How are you brother? Six months ago I didn't even know how to add or subtract, I started watching your videos and you inspired me to learn math. Now I am in college studying computer science and I have regained one of my childhood dreams: to be a scientist working for the good of society. I am studying mathematics at the university and I set my mind to pass without the need of private teachers, just following two tips from you: just put your butt in the chair and study in group every time you can, everything is going well, on Friday I have an exam and I feel I will get a 10 (a+).
I am also doing meditation, yoga and running every day for half an hour, your tips are applicable in all areas of life. Want to be better? Just work hard in every aspect of your life.

Talent/aptitude is so overrated, INTEREST is really what sets people apart. The interested person will keep going, because they love it
I'm old and have found that persistance is key. I'm not a natural at math but I can do it well now. Same with drawing a straight line. I practiced drawing lines as I wanted to be able to draw. I finally got the time to do my PhD at 60 and I'm having a blast.
persistence is really the key. Here in India, I have been writing a national level exam for last 2 years but I was unsuccessful again and again I think a day will come when I would get through this exam.

When it comes to genetics for talent, it's important to know that our gene expressions can be turned on or off and up and down depending on all kinds things from time itself to environment, to nutrition, lifestyle and experiences. So you can be bad at something at one point in life but good at it later.
Also, people make a big mistake in thinking that early and easy success is the only way to know if you're talented. Struggle, failure, persistence and time are always the keys to greatness.
I’ve always been horrible at math…but ironically enough, I’m okay at music, lol 😂
My K-12 years were far too weird to describe sufficiently here, but I’m 100% sure that that is the reason why my brain was never really capable of absorbing basic mathematical concepts.
Luckily, back in 2016, I took a basic math course via an instructor at Mathnasium. That gave me the skills and confidence I needed in order to successfully complete the GED in early 2017.
So, long story short: I completely agree with the sentiment of your video, Math Sorcerer.
I’m never going to be as good as you, at ANY mathematical courses, more than likely; but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try….
Learning stuff shouldn’t be a competition. It’s all about personal enrichment.
I have never been much of a math guy my whole life, now about to join an engineering major with 2 weeks left I'm doing algebra and arithmetic, and I am loving it. Wished if I gave it a bit of attention back in high school days wouldn't bee struggling now, but it's all for the better. Your videos really helped in convincing me that I can start whenever and get good at math

This was my second time attempting a math major. My first time was fresh out of high school, and I had never had to study before. I didn't have any kind of time management skills. I would just let hours go by, and instead of studying, I would just kinda hang out and have fun with my friends. I dont regret hanging out and making college memories, but I wish I had the time management skills to be able to do it then. I ended up swapping majors then because all of a sudden, I was failing Calc 2, Linear Algebra, and Discreet Mathematics all at the same time, and I just couldn't keep up. I did end up getting a bachelors degree in a humanities field by the end of it.
Now I have much better time management skills, but my job constantly requires me to stay super later at night and I have to schedule all of my courses on Tuesdays and Thursdays because that was the only way I could fit work and school into my schedule. I have the time management skills now, but not the time. I swapped majors again, this time to a more analytical field than my first degree, but still a major that I believe will be easier for me to handle now.
Maybe one day, when I have some 9-5 job, I'll be able to do night school and get my mathematics degree. I really love math, and your videos have inspired me to do some self-study work on my own. I'm currently relearning the Discreet Mathematics course that almost made me fail years ago and I'm just trying to learn it one step at a time. Thank you for your videos.

I don't understand how some people don't learn math even if they are taught. It seems like no matter how much they try, they just can't learn. I wish them well, but too bad.
Some brains are better-equipped for doing math than others, which is why not everyone can become a mathematician 👍🏻

I recognised the song in passing and once i looked it up realised it was Mountain Goats! I have/had three of their albums on vinyl! Last one I bought was Goths but they have a looot of records.
Passion and curiosity are the main essence to achieving all goals. With it comes a lot of hard work that is alleviated by such passion and curiosity. Whether it be in learning guitar, sports, dancing, building, racing, cooking, drawing, learning mathematic and gaining muscles, haha, it always come down to passion and curiosity, man. Literally pursued electrical engineering out of curiosity and love for circuits, worked hard and despite hearing how hard it was, I’m doing great at it. I’m also building muscle, learning guitar and becoming curious about learning more math which was something that would unimaginable to myself of the past.

I totally understand what you are saying. I was so far behind in math, that I missed out on a lot of things. Finally I confounded that math demon and slowly but surely started working toward my goals. Consistently, and focus. And picturing yourself where you want to be helps.
You're absolutely right about it. In my experience, I studied both music, philosophy and did some logic courses (I told you about that in an email, anyways), while people looked upon me as: oh, you're so good at all. I was always plain direct, first, I love to learn, sure, but some times I dig really deep and give me the time to process something, and sometimes I'm wrong, really wrong I realize there's a better way o better approach. You see, I just observed not only the good insightful moments, but I'm really interested in moments of self doubt, o why we don't see something that's in front of our very eyes. Talent? Maybe, there's talent in the equation, but it takes years to mature and time to laugh about our old us and say: wow! I was wrong at that time. Keep your insights, very inspirational!
Was your love for learning something that came completely naturally or did you cultivate it over time, just from being in the process of learning? I'm kinda stuck here.

Learning basic logic and set theory and how to use those skills in proof writing is important. You don’t need to be a total master, but rather just know how to apply the basics really well. Often times you can prove something multiple ways, it’s just about finding the most efficient way to do so. I always start by looking at the hypothesis and seeing what I can immediately deduce from it that’s relevant to what I want to show. Then I go from there. Best thing I have found that works for me is to start from definitions and then bring in theorems or lemmas to strengthen my proof if needed. Sometimes they may help, sometimes not. Depends on whether what your showing is a result of a certain lemma or theorem or if they ask you to prove a lemma or theorem. Reason for this is because there are many cases of the converse of certain theorem being false.
If I am stuck the first thing I do is go back to the original question and put it into a truth table form, evaluate the truth table, and then that can give me an idea when and where counter examples to what I am trying to show exist. And in what ways. If it’s a P(x) -> Q(x) type of question it’s actually pretty straightforward. And even if it’s not in that form at first sight, sometimes it can be if you look closer at it. Especially if it’s something like ‘this conjunction being true implies this single statement being true’.
I always write a sort of rough draft version of a proof before writing down the whole thing. It also allows me to go back and see where I could possibly reorder certain statements, if I made an error somewhere, or if I can drop certain statements in places where they aren’t needed, or add in statements that I forgot to put in.
I have found that for me if I focus less on ‘which proof technique should I use’ and focus more on the underlying logical structure of what I am given in relation to what I need to show things seem to go smoother. Because often times you may have to use multiple proof techniques in a single problem in different ways. Focusing on the underlying logical structure at play and deducing what you need to deduce to prove what you want to prove is the important part. The proof techniques are just the tools you use to get there.
These are some things that have worked for me so far and I wanted to share them as a means of giving people tips if they are just beginning to learn proof writing. I am still learning myself but it’s definitely getting better the more experience I have gotten.
It just takes patience, practice and discipline.

I love your videos. I'm a physics graduate and whilst I graduated with a grade I was pleased with, I always felt I really come up short. Life is a struggle for me as I'm in a job I hate and I'm not interested in gaining jobs with my degree. I reason I did it was so that I could research and ask the big questions at the forefront of science and applied maths. Its been. year since I graduated and I've forgotten so much and I've barely touched the subject, however your videos are really helping get focused again - I'm going to try to find the time to do a masters degree through distance learning and your videos on why we learn maths are really inspiring me again.

When I pickedup guitar I figured out I was naturally inclined and was able to master instrument in few months to very advance levels along with piano and drums. Ended up becoming music teacher and performer which unfortunately was never my passion. My passion was always math until calculus completely ruined me and made me drop out of college lolz

That's what happens to me. I truly feel that I am not good at math, I don't have any talent at all, but even so, I try my best to improve every single day. I notice that I am making progress, and that motivates me to keep moving forward. I will continue doing so until the end of my life! The fact that I am surpassing myself every day and that I am able to learn something I find so challenging is what gives meaning to my life. I believe, in the end, that's what life is about: being resilient and overcoming difficulties!

I pursue mathematics precisely because it is what I would consider one of the most challenging yet deep and intricate subjects to learn. There are absolutely no short-cuts in mathematics for me so it is just doing lots of work and practise until I reach a point I can almost instinctively just do it. Currently doing lodes of work in Linear Algebra by combining doing the exercises in Shaum's Outlines of Linear Algebra, 4th Edition, probably might combine a Handbook of Linear Algebra or a textbook in Linear Algebra to help develop a more solid theoretical understanding of the subject, thoroughly enjoying all the work I'm putting in.

I got a math degree without working very hard, but once I got to grad school, I got destroyed by the huge jump in standards and workload. So getting by mostly by talent in undergrad ended up hurting me in the long run, because that whole time I hadn't cultivated a work ethic, learned time management, etc. All that is to say, talent by itself is not enough, and can even be a bad thing imo.
I started watching your videos a while ago. And I really have to thank you, seeing how happy you are to talk bout math, really has sparked something inside me again. I'm currently finishing high school, and now I truly believe that, the path I wanna take in life, is through math!!

I don't really enjoy math because I have no talent in it but I'm still pulling through all the classes because I have to in order to get my degree. Unless I become much better I will definitely avoid jobs where I would have to do a lot of math. The talented guys who have fun doing it can do the math while I focus on different things where I am talented.

The people who never try to pick up a guitar are the first ones to say, "Don't give up your day job." Ignore them. Don't be afraid of being bad. If you try you will get better.

how do you find out what you like though? You cannot try everything, some things need more funds than others, and sometimes there is a week where it is a real struggle to just get out of bed, where you keep sleeping for 10, for 12 ours and you are so slow with all the chores that you barely get to start anything before the day is over.
I feel like attending classes, learning new stuff, that's where you have the best chance to discover yourself, but if you have to work a part time job that takes too many hours from your day, you never have enough chances/energy left to pursue those things, explore them long enough to decide if they are the thing for you or not.
The best ways to stay a float somehow is to rub off on other peoples experiences/success. Can be a movie they discovered, but can also be a homework problem they solved that was hard for you. Rather than thinking to myself "I am stupid", I try to feel some of their "I am smart" feelings myself even if I think I could never have come up with the idea.
Just because you’re not great in math doesn’t mean you’re a failure in life. You can do other things. And be VERY GOOD at them!
Regarding the guitar...I play as well, however I have never devoted the same energy and structure to practicing guitar as I put into learning engineering and mathematics. I have friends that chose to put all of their energy into learning to play other people's music and now they can play Eddie Van Halen solos note for note, however they have NEVER written their own music. These same people practiced countless hours a day while I was spending countless hours learning math, physics, etc. Unfortunately, they never made it into a band and also do not have degrees.
I have to remind myself of this when I feel as if have no talent at playing guitar.
It's not possible to study math and music seriously at the same time. You can choose either one as a hobby, but the other one requires the majority of your attention. And there are people like this in math too-people who can just imitate but not create. That's quite normal, actually. Those who can create, whether it be good music or math, are geniuses, and they are a minority. I can play the guitar quite well, and as far as math is concerned, I am pretty average. I recently started my master's at 28 years old. Since I dedicated myself so much to music, it has somehow affected my proficiency in math. But I don't regret it. The truth is I love music too!
I just failed college algebra and I’m going to have to retake it, I have a 32. You mentioned people who aren’t good but like math, but I hate math and I’m not good. I have no talent for it and I hate every single second of math. I can’t even sit down and look at homework without getting extremely stressed out and in class maybe I understand a few things but then the second I get back I have zero clue at all and it kills me to even look at it. (Hoping you respond or give me some guide)
I've seen people going trough math by just learning the steps by hearth and getting the best grades. They don't even understand what they are doing. But those people get into trouble as soon as things require you to be to be practical with what you've learned. I don't have talent to learn things by hearth like boring definitions about number sets and things you never need to solve a problem. But I'm practical and seem to have a talent to understand what I'm doing. For those like me, the usual step by step guides, because that's how they teach you for example algebra in school don't work. Why don't they make match more practical? It would be more appealing to people like me.
I used to be like that and I used to learn just for an exam until I realized how damaging that was, we need to develop critical thinking and strategies for problem solving that are outside of the scope of a book or a course.

I noticed when I tutored math students that if they really struggled in a class it was always because they had somehow missed one or more key concepts in a previous class. If we had time to fill in the gap(s) they did great.
I feel like any success in my life has come from a place of deep curiosity. I actually don’t think I’m particularly talented at any one thing but when I apply my curiosity to a subject, I’m capable of accomplishing a lot. And it never feels laborious.

what i am, i am millitary now, but becouse it is reaquest for life, i am sportsman in 20 ages, but it is response of my plan on our life adventures, i am musician in my future 44 ages but it is respectful for my child years musical education, since 8 years old i am also criminal but it is not for a long acourding to my life plan... Though i have 1 grown up countries graid in sports(football, soccer), also i am optimistic in stude any type of musical instruments(without miss), yes in math i not necessory study becouse also know, i have enough knowledge to keep me alive in strange or danger situations, but it will not bring out my fear of dark or spirits... and it is no bad you know

I don’t feel that I can’t learn mathematics because I am less talented than others. But I always lose the desire to learn mathematics when I compare myself with other people who, from an early return, studied in Olympiads and went to the best courses. At one time I didn't have this opportunity and the thought arises that no matter how hard I try, I cannot reach their level;/
You don't need to reach their level. You only need to reach your level.
When I was in elementary school I failed an exam to enter into a private bilingual middle-high school. You could think that could have made my life different, "better" if you want, that I missed an opportunity. Funny thing is I did enter to the university that I wanted and I'm typing this message in a second language. I even had a colleague at work that did went to that high school. At the end the result was the same for both of us, my path was different, but we got the same job 🤷🏻♀️.

It's amazing how dumbfounded people look when I tell them I take part-time courses towards a degree or diploma rather than take full course loads. It's what I can handle and enjoy with much less stress and anxiety.
Also, realized for the first time, that yes talent is an interesting topic, and IQ, hard work, my pace, my levels all matter. Improvements are possible at a different pace and level for me.
Out of all of that and more the newer topic I learned is around responsibilities??!
I also understand that I gave limits to how many responsibilities I can handle all at once, at a certain intensity, and how long I can endure them over time.
I can figure out how I need to learn and work my own way...but I also am trying to understand how much responsibility I can handle...in a work place and at home.
I found my maximum level was teaching grade school. I was nearly dead each day I finished teaching. It took my whole being just to do all of that work. I'm glad I went to school for it ...but I could not sustain that responsibility without being totally exhausted. I made it to my max. I'm proud to have found that out but I was disappointed also....it means all the other people in my life that are much smarter, much more talented, and worked even harder went on to make more money, buy houses and cars, and have families. Comparing myself left me very sad for a while. Once people pass by you they never interact with you anymore. A class system basically.
So, I'm okay with my job as a Recreation Therapist. This is precisely the level I am at for my life. I'm very comfortable and happy. But, not rich like all of the others. Too bad our "classes" can mix much. People are cruel.
I still have a love of art and I'm very talented in that department. Lots of schooling too. And talented as a therapist. I love empathy and enjoy helping others.
I will have to work my whole life as all of my old friends will retire early. Oh well.

When it comes to guitar, the late, great Chet Atkins said, "You know, guitar is
not really a very easy instrument to learn." He should know. The truth is that if
someone has not put in the hard yards on guitar in terms of practice, not much
can be expected of their ability to play. You want to learn barre chords? Then
invest in a cheap, used Yamaha classical guitar. Make sure the set up is
good. It will be easy to learn on, and besides they are good for solo pieces
and types of music a steel string would be unsuitable for. Do what Doug

Learn to barre E Em A Am chord forms. Then you will be able to play all the major and
minor diatonic chords of all the chords in the open position. Start with Em. You should
be pretty good at it in 2 weeks. Use the middle and ring finger to finger the notes.
Then you will be able to play the relative minor of the A major key, a great one to play
out of. Lay down one more finger, the index, and you'll be able to barre the E major
chord form. Now you will be able to play all the major and minor diatonic chords
in C major. Once you learn to barre the A and Am forms, a lot of music will open
up for you, believe me, and you'll be picking up that guitar a lot more often
because you will be getting into the realm of making real music.

I could not for the life of me play a guitar but when I went to a bass it felt beautiful, been playing since 2019 now love every bit of it
