer isn't up to par is coaching methods, and team play tactics. I think the US team is expected to play a certain way, but it appears that they aren't exactly ready or skilled enough to play in said manner. I think it has to do more with composure and development that ties in with my next paragraph.
Another BIG reason I think US soccer isn't up to par with the rest of the world is the fact that professional play in the US is mostly gated by college attendance (pro teams here in USA don't usually look your way if you didn't play college level) and it cascades down because to play in college, you need to keep a high GPA, that requires you to sacrifice VALUABLE time practicing and developing in your trade: soccer. In most other countries professional soccer players are already groomed to be pro starting at the early teens, till the late teens and that's their trade. Its pretty much child labor, something that wont fly in the USA because of the way things are here. I believe this reason to be the reason USA will never be able to stand out at the top level: you have 25 year olds, with degrees in Architecture, law, Kinesiology and MAYBE 4-5 years of playing at the highest level in USA, playing against top teams with young players with degrees in PROFESSIONAL SOCCER since they were 15 (10 in Messi's case).
+Chano Roriguez hmm interesting. If it were just the tactical focus or misfocus then wouldnt the players still show off their prowess by playing for big clubs across Europe? ( granted their are some playing at the highest level).
The college recruitment system does seem misaligned with the rest of the world, where they start club football much younger or at all, but, the college system has propelled basketball, football, baseball, wrestling and to an extent hockey, to world class heights. Insight from college players and journalists indicate that the education received from the 'college' portion as just a formality. And that the 'college' system merely acts as a money making institute, with athletics being the prime product fueled by commercialization( in the cases of football and basketball) thus making college faint substitute for the club system.

Athletic talent where? Besides Christian Pulisic there’s really no talented players as there is in Europe. And if you noticed he’s not not 100% american either. It’s all in the system. Football came into North America later, and it will take a lot of years to adjust it. But football everywhere else in the world will never be as good as it is in Europe. Let’s face the facts

what do you mean not up to par? USA made it to World Cup round of 16 in 2014, 2010 and made it to Quarters in 2002. USA is 24th in FIFA rankings which is not far from England (15th). But if you're comparing to countries like Spain, Brazil, Germany its due to the amazing youth system that those countries have.
I think it's not a straight answer. I think it is combination of multiple things:
1. Hard work (Definitely needed. Its like no hard work, no success, but only hard work, doesn't mean guaranteed success)
2. Talent (talent is a crucial factor in my opinion, some people have naturally good hand-eye coordination, some people have naturally beautiful voice, some people are more intelligent than others. These things definitely play a role)
3. Luck (If 10 people worked equally hard and were equally talented, only 1 of them might be really successful just because they happened to be in the right place at the right time)
4. Physical and mental health (If someone is genetically having some health problems, they probably can't be as successful as others who are completely healthy. People don't want to admit it, but unfortunately that's the truth.)
5. May be something else too.
I used to play soccer almost daily until age 15. I was a forward and generally the leading scorer on my team. I stopped playing regularly at age 15 because of teen issues that had nothing to do with soccer. I decided to join my school team again two-and-a-half years later but I was made to play defender, a position I wasn't used to. I did okay but I'd lost a lot of my previous confidence. I pretty much stopped playing on a regular basis after that season. I didn't start playing that much again until my late thirties. I joined a couple of recreational leagues. I'm 54 now and I play okay but I lack confidence. Obviously, I can't be a professional anymore but I would love to play with more confidence and regain some of the mindset I had when I was fifteen. This video is very encouraging. I will take your advice.

Some years ago, when being interviewed here in Portugal, he was asked how great of a part luck played in his success and he replied “Luck requires a lot of work”. Very elegant way of putting it and hits the nail in the head, imo.
In my opinion talent is not just having the skills to pick up on things quickly, but also the ability to improve much faster than if an average person put in the same amount of work . This is why you have people who put in so much effort into things, yet aren’t as good as others who simply just learn at a much faster rate. On the flip side you also have talented people who have so much potential , but are simply either too lazy to put in the work , or get upset and quits as soon as something finally gets remotely difficult , causing them to be eventually surpassed by people who aren’t talented and just work hard. At the end of the day Talent + hard work > hard work alone > Talent alone.
Forget about this talent nonsense. Work hard and consistently but MOST importantly work SMART. What I mean is to study the details of the technique you are practicing. Also dont waste time on useless drills. Analyze and be aware of how you're practicing. Dont practice for the sake of practice. Trust me, ive made huge leaps because of these points above.
lol i agree. "You can't do the same thing over again and expect different results". I don't believe doing the wrong drills mindlessly will get a non talented player to pro. If a player is untalented accept the fact and adapt and try your best and you can make something happen. idk

Luca Person very true. For example in football, either you were born with talent to play it or it’s not your sport. It doesn’t matter how much you work, without talent you’re nothing. Useless wasting time training for 8 or 9 hours a day expecting different results when the only thing you’re doing is making your body tired and having a high risk of injury. Yeah I agree with Cristiano Ronaldo. Heres the thing, all the guys at the pro level? yeah they ALL work extremely hard. What separates the best from the rest? yeah its talent, no way around it. BUT, don't get it twisted... its not like those guys like Ronaldo are JUST talented and that's it.... no, they ALSO work hard. So, that's what separates the best from the rest... they are talented AND they work extremely hard. Look at Giovanni Dos Santos.. its undeniable that he is/was talented... but, he JUST doesn't like to work hard... so he ended up just being mediocre at the professional level.
The good news for all of you though, is talent is not some gift you're born with, or a gift that some angel just blessed you with one day... no. Talent is born from hard work and a superior connection to what you're trying to focus on. Say for example, dribbling. If you spend enough time dribbling a ball, you do this day in day out, while you sleep, while you dream, while you day dream, eventually you get a superior almost magical connection and understanding to the ball. Other players can work as hard as they want, sprint as much as they can, lift weights, jog 400 miles a day... but they will NEVER develop this connection YOU have with the ball because its been your focus which in the end, turns out to be a "talent". They may be faster than you, stronger than you, but you have this "gift" that YOU have developed with all that focus that you spent on dribbling. Ofcourse, also work hard at maintaining your conditioning, but don't be one of those people that think with JUST hard work you'll stand out because guess what? all your professional team mates aren't there because they DIDN'T work hard.
TLDR: Its true, if you don't have talent, you're just the same as anyone else at the pro level. They aren't there because they don't work extremely hard. Talent is what separates you from the rest. Good news is talent is something anyone can attain with enough time, dedication, and focus.

I don't know to be honest, I'm not much of a fan of Neymar. From the little I have seen of him (atleast from Barcelona) I'd say he relies more on his talent than straight hard work. He might have learned the hard way that you STILL need to work hard. Being talented ONLY takes you so far, just like ONLY working really hard can only take you so far.

I believe that you can achieve anything if you are determined and have a passion for what you are doing. Hard work is a key part of that, and is one of the deciding factors to becoming a pro player. But Ronaldo clearly knows what he's talking about. There is no argument between talent and hard work, they are intertwined. There is no hard work if you don't already have talent, but there is no talent outside of hard work.

I believe everybody has some potential, it does not mean that is going to be the same type of talent, as you said, maybe you are genetically predisposed to be athletic, and I think that's kind of like a talent for you, and that talent makes you a better player throuh experiences, that you get training and playing soccer. Maybe a player that is not that talented, with that hard work can make it to the elite, but I don't think that he can be top 5 without the talent with the ball that some people are born with.

I'm a good football player playing at a decent youth level in England and I haven't worked hard growing up to get here ( I am now don't worry ) but I just played a lot of football because i found it fun, making me have talent, so it just takes a lot of practice, perhaps not only hard work

Maybe we're all talking about the same thing? Maybe hard work IS a talent. We hear this sort of thing all the time, but working hard and being dedicated is hard work. And it takes TALENT to know you aren't good enough and need to train. What happens to the truely gifted athlete is that they believe in their talent... they think they don't need to train... you need doubt, you need fear, you need the desire to get better... If you think your talent is good enough, or you know everything, you are done. Matt is GREAT because he knows what is bad at. He knew his crossing was poor, so he worked at it. He knew his body was tight and may have caused an injury so he began stretching more.

I'd say talent at the start and very top, hard work everywhere else. Scouts look at talent. Coaches look at hard work to let you play. But for game changers at the top (world beaters), you must have talent (that can be seen in a game because of the hard work you put in training).

How to dribble with your head up
Just like anything it takes time. You have to get more familiar with dribbling and feel comfortable on the ball. Pace yourself dribbling and not try to dribble so fast with your head up, that's how you lose the ball. You don't have to keep your head up 100% of the time. But pick your head up after beating a player and before making a pass and receiving the ball. Always keep your head on a swivel, that's constantly looking out for defenders and know what your going to do before you get the ball. Hope this helps!

I think there are more factors than hard work or talent. For example, the very first priority is to believe you can improve, you can be a great player. Because believing it makes you do the stuff you should do to be a better player. And then with this improvement as an athlete, then you see greater results, which make you trust more in you. So definitely trusting in your potential makes a huge difference. It is a virtuous circle (whereas if you don't trust in the possibility of success, then you won't have results and will get in a vicious circle)
And, what a curious thing: many times you see a teen who is a great athlete, and then you assume it is a matter of talent...but maybe he just trusts in his possibilities to improve and then has improved... Or maybe you can be the person who tells that guy: you are talented... Then your words can initialize a virtuous circle in that teen or kid!!! (and you can do the same for yourself)

Talent is natural aptitude to accomplish something with ease. For example, any can learn to be a decent boxer but majority of people will never become a Mayweather or Ali, even with a head start. There are plenty of people who start just as early if not earlier and put in more work than said talented people and do not even make it to the big leagues to compete with the best.

You know Matt, in most soccer oriented countries when you're a kid and you have good youth coaches around (so definitely not in NA), they don't bench you for attempting things like dribbles or long shots when an easy pass was available. They only start doing that when you reach a certain age, mostly around 14 yrs old.
The reason for this is because when you're growing up, you can start being aware of your own limitations like how fast can you move and things like that. That awareness of capability/limitations is how you discover your "talent" within the sport and adapt accordingly which immediately sets you up above average before even applying hard work.
That's why many of the greatest players say they played on the streets when growing up, because when you're playing on the streets you don't care and you dare to try. No coach to bench you for not passing or some random bs.
Having said that, without hard work you don't get anywhere and it's definitely more important. This is just an insight from someone that didn't grow up in NA, played high level soccer in the University and got offered a spot in the U21 National Team (declined because school was a priority for me and it meant I had to drop out).
We praise people with talent because they really know how to "play" the game, they do things fluidity and naturality but we admire hard-working people because of their dedication and perfection-mindset that help to improve the limit of the game. Being gift isn't ensured that you are going to excel but it is 100% true that hard-work get "shit" done.

Well Matt I don't necessarily believe the talent over hard work stuff, when I was 16 I really wanted to play football at the top level I tried out at school everyone laughed at me , I had on a Messi shirt and they called my lavezzi mocking me that I'm not nowhere as good, and after I trained hard with my friends for a year I got a complete turn around, im at a point now where my goals now is to be apart of my national team and to also be a pro , and I've seen your games I think u can be the best ever on this planet , you just have to believe it yourself, you always say to us as your fans to believe I'd like to see you take on anyone and play a good ball in like your a world-class wingback, cause you can do it, you have to believe 💯
