Reading that Karla wrote it for her cat made it easier, but still the most heart wrenching song ever written. Sad but so beautiful you can't not listen to it over and over.
I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Karla and Nina Berger at the Grey Eagle Music Hall in Asheville, NC recently ...They both were very very down to earth. Just regular folks but with talent :-) And a great sense of humor. Nina did a solo playing the Ukraine National anthem which was truly awesome. And BTW, Karla has a killer smile that will disarm you instantly !!! I really enjoyed their show !!!
This is definitely a tearbraker--I just lost my cat, and this song is a great song to relieve your grief too. I have loved Karla for many years, she's an incredible artist!!!!! XOXOXOXOXOXO
This is an absolutely beautiful, poignant song! Sometimes I wish I had married a precious woman like Karla Bonoff because I could listen to her forever!!!! Love, BobbyK I'm also 11 years younger-LOL! You are a precious woman, Karla Bonoff!!! :+)
I found a kitten under a car at a mall in Denton, Texas in 1981. I was leaving the mall and two girls were trying to coax the kitten out from under the car, but she wouldn't come. I got under the car and she came right to me. I put her in my car and called my mother, who was the VP of the Humane Society. She said..."get a litter box and some kitten food. You need some responsibility. " I named her "Critter." She lived to be 25 years old. She was with me through 2 marriages, and drug addiction. Her kidneys failed toward the end, and I kept her on fluids around the clock at the vet, but she never recovered. I took her home and she couldn't stand. The next day I went to the vet and they put her to sleep in my arms. I have never cried like I did that day.
They say there are three kinds of deaths in this life: when you take your last breath, when you're laid to rest, and when you're forgotten. Your dear friend was obviously, spared the last and worst kind of death.
Thank you for posting this. One of my all time favorite song- breaks my heart. The bridge is so wonderful too- "Life's so fragile and love so pure. We can't hold on but we try. We watch how quickly it disappears and we never know why." That kills me.
I’m going to see her tomorrow night in Woodstock, NY, and I truly hope she sings this amazingly personal song. It’s my favorite and says exactly how I feel about friends I’ve lost better than I ever could. Sadly, she could dedicate it to all those innocent children who were savagely massacred 2 days ago in Texas.
On Linda Ronstandt’s Hasten Down The Wind album there are several of Karla’s songs on it. It’s one of my favorite albums. Linda recorded this one and it is amazing. I don’t know the year she recorded it but it’s on RUclips and so worth a listen
Going to see her tomorrow night in Beacon NY!! Such a legend. Helped me feel my way through a few tough years 20 years ago. Now she's coming to my town. Thank you Karla.
Wow I thought I was the only one to think that about this song. I lost my furr baby of 17 years May 2022 and I’m still so sad and miss him badly he was my little constant and best friend too and this song makes me remember him so 😢
This always reminded me of my sub Grandma. A black woman to a white boy. She was a real grandmother to me. The love could not have been stronger. This lady laid a plan in front of me that both of my parents, and grandfather agreed with. I hope others find as true a meaning from this song.
RIP Ruby D- our 14 yr old rescue lab from Smyrna, TN given to us by our daughter Leigh- SHe was my everything---- Let's hope for a better new year- thank you
@@oshesa1 ...the very worst. Although one never wants to be ungrateful for the gift of life, it is heartbreaking and exhausting to be the one left behind. This song is a prayer and a plea to appreciate the sources of love in our lives while they are among us, and to mercifully, let them go when their time here is done. Wishing you comfort and hope.
Never knew this song existed until I heard it on tick tock such a beautiful song Brings tears to my eyes thinking of my ex probably the best friend I ever had but never got the chance to tell her before she passed
It's always reminded me to a very special person. His name was Ayrton Senna who died at the age of 34 after a hard crash in San Marino en died later that evening in Bologna. Goodbye Ayrton...we will always reminded you...
Karla told us at one of her shows that she wrote this for her cat Tex who was accidentally let outside by a friend and was never seen again. My wife sobbed through the entire song after hearing this. We were in the first row with no tissues. It was not pretty.
Ellen Diane, Karla wrote this song for a pet, her cat Tex. I didn't know this until a few years ago when she told the story at her show. We were in the front row and my wife was crying her eyes out. Beautiful song.
thank you so much for your kindness- and information- I hope Karla is ok. I have 2 other wonderful dogs, but they will never be my Jake. Eventually I will get another GS,
An amazing song by Karla. Nobody has ever tried it before. The piano and voice blend to perfection. The very Best songs she has done are on the Piano. She makes them one. She is still skilled on Guitar. I find the piano is where she can solo. On Guitar Adding Nina puts it over the top.
"Goodbye My Friend" Oh we never know where life will take us I know it's just a ride on the wheel And we never know when death will shake us And we wonder how it will feel So goodbye my friend I know I'll never see you again But the time together through all the years Will take away these tears It's okay now Goodbye my friend I've seen a lot things that make me crazy And I guess I held on to you We could've run away and left well maybe But it wasn't time and we both knew So goodbye my friend I know I'll never see you again But the love you gave me through all the years Will take away these tears I'm okay now Goodbye my friend Life's so fragile and love's so pure We can't hold on but we try We watch how quickly it disappears And we never know why But I'm okay now Goodbye my friend You can go now Goodbye my friend
I know that song would be impossible to write unless the composer had experienced the lyrics personally ! To write a sad song you have to suffer sadness ! No one with a charmed life can write about despondency ,sorrow and pain .Mournfully sad and beautiful at the same time .
when Karla soft voices the phrase "we watch how quickly it disappears and we never know why", my 'manly' personna comes unraveled a bit - get a little misty to think my time with my best friend and pretty lady is getting short.

Kudos to Karla for writing such an amazing song. LInda Ronstadt is a better singer, and her version is superior, but this version is still beautiful. How did I not know this song existed until this week! Reminds me of "On a Bus to St. Cloud" by Gretchen Peters, sung by Trisha Yearwood. If one or both of those songs doesn't bring a tear to your eye, well, you are missing out!!!!!
No. Linda's version isn't "superior." Someone told you that, and you believe it. Linda was more attractive, and thus more marketable. That's your story.
I've always been a big fan of Karla...I think she is one of the most under rated artists in our generation. She has a beautiful soothing voice.
Almost as good as Linda Ronstadt.
I’m 70 years old, former Hippie, Listening to Karla is making me go back to the good old days. Thank you Karla!
I thought I was a tough guy...until I heard this tune and played it after one of my dogs passed. Still makes me cry....truly an angelic work
I lost my dog, my best friend, in June, and this song breaks my heart. So beautiful and so true. Thank you Karla for this song.
Reading that Karla wrote it for her cat made it easier, but still the most heart wrenching song ever written. Sad but so beautiful you can't not listen to it over and over.
Love this so much. A tribute to all those who've gone to the other side.
Mackey……love always.
I played this at my Dads funeral- it's a beautiful song. Special. Wonderful.
Love this wonderful person. When I’m having a bad day, I turn to Karla and my trials melt away.
Thank you Karla for the help in healing my heart.
what a beautiful song
I love this song!....and Karla is such a talented singer/songwriter!!!
This is the first time I've heard this song and there are tears my eyes already . Karla writes such beautiful songs.

My best friend died in 1985. I played this sone over and over and have listened to its beauty, sadness, and message ever since.

Beautifull song.....
"Goodbye My Friend"
Oh we never know where life will take us
I know it's just a ride on the wheel
And we never know when death will shake us
And we wonder how it will feel
So goodbye my friend
I know I'll never see you again
But the time together through all the years
Will take away these tears
It's okay now
Goodbye my friend
I've seen a lot things that make me crazy
And I guess I held on to you
We could've run away and left well maybe
But it wasn't time and we both knew
So goodbye my friend
I know I'll never see you again
But the love you gave me through all the years
Will take away these tears
I'm okay now
Goodbye my friend
Life's so fragile and love's so pure
We can't hold on but we try
We watch how quickly it disappears
And we never know why
But I'm okay now
Goodbye my friend
You can go now
Goodbye my friend
In memory of my beloved cat and best friend,Mistletoe🌈💔😿 I'll never forget about you😿💔💙
