@@sterlingteall3462 Oh yeah, man! Don't give up! One test is just a drop in the bucket compared to the lifetime of learning we need to do. If you don't pick something up now, you'll just pick it up next time or the next time, etc. The race is long!
Thank you math professor. I had breakdown a few weeks ago and withdrew from college for this semester. My parents and all my relatives are now doubting me if I will even finish. And my dad even told me I can’t do sh*t and criticizes me for the smallest of mistakes and compares me to people who are 10-20 older than me. Whenever I go through something like this, have a setback or make a mistake or fail, they always do this sh*t and laugh at me and try to bring me down just because they couldn’t crack it in college. I just want to say thank you so much for the last few videos. You posted them just in time to help me cope. (Sorry for the rant)
It's so helpful to be able to hear advice and insight from someone that understands not just the math, but also the psychology of learning. Motivation is a huge part of any type of learning, especially for independent learners like myself. It's easy to become discouraged and these vids from TMS always seem to hit at the right time for me.
A journal is an important tool for keeping your head clear. Writing down all of the ideas swirling around in your head puts them in a tangible form allowing you to reflect on them in a slower, more rational manner.
I discovered this channel for math but as I go deepeer on your advice videos it gives me wisdom and makes me feel like you understand me and give me what i need to hear... thanks for that sir!
I'm writing my own math book about music theory. I'm very determined to get it published. I have looked on the internet for the concepts that I have developed but they were not there. And there was a time that I wanted to be a rockstar! Also I only got as far as algebra but became obsessed with mathematics, especially the ones for electronics. Thank you for the advice so I can keep going. Suzanne
There is no other person like you! I really appreciate your work here on youtube, and I really wish that I could have had you as my teacher back in my school days :D
I'm not even a mathematician, I use some basic math for my job (data engineering) but that's it. Even though you have teached me so many stuff this couple of years, and always reminding me to get better in anything I want to do. I really apreciate that.
Thanks! Setting big, outrageous goals is something that I have done and continue to do. And I do not share them with anyone. Then, I set S.M.A.R.T. goals. And I work on weekly and daily tasks. Then, I look at my habits, things I do automatically. These are habits that I have well-established (brushing my teeth, etc.). Finally, I am using my well-established habits as triggers for new habits. Cue-Respond-Reward. And this brings my outrageous goals into what I do daily and weekly. It feels great when I finish something tough. Keep posting great content! I really enjoy it.
Thanks for that video I've actually been needing it... I'm 17 and starting a business just that it's hard and nobody really can help me in what I'm doing and plus my friends and family not taking me seriously when I talk about it that's hard... Much of love and thanks again you're a great person !
Do it for yourself, prove them wrong and eventually they will take you seriously. I wish someone would have told me when I was 17, listening to other people’s opinions took me a few more years to start my business.
As psychologist Albert Bandura once said: "I believe I can, therefore I can" Thank you for your words of wisdom. I am glad that I have found you and your channel, now that I have started to conquer my own mountain in maths, hence, me taking up computer science. Keep up the good work, sir and may you inspire more people like us.
64 retired. Last math class was Intro to Diff Eq. 35 yrs. ago. I became curious with what math came next, so just recently I bought: Elementary Geometry for College Students by Koeberlein, Algebra and Trig. by Blitzer, and Precalculus by Blitzer. Started the first two 3 days ago and the Pre-Calc just arrived. I am finding myself drawn to them. I guess I'll find out where this takes me, and I'm not really sure why I'm willing to attempt this, but for now I'm forging ahead slowly. Thank you for your videos.
Thank you for being such a beacon of positivity and knowledge in this world of people with negative attitudes and no mathematical literacy. You really are a great role model :)
What I really want to do is advance the martial arts. Mathematics, to me, is a component of martial arts. All part of the mind, body, spirit connection. I believe 100% that is is through martial arts that humanity will heal itself and evolve. To be the most capable martial artist is to be the most capable human being in general. Nothing but good will come from guiding our civilization towards martial perfection in all forms. It will improve every aspect of society from top to bottom. This is my goal and dream for martial arts.
I am on my fifth season year of trying to grow enough variety food to feed one person for one year on a half acre garden. This simple task of growing any significant amount of food is harder than one can imagine. There are not many real farmers left in the world.
I want to become a banker which is an intermediate goal but the big picture is i want to master Quantative aptitude so that i can achieve my big picture goals an inspire others who are struggling with maths. And tell them if i can YOU CAN!
I've kinda lived my life on a 'zero-hours contract' with respect to goal-setting. I keep the attainment gap as narrow as possible, set a few teensy goals each day (or none), and generally do not think about the future. A lot of it has been damage-limitation. I've done o.k., I guess.
I get the feeling that Math Sorcerer has recently seen the new movie, “A Million Miles Away”. Both a nice inspirational video (by you) and an excellent movie!
Didnt expect this channel to give me this advice, it feels so honest, and it comes in great timing when cuz lately ive been in doubt of what should i do with my life and my future thanks man
Awesome video! I want to build aerospace equipment to advance the domain of aerospace. So I decided to learn electrical engineering as I’m very passionate about computers and hardware manipulation. One of the classes is D.E. and the professor is simply not the best, very conceptual and doesn’t explain things in simple terms. So I came to your channel hoping that you have a series on Differential equations and WOOOWWW are you just great. I am actually learning the topic with your lecture and beginning to see the lines in my text book! Thank you for helping me in my journey!!!
It is a big truth. Thanks 🙏🏻 But, as a european, I find something too much "american" in this advice. Let me explain it better... Having goals are a good thing until your mind remains open: you should never forget your point of view of yourself and reality is very confined and life can end or change roughly and suddenly. So... I think we have to pursuit lofty goals but, to be wise, at the same time, we should live life like a stunning game and not like a struggling race. (Sorry for my english)
Have you ever struggled through depression and how it affected your discipline and motivation? Could you talk about discipline and motivation. Perhaps about discipline and motivation when you lack those skills and lack dedication because of depression. I'm not sure if you feel comfortable talking about that but I figured might as well check if you are familiar with this issue. I'm 42 year old guy. I love your videos. Unfortunately, i never had discipline or motivation. Kind of why I failed in math. I don't wanna turn this into what could have I done different. It's about doing what I can now. And i just don't have that discipline or motivation. So far I've waddled through life through so many things. Right now I'm doing that with IT. And it's discouraging because I lack discipline and motivation. Perhaps at this point in my life I'm too late. I always wanted so many good things. I guess I didn't want them hard enough.
Thanks, great. Is it really irrelevant how unrealistic my goals are? I mean I'm over 50, I will never get an astronaut any more. My goal would be to understand the world and myself, but I think it is the most unrealistic I can think of (and I do have a Ph. D. In philosophy) ;-)
Lofty "unrealistic"👍 goals. Yes you must have unrealistic goals, otherwise you will not have the energy for hard work. And yes don't tell your goals anyone, otherwise you have to deal with naysayers.
Hello Math Sorcerer. I'm currently taking a look at your courses. I graduated university and of course took calc 1 but i didn't do too well primarily because i had no motivation to study. If you were to suggest courses that you've created do you suggest i start at College Algebra, Trigonometry and then CALC 1?
Yes i reemember. Math for me equal to scince, i somewhere i red before that mathemetic is Quien for scinse, realy if i usualy ask to math she say it is not a scinse but just a part of it. Esclusion formula for that is ,maths + phisics + ... = equal to scinse, but math not equal to phisics. it is broked me mind somehow but neverthles i am strive with it, and yes most joyfull subject i am recolect with the maths is fun and jokes.
for exemple for me there two points of vew, one Hispanic, another one is usual, i am say different russian, mine or principal. So i belive now i will indeliberet you some how, if we usualy have fun we don't know why, but i find real point of that, it is somthing happy( i am not native english speaker that is whyt pleas understand as possible) or enjoy or lough. And hispanic is very strong point that is always in our jokes, thogh not realy reachable
Tell that to Zhang, Hairer, Tao, Maynard, Viazovska, Scholze, why not Witten, Maldacena,...? or I don't know, those bearded guys playing with particle Maths, you know Quantum fields and what not, years ago? hahaha, man, for sure you are funny.
There is a book with the title something like "How bad you want it"? It's about psychology in sports. Yes, what is it what we really want? My problem is that there are too many things that I would like to do, that I want, and the time is limited of course. That there are tons of materials out there, books, courses, instruments, projects... everything very very affordable. And very very interesting. It considers mainly electronic design engineering. Every time I see something else that is tempting and interesting too. You mentioned once the Time Management tip from your mentor. I think I need something like that. And I need to structure the things that I want to do, make some choices and prioritize. The electronic engineering is just very broad. Very very broad. Math and Physics is one of those things that are the foundation. But I think it is in any way very positive that I have this drive now. The drive to learn. I am just turned 51, so still pretty young 🙂 🥸 Let's go. 💪💪💪
Came for the maths, stayed for wisdom 🔥
Same!
His videos motivate me to not quit working hard on math even after failing a test, which happened to me recently.
